CO-CHAIR’S MESSAGE On behalf of the 35 plus committee members of the Coshocton County Relay For Life, we officially welcome you to the 15th Annual 2010 Coshocton Relay! As Co-Chairs for this special event, we are honored to represent Coshocton County and we hope to reach our goal of raising $135,000.00 for the fight against cancer. Emily Kobel and Kim Gress Last year’s event was a huge success and we are proud to say Coshocton exceeded the goal of raising $130,000.00! Coshocton County continues to be a “Club Relay” by being in the top 50 relays in Ohio (out of 250). Coshocton is a place where so many people have been affected by cancer and people continue to support the American Cancer Society’s fight to end this dreaded disease. Our theme this year is “Believe” and it focuses on how we all need to believe that a cure for cancer is in sight. As you walk around the fairgrounds this year, you will see how our survivors, caregivers, families and our community “believe” that cancer will be defeated! We are proud to say that we have 54 teams who support our event through all their fundraising efforts, hard work and dedication throughout the year. We can’t thank them enough for making Coshocton’s Relay the great success it continues to be year after year. Please join us on Friday, May 14th for the 15th Annual Relay For Life. Opening ceremonies begin at 6:00p.m. and the traditional Luminaria candle lighting ceremony will be held at 9:00 p.m. on Friday, May 14th. During the 24 hour event, we are excited to welcome several local bands, entertainers and our very own D.J. Dave Lear. Throughout the night and through the next day, we will be having karaoke, a Eucre Tournament, many creative theme laps, a Veggie Cart Derby, the famous Miss Relay contest and Purse Auction, the Cake, Quilt and Craft Auction, Jodi Seibert’s Dance Group and even a Three-Legged Race! Also, we will again honor our Armed Forces, elected officials and first responders at Noon on Saturday, May 15th. Our honorary chairs for this year will be recognized during the opening ceremony on Friday evening at 6:00p.m. Because cancer affects so many victims, families and friends, we encourage everyone, survivor or not, to please come out and support Coshocton County’s efforts to raise money to defeat the terrible ugly disease of cancer.

the Relay for life experience Cancer has touched everyone in some way or another in the community. To celebrate the survivors and remember the victims, Coshocton County will be having their 15th annual Relay for Life on Friday, May 14 Saturday, May 15. This 24-hour event begins at the Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. on Friday. Each year, the Relay for Life committee works long hours to make this event happen and to help raise money for the cure. There are 35 people on the committee, which help to plan the survivor banquet, write press releases for media, fundraising, sign up teams, and plan the event. “The committee is the glue that holds everything together,” said Kim Gress, co-chairperson of the event and cancer survivor, “and I have the best committee ever.” Although the committee has a lot of responsibilities, all members

are organized and committed to their work. This year’s goal is to raise $135,000, and the more than 50 teams have been hard at work with fundraising to reach that goal. Teams raise money throughout the year with various fundraisers including bake sales, car washes, selling candy bars, and the spaghetti dinner. The results of how much money raised will be announced during the event. “The whole process is unbelievable,” said Kim, “I’ve never been involved in anything where people are so committed.” Coshocton County is considered a Club Relay in Ohio. To be a Club Relay, each individual county in the state must raise at least $100,000. Coshocton County also has a phenomenal amount of committee members. Most counties only have four to ten people on their committee. Coshocton County has 35. Each Relay meeting in the county usually has up to 50 people in attendance. “I don’t think people in Coshocton County realize how special Coshocton County is,” said Kim. Relay for Life is about giving back to the community. Two local songwriters have written two original songs for this year’s Relay as well. “I like to give back to the community,” said Emily Kobel, cochairperson of the event, “It gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling because everyone is affected by cancer and the American Cancer Society has done so much. Who hasn’t been touched by cancer? Every year, they’re making advances, but it’s still here. It doesn’t know race, creed, or religion. It can take anyone.” “I’ve made friends who will last a lifetime because of the fun we’ve had through this whole Relay process,” said Kim. Emily also urges anyone who is not a part of Relay this year to come on down to the Fairgrounds anyway and see what it’s all about. She’s hoping that it might inspire you to get involved next year. Relay for Life will begin Friday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at the Fairgrounds and end Saturday, May 15 at 6 p.m.

Coshocton County Relay for Life Program
When Rose Shortt was diagnosed with cancer, her doctors gave her a year to live. Scared, and with a small child in her care, she decided not to give up hope and began to fight. Twenty-four years later, she is still going strong. Rose was first diagnosed with Hotchkins lymphoma in 1986. She recalls being absolutely devastated when she first found out. She had a young child and didn’t know where to turn. Luckily, her mother helped her through the rough times. Unfortunately, Rose can’t be a part of Relay for Life this year because of other commitments, but she says that the event is good for the research. For example, when Rose first learned of her cancer, she used experimental drugs for treatment. Now, these drugs are used every day to help fight cancer. If it hadn’t been for that research used to develop these experimental drugs, Rose might not have won her battle. She credits these drugs as helping to save her life. “That little voice is always in the back of your mind saying, ‘What if?’,” said Rose, “You just live every day as it comes.” Some of Rose’s family members, including her uncles, sisters, and cousin have been diagnosed with cancer. Some have lost their lives due to this disease. And Rose has suffered right along with them. “I don’t think my family and co-workers realize how much they help,” said Rose. Although Rose can’t be a part of Relay this year, she says it’s good for the research and for making more people aware of the disease. She also said it’s always nice to meet a cancer survivor like herself.

Competing for a cause With over 50 teams in this year’s Relay for Life program, there are a variety of reasons why people chose to join or create a team of their own. Whether they are cancer survivors or had family and friends lose their lives to cancer, they all come together for one weekend with one purpose: to find a cure for what is quickly becoming an epidemic. One team has only been around for a little over a month. Team Time Warner Cable in Coshocton decided to start a Relay team when their tech supervisor had a family member who had been diagnosed with cancer. So far, they have 18 people on their team consisting of staff and co-workers. After they received their kit in March, they started their work and began asking for donations. Patty Walters, Team Captain, says she feels like she’s missed out with a lot of fundraising opportunities because of being such a young team. However, if this year goes well, she plans on continuing their team next year. “It’s been a lot of hard work,” she said, “but it looks like it’s going to be fun. We’re like a family here at Time Warner Cable. We’ve been here a long time. We thought this was something we could do to come together and help raise money for a good cause.” Family Heartaches is another fairly new team in Relay. They’ve been around for a couple of years and have had a lot of family members pass away from cancer. Denise DeWitt is the team captain and also a survivor. Her team has 68 members, all family and friends. This team has had all different kinds of fundraisers throughout the year. Everything from sack lunches, a car wash, raffle, and yard sales to selling homemade key chains, jewelry and bookmarks. Their goal was $1500 and they have already exceeded that goal.

Denise said being team captain was a little more challenging than she originally thought. “It’s more than we thought it would be,” she said, “coming up with fundraiser ideas and figuring out a way to decorate our tent.” Denise also commented how time consuming the paperwork was. Miracles Around the Corner is also another family team in Relay. They have been involved with Relay for the past five years. Their team captain, Mary Carnes, has been involved with the program for a decade. In 2000, her brother was diagnosed with brain cancer. She originally started with another team and then branched off into her own team, which consists of 16 – 20 members. In the five years they have been a team, they have raised an impressive $41,444 for the American Cancer Society. Last year, they raised $10,000 and were 5th out of about 50 teams. With the addition of bake sales and candy bar sales, Team Miracle Around the Corner also raffled off a Wii last Christmas that they had received at last year’s Relay for raising $10,000. The Wii brought in $750 for the team. Since the Wii was free, all monies raised were able to go toward Relay. They also sold 1800 candy bars, which is a great feat considering they are a small team. Mary said that even though the economy is bad, her team still receives great support from the community. In a way, the teams are competing against each other, but it’s all for one purpose. “If you can come in town for Relay weekend, it’s really something to see first-hand,” said Mary. Relay for Life weekend will be Friday, May 14 starting at 6 p.m. and ends Saturday, May 15 at 6 p.m. The event will be at the fairgrounds.

later had a lump removed from his breast by a dermatologist. “I was always confident that I would beat it,” Jim said, “I had taken a pro-active approach the last two times. Whenever you have cancer, you feel like you lose control. But I never felt like I was. I’ve tried over the years to have a positive outlook. I was always confident that I would do whatever I had to do to beat it.” The third time Jim had cancer was in 2008 when he had another lump on his thigh. When the doctor told him he had cancer, Jim thought he was joking, but then came the sobering truth. He said he was frustrated and angry for a couple of days, then picked himself up and started fighting. And won. Jim has been involved with Relay for the past 14 years and has served on the committee for the last few years, including this year. He gets around pretty good, sees 20/30, and wears contact lenses and glasses. He works at WTNS radio station and has been with the Sherriff’s Office Relay Team since 1991 when he worked with the Mounted Unit. Last year, his team raised just under $5,000. “If you think it’s going to beat you, it’s already got one leg up on you,” said Jim, “I’ll probably get it again one day, but I’m going to go down fighting.”

Not much was known about cancer in 1957; let alone how to treat it. But that’s when Jim Eckleberry was diagnosed when he was just 18 months old. Only recently did cancer really become widely recognized and accepted. In the 50s, when Jim was diagnosed with cancer in the eye, his mother and father only told a few people because being diagnosed and living with cancer wasn’t widely accepted in society. Jim’s family moved from Coshocton to Columbus to be closer to medical attention and Jim eventually had to have his left eye removed. His family then traveled to New York to receive treatment. Unfortunately, Jim received too much radiation and developed cataracts on his right eye. The cataracts were later removed in 1973 in New York. Because of the cancer in his eye, Jim was more susceptible to develop cancer later on, and he did. Twice. The second time was in 1988 when he developed a rare form of male breast cancer. “I’m more accepting of it now because I’ve learned that with my first cancer that I was prone to it, so it wasn’t that shocking,” said Jim. When he started having pain in his left breast, Jim went to his doctor, which then referred him to a breast cancer specialist. He said he’ll never forget that first visit. With pink flowers everywhere and not another man in site, Jim felt a little out of place. However, he received good news and

History of Relay for Life One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington, as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American Cancer Society office. He decided to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed—running marathons. In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma for more than 83 miles. Throughout the night, friends paid $25 to run or walk 30 minutes with him. He raised $27,000 to fight cancer. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. While he circled the track those 24 hours, he thought about how others could take part. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to fight cancer. Months later he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team relay event known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer. In 1986, 19 teams took part in the first team relay event on the track at the colorful, historical Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield. Now, this historic event is celebrated all over the world and has raised millions of dollars for the cure. Be a part of history on Friday, May 14 as over 50 teams walk the track at the fairgrounds in Coshocton and raise money for treatment. Never give up hope, and keep fighting for the survivors and remembering the loved ones lost.

Kevin Oliver “The Cash Man”
I started playing the guitar at the age of 17. I recorded my first gospel tape Title “Way below the bottom” in 1986 and two more tapes after that. I began playing the banjo and would sing on very few occasions. The more I sang, the more people wanted to hear more of me. About two years ago I started having jam sessions in my garage; mostly singing songs by Johnny Cash. I enjoy all the comments I hear and that is what has inspired me to continue singing. The Maxine Metheney Band The Maxine Metheney Band is comprised of several local members. Maxine Metheney plays piano, rhythm guitar and sings lead and harmony vocals for the band. Maxine came from a talented family of which she, her three sisters and both parents performed as “The Clay County Sweethearts” around the state of WV. She continues to play music as does other members of her family including her 73-year old mother. Sam Stotts is a bass player and sings lead and harmony vocals. Jamie Shamel is a very talented singer and drummer. Randy Stotts runs the sound for the band. Sam Cox plays lead guitar and sings lead vocals. We love what we do and to please the audience is an added bonus. Our music ranges from old country to new rock and roll and a touch of blues with a smooth sound mix.

Max Hardesty “One Man Band”
Max Hardesty will be performing in memory of his granddaughter Alana Branstetter who passed away in 2006 from leukemia at the age of 16. Max was born in Fresno and currently lives in Newcomerstown. Max and his late wife Virginia raised six children who all live in the area. Max was raised in a musical family and performs on the guitar, keyboard, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. I started to take accordion lessons at the age of 14 from Pietro in Dover. My parents had to sell a cow to buy my first accordion. I taught accordion for 25 years. After marrying Ray Tidrick, who played guitar, we started practicing and people started asking us to play for different occasions. I enjoy playing for different things. The people in the nursing homes enjoy the old songs and polkas. It’s great to see the residents eyes light up. I am playing today in honor of Marlene Limbacker who is fighting cancer at this time.
Northern Tradition Band
Northern Tradition is a band formed from old friends, all from separate bands in the past, but a long history of bluegrass close to our hearts. Christine Stotts (Hardesty), the one responsible for forming the band, comes from a family of musicians. Christine plays and sings in the band. Richard and Donna Gee have a long history of country and bluegrass music. Donna has the perfect harmony and lead vocals that blend to the vocals of Christine, which makes us stand out away from many other styles of bluegrass. Richard has been around a long time entertaining with the guitar and mandolin. Marion Prouty played for years and had a band which opened the show for many pros in the business. Mel Wallace began his hobby of public singing in 1997 when he was responsible for the karaoke music at the wedding reception of a friend. Later, a friend told him about a talent scout from Nashville who was coming to town to audition local singers and give them a chance to compete in a singing competition. Mel was later invited by one of the judges to record in a Studio just outside of Nashville. In 2004, he decided to sing at an eleven-year-old girl’s birthday party by renting an Elvis suit, buying the little girl a stuffed animal, and singing Elvis Presley’s song “Teddy Bear”. This occurred during a meeting of “The New Towne Cloggers” and he was asked to sing at many of their performances at local festivals. Mel appeared several times on stage with Mike Albert, a well-known Elvis tribute artist from the Columbus area. He then began to book his own shows and has performed while vacationing on cruises in the Caribbean and won an Elvis competition at Yeowza Resort in 2006.

There was an African American barber who came to New Castle about 1913 and got some of the boys together with instruments. He taught them to play and they made the original Walhonding Band. Somewhere in the 1950’s, they allowed girls to join and at this time they played only marches. Around 1980, under the direction of Don Nixon, they began to play other types of music as well as marches and became the Walhonding Rube Band. We incorporate musicians from several counties in the vicinity and will accept anyone who has an instrument and knows a little about playing.
