Give your lawn and garden some TLC this fall

COSHOCTON – Just because its fall doesn’t mean it’s time to stop giving your lawn and garden some tender loving care. Now is the perfect time to plant your hardy bulbs like crocuses, daffodils and tulips. “You need to look at the size and diameter of your bulbs and plant them three times that in the ground,” said Tammi Rogers, program assistant, ag and natural resources, master gardener volunteer coordinator. “If your bulb is one inch in diameter

TULIPS Now is the perfect time to plant your hardy bulbs like crocuses, daffodils and tulips so you will have beautiful blooms in the spring. BEACON FILE PHOTO then you need to plant it three inches deep in the ground. If it’s three inches in diameter, plant it nine inches deep. It’s a good rule of thumb, but you don’t have to be exact.” Some people like to add bulb fertilizer, but Rogers said that is not necessary. “The best time to fertilize these kinds of plants is actually right after they are done blooming,” she said. “It will seep down into the ground and the roots and help them the following spring.” While the best time to divide your bulb plants is in the summer, Rogers noted that it is ok to move them if you happened to be digging and come across some. “Nine times out of 10 they will do just fine if you plant them and move on,” she said. Another good project to tackle in the fall is planting trees and shrubs. “The earlier you can do this, the better,” Rogers

BY JOSIE SELLERS said. “Bulbs are hardy and forgiving. I’ve planted some up until the ground has frozen and been fine, but you can’t do that with trees and shrubs. They need to establish a good root system before winter. If not, the roots can heave out of the soil and our cold winters will freeze them out completely.” Fall is a good time to plant trees and shrubs because the soil temperature is warm and we typically have more rain at this time of year. “If we aren’t getting rain then you need to water them not daily, but weekly and make sure it’s a deep soaking,” Rogers said. “They need a gallon of water per one inch diameter of the trunk per week. Even established trees and shrubs could use watering before winter. Make sure they are well watered going into winter and give them an extra drink before it freezes.” You also can add some extra color to your flower beds this fall. “If your annuals are starting to look bad try incorporating some mums, pansies, primroses or asters,” Rogers said. “Cleaning up the edges around your landscaping, sidewalks and curbs also can make an entire area look neater.” When your annuals start to look brown you can sprinkle their seeds around before you pull the plants in hopes of them growing again next year. “Marigolds and zinnias are great for this,” SEE ‘GARDEN’ ON PAGE 3

Take a close look at your windows this fall

BY JOSIE SELLERS

COSHOCTON – With colder weather around the corner now is a good time to take a close look at your windows. “You want to look at the operation of the windows,” said Steve Davis, manager at Lee’s Glass Service. “Does the weather stripping fit snuggly? Are the locks in place and operational? Is there moisture built up between the windows?” Regular care and maintenance can help prevent some problems. “Don’t let debris build up in the corners,” Davis said. “With the vinyl windows that tilt in, make sure you clean the whole sash and not just the glass.” You also may want to consider getting new windows if your home still has the old single pane ones or if there is a lot of air leaking around them.

“What we typically find ourselves doing is going in and measuring an entire house and then breaking out the price for people per window and they will get one, two or three at a time,” Davis said. “We have one customer who pays for half of one when he orders it then pays for the rest of it when we put it in and orders another one later.” According to Davis, windows should be a once in a lifetime investment. “If they are properly installed and cared for you shouldn’t have to do them again,” he said. New windows also can improve natural lighting in your home. “They are better than the old aluminum storm windows,” Davis said. “They were supposed to keep weather off of the old wood windows, but they also trapped bugs and took away natural light.” Today’s windows can be tinted, help with drapery fading or even deal with outside sounds. “We can deaden road noise, but the price does go up with the different options,” Davis said. “The most important thing for most customers is that the windows tilt in so they are easier to clean.” Another nice feature of replacement windows is that they are all custom made so you don’t have to worry about if your home has odd shaped windows. “There is no such thing as a standard window,” he said. “They are built to fit the opening.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Rogers said. “Collect their seeds and spread them around and then look for their seedlings next year.” Another way to get a jump on your spring gardening is to pull weeds now. “Any weeds left that are perennials will be back next year if you don’t get them,” Rogers said. “An annual’s sole purpose is to produce seeds so if you let them go you will have more of an issue next spring. Keep up on your weeds and over a couple of years you will notice you hardly have any and you will prevent more work for yourself.” You also can’t stop cutting your grass just because summer has faded to fall. “You have to cut your grass until it stops growing and in the fall it’s going to grow faster because of the cooler weather and the fact that we typically get more rain,” Rogers said. “Now until the middle of September also is a good time to plant grass seed if you have some bare spots. It’s easier to establish now than in the spring.” This time of year it is ok to cut your grass a little shorter than in the summer. Rogers suggests setting your mower for two to two and half inches in the fall versus the two and a half to three inches that is recommended for summer. “A lot of people also apply lawn fertilizer in the fall,” she said. “This will help get your lawn up and going faster in the spring.” Rogers welcomes people’s questions and said they can contact her by phone at 740-6222265, e-mail rogers.376@osu.edu or stop by her office in the county services building at 724 S. Seventh St., Room 110. The OSU Extension Office has fact sheets on several topics including hardy bulbs, lawn care and trees and shrubs. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON – Want to give your home a fresh update this fall? There are several ways you can brighten up rooms even without paint. Daphne McCabe-France from Knob Hill Design suggests you first start with the lighting in a room. “Either can lights (which I always start with) then lamps etc.,” she said. “Light really brings focus to dark corners or objects of interest that might otherwise go unnoticed.” Those interesting features of a room could be wallpaper or wall appliqués, but pillows or throws

also can make a difference in a room. “You can mask an old sofa beautifully with pillows and throws either with full contrast color or using fabrics that start with the sofa color and gently take it to a more current pitch with an interesting pattern,” McCabe-France said. However, she believes one of the greatest impacts you can make in a room is with the windows. “Just a beautiful blind treatment, soft like romans or pleated shades or hard like wood blinds can bring a wonderful mood to any room,” McCabe-France said. “Drapery and or valances really bring about change within each room. Whether you are ready to make a commitment to custom treatments (designs crafted for you alone) or ready mades (mass produced but very inexpensive) these two options really put your personality into a room. I carry both at the design studio because of the volume of children’s rooms and spare bedrooms that we do. These rooms tend to change quickly and so a smaller investment is generally called for, that being the readymade panels and pillows.” Another fun way to change a room is to decorate for the season. “Halloween is one of my favorite decorating seasons,” McCabe-France said. “You can dress up the outside of your home really organically with pumpkins and mums and the inside with ceramics and floral arrangements. My new favorite, especially at my home, is my collection of pumpkins called Funkins. They are made of PVC and look so real. I have them both outside and in. I also now mix them with un-decorated Christmas trees because it extends the seasons and blends amazing colors together. I just add more Christmas decor to it the closer the season gets. We do this at the store too and get so many comments from shoppers and clients, it’s a real winner.” Other inexpensive ways to transform a room include adding metal or iron wall decor with candles or mirrors for a 3D impact or putting down a rug. “A rug alone can change everything about a room, from sound to just aesthetic visual pleasure,” McCabe-France said. It’s also fairly easy to give your kitchen or bathroom a new look. SEE ‘UPDTAE ROOMS’ ON PAGE 9

Replacing a roof: Shingles or Metal?

BY BETH SCOTT

The lifespan of a shingle roof varies depending on the quality of the shingles, the weather environment, and the quality of workmanship at installation. First you should decide whether to simply repair the damaged places on you roof or replace it completely. If there are various places that need repaired and your roof is more than two decades old, replacing the entire roof may be the cheaper option in the end. You know it’s time to replace your roof when shingles start to leak, crinkle, edges begin

If you have a metal roof on your house, in theory, it should last forever, but it will start to fade over time. “Some people would argue that metal roofing is not made for a house because it can’t breathe properly,” said Marion Miller, Building Material Salesman at Keim Lumber, located at 4465 SR 557 in Charm, Ohio. “A metal roof is definitely going to be okay if you have the right builder who ventilates well. COSHOCTON – Before the cold weather hits, you may want to consider the condition of your roof. Does it need repaired or replaced before the first big snow or frost? How do you know what materials to replace your roof with? “A metal roof is more expensive than a shingle roof,” said Don Mills of Coshocton Pallet and Door. “But a metal roof lasts longer. Shingles are meant to last 20 to 25 years, but with the weather conditions, we’re lucky to get 15 years out of a shingle roof. Metal roofs are also more environmentally-friendly.”

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 “Adding a backsplash to your kitchen or bath brings home everything else about that room,” McCabe-France said. “Go outside your comfort zone here. You really need to mix stone and glass or metal with your tile so the light catches your eye and brings about an emotion. It’s sort of a visceral reaction when you have glass next to rough stone or slate, go for it. These days you can rent a machine for very little and do it yourself. I so deeply believe in this change. I usually roll up my sleeves and do the tiling myself for clients. Tile makes a huge impact.” Another paint free way to add punch to a room is art. “First, I advise to take time to figure out what you really like and can live with and then to make fine art one of the biggest long term investments in your home,” McCabe-France said. “I have some fine art from 30 years ago in my home and I am still passionate about these pieces. They were probably chosen again from a visceral reaction to the media and color or simply for the concept they portrayed. No matter what, if you are true to yourself with the art you invest in it will all blend beautifully in your home. If you are just learning about yourself and your space art will also tell that story - making your home your own personal statement.” No matter where you start with your updates, McCabe-France encourages people to, “never be a slave to what they think their home should be.” “Follow your heart or call a designer to help you sort out what it is that really makes your home the place you want to go every spare minute you have, to celebrate, rest, eat and entertain,” she said. McCabe-France has been an interior designer for 26 years. She has a degree in art and studied a year at I.D.I for design and does interior design from Medina to Columbus. Her business, Knob Hill Design is located at 398 Hill St.

Miller and Mills agree that both metal and shingle roofs stand up pretty well to the extreme Ohio winters. “Both kinds of materials are made for that (snow),” said Miller. “If the shingles and metal roof are in good condition, both should stand up to the snow.” You should have your roof inspected every three to five years, depending on how old the roof is. Older roofs should be inspected every two years. BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

However, you still want to check for mold, especially if there are trees around your home that touches the roof. Tree fungus can spread onto the shingles and stick to its rough surface. With a metal roof, tree fungus doesn’t cause a problem because of its smooth surface. “A metal roof is easier and quicker to install,” said Donnie Jacobs, contract salesman at

Both Jim and CJ said cast iron and galvanized plumbing will rust and it’s not a question of if you will have to replace them, but when. Jim also highly suggests really considering how big of an emergency an issue is before you try to get a hold of a plumber after hours. “Sometimes things just aren’t that big of an emergency,” he said. “If you have three bathrooms and one isn’t working that’s really not an emergency and neither is a drippy faucet.
