COSHOCTON - Are you a bride-to-be who loves to cook or maybe wants to learn a few basics in the kitchen before walking down the aisle? Here’s a fun and unique twist on the traditional bridal shower. Consider having a cooking class with you, your bridesmaids, and a few friends at the Village Pantry in Roscoe, located at 318 N. Whitewoman St. “I can theme these to anything and everything,” said Jenny Wilson, owner of The Village Pantry in Roscoe. “The palette is open. We can tailor it to fit your unique situation. breads and dessert, or a fun, simple class with salads, salsas and drinks, the Village Pantry can cater to your needs. The cost is $10 per person for a traditional cooking class. The price can vary depending on what all you want included in your class. The cost includes prep work, ingredients, and clean up. You don’t have to worry about a thing. Everything will be ready when you and your guests arrive. Contact Chris or Jenny Wilson at least two weeks in advance and to discuss the details. You must pay up front and if for any reason you need to cancel or postpone your party, let either Chris or Jenny know at least two days in advance. During your party, the store will be open to shop, but not open to the public if the party is scheduled after-hours. The building is handicap accessible. The Village Pantry cooking classes hold 25 people comfortably, but can do larger groups in shifts. Gifts, decoration, and cakes are allowed. These cooking classes are also a great idea for small anniversary parties. How great would it be to recreate the dinner the two of you shared on your wedding day? “It’s a great way to be able to share in the joy of someone’s wedding,” said Wilson. “I feel like I get to be a part of that.” To contact Chris or Jenny Wilson about a private cooking class for your bridal shower, anniversary, baby shower, or any occasion, call The Village Pantry at 575-4049. Invitations can be as fancy or simple as your budget allows COSHOCTON – Chris Mauer from Sprint Print can’t pick a certain color or style of wedding invitation that is more popular than others. “There are all kinds to choose from,” she said. “There is a wide variety and you can go from reasonable to very expensive.” Invitations can cost anywhere from $150 to $800. “It just depends on the number you order and which invitations you go with,” Mauer said. “The more detailed ones will be more expensive.” It takes two weeks to get invitations so Mauer suggests ordering them at least a month before you want them. She also said it is important to know the following information before you place your order: Wedding date, time and location; when the caterer needs reservations for the reception; and how many you really need. “If you just need 10 more you can’t do that,” Mauer said. “They only come in certain increments.” The bulk of invitations that Sprint Print handles are picked out of books full of examples shipped out by the companies they work with. “The books are updated a couple times a year with all the different trends and colors that are out there,” Mauer said. “They have everything in them from the simple to eloquent, movie star style.” You also can work with Sprint Print on your programs, thank yous and even your napkins. They also can do some invitations in house. “We can customize your invitations for you, but we don’t have as large as a selection as the books do,” Mauer said. “We’ve also had people bring in scrapbooking sheets (to use for wedding materials) that we can cut for you and print on, but you still need to give yourself about a month for those.” Sprint Print also can help you with etiquette for your invitations. “We have books available that can give you assistance,” Mauer said. Another option for your invitations is the do it yourself method. “It’s a huge cost savings,” said Deana Weinheimer, who is originally

from Coshocton, but now lives in Columbus. “I didn’t need all that many and figured it was cheaper to get do it yourself kits at a craft store like JoAnn’s or Michaels.” The kits Weinheimer purchased were about $20 each and she believes she needed three of them to get her 150 invitations. “The kits came with paper and envelopes and I did a little personalization with craft chalk to add color to them,” she said. “Getting my printer configured was the hardest part, but it didn’t take long to get the wording. The kits come with great ideas and templates.” It took Weinheimer 15-20 minutes to get her printer setup and after that she was done with the invitations in about two hours. “Once everything was set up it was nice and easy,” she said. “I just fed my paper in and hit print. It didn’t take long at all and they looked so nice.” Weinheimer got married in May 2011 and bought her invitation kits at the end of February of that year. “I would recommend doing invitations this way,” she said. “You have more options to personalize and you are not limited to the limitations of a vendor. You also can have fun with it because it’s an opportunity to get together with friends and family.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Bridal fair to be bigger and better

BY JOSIE SELLERS

BRIDAL SHOW The 2012 bridal fair was such a big hit that it had to be moved to a larger location. This year’s event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Coshocton Village Inn & Suites BEACON FILE PHOTOS

COSHOCTON – The 2012 bridal fair was a hit and this year should be bigger and better. “Last year went well and we outgrew the space we had,” said John Larson. “We had to turn some vendors away because we didn’t have room for them.” Larson’s Warehouse Steak n’ Stein is sponsoring the 2013 bridal fair with the help of the Coshocton Village Inn & Suites.

“Our first show was in the restaurant’s banquet room,” Larson said. “We had 19 vendors and just couldn’t grow anymore. The Village Inn & Suites was willing to team up with me and offer us a venue that is much larger.” The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Coshocton Village Inn & Suites, which is located at 115 N. Water St. “We can have at least 30 vendors there and we are planning on having photographers, florists, jewelers, Universe Bridal, information on tux rentals, AAA will be there with details on trips and so will different caterers,” Larson said. “It’s a one shop day for brides to be.” Photographer Kristi Timmons got two bookings out of last year’s bridal fair and is looking forward to attending this year’s event. “I liked it because it was local,” said Timmons, who owns Unique Videography. “I’ve done out of town shows before, but it was nice to see people I know and vendors from our town. It’s also a good time to socialize and display your work.” Timmons also likes the fair because it gives her a chance to meet face to face with people. “I think that’s important when you are hiring someone to do work for your wedding,” she said. “It helps reassure them and when I book people I want them to be at ease.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

COSHOCTON - Bridesmaids dresses have come a long way and so have options for tuxedos. “The dresses are more fashion forward and can really compliment the bride,” said Teri Misener, buyer at Universe Bridal & Prom. “We used to joke that you could cut off your bridesmaid dress and use it again after the

However, she encourages starting early with planning if at all possible. “I believe the happiest brides are the ones who start in advance because they are less stressed,” Misener said. A good time frame for bridesmaid dress shopping is three to four months before the wedding. “We will measure your bridal party and help you find dresses that accommodate most everybody,” Misener said. “More designers are coming out with dresses that flatter size 0 to 32.” Misener also is seeing more and more brides pick a color and then telling her bridesmaids that they can wear any dress by a certain designer in that shade. “This used to be taboo, but now you can have your bridesmaids wear different dresses and still all look good together.” Trends in colors right now are purple, bright yellow, hot pink,

a little. We also see some people doing pocket squares, but few seem to get those for weddings. Weddings are still more basic.” Guys often don’t always seem to have a lot of say in what is worn in the wedding. “The bride usually runs the show, but more and more guys are taking an active part in the process of choosing their tuxes,” Misener said. Murray agreed with Misener. “We can show the groom and his groomsmen all the options, but sometimes the bride has already been here to pick the tuxes out,” he said. Both dresses and tuxedos start around $99. “It really is about the bride and groom so when you are asked to be in a wedding enjoy the ride and be respectful,” Misener said. turquoise and lime green. Two-toned colored dresses also are becoming more popular. “Most designers have 45 to 75 different colors of bridesmaids’ dresses,” Misener said. “The colors are endless.” Brides also shouldn’t be afraid to change their minds on colors or styles once they get to the store with their party. “Some come in with ideas and then go in a completely opposite direction once dresses start getting tried on,” said Tish Mozena, bridal consultant at Universe Bridal & Prom. Even though the options for dresses are almost endless, Misener admits that it’s tough to make everyone in your party happy. “I feel in my heart that it’s the bride’s day and it’s an honor to be asked to share it with her,” she said. “If you can’t make the commitment, bow out gracefully. You also need to be responsible. It’s a big financial commitment to be in someone’s wedding. We need to get your measurements and get your deposits so we can order the dresses as close together as we can so they are part of the same dye lot.” Misener also encourages bridesmaids to have fun. “Wear what she asks you to wear and take one for the team,” she said. Universe Bridal & Prom employees also can help you pick out shoes and accessories for your bridesmaids, mother of the bride and groom dresses, outfits for children involved with your wedding and tuxedos for the groomsmen. “There are a lot of fresh new looks for tuxedos and more variety than ever before,” Misener said. Black will always be a popular choice, but ivory, khaki, taupe and brown are also available and the color options for vests and ties are growing. “The classics with tuxedos will never go away, but now you just have more choices and ways to coordinate with the bride and bridesmaids,” Misener said. She suggests tuxedos be taken care of six to eight weeks before the wedding. “It’s a lot easier with the guys because you are not matching dye lots, but during popular months you might end up competing with things like prom to get the tux you really want,” Misener said. According to Steve Murray from Carroll’s Men’s Shop the process of ordering a tux is pretty simple. “We will get your measurements and have you in and out in five minutes,” he said. Murray’s prides itself on how tuxedos fit their customers. “We want it to fit like you are buying it,” he said. “We encourage everyone to come in and try them on before the wedding to make sure everything is right. We can fit any size tux from the smallest to the largest.” Both stores will outfit the groom and his groomsmen with everything from their shoes to the vest to the tie. “We do a few bow ties,” Murray said. “They are starting to come back

If you and your groom are into the outdoors, you might want to try Clary Gardens. “People looking for a really unique venue with an organic nature feel will like it,” said Chris Campbell from Clary Gardens. “It speaks to people that are into nature and the outdoors.” Couples can use the grounds for both their wedding and reception. “When you contact us we need to know what you’re interested in, the size of your event and the date,” Campbell said. “We book up very fast. There are already several dates set for spring, summer and fall.” At Clary Gardens, couples can choose between the garden house interior front room (up to 20 people), back room (12 people), exterior patio (30 to 40 people) and outdoor amphitheater (200 people). The amphitheater has built-in seating, and tables and chairs can be provided for the garden house rooms and patio, but couples choosing other locations on the property must provide their own. As far as decorations go, there are only a few simple rules to follow. “You can set up structures like garden arches as long as they are not permanent and you cannot do anything that will damage the property,” Campbell said. “You also can not use balloons or throw rice because both are dangers to the environment and our wildlife.” Campbell noted that Clary Gardens is a perfect place to use organic decorations. “A lot of brides use pots of flowers and shepherds hooks with mason jars that have candles or flowers in them,” she said. Most locations on the grounds also have access to electricity. “You will have it on every one of our venues unless you choose to get married in the woodlands, which also is an option,” Campbell said. “It’s a beautiful clearing that I keep hoping someone gets married at. It’s gorgeous.” Those renting locations on the grounds also are responsible for clean up and keeping their event alcohol free. “We are looking into changing that, but currently the wine and barbeque fest we host is the one day a year we have a permit for,” Campbell said. As far as cost goes, Campbell said Clary Gardens is very reasonable. “From what brides tell me we are the greatest deal in town,” she said. Most of the spaces at Clary Gardens are rented for weddings in four hour blocks for anywhere from $100 to $325. Receptions on the property are $75 for the first hour and $25 for each additional hour. If you have your reception only on the grounds it is $125 for the first hour and those renting the garden house also get the use of the kitchen there. “You can have really sweet and intimate wedding receptions here,” Campbell said. “It’s a property that you just need to take a tour of and see if it fits your needs.” For $500 you also can get the amphitheater for the wedding and the

garden house for getting ready and your rehearsal dinner. The garden house also is often rented for $75 for four hours for the bridal party to get ready in. “It’s convenient,” Campbell said. “You have a place to keep your fresh flowers and refreshments in the kitchen and bathrooms. It’s like being at home, but instead you are right here where you are going to get married.” The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum and the Pomerene Center for the Arts also create cozy and intimate settings for weddings and receptions. The museum offers both its lower level meeting room and special exhibit gallery for gatherings. Seating is available for anywhere from 50 to 120 people and rental prices range from $65 to $160. “We just ask that you keep the food in those rooms and when you call for the special exhibit room we will let you know if we can work around what is on display at that time,” said Patti Malenke, executive director of the museum. “When we had the Pop Culture exhibit in there it filled the room, but when we have things like the Elementary Art exhibit we can easily work something around it.” The museum also has tables and chairs that renters can use and allows alcohol at gatherings held there. The staff also expects renters to clean up after their celebration. “If you are interested in using our rooms just give us a call and we will give you a sheet with all the prices,” Malenke said. “We have very little booked right now.” The Pomerene Center for the Arts is another great historical place to have a reception or even your wedding. “The benefit of having your event here is that it needs minimal decorations,” said Kristi Timmons, assistant director at the Pomerene Center. “It has a vintage look and a historical feel because it is one of the oldest houses in Coshocton. We’ve had several people not decorate inside at all and just use some flowers outside or an archway.” When renting the Pomerene Center, you also are given the option to use the tables and chairs they have available for 100 people and a tent that can be set up outside on the lawn. Alcohol also can be served there. “If you are going to have over 100 people you are going to have to bring in more tables and chairs,” Timmons said. “We’ve also had people rent an extra tent to setup behind ours for larger outdoor parties.” The Pomerene Center offers two rates to interested renters. The six hour one is $75 for the first hour and $25 for each additional hour. The second one is for 12 hours and is $350 and then $25 for each additional hour. Setup and tear down time must be included in both time frames. “You must setup and tear down and leave the house as it was,” Timmons said. “Artwork also needs to be left hung on the walls.” For more options on where to hold your reception, visit www. visitcoshocton.com. COSHOCTON - When planning your honeymoon you may want to consider some of these tips compiled from research done by Larene Hall, owner of Happy Cat Travel. Begin early and share the planning. To ensure that both parties enjoy the honeymoon, couples should consider making all the decisions together. Define ideal. If just one person will be doing the planning, he or she shouldn’t assume that because they have always dreamt of honeymooning in a tropical paradise their soon-to-be-spouse shares that dream. Consider these questions as soon as honeymoon talks begin: - What is most important? Suntan lotion, sand and surf or the privacy and seclusion of a cozy mountain retreat? - Are you looking to experience new cultures or do you just want to get away from it all? - Are you more interested in going around the corner or around the world? - Do you want to spend more on the wedding or the honeymoon? - What sounds better: A cruise, a package vacation or an all-inclusive resort, something tailored just for you? Pick your paradise. When it comes to honeymoon planning, most

couples try to select the destination first. However, it is better to decide on the type of vacation first then narrow down your destination options. Make time for yourselves. Pad the honeymoon schedule with generous amounts of free time. A rushed and overly organized honeymoon might feel too much like the wedding. Instead, plan a few enjoyable activities and leave lots of opportunities to just enjoy each other’s company. Set a tentative budget. Talk about expectations and priorities from the very beginning and decide what you might splurge on and where you might cut corners. Splurge on accommodations. No matter what type of vacation package a couple chooses, they will spend an enormous amount of time in their room or cabin. This is not a place to cut corners. Brides-use your maiden name. Unless a couple is planning on taking a delayed honeymoon, the bride won’t have time to change the name on her passport and driver’s license. She should use her maiden name on visas, airline tickets, etc., so they match as it appears on official documents. Leave it to a professional. After “I do,” a couple’s two favorite words will be “stress free,” if they opt to work with an expert, such as a travel consultant who specializes in planning honeymoons. For stress-free travel plans–especially those with multiple steps like a honeymoon–seek out the expert advice of a travel agent. A good travel agent can save money as well as time, two enormous factors for a couple trying to plan a wedding and a honeymoon simultaneously.

There are many local venues in the community to have a beautiful wedding. But if you’re looking for a more traditional faith-based ceremony, consider hosting your special day in a church setting. “They’re coming to a faith-based, Godly wedding,” said Jim Humphrey, District Superintendent of the Three Rivers District of the United Methodist Church. “They’re being united by God, not just the state of Ohio. They’re coming to a religious ceremony.” For couples who decide to marry in a Methodist Church, pre-marital counseling is always required, at least one to five sessions. Humphrey explained that most of the counseling focuses on communication, finances, in-laws, personalities, sexual desires, and expectations within the marriage. “I want to see if they’re working on their faith,” said Jon Carlisle, pastor at the Presbyterian Church, which also requires three or four sessions of pre-marital counseling. “Are you working on your faith with Jesus Christ? We talk about family background. How did they fall in love? What do they see in each other, and what will keep them going? We try to talk about issues that may come up later.” Carlisle said that if the couple is not interested in pre-marital counseling and attending worship, he has the right to decline the marriage, but can recommend other pastors in the area. He also has the right to decline a marriage if he does not believe the couple is ready for such a commitment. Each couple has a different idea of what they want from a church ceremony, and as long as it’s within reason, variations can be made to the traditional service. “Most people tend to want the traditional ceremony with traditional format,” said Janette Williams, secretary at Coshocton Church of the Nazarene. “Some come in with their own idea of what they want, and as long as it’s reasonable, we are willing to run with it.” “They don’t need to follow a traditional order of marriage,” said Humphrey, “They can stray from that, but within limits.” For couples who have a different idea of how they want their wedding ceremony, make sure to tell the pastor prior to the wedding during a premarital session to make sure both the church and the couple come to an agreement on the ceremony. Couples need to let their church of choice know as soon as possible that they want to marry at their church so that reservations can be made. Both Williams and Humphrey agree that churches need to know at least six months in advance to ensure the date is available and reserved for the

wedding. Couples do not need to belong to a church to be married in the church. However, there is a fee for both members and non-members. Williams reminds couples that there are fees included by just having the church open, and the fee helps pay for water, electricity, gas, janitorial service, and so forth. Carlisle said they try to keep things as inexpensive for the couple as possible, and they can also save money by having their reception there at the church. Most churches will also allow other pastors to come in and perform the ceremony. However, the pastor needs to give his or her permission. “The pastor at the church, that’s his or her pulpit,” said Humphrey. “That’s his or her church. The pastor needs to give their permission.” Humphrey also said the church is open to doing renewal of vows on anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, or whatever day the married couple chooses. “When you make these vows before God, it’s between the three of you, the couple getting married and God,” he said.
