A Meat and Grill Package, two Adirondack chairs, and a gift certificate to Auer Ace Hardware are being raffled off by Habitat for Humanity. The drawing will be at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 14 at the 2011 Home & Lifestyle Show.

The Meat and Grill Package includes $300 worth of meat from the Village Market in West Lafayette and an outdoor grill. The meat can be picked up at the Village Market in smaller bundles if the winner wishes.

The Adirondack chairs were constructed by the adult students of the Mid East Career and Technology Center’s Building Construction and Remodeling program and donated to Habitat For Humanity. The gift certificate from Auer Ace Hardware is for $100.

Raffle tickets are available for $1 each; ten for $5; or 25 for $10. They may be purchased from any Habitat For Humanity board member or at the 2011 Home & Lifestyle Show.

How many groceries can you collect in 90 seconds? How fast can you go?

Habitat For Humanity of Coshocton County and Bakers’ IGA are teaming together and conducting a raffle to give one lucky person a chance to “sweep” Bakers’ IGA for as many groceries as they can gather in 90 seconds!

Raffle tickets are $5 each or three for $10 and will be available at the Home & Lifestyle Show, from a Habitat board member, or at Bakers’ IGA. Certain restrictions will apply. No legal beverages, cigarettes, or pharmaceuticals may be included. No more than two of any item will be permitted.

The second place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate from Bakers’ IGA and the third place winner will receive a $25 gift certificate from Bakers’.

The drawing for the lucky winner will be April 4 during the WTNS remote broadcast at Bakers’ IGA. The “sweep” will be Monday, April 11 at Bakers’ IGA.

Volunteers help make Home Show successful

The Home & Lifestyle Show requires many hours from committed and active volunteers. The Home & Lifestyle Show committee put in many hours to get the show organized, but many more volunteers and hours will be used before the weekend is over.

Coshocton County Career Center students are stepping forward to contribute to the community. The National Honor Society and Student Council members will help with set-up at the Home & Lifestyle Show.

Exhibitors arriving on Friday evening will be met by students who will take the exhibitor to the proper display location. They will assist with getting the vendors’ wares to their display area.

On Sunday evening after the show, other community members will help tear down, assist vendors, and the general clean up of the Career Center.

Coshocton REACT will direct traffic in the parking lot on Saturday.

Some people will be arriving for the show, while others may be there to take advantage of the bulk shredding in the faculty parking lot.

Recent partner families will be helping with the greeting of people as they arrive at the show. They will assist with registration for door prizes and answer questions regarding Habitat For Humanity and the Home & Lifestyle Show.

All of the demonstrators and presenters will also be donating their time for the seminars. Their topics, from gardening to working with gourds to carving wood to Red, White, and Bloom Coshocton, should have an interest to a broad audience.

Habitat For Humanity is fortunate to have the support of so many in the community. The Home & Lifestyle Show is a great way for all ages to come together and help a great cause. Thanks to all that have given and will be giving of their time to help make the 2011 Home & Lifestyle Show a great and memorable success.

Catering available at Home Show For those not wanting to cook and wanting to see the Home & Lifestyle Show, Buehler’s Catering will be providing sandwiches and sides while Rich’s Barbeque will offer their popular pork barbeque at the 2011 Home & Lifestyle Show.

Italian sausage sandwiches, macaroni salad, potato salad, cookies, and beverages provided by Buehler’s Catering will be available for purchase in the Mill, which will be located in the Coshocton County Career Center.

Rich’s trailer will be parked in the front parking lot and his regular menu will be available.

In addition to serving food, the Buehler’s display will include information about services that they provide for any type of event from small parties to weddings and corporate events. From baked goods, to floral displays, to legal beverage selection, and to fresh produce, meat, and seafood, Buehler’s Catering can be your one-stop event planning headquarters.

Shredding your personal papers is one good way to make certain the information contained in them does not fall into unwanted hands. Whether it’s old tax records, canceled checks, credit card statements, or just plain old junk mail, you need to dispose of it in a safe, secure, and eco-friendly manner.

Habitat For Humanity has again made arrangements for Shred-It of Gahanna to conduct a Shred-It Day on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m.

– 2 p.m. in the faculty parking lot at the Coshocton County Career Center.

The event is in conjunction with the 2011 Home and Lifestyle Show.

For the first time, Habitat For Humanity is offering a “pick up” service.

If you have packaged items that you would like shredded and cannot make the scheduled time, contact the Habitat For Humanity office by Wednesday, March 9. Leave your phone number and you will be contacted to arrange a pick up time for your paper.

Acceptable items for shredding include white paper, colored paper, envelopes, NCR paper, junk mail, computer print outs, and folders. Credit reports and applications, personal documents, business documents and records, employee records, client information, and financial records or tax documents will all be shredded for recycling. It is not necessary to remove staples or paper clips.

Items that cannot be accepted at this event include newspapers, paper towels, facial and/or bath tissue, plastics, tape, glass products, or food products.

There is no fee for the shredding service, but donations to help defray the cost and to benefit Habitat For Humanity are greatly appreciated. In addition, if you utilize the “pick up” service, an additional donation to defray those costs would be appreciated.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get rid of unwanted office and personal papers and send it to be recycled.

Saturday March 12 Phyllis Debnar - Growing, Drying, and Designing with Gourds Saturday 11 - 11:45 a.m.

Coshocton County native Phyllis Debnar developed an early interest in gardening by watching her grandfather, who grew fall produce. As a youth, she was active in 4-H and became involved with ornamental gourds. Fifteen years ago, Phyllis attended a green gourd show where her creative side came alive. A green gourd is the hard shell variety that takes a year to dry before it can be worked into a piece of art. Phyllis was hooked from that point on.

Phyllis plans to demonstrate what has kept her interest over the years and to promote the growing and showing of these gourds in the Coshocton County fair. She campaigned with the fair board to get forty categories created for showing and judging. Come see what can be done with these green neck gourds and maybe you will be the next one to have an entry at the fair.

Tammi Rogers - Kids Hour – From Dirt to the Dinner Table with Herbs Saturday 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Tammi Rogers is the Master Gardener Coordinator at the Coshocton County Extension Office. Her responsibilities include the promotion of youth programs countywide. At this year’s Home & Lifestyle Show, Tammi and several Master Gardeners will show kids how to grow herbs and vegetables from seed to maturity. The youth will go “hands-on” to plant seeds they may take home to watch grow.

Then, Tammi and Mike Cichon, the local culinary instructor at the Career Center, will teach the kids how to prepare their harvest for the dinner table. The students may be surprised that eating healthy is not so bad after all. Plan on bringing your child to the show to have a good time and learn about herb growth and preparation. All the materials will be furnished.

Coshocton County Woodcarvers - How to Become a Woodcarver Saturday 2 - 2:45 p.m.

The Coshocton County Woodcarvers meet every Monday evening to create and carve away in the basement of a building at the corner of Main and Kirk Streets in West Lafayette. When they first started, it was just a small group, but today, they number about fifteen with many ages represented.

At this year’s show, several of the members will explain the different types of carvings; e.g. relief carving (a flat carving), carving in the round (seen from all sides, 360 degrees) and Cottonwood bark carvings. They will also demonstrate the tools used to bring their masterpieces to life.

Also on display at the show will be the Woodcarvers tribute to the Coshocton County Bicentennial, something you don’t want to miss. Stop by to see their display and demonstration. Perhaps they will spark your interest to become the next woodcarver in the basement.

Sunday March 13 Connie Miller - Red, White, and Bloom – Coshocton County Sunday 1 - 1:45 p.m.

A very popular speaker at last year’s Home Show, Connie Miller of Roscoe Village Landscape returns to the 2011 Home & Lifestyle Show.

Speaking on behalf of Roscoe Village and Clary Gardens, Connie will be explaining “America in Bloom” and Coshocton’s entry, “Red, White, and Bloom”. Coshocton is celebrating its bicentennial year and the “Red, White, and Bloom” theme has been selected to showcase its beauty and charm.

As the county gears up to compete with other similarly-sized communities at the national level of “America in Bloom”, Coshocton will be evaluated in eight categories. Among them will be displays for municipalities and businesses as well as individual residences.

Connie will explain how the entire county can get involved in the competition. Clary Gardens, along with Roscoe Village, will be strong backers of this project. However, other sponsors from throughout the county will be needed. Stop by and learn how you can help to promote Coshocton County and to make a good first impression on those visiting or passing through the area.

Stephen Troendly - Container Gardening Sunday 3 - 3:45 p.m.

Stephen Troendly, Coshocton County Headstart Director for seven years, has been involved with the Headstart program for 36 years. But Stephen also has a passion for playing in the dirt and watching nature come to life through flowers. During this time of year, you will find Steve, his wife Julie, and their good friend Charles Downer, in the greenhouse getting ready for the summertime area Farmer’s Markets. Stephen and Julie are familiar faces at the Coshocton Farmer’s Market.

Though you may see many different flowering plants under his tent, coleus is a favorite for him. Coleus is grown for its brightly-colored variegated leaves. They provide color without bloom and have such a variety of textures and size. There are frilly ones, plain ones, some that need shade and others that don’t. They also can be found in many radiant colors.

Another option for container gardens that is increasing in popularity is cactus, also known as succulents. They are very good for anyone without the green thumb.

Steve will demonstrate how to brighten a landscape with flowers, in small or large spaces through container gardening. It will be worth your time to sit in and listen for helpful hints from this passionate gardener.

Deb Gaumer - Vegetable Garden Time Line Sunday 2 - 2:45 p.m.

In early spring each year, cars line up down CR 10 as customers are anxious to inspect the abundance of plants and garden supplies on display.

Shrubs, vines, trees, herbs, perennials, and annuals along with garden plants and vegetables are found in The Garden Patches’ greenhouses and display areas. Mulches and garden ornaments are also tucked in there somewhere. The knowledgeable staff is very helpful in trying to meet all of the customer needs.

This year, as food prices skyrocket, many consumers are considering growing their own vegetables. Deb Gaumer from the Garden Patch will present a vegetable timeline for this region. She will explain the best time to put seeds and garden plants in the ground in order to get an abundant return. There is no need to refer to the Farmer’s Almanac or go by the light of the moon to get good, hearty vegetables. Be there to find out how to have a garden from April to November.
