from those associated with the This-N-That and Hamilton Valley Hustlers 4-H clubs. “If the area around you and your exhibit looks good you are going to want to take care of it,” Sheila said. “Plus these kids spent hours and hours pulling old staples and nails out of here. They put a lot of work into it.” Scott believes the updated barn will help promote the kids who bring beef projects to the fair. “It’s going to boost the morale of these kids because other club members are going to walk through here, see how nice it is, see the decorations and think it looks great,” he said. “Plus the kids get to say, ‘I helped do this.’” Michaela Greten was happy to help with the project. “The last couple of years it’s been in need of an update,” she said. “I’ve been here three times and taken a lot of years of staples out of the walls.” Greten and her brother Ryan show beef cattle with the This-N-That 4-H Club. “I hope people think it’s amazing because we put a lot of work into this,” Ryan said. June Hunter, an advisor with This-NThat, is very appreciative of the Graves pulling everyone together to work on the barn. “It wouldn’t have happened without them,” Hunter said. COSHOCTON – After 25 years of being a 4-H advisor and years of showing her own animals Sheila Graves thought it was time to give the cattle barn at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds an update. With the help of a $900 grant from the 4-H Endowment Fund and donations and lots of volunteer hours from those involved in showing cattle at the fair, the barn was power washed and re-stained and painted. “We started talking about doing this in July, but the last two to four years we knew we had to do something because the barn was starting to look cruddy,” Sheila said. “It’s needed a facelift for a long, long time.” New latticework and backdrops were put up by the volunteers and Rick Ryan Lumber donated tie boards for the cattle that the senior fairboard placed. “The Nate Moore Family and Justin Lapp Family did the bulk of the staining and placing boards, but about 50-60 people helped altogether,” Graves said. “It was a group effort.” She and her husband Scott work with Country Kids 4-H Club and Dave and Sheri Ferrell are their co-advisors, but they also received help

COSHOCTON - One ongoing project at the fairgrounds is updates to the junior fair swine barn. “We’ve been trying to get new pens and get rid of the older smaller ones and get more new ones like what are in the overhang by the wash rack,” said Rod Lindsey, who is on the hog committee. “They are metal ones that are a little bigger and easier on the hogs.” Lindsey said the committee started working on this project about a year ago and probably has raised around $6,000. New pens can be sponsored for $250 or you can join the contributor board for the following donations: Bronze - $500; silver - $1,000; gold - $2,500; platinum - $5,000. All funds will help with keeping the barn renovated as needs arise. Checks can be made out to the Coshocton County Agricultural Society and sent to: c/o Hog Committee, 707 Kenilworth Ave., Coshocton, OH 43812.

By Beth Scott other items. They also feature numerous produce, wheat and grains, canned goods, and a variety of items either grown or made by members of the granges. Each year, a group of individuals in each grange are in charge of each category when creating the displays. Each year, granges have a theme originated by the state grange which can range from conservation, forestry, firefighting, and others. “We do it to keep the fair going,” said Martha Young of the Walhonding Valley Grange. “The displays bring the crowds in. A lot of people come through the agriculture building to look at the grange displays.” The Walhonding Valley Grange started in 1910 and began showcasing at the fair in 1969. It currently has 54 members. Each grange has space allotted to them in the agricultural building and each year, the space is filled with beautiful items which don’t disappoint. Granges are required to have at least 12 quarts of canned goods, 10 corn sheaves, 12 varieties of produce, and eight jelly jars. “It’s been a thing granges in the counties have been doing over the years,” said Martin Daugherty of Keene Grange. “We compete with other granges to see who has the best display.” The Keene Grange has been a staple of the community for the past 70 to 80 years and has been exhibiting at the fair for approximately 50 years. They currently have 40 members. “It’s a fraternal organization,” said Paul Schonauer of Keene Grange. “It is fellowship and the meetings are to inform people of what’s going on whether it’s government, local problems, or community functions. And we do like to eat. We have snacks after each meeting and a covered dish dinner every month. We especially like to celebrate the holidays, Christmas, Easter, whatever holiday is coming up. If it’s someone’s birthday, we’ll sing Happy Birthday. It’s like a big family.”

Local bakers showcase their best creations at the fair

Welcome to the Coshocton County

By Beth Scott COSHOCTON – Every year, the Rotary Pavilion is packed with activities and entertainment during the Coshocton County Fair. But none is as sweet (and tasty) as the pie and cake auction and the baked goods auction. This is where bakers who have been named best of show auction off their CHRISTINE confectionary creations to a packed crowd of SYCKS people hoping to be the highest bidder. County Auditor One such baker is Sharry Chapman who won best of show last year for her coconut cake, tea Paid for by Christine Sycks, cake, nut fudge, berry pie, and canning. She has Coshocton County Auditor, been exhibiting at the fair for approximately 40 218 2nd Street, Warsaw, OH 43844 years. “I have never missed a fair,” she said. “I started exhibiting right out of high school and I haven’t missed a year. It’s a good time. I meet a lot of nice people at the fair and the girls I bake EXCAVATING INC. with became really good friends. Even though • Dozer & Backhoe Work • Truck/Dump we’re competing, we share recipes, but we like to Trucks • Hydraulic Crane compete against each other.” RESIDENTIAL • COMMERCIAL • INDUSTRIAL Chapman can’t remember a time when she • Sewers • Land Clearing wasn’t baking. • Basements • Sand • Water Lines • Gravel BEST OF SHOW Sharry Chapman, who had the overall best “I grew up on a farm, so baking was a part • Grading • Limestone of my life,” she said. “I was helping my mother 50 Years of Business: 1965-2015 of show coconut cake at last year’s fair, is pictured with her FREE ESTIMATES! brother Terry Thomas, who bought the cake. Continued from page 20 think of beautifully-decorated cakes with the perfect taste. But baker Bonnie Nelson received an award at last year’s fair for her ugly cake. Nelson’s cake was decorated with worms and maggots, all edible of course, and it won first place in the ugly cake division. “I was in the art hall one day and a little kid came through and said, ‘Ew, look at that. It’s got worms’,” she said, laughing. For the last 10 years, Nelson has entered a cake every year. She began baking when her children were little. “When my little girl was two or three years old, she wanted one of those stand up Barbie cakes,” said Nelson. “I bought one at a local bakery, and the kids wouldn’t eat it. That’s when I started baking.” Nelson has been baking for the last 40 years, and still makes birthday cakes for her grandchildren. “To me, it’s relaxing,” she said. “And just to see the little kids’ eyes when I bake them a cake, it’s amazing.” She is planning to enter another cake in this year’s fair. The baked goods auction is Friday, Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion. The pie and cake auction is Monday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

at the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival. This year, Chapman is planning on baking a chocolate cake and is also branching out into floral displays. She enjoys discovering new recipes and collects recipe books. The recipe for her best of show coconut cake was found in an old recipe book. “My grandmother, my mother, and my aunt taught me so many things and I’ll always be grateful for that,” she said. Last year was the first year that Lynda Hartsock entered pies in the county fair. She was pleasantly surprised when she won first place for her cherry and peach pies. “My husband said, you’re a good cook, but your pies look terrible,” Hartsock said. “When I won first place for my cherry and peach pies, I turned to him and said, eat your words.” Not only did Hartsock take first place in the cherry and peach pie class, but she also won best of show for her raisin-filled cookies. The recipe for her awardwinning cookies came from her mother. She has been exhibiting at the fair for 20 years. “I just enjoy it and enjoy the competition,” she said. “My daughter is doing it now and we’re competing against each other.” This year, Hartsock has three pages full of baked goods she plans to enter at the fair. “I like the looks on people’s faces when they taste it,” she said. “Whether they like it or not, I like to watch their reaction.” When you think of cakes winning awards, you

NTEE!

COSHOCTON – Have you ever wanted to take part in the junior fair auction, but weren’t sure where to start? Well the first step is to know the difference between a buy bid and keeper. “The buy bid price is the market price for the animal,” said Rod Lindsey, auction committee president. “For example hogs are now sold by the head so it’s the market price times the weight.” If the market price is $.50 a pound and you have a 200 pound hog, the buy bid for it is $100. That amount will then be subtracted from what you bid for the animal and at the end of the auction it will be sent on to be processed. Those who decide to make their bid a keeper will have to pay the full amount and have the animal processed at someplace like Olde Village Meats or Lacy’s Meats. “If it’s a keeper than you get the meat,” Lindsey said. “They go back to the barn and we have a load out crew that at the end of the auction helps get them where you want them to go. Buy bids go on the trailer right away. If you choose to keep the animal that is fine, but you don’t have to keep anything you bid on.” Everything at the junior fair auction is sold by the head, except feeder calves and steers, which go by the pound. COSHOCTON COUNTY FAIR PROGRAM

“This is a great way for businesses in our community to advertise and support youth in the community,” Lindsey said. “Kids invest countless hours in their projects and a lot of money is tied up in some of them. This is a way to reward them for their effort and work all year long.” One of the many community members who routinely participate in the auction is Kelly Miller from Farm Credit Services of America. “4-H is a passion of mine,” she said. “I was in 4-H, my father, brother, daughter, niece and nephew and many family and friends have been involved. I want my grandchildren to be involved. 4-H is a way of life for our family. You meet new people, learn responsibility, and gain leadership skills. The 4-H Motto is something to live by - to make the best better. The livestock sale is the highlight of the fair for youth with livestock projects. Without buyers, the sale would not be a success. I strongly support the sale through my company, personally and also promoting other companies to buy and/or bid.” Several years ago Miller became concerned about businesses not attending the auction so she and Suzanne Shrimplin went door to door and sent out letters with an invitation to attend the sale. “The biggest response was I don’t go to the sale or I don’t have the time to attend the sale,” Miller said. “That is when I thought....what can I do to help those buyers? We have a list of buyers that give the amount to spend, the item to purchase and then after the sale

Continued from page 22 since 1905 collect the funds. Suzanne and I split up the auction sites and purchase for others. It has gained many buyers over the years.” Her advice to any new business or individual considering participating in the auction is to talk to Gerber & Sons, Inc. those involved in 4-H and FFA. Manufacturers of Bob White Quality Feeds “Ask what 4-H and/or FFA has done for them,” Quality and Service: Our Most Important Products Miller said. “Talk to any 4-H or FFA alumni and ask what benefit 4-H had on their lives. Again, remember Gerber’s Feed Sack - Coshocton, Ohio (740) 622-8888 to make the best better.” Lindsey is looking forward to seeing dedicated Gerber & Sons Mill and Offices - Baltic, Ohio 1-800-468-4710 bidders like Miller and having another successful Farmerstown Elevator - (330) 897-4453 auction. www.gerberandsons.com “The businesses in this community have been outstanding,” Lindsey said. “Last year’s auction far exceeded our expectations with the businesses’ support ALE SAVE MONEY! of the kids in 4-H and FFA and we (the committee) S look forward to seeing the businesses come out again.” Big SALES SALE The Junior Fair Auction Sale of Champions starts are waiting at 5:30 p.m. in Hunter Arena and following the sale of for YOU at... champions and a short break in the auction, the auction e h continues in both Hunter Arena and the Junior Fair T Arena, depending on the species of animal to be sold. Even though granges have been doing this for many years, granges have been declining in membership over the years and the interest in being a member of a local grange just isn’t there anymore. “We don’t know how long we will be able to display at the fair,” said Richard Border of Tiverton Grange. “But we’re trying to keep it going.” Tiverton Grange started in 1901 and began displaying at the fair in the 1960s. They currently have 18 members. However, despite the fact that grange membership is declining, Border said that the Coshocton County Fair still has the best grange displays in the state. “I’ve attended several fairs in Ohio, but I’ve never seen displays like they have in Coshocton,” he said. Border commented that at one time, there were at least 18 granges in Coshocton County. “The granges are a great place to get together and enjoy each other’s fellowship,” he said. COSHOCTON – Fairgoers will again be able to test their knowledge of antiques in the art hall at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. For at least the last five years Bob Buxton has organized a guess the antiques contest, an idea he borrowed from the Ross County Fair. There are 49 categories that people can enter their antiques and relics

in the fair, but entries in the 48th one, Stump the Judge, are used for this contest. “We average about 10 entries and we’ve never had a year yet where the judge knew everything in the case,” said Buxton, who is superintendent of the home arts department of the fair. “We pick the top three by the ones the judge doesn’t know what they are or the judge thinks are the most unique or rare.” The entries must be no bigger than 12 inches and people do not have to know what they are to submit them in the fair. “During the fair we will have papers there (by the display) for people to write down their guesses for what they think they are,” Buxton said. The winner will be announced at the end of fair week and he or she will receive a pass to next year’s fair. “It’s something neat to do,” Buxton said. “People will be standing there talking and ask you if you know what they are, but you can’t tell them.” In addition to the antique contest, he is excited for people to see the improvements that were made to the art hall. “The quilt guild donated paint and we painted the quilt room this year and used proceeds from the pie and cake auction to put in new LED lights,” Buxton said. “It’s brighter and whiter and all ready for the quilts.” The quilt ladies and woodcarvers will once again be in the art hall demonstrating their crafts to the public and the building will display a new piece of art. “Anne Cornell with the Pomerene Center for the Arts was there last year and we had over 100 kids in a two day period help paint a quilt square,” Buxton said. “We appreciate Brad Sarchet and the boys at the Career Center putting a frame on it for us so we can hang it on the art hall for people to see.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Ride company celebrating 50 years

RIDES Bates Amusement is celebrating its 50th anniversary and the Coshocton County Fair has been one of its stops for at least 30 years. Bates Amusement Inc. operates about 40 rides for all ages and fun houses. BEACON FILE PHOTO COSHOCTON – Bates Amusement’s story began with pony rides and 50 years later the company is now one of the largest suppliers of amusement rides for fairs and festivals in Ohio, including the Coshocton County Fair. “I’ve traveled with the company since I was a child, maybe 6-yearsold and I’m in my 50s now,” said Kim Bates – Bozich, corporate secretary

for Bates Amusement Inc. “It’s really something to see all of the changes that have occurred in the growth and development of the company. We are the second generation and even have a third generation helping.” The Bates Family first got involved in providing entertainment at local events in their hometown of Wintersville when Geary and Eric Bates helped the Gambill Family with pony rings in the 1950s. After a portion of the Gambill farm was sold the family bought a mechanical ride and formed Gambill Amusement Co. In 1965, the Bates bought their first ride, the Rock-O-Plane and then in 1975 the company Gambill and Bates Brothers Amusement Co. was formed. Eventually the named was changed to Bates Brothers Amusement Co. and according to http://batesamusement.com, “in 1993 the company was restructured and divided into two companies, Bates Amusement Inc. (Geary Bates) and Bates Brothers Amusement Co. (Eric Bates). While both companies are completely separate, they come together once per year, in September for the Canfield Fair over Labor Day weekend.” “Between all of us we cover more county fairs and festival than any other company in Ohio from April to October when we finish our season up with the last county fair in Fairfield County,” said Bates – Bozich. “The key to our success has been commitment, dedication and a lot of hard work and versification. There are so many different fields (of jobs) here. I handle accounting and paperwork and we have mechanics to maintain equipment. We are fortunate in our family to have a lot of good people and key people that are able to do different facets of everything here.” Bates Amusement operates about 40 rides for all ages and fun houses. “We rotate the rides around and this year will be bringing a new piece, the Frog Hopper, to kiddie land at the Coshocton County Fair,” said Bates – Bozich. “It’s been real popular everywhere we’ve gone with it.” The total number of items they bring to the Coshocton County Fair between rides, fun houses and everything is usually in the high teens. “Ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds are must haves and then you try to have something for everyone,” said Bates – Bozich. “Some people like to go upside down and some just want something mild.” To celebrate their 50th anniversary and thank those who have supported them over the years, Bates gave 50 admission tickets to each individual fair for the fairboards to use as they pleased and are sponsoring a Disney Word vacation giveaway. “We are drawing for the vacation the first week of November,” said Bates – Bozich. “You just have to go online (http://batesamusement.com/ disney/) to enter. The winner will be able to go to their local AAA to customize their own family vacation for $5,000.” Bates has been coming to the Coshocton County Fair for well over 30 years now and the fair’s general admission cost of $8 includes the opportunity to experience what Bates brings out to the fairgrounds. “There is a certain drudgery that goes with any job, but when you see kids smiling and having fun, how can you not be happy?” said Bates – Bozich. By Beth Scott During this time, the band played about 12 to 15 events each year and mainly played street fairs and homecomings. Now, with approximately 30 venues each year, the band has played for the Longaberger Bee, the Ohio State Fair, Gov. COSHOCTON COUNTY FAIR PROGRAM

WALHONDING – The Walhonding Rube Band has entertained thousands of residents of Coshocton County and the surrounding areas for almost 100 years and has become a staple at many community functions, including the Coshocton County Fair. With 86 members, 30 of which are active, the band performs at about 30 different venues each year and is one of the longest-continuous bands in Ohio. The Walhonding Band formed in 1916 when Tommy Thompson, a barber from Zanesville, came to the Walhonding area and set up shop. Although he was a good barber, Thompson’s real passion was music and several music instruments lined the walls of his barber shop. In his spare time, Thompson gave musical lessons to local boys, two of which were James D. Allen and Dean Fry, who then became an integral part of the Walhonding Band. They instilled the love of the band in their children, Karen Locke and Tommy Fry, who still play in the band. Another member, Glenn Allen, is a descendant of a charter member, Lewis Allen. Thompson charged one or two pennies per lesson, and after a time, the boys he had taught began playing at venues around the Walhonding community, thus beginning the Walhonding Band. There were many local bands during that time in communities throughout the area. One such band was the Willy Green band in Millersburg and when it eventually died out, many members came to join the Walhonding Band. The Walhonding Rube Band is the only community band to have survived from that time period. When Thompson and his wife died only 12 hours apart from each other in 1958, band members were saddened to learn there would be no service for the couple and they were to be buried in a pauper’s grave in Columbus. Only hours later, members of the band arrived at the burial grounds and gave Thompson a burial service. They also raised money to purchase a memorial for him. By that time, the band had changed its name from the Walhonding Band to the Walhonding Rube Band. The name change was decided because the group used to perform clown-like antics and used to dress and act funny. “We do have fun,” said Cindy Kaiser, who has been in the band for 20 years. “We have more fun than the audience does sometimes.” In the 1950s, the band initiated its first president, Max Hefflefinger. It was also during this time that John Hutson, music teacher at Union School, helped keep the band alive as he recruited some of his students at the school to play in the Walhonding Rube Band. It was also in the 1950s that the band started playing at the Coshocton County Fair. The board wanted someone to entertain before the livestock auction and they also used to play in between the races during the fair.

weddings, and retirement parties, just to name a few. They used to lead the Canal Days parade in the 1970s, and some members even played at the Cleveland Air Races following the First World War. But the band’s busiest weekend is Memorial Day weekend where they used to play at five different events. This year, the band played at three Memorial Day events. “We take Memorial Day very seriously because it’s something that’s close to our hearts,” said Locke. “That, and the Relay for Life event. Those events really mean a lot to us.” Another event that is near and dear to the member’s hearts is the GAR Bean Dinner in New Castle. The Bean Queen started in 1983 with the first queen being Judy Martin. The first king was Tom Leech in 1996 and the current king is Gary Bantum. The first honorary king and queen was in 1987 and was Lewis Allen, charter member of the Walhonding Rube

Band, and his wife, Eunice. During the 2010 Bean Dinner, the Walhonding Rube Band recognized their “Band Groupies” with a sash and special ceremony. The “groupies” are mostly wives of the members who carry instruments and chairs, set up music at the venue, make sure each member has his or her water, and always claps the loudest in any audience. In the late 1940s, the band made a major change even before changing its name. They began to allow girls and women to be members of the band. “They were tickled to have us,” said Imogene Haines, current president of the band and member for 65 years. “Most of us were relatives of the men who already played.” Now, the Walhonding Rube Band is a group of musicians ranging in age from 16 to late 80s or early 90s. They used to just perform marches, but now do a variety of music including marches, waltzes, jazz, and some music from the 40s and 50s. “We love the marches, the ones that have a beat,” said Locke. “I love looking out in the audience and seeing people out there dancing to the upbeat songs.” Some former members have played well into their 90s before retiring. Members don’t have to audition. Just show up and play. “Play what you can and stop when you can’t,” said Kaiser. “Some of them say they haven’t played in 20 years, but that’s okay. This is a great way to practice.” The band has also won a variety of awards, but that’s not why members enjoy performing in the band. “We enjoy the company of everybody and we enjoy playing,” said Fry. Each member of the group also plays a wide-variety of instruments so that they can play an instrument on the spot if needed. “What holds us together is the music and the love of music,” said Locke. “One person we would like to mention is Jack Cullison. We really miss Jack. He loved music and he learned a lot of different instruments and he would just switch off to another instrument when we needed him to.” The band has an annual banquet at the end of each year where they take the money made from each event and divide it up among the members to help pay for gas. The band has always had members from three counties, Coshocton, Holmes, and Knox, and as many as nine counties. To learn more about the Walhonding Rube Band, find them on Facebook.
