AS I WRITE THIS NOTE, we have just
WITH EVERY COSA I attend I’m
held the 18th Annual COSA awards in Toronto where over 20 winners received recognition for their superior customer service. I look forward to hosting this event each year and connecting with the men and women who make our business what it is today. Because without these special talented beauty experts the industry would not celebrate the success it currently enjoys. Patricia Clare, NeoStrata national trainer, talked about the role of microinfluencers and the importance of listening while dealing with our customers every day. If you were not able to attend, visit our website at Cosmeticsmag.com and watch the entire COSA event or check out page 33 of this issue where all our winners are featured. Congratulations to all this year’s finalists and winners. Have a great Christmas selling season.
blown away by the stories of each of our winners. After decades of serving on the front line of the beauty industry, you are armed with countless tales of what it means to go above and beyond. I’ve learned so much from listening to these stories — about how to try harder, do more and dig deeper. This year was bittersweet for me as it was my last COSAs because I’m taking some time off to look after my daughter. But I’ll continue to read and watch along, especially when I need a reminder to be passionate, determined and kind — all words that I associate with Canada’s beauty advisors, and with the small but mighty team behind Cosmetics magazine. I hope you enjoy this issue, packed with bedazzling trends (page 12) and fab new product launches (page 15) that have you covered for presents and parties galore.
Cheers!
Happy holidays and keep in touch,

TEEN DRAMA EUPHORIA broke the internet with its debut this summer on HBO — and not just because of its controversial content. The show’s beauty looks created by makeup head Doniella Davy were mesmerizing and had Instagram-culture taking note. Using all that sparkles — metallics, glitter, crystals, jewels and stars — Davy’s appliqué play is nothing short of brilliant. And from pop stars and runway models to a classic sneaker brand, it seems everyone’s now channelling the show’s chic, bedazzled characters. At Marco De Vincenzo’s F/W 2019 presentation, models were dusted with gold shimmering flakes from cheek to cheek, and at Adean, tiny pearls were popped in the inside corner of eyelids and draped over royal blue manicures. Even Katy Perry’s makeup artist Michael Anthony cited Euphoria character Maddy Perez as his muse for Perry’s recent frosted pink on-stage look. Fashion-wise, Miu Miu runways shimmered with clusters of jewels creating height and texture on shoulders and pattern play on dresses. Meanwhile athletic shoe company Reebok took inspiration from a Cardi B mani for its limited-edition sneaker artfully detailed by hand with pink Swarovski crystals. INVISIBLE BROWS @PRADA
monobrows… just when you thought you’d seen it all, along come invisible brows. Once the territory of spectacle-seeking stars such as Lady Gaga, they first hit our radars on Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But now barely there brows have shed their slightly freakish feel: Winter runways make a softer, Tilda Swintonesque statement, as Prada pairs lightened arches with milky-white complexions for a futuristic vibe and Emporio Armani features a faux-bleached brow, using makeup to fade the hairs coupled with a simple red lip. Self-made beauty guru, Myles Sexton says removing colour from the brows can drastically alter the canvas of the face. To try the trend without the commitment, he recommends dipping a disposable mascara wand into a waterproof pot concealer and brushing it though the brows. “I would suggest using a warmer undertone when selecting the concealer so it does not turn too grey within the brows,” says Sexton. Then comb the brows up and down, coating the entire hair with the product. To finish, he says, “Add a little bit of setting powder tapped on top with a fluffy eye shadow brush.” — Moriah Campbell

meets Lisa Stansfield edge this season as gel-heavy looks take over the runway. In an artistic departure from the century-old kiss curl, Burberry models sported intricately-gelled swirls and weaves below the hair line. Prada and JW Anderson brought to mind thoughts of stretched-out finger waves with sweeping sections of gelled hair giving way to a deep side part. Gel-fanatic and hair artist with Toronto’s Palm Sunday salon Kendra Medeiros recommends starting with deeply parted wet hair and about a handful of a thick cream-based gel. “It’s important to saturate the hair all the way through so the style stays put,” she says. Then using a tight comb or your fingers, pull the hair into the desired waves or curls, setting the hair in place across the forehead and tying back the length. Once the gel has set, “finish off the look by adding a small amount of oil over-top the gel to add extra shine and hydration.” — Moriah Campbell

RETINOL RESOLUTIONS 28
Greet the new year with new skin — literally — thanks to innovations that make retinol results better than ever By Kate Kennedy R E T I N O L has long been skincare’s anti-aging holy
grail. So why isn’t it on everyone’s nightstand? Harsh formulations in early treatments may have left a lot of faces flushed, but modern innovations have revolutionized this vitamin A derivative—even for sensitive skin. New plant-sourced ingredients offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits that soothe and revitalize, while futuristic encapsulation formulas deliver retinol to skin sans irritation. Even acids are rubbing shoulders with retinol in sophisticated formulas (though it’s not recommended to pair them DIY-style at home). Now every age and skin stage can easily up their A-game.

Today’s beginner options are packed with squads of skin soothers and hydrators, but it’s still important to start slow. “I usually suggest starting with the lowest strength and titrate it up slowly,” says Kristy Bailey, a dermatologist with FCP Dermatology in Toronto. Use it every third night before bed, increasing frequency and strength as your skin adjusts. Newbies can buffer retinol formulas with moisturizer or look for creams with humectants and anti-inflammatory ingredients such as avocado, chamomile, lavender, shea butter and hyaluronic acid. If you’re not ready to take the retinol leap, Herbivore’s Bakuchiol Retinol Alternative Smoothing Serum spotlights bakuchiol, a buzzworthy plant-derived option that offers similar anti-aging benefits, but is safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Looking to take things up a level? Today’s retinol formulas up to 1% (the highest percentage available without a prescription in Canada) include inventive ingredient pairings that drive incredible results. Traditionally, consumers have been told to avoid combining retinol with acids because they work best at different pH levels — and already carry a high risk of irritation when used alone. But thanks to innovative stabilization and encapsulation techniques, as well as rigorously tested formulas, brands like Paula’s Choice, Kate Somerville and Dermalogica have all released products combining retinol with vitamin C to five-star reviews. Lactic acid, another previously taboo retinol pairing, is featured prominently in Retinol Reform, the star product in celebrity esthetician Shani Darden’s eponymous line. The result is the stuff of Hollywood lore.

Ready for something stronger? Clever stabilization and delivery methods make 0.3%–0.5% retinol formulas a possibility for mid-level users or beginners who want to see faster results. Encapsulated retinol decreases the likelihood of irritation and allows users to try a higher strength formula, says Dr. Julia Carroll of Compass Dermatology in Toronto (imagine lipid bubbles with a retinol core). This technology is used in SkinCeuticals’ new Retinol 0.3 cream, a favourite of Carroll’s. Reversa’s new Retin[A]list Cream also features encapsulated retinol and low-molecular hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated. Adventurous types might enjoy NeoStrata’s new Retinol 0.3% Overnight Peel, a medispa-inspired treatment that gives skin a weekly wow-worthy dose of stabilized retinol.

POUR ELLE
POUR LUI
QUEL PARFUM OFFRIR ?

STILA Heaven’s Hue Highlighter in Kitten, $43, at Shoppers Drug Mart.
A: THE PERFECT RED LIP I find during the holidays a lot of customers are trying to find that perfect red lipstick to complete their holiday makeup. Some customers dance around the idea of getting a red lipstick but will shy away because they think they can’t wear red; however, it’s about finding the right red lipstick for each customer. Get them in the chair, show them different textures, finishes and pigment to gauge their comfort level. It’s a great opportunity to show the customer what red suits them! ADD SOME (SUBTLE) SPARKLE Adding a loose sparkle to the cheeks or even a little shimmer to their eyeshadow or highlighter can really transform a customer’s look from regular everyday makeup to holiday glam. (Especially if it’s paired with their holiday red lipstick!) My favourite sparkles to add — on customers and myself — during the holidays are the loose Lise Watier Duo Shadow & Glitter in Opalescence and Stila Heaven’s Hue Highlighter in Kitten.

ENCOURAGE SOME TLC One of the challenges BA’s run into during the holiday season is getting the customer to spend a little time and money on themselves as the holidays can be so expensive and busy. However, when a BA can get the customer to sit down for a little holiday touch up it can really brighten and de-stress and remind them of the benefits of treating themselves every now and again!

ONE OF THE BEST parts of winter
is the stunning views of snowy landscapes dotted with silvery birch trees. Now, those pretty branches go beyond seasonal décor — birch water can actually soothe skin and brighten your complexion when applied topically. Elise McCormick and Joanne Sherrard, co-founders of Canadian brand Aurum Skincare, stumbled upon the benefits after their skin struggled to acclimatize to the harsh conditions of Dawson City, Yukon. “We came across reference to a medicated skincare product that was marketed in Russia in the 1970s,” says McCormick. Using birch water as its base, the product reportedly reduced inflammation and was used to help heal wounds. The pair developed a natural biofermentation process that enriches birch water (which they source each winter by tapping local wild trees) with prebiotics. The formula turned out to be the ideal solution to their skincare woes. (Even better, they won the Yukon Innovation Prize in 2019 and when the products went on sale last November, they quickly sold out.)
Dr. Jennifer Salsberg, an assistant professor of medical and cosmetic dermatology at the University of Toronto, says more studies are needed to examine birch water’s direct effect on skin. But she does confirm that it contains amino acids, minerals and hydroxy acids, all of which benefit skin. “Some studies suggest that birch water also has antimicrobial benefits, which may have a role in [treating] patients with acne.” In fact, Natalie Pergar, lead skincare trainer for Éminence (which recently released its Pure Forest Collection that features birch water as a key ingredient), says all skin types can benefit from birch water. “Over the short-term, your skin’s tone will improve; long-term, it will become firmer and help minimize fine lines,” she says. Dr. Salsberg points out that birch sap ferments quickly, so look for a product that contains ingredients to stabilize and preserve it. If you’re trying it in essence form, apply after you cleanse and before your toner or serum, morning and night says Salsberg. We say: Bring on the birch fest.

COLOUR COOL The Look: Freckled Perfection Why We Love It: Dickson effortlessly captures the sun-kissed look with her freckle placement and pairs it with the ultimate tinted lip and brow. #swoon.
Vancouver-based makeup artist Leigh Dickson had us at her Insta description: “Little bit retro. Little bit rock & roll. Lots of colour.” She brightens screens and faces alike with her inspirational makeup transformations on YouTube and Instagram, with a combined following of over 370,000. (No wonder the UK’s model agency Established has snatched her up…) By Stephanie Hicks

The Look: Weekend at Bernie’s Why We Love It: The printed shirt really does it for us, but we can’t ignore Dickson’s single wisp, her insane brows and luminous space-high cheek bones. WINTER 2019 | COSMETICSMAG.COM
The Look: Smoke Show Why We Love It: Just in time for the holidays, this smoky eye is on our “learn how to perfect” list. Stunning. The Look: And the Award Goes To… Why We Love It: The clean canvas of her face makeup is the supporting actor to her fierce eye. (And can we talk about her hair colour?) 83
