The next Singing Showdown contest will be at the Coshocton County Fair on Saturday, Sept. 27. It will be at the Rotary Pavilion (right inside the main entrance at the fair), and will begin at 4 p.m. There will be trophies for first, second, and third place winners. In addition, there will be a $300 cash prize for first place winner. There are still opportunities to try out if you haven’t done so yet. These times and places are as follows: Friday Sept. 26 at the RD Promotions Site on the back midway. Try outs will be from 1 – 11 p.m. that day, and Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Rotary Pavilion before the contest from Noon to 2 p.m. Remember there is an entry fee of $5, and you need to have at least three songs that you want to try out with. It would be best if you would send an email with three song selections, and they can give you some additional tips about things you can do to make an impression with the judges. They can also answer any questions you might have. Or you can send them a private message on Facebook at Official Rick Williamson Page.

Art Hall popular attraction at fair
By Beth Scott
COSHOCTON – In addition to fair food, carnival rides, and livestock projects, the Coshocton County Fair offers fairgoers an opportunity to submit and view photography, paintings, floral arrangements, antiques, quilts, and even beautifully-decorated cakes and pies. The Art Hall is home to all of these unique displays and more and has been for many years. New to the building this year are LED lights which make the building much brighter. Bob Buxton, superintendent of the Art Hall, hopes to make enough money this year off of the cake and pie auction to install more lights for next year. This year, the Art Hall will also house a new demonstration. In addition to the usual woodcarving and quilting demonstrations, Ann Cornell from the Pomerene Center will be conducting a painting class where participants can paint a small square that will eventually be hung outside on the Art

Hall to make a barn quilt. In the past, the Art Hall had a unique feature that has been lost with the passage of time. Where the photos are housed, their used to be a theatre, simply called The Little Theatre where organizations would perform plays. “I remember when I was a sophomore in high school and our class went down and saw the play, Our Town,” said June Markley. “I’ll never forget that.” The theatre started in 1925 and although nobody knows when it closed, it was still going strong in 1951 for the sesquicentennial celebration. That year, two additions were also built on to the Art Hall, one of which was used as a dressing room for the theatre. Whether past or present, the Art Hall has always seen a steady stream of people who are interested in viewing the many exhibits. “It’s a constant stream of people,” said Buxton. “I would say that the Art Hall and the AG Hall are two of the most popular places at the fair. People go from one to the other. We have super participation. I’ve been pleased with the public support and the exhibits in there. We’ve about got that building filled up.” Judging will be taking place in the Art Hall prior to the opening of the fair and winning exhibits from the judging can be viewed opening day. The fair opens Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 a.m. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

The rough truck contest set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, is one of many events that is expected to draw a crowd to the grandstand at this year’s fair. BEACON FILE PHOTO “We are bringing it back after not having it for several years,” Adams said. “I’ve been to other fairs and talked to people who said they like watching this. People seem to enjoy it and have asked us to bring it back. It’s also something the fairboard can put on without a promoter.” Another event that seems to draw a crowd is the rough truck, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1. “This always packs the grandstand and has people standing on the fence,” Adams said. There is no musical act at the grandstand this year, but that may change next year. “There are I believe eight of us on the entertainment committee and we weighed what we spent on music in the past and crowd it drew and it just didn’t make sense to have music,” Adams said. “I strongly believe we will have a music night next year, but we wanted to try all motorsports this year.” Those who would like to see a different type of entertainment may want to check out the Rotary Pavilion. “Debbie Gaumer is in charge of the entertainment there and she’s got some pretty good acts this year,” Adams said. COSHOCTON – Rodney Adams believes the entertainment committee has put together a schedule that will keep the grandstand packed at this year’s fair, especially with the addition of a new event and the return of an old favorite. The new event is the BMX/FMX show scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28. “I think a lot of the younger crowd watches that kind of stuff on TV,” said Adams, chair of the entertainment committee and assistant for parking and security. “We haven’t been able to get an automobile thrill show because we are too late in the season, but hopefully people will be thrilled by the bikes and motorcycles.” He also is excited about the demolition derby at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29.

The fun at the Rotary Pavilion starts around 11 or noon during the fair and is geared toward children until 4 p.m. when the focus switches to adults. The lineup includes balloon animals, magic, country and 80s music, karaoke and much more. “I’m excited that there is music in that pavilion, I’m excited about the quarter auction and the balloon twisters,” Gaumer said. “Kids will get a free balloon hat right off the bat when they come in. We also will have a make and take craft with Chris Campbell from Clary Gardens and the Rube Band and people like Jeremy Timmons and others just popping in to play a tune.” The quarter auction will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, with paddles being $3 and bids $.25. Items up for auction will be from food and commercial vendors at the fairgrounds. “We are doing it as a money maker for next year’s pavilion entertainment,” Gaumer said. “When you don’t have a large budget or any it’s hard to plan shows for a week. I did the best I could and I just hope it makes people happy. Hopefully we can have a big name (perform) next year.” People can enjoy the grandstand and Rotary Pavilion entertainment with their $8 admission to the fair. “It’s the best value around,” Adams said. “I invite everyone to come out to the fair and enjoy themselves.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

If you want to eat at the Coshocton County Fair and help a good cause, try one of the high school music boosters’ food stands. Pictured is Coshocton’s stand, which is under the grandstand. Ridgewood and River View high schools food stands are located off the main midway. BEACON FILE PHOTO COSHOCTON – If you want to grab a meal at the Coshocton County Fair and help a good cause, try one of the high school music boosters’ food stands. Jacob Panteloukas, a senior at Ridgewood High School, has worked at his school’s food stand for four years. “It gives you a lot of opportunity to interact with fairgoers,” he said. “We sign up to work four hour shifts and taker orders, do drinks in the back and clean tables. The adults do the cooking.” Panteloukas likes working during the fair. “You can sign up with your friends and have a good time,” he said. “We’re usually not terribly busy other than lunch and dinner.” The students also can learn lessons from the experience. “I enjoy waiting on people,” said Evan Youker, who also is a senior at Ridgewood. “I’m generally quiet so this gets me to open up and talk to people.” Money raised from the food stand is a big help to the schools. “It allows us to buy new instruments, get our piano tuned, pay for instructors who come during the summer and get our show and drill written because we have it written privately for us,” Panteloukas said. “We don’t buy a generic one.” Both Panteloukas and Youker agreed that the most popular item at Ridgewood’s food stand is the General Burger. “It’s a double cheeseburger with the works,” Panteloukas said. “We also have all the standard eat stand foods for ‘fair’ prices.” A popular item at River View’s food stand is the Bear Nachos. “They are the only thing I get,” said Hannah Shaw, a senior at River View. “They have meat and cheese on them and are better than regular nachos.” She also thinks people come to their stand because they get good customer service. “We have a positive attitude and work well together and I think the public sees that,” Shaw said. Kaleb Klusty, who also is a senior, looks forward to working with everyone at River View’s food stand. “It’s fun and exciting to see the new faces of the junior high kids that we don’t see during the year,” he said. Senior Cornelius Lewis also enjoys the experience. SEE ‘FOOD STAND’ ON PAGE 30

Food Stand CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29 “I like getting to smell all the food,” he said. “The smells of the fair make it exciting, but I’ve also gotten to learn how to work with people I don’t know.” Lewis’ favorite menu item is the Double Bear Burger and Seth Kittner’s is the pie. Kittner, who is a senior, appreciates the support of the community. “It shows that they respect us for what we do,” he said. Ridgewood and River View high schools food stands are located off the main midway at the fairgrounds and Coshocton High School’s is under the grandstand. Coshocton students weren’t available for comments, but their menu from last year listed a variety of items, also at reasonable prices. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM
