COSHOCTON – The average age for the survival of a community choir is three years. The Coshocton Community Choir has far surpassed that number as they are about to end their 44th season. “When I started it, I had no idea I would still TO BY BETH SCOTT be leading it or that it would still be around,” some from out of the county. said Charles Snyder, director of the Community Ricky Harvey of Choir. Cambridge began singing with The choir started in autumn of 1971 and the Coshocton Community has grown over the years into a 200-voice choir Children’s Choir when he was with members from all over the county and even in sixth grade. “Mr. Snyder has been one of the biggest influences on me both musically and in being a good person,” said Harvey. “He demonstrates that every day. The choir is an awesome group, and it’s special to have in a small community like Corner of 8th & Main Coshocton. It’s a challenge and it pushes me musically.” 731 Main Street Soprano section leader, Jen Sper, has been Coshocton, Ohio 43812 with the choir for nine years and makes the drive each week from Reynoldsburg to sing with the Church Office: (740) 622-2208 choir. www.cccoshocton.org “Having lived far away from here, being in See us on Facebook the choir wasn’t possible,” said Sper. “When I moved back into this area, I was ready to make that commitment. It’s all about the quality of the Join us for Sunday Morning ensemble. The quality of music is very different Worship at 10:30 a.m. and the repertoire we perform is higher than most community choirs.” Kingdom Tweens & Teens, Kingdom Kids and Kingdom Tots available during worship The cover of Faith Renewed was taken at Foursquare Solid Rock Church located at 46160 CR 55, Coshocton. 0024_032515

The Cochocton County

Coshocton

The idea for a community choir in Coshocton began with Frank Brownstead, former choir director at the Presbyterian Church. He formed a group of singers that performed a large piece of work such as Handel’s “Messiah” or “Elijah” each year. “It was not a choir that continued,” said Snyder. “They would do one major piece of music and that was it. I thought, how wonderful would it be to have a group perform and do all kinds of literature.” The original plan was to perform a major piece such as “Messiah” and that’s what the choir did for a number of years. Later, they began performing acapella, without instruments,

Grace UMC serves spiritual needs of community for 175 years father’s funeral was held there. Moody is just one of 125 50-year members of the church who will be honored on Sunday, April 12, when Grace UMC celebrates its 175th anniversary. “They’ve been the backbone of our church,” said Judy Elliott, who is helping organize the anniversary celebration. “They are the leaders who have been involved in a lot of different programs and financially supported the church.” The official celebration starts at 11 a.m. and will include a visit from Bishop John Hopkins, the playing of a commemorative piece of music written by Tom Havelka, a meal in the fellowship hall and the unveiling of a time capsule that was buried in 1976. New items also will be placed in the capsule to be opened at the 200th anniversary in 2040. The church’s history dates back to 1840 when Isaac N. Baird, with the help of Mrs. David Spangler, organized a congregation of 12 people that met in the jury box of the county courthouse. The present church was completed in 1881, and dedicated free of debt on April 24 of that year. One change to the building that Moody remembers is the addition of the educational wing in the 1950s. He still has fond memories of classes that were held at the church. “We had an adult Sunday school class that lasted for a number of years,” Moody said. “There We Take Pride In... were maybe 25 to 30 people in it. We’d go ▷ Skilled Nursing ▷ Home IV Therapy on picnics and take ▷ Home Therapy ▷ Personal Care trips. It also was nice ▷ Home Care Aide ▷ Non-Medical Care because most of us had ▷ Homemaker ▷ Companionship kids who were all in the same age range.” At one time there also were 50 to 60 kids in a high school Sunday school class. Young families with children may not be the norm at the church anymore, but it still has several strong programs. “We have a United Methodist Women’s organization 420 Downtowner Plaza, that does mission work Coshocton in the community 740-623-2949 and worldwide and a 1260 Monroe Ave N.W., senior adult ministry H e a l t h C a r e® New Philadelphia program that meets 1-877-759-2106 monthly,” Elliott said. “We probably have www.interimhealthcare.com 90 to 100 people (in 0049_032515

The church, however, has seen some negative changes due to the economy. “At one time we had around 1,400 members and now there are probably about 800,” Elliott said. “We don’t have the industries we used to have and people with children aren’t staying here.” Many groups still use the church though. Banquets are held there and a Boy Scout troop has met there for years. At one time the church’s gymnasium also was in demand. “Years ago it was the biggest in town,” Moody said. The people, though, are what have made the church last for more than 100 years. “We have dedicated members,” Moody said. Nita Near, who is a 50-year member of the church along with her husband Fred, agrees with Moody. “Twenty years ago we retired and had to decide whether or not to stay in Coshocton,” Nita said. “We aren’t natives of here so we thought about going back to our hometown. This church is what kept us here. We just couldn’t leave this beautiful community of believers.” Another key to the church’s long history is strong leadership from pastors over the years. In fact, part of the anniversary celebration includes inviting many of them back to speak at the church on select Sundays.

COSHOCTON – Four area church choirs will come together on Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at Roscoe United Methodist Church to perform the 11th annual Musik Fest under the direction of Les Widder, choral director at Roscoe. “It’s very colorful because each choir wears their own robes from their home church, and it’s just a lot of fun,” said Widder. “The comradery and just working together makes it all worth it. The first objective is to worship Christ and everything else just falls into place. It’s just fun to sing together and it’s uplifting.”

literature and people were more responsive. “When we started moving to the accapella tradition, audiences were more interested and people who had been in their own college groups, this was a way for them to continue singing worthy literature,” said Snyder. Now, when the choir performs for their Christmas or spring concerts, there’s hardly an empty seat in the auditorium. “I think the Coshocton community has come to realize that it’s a blessing to have a choir like this in the community,” said Harvey. “They leave blessed and fulfilled.” “We don’t do stuff that typical community choirs will do,” said Snyder. “People who come to the Christmas concert for the first time are, I hear the expression, blown away.” Austin Simcox, a first-year member who travels from Pickerington, has worked with Snyder in the All-Ohio State Youth Choir and the Cardinal Chorale. “Mr. Snyder has a very unique style of conducting the choir,” said Simcox. “Knowing him and what he’s looking for is one reason why I’ve continued with Mr. Snyder. I like the music he makes. It’s a very unique style of music and very uplifting.” Although the repertoire is more challenging than most community choirs, new members with no musical background shouldn’t feel overwhelmed. “We have people in here with no musical experience,” said Joni McClain, who became a member last October. “This is a very welcoming group, and there’s a wide variety of ages. If you want to join, don’t hesitate. If you have a question, don’t feel bad about asking.” Members who have sung in high school or college choirs may find the Community Choir as

COSHOCTON – The Three Rivers United Methodist Church District welcomed a new superintendent on July 1 of last year. Rev. Dr. Bradley Call was called to the position by Bishop John Hopkins after serving as pastor of Thoburn United Methodist Church in St. Clairsville since 2005. Dr. Call has been an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church Ministry since 1977 and was first appointed to West Park United Methodist Church in Wintersville in a part-time position for six months. He was then pastor in Midvale from March 1978 through June 1987 and then served at Cambridge Ninth Street Church from 1987 through 1995. He pastored Roscoe United Methodist Church from July 1995 through October 1997. Call then began serving on the General Board of Global Ministries in the office of Finance and Field Service. “I got to travel all over the place and visit a variety of churches,” Call said. “It was interesting to get an overview of the types of churches in different geographical settings.” After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the board downsized and Call started his own partnership, Church Stewardship Consultants, which had the same mission as the General Board of Global Ministries. During this time, he also served as a steward in the United Methodist Church Foundation of New England. He served there until 2005 when he was appointed to Thoburn where he was pastor for nine years before being

Each year, the superintendent meets with each United Methodist pastor in the district and the pastor parish relations committee to discuss the church’s needs, concerns, ministries, finances, and any other business. The pastor will raise any concerns he or she has at this time about the church in general. This is usually a three-month process. Journey’s End Ministries’ doors are open to Coshocton

BY JOSIE SELLERS

NEWCOMERSTOWN – About 15 years ago a group of men decided to help the needy in their community by offering a free meal one time a month in a church basement. Their efforts grew into what is now called Journey’s End Ministries, which helps thousands of people with food and clothing. Journey’s End is located at 205 S. River Street in Newcomerstown, but serves people far beyond its city limits. The organization used to only aid people within a 10 mile radius, but in April of 2014, the boundaries were opened. Four hundred families from Coshocton County are being helped and even people from Dresden and Millersburg are making the trip to Journey’s End. “We will take them from anywhere,” said Janet Gore, director. “We are seeing mostly senior citizens from Coshocton County and most of them only come if they have too. Anyone can browse through the clothing part of the organization and make selections free of charge. “They can take as much as they want,” Gore said. “Donated items that we can’t put out (because of their condition) are sent to a church in Uhrichsville that gets rags made out of them.” Families or individuals who meet federal income guidelines also can shop for food one time a week. Food pantry clients must check in upon arrival with their photo identification, utility bill and the birthdays of everyone in their household. They are then given a shopping cart and are allowed to work their way through the pantry selecting items based on their family’s size. “Signing up is computerized and only takes about five minutes and then they are off,” Gore said.

Journey’s End is a nondenominational organization that is operated by 10 different churches that have pulled together, but at least 25 donate into it. “God is the key to this organization’s success,” Gore said. “It’s awesome what he’s done for us.” They aren’t hurting for volunteers, their clothing racks are never down and there always seems to be enough food to go around. Through the end of April people can help Journey’s End by donating to its Stuff the Pantry fundraiser. “With every dollar someone donates I can buy 30 pounds of food,” Gore said. “Even if you give me your change I will stretch it.” Journey’s End operates on a $100,000

version of a requiem mass. The Musik Fest began as an idea during the Encounter evangelism event at the fairgrounds. Widder was in charge of gathering the choirs together for that event, and when it was discontinued, Widder wanted to continue the tradition of choirs coming together to sing praises and worship. “One of the challenges is the logistics,” said Widder. “Who is sitting where and making sure everyone has room to stand and knowing what’s going on. But that’s really it. We all get along together and we all have fun.” Refreshments will be served after the event by Roscoe United Methodist Church. A freewill offering will be taken during the event to help with music expenses. Part of the money collected will also go toward the Hope Clinic in Coshocton. The event will be video recorded. New to the festival this year is the newlyarranged selection, “Bless This House”, arranged by Darius McBride, student conductor at Malone University. McBride was commissioned to arrange this piece for the 50th anniversary celebration of Roscoe United Methodist Church. “This young man is going to go places,” said Widder. “He has already arranged eight or nine songs, composed two songs, and is working on a mass this summer. He’s also got a grin that doesn’t stop. He’s a neat young man.” “Music has always been a part of my life,” said McBride. “When I was in high school, I had a choral director and you could just see the passion for music in her eyes. You could tell she loved what she was doing.” McBride is planning to become a high school choir director when he graduates Malone and eventually wants to direct music at the college level. This summer, he is composing his own

COSHOCTON – Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s nearly 120 year old stained glass windows recently received a facelift. “We started seriously thinking about this two years ago and thanks to contributions from the parish and grants we are able to get it all taken care of,” said Deacon Doug Mould. Six windows on either sides of the pews that depict saints, two large ones above the side doors and across from them by the statue of Mary, the

window with St. Cecilia above the choir loft and two cherub angels by the alter were removed and restored by Associated Crafts. The company also fixed broken pieces in other windows, put a new protective coating on the outside of all the stain glass windows and scraped, painted and recaulked the outside frames. “They are gorgeous,” Mould said. “The

Call said that despite an overall declining church congregation, the Three Rivers District seems to be seeing a slight increase. “In a world that wants to be spiritual but not religious, finding a way to keep the church relevant is a challenge,” said Call. “I still believe Christ died for our sins and God’s grace is greater than anything that would separate us from God. God’s grace is big enough for all of God’s people to live together. If we all gather and not demonize one another and listen to what we have to say, I think we’d find we have so much more in common than what separates us.” Call graduated from Malone College in Canton with a BA in Christian Ministries.
