I recently heard a young man in his twenties lamenting about the quality of sleds being offered at a local store and how they were made of plastic, fiberglass or a thin aluminum. He then compared them to the wood and steel one he had as a child. It made me smile and remember my first sled. When I was growing up, Flexible Flyer was the sled every kid dreamed of. They were available in three sizes, plus toboggans, with the wide ash body and fire engine red steel frame. They were the Cadillac of sleds and their price reflected it. I received my first sled, a Western Flier, for Christmas when I was five. I enjoyed riding on the small banks around our house, but my dad came up with a great plan, or so he and I thought. My mom didn’t agree. There had been a deep snow the night before and there wasn’t any traffic, so why not ride down the road? My dad was six feet tall and it was a bit of a tight fit for him on that small sled, but we were soon whizzing past our driveway and having great fun. It was right at the bottom of the bank that we hit the rut in the road and the sled went out from underneath us! My dad was now the sled with me on top! Luckily, he was wearing a heavy leather jacket because it was a bumpy ride. My mom was watching from the kitchen window and saw the sled go into the spring as dad and I sailed by. We were retrieving our sled when she appeared and while dad and I had thought it was a great ride, mom did not agree. Everybody has a favorite sledding place and the hill by the high school is a favorite in Coshocton. I‘ve also heard many stories about Roscoe Village residents sledding down Hill Street. I imagine they took some wild rides. Brrr! Though we are grown up and grumble about the winter weather, I still think that inside there’s an inner child in us who on a snowy winter’s day would like to head for a nice big hill and go sledding.

COSHOCTON – When you think of exercising, you may think of a young couple jogging down a sidewalk or an aerobics class at a local gym. But physical fitness isn’t just for the younger generation. Older Americans are encouraged to continue their exercise routine well into their 60s, 70s, 80s, and in some cases, into their 90s. If you’re an older American and don’t feel comfortable exercising with a group of people thirty years or so your junior, Silver Sneakers is a great way to maintain your health and flexibility and exercise with people your age who have the same health needs as you. The Silver Sneakers program uses bands, weights, and therapy balls in their exercises and offer different moves both sitting and standing. Both Kids America and Colonial Sports-n-Courts have a Silver Sneakers program and it’s offered at various times throughout the week for your convenience and is available for those who are eligible for Medicare. It’s no secret that when you work out at least 30 minutes a day and eat right, you have a better quality of life. You tend to have a better social life and are healthier than those who don’t. People of all ages are also encouraged to work out in a group. Statistics show that when working out in a group, you tend to have a better success rate than when working out alone because

Alzheimer’s: The epidemic sweeping the nation COSHOCTON – When German physician Alois Alzheimer first discovered a brain disease in 1906, it was considered very rare. Today, more than five million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease and it’s steadily on the increase. It affects nearly 10 percent of those older than 65 and almost half of those over 80. The main reason this disease is increasing in older adults is because scientists are still not sure how to treat or prevent the disease from occurring. Researchers believe Alzheimer’s occurs when there is a malfunction and death of the nerve cells in the brain. However, they still don’t understand why this happens or how to combat the problem. Not a lot is known about Alzheimer’s or why it affects some and not others. If you have a family history of Alzheimer’s, you are more prone to the disease. However, just because you have a family history of Alzheimer’s does not guarantee that you will be affected by it. “Alzheimer’s is a bigger problem than most people realize because it’s not out there in the open,” said Ralph Myers who runs an Alzheimer’s support group locally with Cathy Hudson. “A lot of family members think it’s just age or the patient is in a nursing home and not in public.” “The family makes excuses in their own mind when seeing Mom and Dad slip up and not really wanting to admit it,” said Hudson.

Is it Alzheimer’s or just old age? So how can you tell if your loved one has Alzheimer’s disease compared to those who are forgetful due to the natural aging process? According to alz.org, the national Alzheimer’s website, there are 10 warning signs to look for. 1) Not Normal: The most common symptom associated with Alzheimer’s is memory loss. People with Alzheimer’s may forget recently-learned information or important dates, names, or events. They may also ask for the same information to be repeated numerous times or consistently rely on family members for information they should know. Normal: Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later. 2) Not Normal: Some people with Alzheimer’s may find it difficult to come up with and follow a plan. They may have trouble following simple directions or balancing a checkbook. Normal: Making occasional errors throughout the day. 3) Not Normal: Some people may find it difficult to complete a daily task. They may forget how to get to the drugstore, to a family member’s house, or even how to get home. Normal: Occasionally asking a family member for help when doing a daily task. 4) Not Normal: People with this disease often confuse dates, seasons, and the passage of time. If it’s not happening immediately, they may have trouble understanding it. They may also forget where they are or how they got there. Normal: Getting confused about the day of the week, but remembering later. 5) Not Normal: Some people may even experience vision problems and have trouble judging distance or reading. Normal: Eye problems due to cataracts 6) Not Normal: People with Alzheimer’s may have problems having or following a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue. Normal: Sometimes having trouble finding the right word 7) Not Normal: Placing objects in unusual places and not being able to remember where you placed them is also another sign of Alzheimer’s. In some cases, they may even accuse someone of stealing their things. Normal: Misplacing items from time-to-time. 8) Not Normal: People with Alzheimer’s may have problems making good decisions. They may lose their life savings to telemarketers and also may not keep up with cleanliness. Normal: Making an occasional bad choice. 9) Not Normal: It’s also common that some people may experience depression or avoid social outings. They may withdraw from friends, family members, and co-workers. Normal: Sometimes feeling tired of work and social obligations. 10) Not Normal: This disease may cause changes in personality. Some people may become easily irritable, confused, depressed, fearful, or anxious. They may become upset when out of their comfort zone. Normal: Developing a way of doing daily tasks and becoming somewhat upset when it changes. See ‘Alzheimer’s’ on page 5

I’m a caregiver. What resources are out there? If you are a caregiver of a loved one with Alzheimer’s, the first step you should take is to acquire as much information as possible about the disease to learn what is happening in your loved one’s mind and how the disease progresses. The Alzheimer’s Association website at alz.org is a great place to start and probably has answers to most if not all of your questions. A local resource is the Alzheimer’s Support Group which is at 4 p.m. the last Thursday of the month, except November and December, which is the third Thursday, at Health Services of Coshocton, located at 230 S. 4th St. in Coshocton. “We can’t do anything with Alzheimer’s itself, but we can help the caregivers,” said Myers. “We can’t make the problem go away, but we can help them deal with it.” Sometimes, the caregivers themselves can become angry with the situation and may become hostile toward the loved one who is afflicted because they have changed so drastically. The main thing to remember is that your loved one cannot help

Is it fatal? Alzheimer’s disease in itself is not fatal. However, it can lead to other causes which can be fatal to the individual. “Typically, people are not going to die from Alzheimer’s,” said Hudson. “But your body isn’t functioning the way it should, so you die from a related cause.” “Some people even forget how to swallow,” said Myers. “Alzheimer’s death is on the increase, so it’s really a lot more devastating than people realize. If it’s there, it only gets worse. It never gets better. How long you live after the diagnosis may depend on your physical fitness at the time.”
the changes happening in their mind and they are probably just as angry and frustrated as you are. “There’s sometimes anger associated with the caregivers because they don’t know what’s going on at first,” said Hudson. “This person they love is suddenly changing.” Another source of anger may come from having to make a decision to place your loved one in a nursing home. The caregiver may feel like they are abandoning their loved one when in reality, they may be making the best decision for their loved one and themselves. “It’s okay that you couldn’t do it at home,” said Hudson. “We try to help them make that decision on whether or not to put their loved one in a facility. There are different services in the community that can pull together and help your loved one and give you a break.” “The caregiver sometimes struggles more than the patient because the patient doesn’t really know what’s going on,” said Myers. People who suffer with Alzheimer’s disease are also welcome to attend the meetings. “I think it helps them to come to the meetings,” said Myers. “They are frightened. They’ve heard of this ugly disease and they think, how is this going to affect my life? The truth is, your life will never be the same, but you can learn to live with it.” BETH@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Can it be prevented and what are my treatment options? Since Alzheimer’s is a disease occurring in the mind, there are some things you can do now that may prevent you from contracting the disease. Like our bodies, our minds need to stay healthy through mental stimulation. Keep your mind active by playing games with friends or family, reading a book, socialize as much as possible with friends and family, and even watching television can stimulate the brain. However, this doesn’t guarantee you will not contract Alzheimer’s. Currently, there is no treatment for the disease, but a few drugs have been certified by the FDA to help temporarily improve symptoms of the disease. If you suspect that you or a loved one has Alzheimer’s the best thing to do is make an appointment with your doctor immediately to be diagnosed. “Early detection is very important because it allows family members and loved ones to prepare to make all those important decisions early before it gets worse and you’re not able to make those decisions,” said Hudson. If you are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, be sure to discuss legal matters such as wills and power of attorney while you are still able. “This is a big deal, not only emotionally, it’s a big deal financially,” said Myers. “Face it and try to deal with it, but don’t sweep it under the rug and pretend it doesn’t exist.”

In his new book, Harvard Medical School Guide to Tai Chi, Peter Wayne, Ph.D., shares exciting news about the benefits of Tai Chi. Dr. Wayne, a longtime Tai Chi teacher and Harvard Medical School researcher, developed a simplified Tai Chi program that he then used to test for a variety of health benefits. Tai Chi and its close relative Qigong (pronounced chee gung) were developed thousands of years ago in China and consist of slow, smooth body movements that achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. While Tai Chi is an excellent form of exercise for Baby Boomers and older people, it is beneficial for all ages and all exercise levels. Reporting on his own findings as well as the results of other studies, Dr. Wayne describes how conventional medical science now shows what Tai Chi masters have known for centuries: regular practice leads to more vigor and flexibility, better balance and mobility, and a sense of well-being. Cutting edge research now supports claims that Tai Chi also has a beneficial impact on the health of the heart, bones, nerves and muscles, immune system, and the mind. One of the interesting things that Dr. Wayne points out is that Tai Chi, even though it is a very gentle, slow moving form of exercise, helps improve aerobic capacity and overall fitness in both healthy people, as well as in those with cardiovascular disease.
