Spring Scoop

The LATEST in innovation, technology and care for your HAIR. It’s a new year and a new issue and we have so many things to be excited for.

This issue is a celebration of everything new and innovative in the cosmetics industry for 2024. From new trends to try and fresh off the production line ingredients 101, we are pleased to bring you our trusted stories with some new ones like Back to Earth’s commitment to reforestation.

This issue is packed with great stories on all that is new. Starting with the latest technology in skincare treatments from manufacturer Xcite. Brands and products continue to evolve and one of the biggest product trends is in hair care. Xyon is a brand that offer at home treatments for hair loss and it’s not only for men.

Our spotlights this issue focus on two icons in their own right. Marie Farel, President of Prestilux in Montreal shares her background story and ambitions as she leads Prestilux and its 16 brand portfolio. On the beauty advisor side, we take an inside look at Jessica White from Shoppers Drug Mart. Her leadership strengths led her team to a Beauty’s Best service award win in 2023.

Our French section is filled with great new products and inspirations to get you into a new spring regiment. And with winter behind us, according to the groundhogs, it’s time to repair that damaged winter skin and we offer a story on just that. Lastly, acne is no stranger to many and especially young cohorts groups, so we have the goods right from the dermatologists mouths, that CeraVe is top choice for troubled skin.

As always, I had a lot of fun working with the entire team – our contributors Lora Grady and Vânia Aguiar; our graphic designer Natalia; and the wonderful support of Amy, Michele, Luca and Sue. Thank you all for your support, efforts, and energy.

In honour of Women’s History Month, this issue is packed with stories about women, by women and for women!

Happy Spring!

health: A solution for hair loss

Dr. Simon Pimstone, MD, PhD, FRCPC, Simon has spent more than 25 years dedicated to life sciences as a clinician, a scientist and an entrepreneur, both in the for-profit and the not-for-profit sectors.

How XYON works: Options for your Hair Loss needs

Firstly, XYON offers a platform for individuals with hair loss to be seen by a physician and receive bespoke prescription treatment plans if required. The physician consultations are at no cost to the customer. The cost of the treatment depends on which treatment and how long they remain on the treatment.

Secondly, XYON offers OTC non-prescription products such as DHT blocking shampoo and conditioners. These non-prescription offerings such as the natural ingredient DHT blocking shampoo is priced at $45 per bottle and generally will last the customer 3 months of use.

“We believe XYON's offerings, provide outstanding customer value.” Says Simon Pimstone. “Customers of course always have the choice. For some the cost might be high, for others, it might not be. We have meaningful costs that are required in each offering, so the pricing reflects what we believe is the value of the product.”

Not Just for Men

Although rooted in hair loss treatment for men, XYON is now offering women’s treatment and products too. For both current offerings, the options are used by

thousands of men currently. XYON as a platform has only been around for one year. The brand has seen very rapid growth in that timeframe. More and more men are using the prescription platform and the non-prescription products each month and given their very recent launch into the women's hair loss market, XYON expects to see the women's demographic grow significantly over the coming months.” We have focused on the DTC market for the time being but as the brand grows, we expect to include a retail presence as well” adds Simon. The brand continues to add awareness and has had the privilege of some social media influencers as very satisfied users of some of our services or products. This adds to very good visibility for XYON in the hair loss market in North America.

The DNA of the Products

The prescription offerings are either Health Canada approved medications or in some cases, compounded topical formulations that incorporate excipients that are widely and safely used in cosmetics at concentrations well within the approved range.

The non-prescription shampoo and conditioner offerings are made in Canada using ingredients well accepted in cosmetic products with safety data supporting their use and at concentrations used. The DHT blocking ingredients are all natural ingredients. XYON does not use sulphates or parabens. None of their products are tested on animals and all are compliant with the clean beauty definition used in the cosmetics industry.

6 COSMETICSMAG.COM | SPRING 2024

“In our view, this is an absolute requirement today.” adds Simon.

Simon himself has experienced hair loss, which started in his 20’s, and today he is fully bald. Today Simon is a bald CEO of a hair loss company and washing hair is not a need and unfortunately, no medication can grow back hair on a completely bald scalp. So, despite his look, Simon is not the poster child!

Simon does add that he had experienced the anxiety of hair loss firsthand and given his clinical and scientific training and experience, he fortunately has the knowledge to help others who may wish to retain their hair. Simon says that “for the most part, androgenetic or pattern hair loss is optional today.”

From XYON Product Users:

It has absolutely improved my hair conditions. Noticeable hair growth since I am on XYON treatment. - M.L.

I have had a great experience using the product. The serum makes my hair feel fuller and the compound has made a difference resulting in new hair growth. - J.D.

2. Hair and winter blues

Is your hair feeling the winter blues? Well, frizz no further! Noughty Haircare has compiled a list of tips that will help you reduce the frizz and the ultimate Noughty side-kicks to help you out.

1. THINK CLEAN — KNOW WHAT’S IN YOUR PRODUCTS

2. LOCK IN THAT MOISTURE

Dry hair is inherently more susceptible to frizz. Incorporating a nourishing hair mask such as the To The Rescue Intense Moisture Treatment into your weekly regimen can significantly enhance moisture, minimize breakage, and control frizz. The Noughty experts always recommend masking before conditioning so the treatment can penetrate clean strands.

It’s important to steer clear of harsh ingredients like sulphates to create a routine for achieving a frizz-free mane. Sulphates can prove detrimental to hair by stripping away its natural oils and inducing dryness. Opting for sulphate-free alternatives like Noughty’s Frizz Magic Shampoo ensures a mild cleansing process that preserves hair moisture.

3. CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION

After applying your treatment mask, use an ample amount of conditioner to lock in the moisture and boost your resistance against frizz. Opt for Noughty’s Frizz Magic Conditionerwith powerful actives such as marula oil and daikon radish extract, it will help to coat hair and trap moisture inside the strands.

4. REDUCE HEAT

Try using less heat increasing heat protection when you do.

The Frizz Magic Line is effective when applied to air-dried hair, allowing you to refrain from using heat tools on more relaxed days. However, when you do decide to style your hair, the Frizz Magic Serum is enriched with natural actives, offering robust heat protection of up to 220 degrees.

All products are available at Shoppers Drug Mart, Walmart Canada and London Drugs.

SPRING 2024

With a career path that started in advertising and then as the first employee at the well-known intimates brand KNIX, Amy Welsman knew she wanted to do more with her career. It was not until she had her first child that she recognized a void in the market. With a colicky baby, and having concerns about germs and bacteria, she explored products in the market. What she found was that the majority of hand sanitizer was unpleasant smelling, packaged in single disposable plastic, and heavily formulated with alcohol and caused drying out of the skin.

So, Amy set her sites on transforming, if you will, the sanitizer category. “I wanted to take a utilitarian product and turn it into a beauty product”. So, after much research and finding manufacturing partners, Amy launched PAUME in January 2021.

A hand care brand like no other

The peaks in demand for sanitizer products from the pandemic were over. But despite not having the initial rush and demand, it seemed to work to her advantage in terms of where PAUME stood in the category.

WHO NEEDS ANOTHER SANITIZER?

“I wanted to build a legacy brand”, says Amy. “Sanitizer was our hero product, but I also wanted to look at hand care overall. The category was lacking leadership and point of view, and I viewed this as an opportunity for disruption.”

Amy had a vision to create a skincare routine for your hands. With the surge in cosmetic treatments in hands, including laser and fillers, there really was

10 COSMETICSMAG.COM | SPRING 2024 3. EDITOR’S PICKS |

a demand for hand care products that actually delivered results. And so, the building out the hand care story began to unfold with an exfoliating hand soap, a hand cream that had probiotics, a nail and cuticle cream that offered multiple benefits, a serum targeted at the signs of aging, and a mask that treated more chronic skin conditions. And accessories followed to take better care of your hands.

The brand has seen significant growth over the past two years with last year seeing a huge surge. Amy has an omni channel approach for growth today and the brand is sold at boutique retailers like the Detox Market, well.ca and Holts.

The sanitizer remains a hero product for the brand. Going back to her roots starting the brand, Amy has really created the vision for a new mom essential –sanitizer for your nursery that’s good for your skin, sustainable, and safe to use around baby. Amy went as far as designing her own pump. For someone who had never worked at or for a beauty brand, Amy is well on her way to a successful career as brand owner.

THE ORIGINS OF THE BRAND NAME

“I chose the word PAUME because it was the French word for palm of the hand, and I loved the way it looked as a logo and on our packaging. I also love the simplicity of a one-word brand name (essential, in my opinion!).”

PAUME’S DNA

“Success of a broader level is to make PAUME truly synonymous with hand care, by defining and leading the category. On a consumer level, PAUME is on a mission to provide a superior experience and ritual around taking care of your hands. The number of people I speak to whose hands are a source of distress for them - eczema, chronic dryness, sun damage, signs of aging, brittle nails, peeling cuticles, cracked skin – Is amazing to me. Our hands seem to be a major source of self-consciousness. No body care brand is taking hand care on in a focused and intentional way, and my hope is that PAUME defines and leads this category.”

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

I am so proud of what we accomplished in 2023. We made some major changes at the end of 2022namely, firing our agencies and outside consultants who weren’t having the impact they had promised - and betting on our small but mighty internal team. We grew 2.5x in 2023 - nearly tripling our ecommerce sales and adding some major retail partnerships (Holt Renfrew and Blue Mercury, to name a few). It was a seminal year for us and I have to stop and remind myself of what we accomplished in such a short period. That being said, and every founder will echo this feeling, what keeps me up at night is the prospect of doing it all over again this year and keeping up with our momentum. Once you set a new bar, it needs to be at least met or exceeded, and that can be extremely stressful. January especially triggers that stress as I face a new year, but it’s also exciting as I’ve learned that there are so many possibilities and opportunities around the corner, you just have to chase them. And if you’re lucky, sometimes they come to you.

Mission reforestation

In 2023, Cosmetics Magazine featured a story on a Canadian brand that was making a huge difference for the environment. From that story, we knew that Kiley Routley, the founder of Back to Earth, was always on the green side of things. The ingredients, the products and their packaging are all examples of just how green this brand is. But apart from bringing natural skincare into the market, this brand and organization really want to be stewards for the environment in other ways, according to their CEO Keon Zhang. Keon shared that Back to Earth wants and needs to stand behind it’s 3 PILLARS which are formulation, sustainability, and brand purpose.

“If we want to be the best stewards of the environment, we need to walk the talk and packaging is a huge piece of that,” says Keon. “We need to reduce our carbon footprint and waste and we did that through our packaging. We do not use cartons, or any secondary packaging and all our packaging is square allowing more versatility.”

Back to Earth uses only direct print on the packaging making it easier for high temp facilities to remove the ink and recycle the package. With the use of bioplastics and biodegradable sugar cane, packages can break down in 5 and 2 years respectively.

“That was our first step” adds Keon, “then our focus turned to our Purpose. We always knew that reforestation was something we wanted to be part of and just in the planting of one tree, but a larger scale, more sincere way that would have and make an impact for the long term.”

In 2013, British Columbia experienced the most disruptive fire recorded in Canadian history and the epicenter was in Vernon, where the headquarters of Back to Earth is located. The square footage of destruction was just shy of the total area of the country of Belgium.

“We felt that it was our duty to take part in reforestation and we started that and today we are proud to say we have two Back to Earth forests – one in British Columbia and the other in Los Angeles,” says Keon. “Our entire value chain is about being very honest. The offset in our purpose will come from reforestation.”

With our brand origins rooted in British Columbia, members of our team and community were deeply affected by the wildfires in 2023. It is our corporate responsibility and completely aligned with our values to help in the restoration of forests taken by the wildfires.

Back To Earth Skin has partnered with One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization focused on global reforestation, to embark on our reforestation initiative. We have started in 2023 with the planting of two entire forests, one in British Columbia and another in Los Angeles, that have been named the Back to Earth Forests.

FIRST BACK TO EARTH FORESTS:

CANADA

Lytton, British Columbia

Area Planted:

1.24 acres (approx. 54, 014 square feet)

Types of Trees:

Mix of coniferous and deciduous.

USA

Toulumne County, California.

Area Planted:

1.24 acres (approx. 54, 014 square feet)

Types of Trees:

Mix of coniferous and deciduous.

Their reforestation initiative is a long-term initiative that is a part of our brand DNA, a key pillar of our brand purpose as stewards of the environment and setting the new standard for the natural skincare industry.

“Our DREAM will be realized when these forests become mature, and our families and shareholders can walk with pride through them.” adds Keon.

5. The AI revolution in cosmetics

In the ever-evolving world of cosmetics, where innovation meets beauty, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as a revolutionary force, reshaping the landscape from product development to customer engagement. In an industry that thrives on creativity and personalization, AI is not just a tech trend but a strategic asset that’s changing the game for cosmetics retailers and brands.

THE SPARK OF CREATIVITY: AI IN RETAIL OPERATIONS

In the realm of cosmetics, where the quest to satisfy the customer and gain market share never ceases, AI is stepping in as a muse for creativity in business. Imagine a world where AI helps bring the right product to the right customer every time, resulting in customer satisfaction and retention while cutting costs and increasing GMROI. This is not futuristic fiction but today's reality, where Retail AI is reinventing how retail is done.

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS: A CRYSTAL BALL FOR BEAUTY TRENDS

Beyond the drawing board, AI's prowess extends into predictive analytics, a tool that's becoming indispensable for staying ahead in the competitive cosmetics industry.

By harnessing historical sales data, consumer behavior, and trend analyses, predictive analytics offers insights into what beauty products will resonate with consumers before they even hit the shelves.

This foresight allows cosmetics retailers to make informed decisions on purchasing and production, inventory management, marketing, and product launches, minimizing the risk of overstocking or missing out on a trend. It's like having a crystal ball that informs which shades will be in demand for the upcoming season or which skincare ingredients will become the next consumer obsession.

TRANSFORMING RETAIL EXPERIENCES

AI's impact isn't limited to behind-the-scenes product development and trend forecasting. It's also transforming the way consumers interact with beauty brands. From virtual try-on apps that allow customers to experiment with makeup looks digitally to personalized skincare recommendations powered by AI-driven quizzes, technology is enhancing the customer experience, making it more interactive, personalized, and satisfying.

EMBRACING AI FOR A COMPETITIVE EDGE

As AI continues to evolve, the potential for its application in the cosmetics industry is limitless. Brands that are quick to adopt and integrate AI into their operations are finding themselves at a significant advantage, able to respond more rapidly to market changes, innovate at a faster pace, connect with consumers on a deeper level, and even reduce their carbon footprint with green AI.

Here’s your takeaway: The fusion of AI with the cosmetics industry is not just a passing trend but a transformative force. As we look to the future, the integration of creativity and technology holds the promise of a beauty industry that's not only more innovative and responsive but also more attuned to the desires and needs of consumers worldwide. The time to harness the power of AI in cosmetics is now, paving the way for a future where beauty and technology blend seamlessly for an enhanced beauty experience.

By The Numbers:

A year in review

Growth, growth and more growth. The cosmetics and beauty industry continues to show signs of strong growth in the 2023 year end results.

Mass Cosmetics Sales finished the year +5.1% at 134B, unit sales were down 1.3% and no surprise with inflationary pressure that we saw the average unit price was up 6.5$ to $5.56.

BODY CARE grew by 9.1% while average price grew by 11%

COSMETICS grew by 11.5% and average price grew by 10%

HAIR CARE grew by 8% while average price was up by 10%

The PRESTIGE beauty industry in Canada continues to grow at double digits. Dollar sales were up 16% to 2022 and it is the fastest growing industry in Canada as tracked by Circana.

Hair was up 23%, makeup was up 18%, skincare was up 15%, and fragrance was up 14%. Skincare contributed to 37% of the net dollar gains in 2023.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS FOR GROWTH IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY

• Newer, smaller regions and cities are bubbling up as growth drivers: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Atlantic are driving growth, with small cities now gaining in importance and outpacing major cities in terms of beauty spending.

• Canada has a unique pattern of shopping occasions, with early spring

promotional events driving growth during the first half (we saw this happen in 2023).

• Despite an increase in promotions, both promoted and non-promoted products increased in price, with premiumization happening (consumers trading up) in the fragrance and hair categories.

• While brick-and-mortar continues to drive up basket size, consumers are incorporating online shopping as part of their routine, leading to both channels growing at a similar rate.

Ask An Advisor:

Q&A with Jessica White

How did you get into the cosmetics industry and why did you make that choice?

I was introduced to Beauty events through a major retailer where I became involved at a young age as a fragrance demo representing Watier Premiere Neige. This also gave me an opportunity to connect with makeup artists, vendor representatives who tapped into my potential and taught me the basics of skin care and makeup application tips. I was selfmotivated and eager to learn, and being with people who had such a passion for their Brand inspired me to follow in their footsteps.

Looking back at when you started, how did you feel?

I was surrounded with people who believed I had great potential, and who were willing to teach me. Knowing that I had support, I felt confident to mingle with customers and develop relationships.

How comfortable we’re you in providing customers with advice on skincare and other beauty tips?

Cosmetics Magazine loves our beauty advisor community. In an effort for readers to get to know some of them better, for this issue, Jessica White from Shoppers Drug Mart in New Brunswick is in the spotlight. Her team won the 2023 Beauty’s Best award for best team in a drugstore, and she is an inspiring associate and leader, so we wanted to get to know her better.

I’m curious by nature, therefore I would take it upon myself to research, read and reach out to vendors for product information.

Did you take any training and if so, what was it? Looking back, was that training enough?

I was fortunate to have connections with a vendor whose representatives and make-up artists invested time in providing me with knowledge, beauty tips and methods of application, as well as selling skills to build loyalty to the brand.

IN EVERY ISSUE |
16

What do you think would have made it easier for you when you first started?

At that time, I felt I had all the information I needed because I was supported by the Watier team who inspired me to be creative with makeup.

What are your career aspirations? Where do you see yourself over the next 5 years?

I’m passionate about the industry, and I’m committed to continuously developing skills and knowledge in this area. My long-term aspirations are to land a position where I can take on a senior leadership role where I can make a positive impact and possibly influence a new generation.

What are your greatest strengths?

I lead with vision, strategy, aim to execute and land success in all our team’s endeavours.

What would your team members say about you? The good, the bad and perhaps the ugly.

They would say I uphold high standards, having great relationships with our vendors and am passionate about what we can do as a team.

Your team won a Beauty’s Best award last year. What does that win mean to you?

It makes me very proud of our accomplishments as a team, it gives us validation and a sense of pride. Its a true illustration of what a team can achieve when we collaborate towards the same goal.

This industry sees a lot of turnovers at the retail level. What are your thoughts on how to keep associates motivated and stick with it?

It might be a misconception that pay, and benefits are what matters most. However, providing opportunity to develop talent, promote teamwork, open communication and celebrating success seems to have a greater impact on the associate’s well-being and mental health.

What has been the biggest change in customers since you first started?

Customers are influenced by social media, there is also a blend of in-person engagement and technology that come into play.

What are you most proud of when you think about your role today and what has been your biggest accomplishment?

Proud to have been a mentor to a younger generation entering the workforce, also leading a team to be nominated, being finalist and/or winning former COSA/Beauty’s Best awards annually... adding to our wall of fame.

For someone who wants to enter this industry and work the retail floor, what words of encouragement would you share with them?

We need to inform our new recruits that cosmetics in retail entails much more than playing with makeup, its about creating customer and brand loyalty. If you are looking for a career where you love to engage with people and are self-motivated to continuously learn about products and application skills, you will love entering the industry as a beauty specialist.

Trend No. 1

Bare It All

As warmer weather approaches, it’s time to ditch heavy coverage in favour of glowy, radiant skin with minimal product. As seen on spring/ summer runways for Altuzarra, Stella McCartney, Balmain, Diesel, Richard Quinn, and Tory Burch, 2024’s version of the no-makeup makeup look is spring perfection.

“As a makeup artist, I always strive for beautiful, glowing skin,” says Torontobased celebrity makeup artist Sheri Stroh. “I really fell in love with the look after seeing Linda Evangelista on the street in New York. It looked as if she had just come from a facial, her skin was so glossy.”

Stroh says you can achieve this look with emollient skincare products such as serums, lotions and creams. If you use eye cream, look for a brightening formula with reflective pearls. Just avoid anything mattifying. If you do want to use makeup, Stroh suggests using coverage products more intentionally (diluted foundation, spot concealing, strategic use of powder). For a subtle glow, mix a liquid highlighter with your moisturizer, foundation or tinted moisturizer, and only apply it where you want some extra radiance. Address any areas with too much shine with a blurring balm that leaves a skin-like finish.

Band Aid Trend No. 2

Once again, the headband is back for spring, seen on runways for Molly Goddard, Helmut Lang and Prada, and on Camila Cabello, Jennifer Lawrence , Olivia Rodrigo and Ashley Park . But this time, designers and celebrities are trading in big feminine patterns and florals for muted tones and pared-back designs.

“Headbands are not going anywhere,” says Toronto-based celebrity hairstylist Cindy Duplantis, who also owns Duplantis Hair. “Adding a headband can elevate your style instantly without taking a lot of time and effort. And it’s an ageless look now.”

When choosing a style and material, consider your face shape to help determine which one will suit you best. If you have a more of a square-shaped face, go with something that has a knot on top to elongate. If you have an oval shape, use one of the larger ear-to-ear style headbands.

If headbands tend to slide off your head, use a dry shampoo or a texture spray to add grip around your hairline — something with less slip, says Duplantis. If you’re wearing a silk headband, you can help secure it more by sliding a bobby pin in the back.

ASTROGLIDE – THE PERFECT COMPLIMENT TO THE SEXUAL WELLNESS TREND

ASTROGLIDE’S FOUNDATION IN ROCKET SCIENCE

In 1977, a young rocket scientist working on the Space Shuttle Enterprise made a discovery that would intimately enhance the lives of millions around the globe.

While working at Edwards Air Force Base to improve the heat transfer in the cooling system of the shuttle orbiter, he discovered a solution that was watersoluble and non-toxic. It was also exceptionally slippery when hydrated. That’s when the inspiration struck.

The young scientist bottled up some of the solution and gifted it to a colleague as a birthday gag. When the birthday boy came back for a refill, he knew he had a product that would help people explore exciting new frontiers in pleasure and ASTROGLIDE was born.

That young scientist was ASTROGLIDE Inventor, Daniel X. Wray. Dan experimented with over three hundred different versions before settling on the perfect silky-smooth formula that we know and love today. The name gave a nod to Dan’s rocket science roots as well as the product’s smooth gliding texture.

Welcome to the Club

The co-founders of personal care brand Athena Club discuss their exciting new expansion into select Canadian retailers

The everything shower just elevated to a whole new level. Athena Club recently expanded its retail reach across Canada, with its body care collection now available in Walmart, Jean Coutu and Brunet stores nationwide. Here, co-founders and co-CEOs Charles and Maria Desmarais discuss the brand’s innovations in shave, body and wellness, ingredient transparency and what’s next.

What inspired you to launch Athena Club in 2018?

The “aha” moment came from a personal frustration with the lack of affordable, high-quality personal care products that didn’t compromise on ethics or ingredients. We noticed a gap in the market for products that were not only effective but also aligned with a more conscious lifestyle. Our products are designed with the consumer in mind, from easyto-use packaging that stands out on the shelf to ergonomically designed products that enhance the user experience.

Our entry into Walmart, Jean Coutu, and Brunet is not just about expanding our reach; it’s about introducing a more thoughtful, intentional approach to personal care to a wider audience. We believe that by focusing on innovation, quality, and the overall consumer experience, Athena Club will not only stand out but also set new standards in the hygiene sector in Canada.

How does Athena Club prioritize innovative technology in its shaving and skincare products?

Innovation is at the core of everything we do, from our razor design to our skincare formulations. Our R&D team is constantly exploring new materials, formulations, and designs to create solutions that address real customer needs while enhancing their daily routines.

Beyond individual product features, our aim is to transform the entire personal care routine into an elevated experience.

Why is it important to prioritize transparency around ingredients and sustainability?

Transparency and sustainability are non-negotiable for us. We believe our customers have the right to know exactly what’s in their products and how they’re made. That’s why we’re committed to using only the highest quality ingredients and sharing detailed information about our sourcing and production processes. This approach is fundamental to building trust and ensuring we’re not just a part of the conversation around sustainability but actively contributing to a more sustainable future.

We invest in premium ingredients to formulate our products, ensuring they deliver on their promises without compromising on safety or efficacy. Our formulations are crafted to cater to a wide range of skin types and concerns, offering personalized care solutions that stand out for their quality and performance. All our products are cruelty-free and vegan, and do not contain gluten, lactose, nor ingredients like parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.

What’s next for the brand?

Athena Club is actively expanding its body care line to elevate shaving and body routines with innovative solutions. Our focus is on delivering a comprehensive range of products that address the full spectrum of personal care needs. From advanced formulations to luxurious scents, each upcoming release is crafted to enhance daily rituals with Athena Club’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and user experience. This expansion underscores our dedication to providing customers with everything they need for a complete and indulgent body care routine.

We plan to broaden our product lines, expand to new markets, and nurture a community of informed consumers who seek more from their chosen brands. Our ultimate aim is to not only expand as a business but also to set a benchmark in fostering a personal care industry that prioritizes sustainability, transparency, and customer-centricity, thereby enhancing and enriching our customers’ daily routines.

How do you look so refreshed at 6 a.m. every morning?

Waking up refreshed has a lot to do with how I went to bed the night before. With this new job, I take sleep very seriously. In the morning, I like to hydrate from the inside out, so I start with water and electrolytes. Then I use my favourite Tata Harper cleanser and vitamin C serum, which is super important for a good glow, followed by a great moisturizer and SPF. On those mornings where I need a little extra boost, I’ll make coffee. Also, I have an incredible glam team who really help. I have so much respect for makeup artists and hair stylists — they bring a lot to my morning routine.

Getting Ready with

Meredith Shaw

The style expert, inclusivity advocate, and co-host of Citytv’s Breakfast Television shares her top tips for on-the-go beauty plus six of her fave products.

What’s your five-minute makeup routine?

As a strawberry blondie, I have love for my face with absolutely nothing on it. But for that polished, put-together look, mascara and eyebrow colour are key for defining my features. I also like a multitasking product that I can use on my eyes, cheeks and lips for a little glow up.

What spring 2024 trends are you looking forward to trying?

To me, spring trends always come back to a more fresh, natural, no-makeup makeup look, especially now with skincaremeets-makeup hybrids, like tinted serums.

What are some of your favourite Canadian brands?

I love all things Cheekbone Beauty! And The Care Principle. Dina [Pugliese, former Breakfast Television co-host] has a great makeup and skincare line, and I wear a lot of her products on the show. It’s all plant-based and natural, but the pigments are really strong. That’s such an exciting part of makeup right now: You used to have to sacrifice colour payoff for sustainability but not any more, and there are a lot of Canadian brands that are leading that category.

Gen Z+Acne Control

DERMATOLOGIST RECOMMENDED

The GEN Z cohort group is quite fussy. As followers of Tik Tok, they are easily influenced by what they see everyday on social media. This is no different when it comes to their skin and dealing with acne. Many of them believe acne is a sign of bad hygiene rather than a normal hormonal response from their body. And many of them are rushing to seek medical attention and advice on the right routine and the best products to use on their skin as part of their daily routine. One such brand that has been identified by dermatologists to be “best in class” is CeraVe. Developed in partnership with dermatologists, CeraVe has several products that combat acne and keep the skin maintaining moisture and looking fresh.

HYDRATING CLEANSER:

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser was developed with dermatologists to cleanse and refresh the skin without over-stripping it or leaving it feeling tight and dry. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a gentle face wash with ingredients like three essential Ceramides and Hyaluronic Acid, to help restore the skin’s barrier and retain hydration. It also includes the patented time-release MVE Delivery Technology for all-day hydration. This non-comedogenic face wash is an effective yet non-irritating way to start off any skincare regimen for normal to dry skin.

THIS FORMULA IS:

• Suitable for normal to dry skin

• Non-comedogenic, nonirritating and fragrance-free

• Developed with dermatologists.

THIS FORMULA CONTAINS:

• 3 Essential Ceramides: Essential for healthy skin, ceramides help restore and maintain the protective skin barrier.

• MVE Technology: This patented delivery system continually releases moisturizing ingredients for all-day hydration.

WHAT CERAVE USERS SAY:

The Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a great cleanser especially for those of us with dry and maturing skin. It gives an awesome clean feeling without stripping away all of your natural moisture and actually has hyaluronic acid in it to add moisture to the skin while cleansing. I’ve paid a whole lot more for cleansers in the past and after I tried this one, I no longer saw the need to spend more money on a cleanser. One pump cleanses the face and the neck, and the biggest bottle lasts forever with only one pump needed. It has no smell and is a gel to cream type texture. It doesn’t foam up. I highly recommend this product if you’re looking for a great cleanser. - sallyj19

Developed by dermatologists, CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser with 4% benzoyl peroxide helps clear acne pimples, prevent new breakouts, and allow skin to heal. This gentle yet effective acne cleanser, formulated with 3 essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide*, helps maintain the skin’s moisture barrier and retain skin’s natural moisture. This non-comedogenic, fragrance-free face wash instantly dissolves dirt and excess oil to cleanse the face, without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. Skin will feel softer, smoother, more clarified, and comfortable while reducing acne, without dryness or flaking.

CeraVe Acne Foaming Cleanser is recommended by the Acne and Rosacea Society of Canada.

THIS FORMULA IS:

• Gentle on skin

• Non-comedogenic and fragrance-free

• Soap-, paraben-, sulfate- and fragrance-free

WHAT CERAVE USERS SAY:

I suddenly developed acne out of nowhere, I’m 29 years old, never had much acne in my life and was struggling to find anything that helped. I was googling stuff one night and came across an ad for a free cerave sample and thought well it’s worth a try at this point. I kid you not, I used the product for 4-5 days and all the acne that I had was suddenly disappearing, and no new acne coming in, each day I woke up I couldn’t believe how good my skin was looking! I highly recommend this product, it’s worth every single dollar! – Kelsey

WHAT CERAVE USERS SAY:

I’m probably on my 5th or 6th bottle of this. Ever since I started using it, I got amazing results, and it didn’t break the bank. The older and busier I seem to get; I also seem to gravitate towards no-fuss packaging, so the pump has made it a lot easier to keep up with my skincare routine too! This product has balanced out my oily skin, soothed my sensitive skin, and made my complexion super bright after using it for a little over a year. I’ve also recommended it to all my friends and so many of them love it too! - Jankib

MANAGING Menopause

We turned to the experts for tips and advice on giving mature skin what it needs. Plus, eight innovative products to care for menopausal skin.

Now more than ever, the beauty industry is focused on authenticity and that’s slowly translating to how we talk about skincare during menopause. The language is shifting from a focus on anti-aging to embracing signs of age with love and grace.

“The beauty industry is serving a very smart, savvy, informed audience now,” says Shirley Weir, founder and CEO of Menopause Chicks, a health education platform dedicated to guiding women through perimenopause to menopause to post menopause with confidence.

“Consumers are being considered in research, ingredient selection, packaging and even showing up in ads, often untouched.” Weir has also noticed more and more beauty advisors showing up for women’s health education sessions and participating in the Menopause Chicks online learning opportunities, so they can better serve a large and important segment of their consumer demographic.

Lilith Schwertle, global training lead for Weleda AG, agrees that it’s an exciting time in the beauty industry for innovation in menopausal skincare. “Weleda’s approach is rooted in developing effective formulas from nature which support the skin’s renewal process, mimic the effect that natural collagen has on the skin, and strengthen the skin’s vitality,” she says. The European brand recently introduced two age performance collections with those experiencing menopausal skin in mind.

As with any other significant hormonal phase (hello, puberty!), menopause can be a wild ride. Along with mood changes, insomnia and hot flashes, menopause can lead to some drastic skin changes. Progesterone is the first hormone to fluctuate and decline in perimenopause, followed by estrogen, which goes for a steep decline postmenopause.

When estrogen levels rapidly decline, says Dr. Renita Ahluwalia, lead Dermatologist at the Canadian Dermatology Centre, skin loses its hydration capacity

and elasticity. Collagen production also decreases by about 30% in the first five years of menopause, which can lead to dry, thinner skin. Many women experience acne during perimenopause and menopause, too, along with redness and itchiness.

If you’re struggling with dry skin, Dr. Ahluwalia says to look for three different types of moisturizers: Humectants that draw water into the skin (often lightweight), emollients that fill the spaces in the skin, and occlusives (if you’re not experiencing acne) to really hydrate the skin. Retinol is also a tried-and-true ingredient when it comes to caring for menopausal skin, as it can help stimulate collagen production and target acne — just remember that it’s drying, so moisturizer and SPF are important.

Listen to your skin and when in doubt, says Dr. Ahluwalia, ask your family doctor to refer you to a dermatologist so they can help you create a strategy. “I like to take a full 360-degree approach, working with family doctors and other providers to make sure a patient is eating well, drinking enough water, sleeping well, taking the right supplements, etc.”

Ultimately, Weir says, “paying attention to skin health in perimenopause is a great way to keep tabs on how our body is evolving.” These changes are important signals from our body that it needs something, she says, and it’s best to investigate with your health team before trying to resolve them on your own. The best advice Weir can offer women is to learn about hormone health. “Get curious about the roles of progesterone and estrogen in particular when cycles are regular,” she says.

Schwertle says that women’s confidence can suffer terribly during menopause. “We can be extremely tough on ourselves.” At the same time, she says, menopause can be a time of discovery and growth, adding that “leading with kindness, self-care, compassion and love while navigating this time in one’s life can be very helpful.”

Our commitment to providing a comprehensive and personalized 360-degree support service ensures that each brand receives tailored marketing and commercial strategies, optimized for success across different geographical regions. We employ a differentiated go-to-market strategy with every retailer, adapting to the nuances of omnichannel distribution channels. This approach allows us to empower each brand to thrive on its own while contributing to the cohesive success of Prestilux.

4. Prestilux was founded in 1970, initially to distribute Christian Dior fragrances, in this ever-evolving landscape of the beauty industry, what is the secret to the company’s longevity?

I firmly believe that our success hinges on our deep understanding of the nuances within the industry, enabling us to tailor our strategies to align with the evolving needs and preferences of consumers. We have refined our capacity to flex our business model in response to the distinct requirements and maturity levels of each brand, thereby fostering their ongoing growth and resonance. Crucially, our enduring success is sustained by our core values and the unwavering dedication of our staff on the ground. Their embodiment of our ethos and tireless efforts

to advance our mission propel us forward, making our success not only achievable but also enduring. Without their commitment and hard work, none of this would be possible. Our actions are guided by our overarching vision: to become the premier Canadian ally for the world’s most beloved beauty brands. We are dedicated to championing these brands and bringing their exceptional products to consumers, solidifying our position as a trusted partner in the beauty industry.

5. One of the newest additions to your roster of brands is SVR Laboratoires, a French brand established in more than 45 countries. Can you tell us why is this brand relevant on the Canadian market?

SVR is such a promising brand! It’s relevance stems from several factors:

The first one pertains to the quality of the products, SVR is known for its dermatologically tested and scientifically proven formulations, at an accessible price. In addition, SVR offers a wide range of skincare products tailored to various skin types and concerns. This diversity allows the brand to effectively address skincare issues such as sensitive skin, acne, aging, and hydration. Overall, SVR’s reputation for quality and accessibility makes it a relevant and appealing addition, offering effective solutions backed by science. My personal favorite product range is Sensifine, which is formulated for reactive and sensitive skin such as mine. My personal picks are the Cleansing Balm for its incredible melting texture and the Restorative Night Oil, which soothes my skin beautifully. And the best part with this range is that the formulas are comprised of only 9 or 10 ingredients.

6. From Shiseido UK to Decléor and Prestilux, you have been in the beauty industry for over 20 years. From your experience and opinion, what is the one consistent element that has not changed over the years?

40 COSMETICSMAG.COM | SPRING 2024
EDITORIAL |

Great question! I’d say the concept of ‘love brand’ and the importance of beauty experts in the industry is something that’s remained consistent over the years. Despite the rise of online sales and digital transformation, the significance of trained cosmeticians and their ability to foster genuine relationships with consumers endures. They serve as true brand ambassadors, not only providing guidance and expertise but also nurturing trust and loyalty among our clientele. This human connection is especially vital in an industry that thrives on sensory experiences.

7. Many of our readers are beauty advisors working in stores across the country. How does Prestilux remain connected to the retail reality?

We owe this to our sales force who play a crucial role in stores across the country! With nearly 3000 points of sale scattered across the country, maintaining this connection is paramount to our success. Our team is comprised of many former beauty advisors both in the field and at our headquarters bringing firsthand knowledge and insights into the retail environment. We also maintain constant communication with our retail partners, fostering strong relationships and collaboration. Additionally, we engage in international travel to hone into best practices from retail establishments worldwide, ensuring we stay the forefront of industry trends and innovations. By remaining deeply connected to the retail landscape, we can better understand the needs and challenges faced by beauty advisors and retail partners, allowing us to provide tailored support and solutions to enhance their success.

8. What makes you proud as a company?

We take great pride in the fact that we not only uphold our values but also embody them in every aspect of our operations. As a growing company, we remain committed to maintaining our human approach. Our most cherished assets are the relationships we nurture. These include our

connections with brands – mainly headquartered in Europe, our long-term partnerships with Canadian retailers, and our collaboration with beauty advisors who serve as the direct link to consumers. These relationships form the cornerstone of our success and guide us in our journey forward. In addition, I’d say the independence, coming from being a family-owned business, gives us the freedom to prioritize what truly matters. I also must mention my fellow women leaders! We’re committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace so, as a woman, seeing all these other women in leadership positions at Prestilux makes my heart particularly proud.

9. What can we expect from Prestilux in the next years?

A Case of the MONDAYs

Jaimee Lupton, founder of Monday Haircare, on expanding into more Canadian mass retailers and innovative new launches.

When Monday Haircare launched in 2020 on the cusp of a global pandemic, New Zealand-based founder Jaimee Lupton wasn’t sure how it would perform. Then six months’ worth of stock sold out in six weeks. Today, the award-winning brand is available in stores around the world. Here, Lupton discusses the brand’s innovative new formulas and goals for the future.

What made you confident that Monday Haircare would stand out as a brand when you launched four years ago?

When we launched, there were plenty of exciting brands helping to democratize skincare. But when it came to haircare, there weren’t any premium, modern brands available in the same way. We saw a space for a product available in a mass setting that ticked all the boxes: cruelty-free, ingredients people are aware of, and something beautiful to show off in the shower. Alot of research went into what we were doing. When you walk down the haircare aisle, it’s so busy and overwhelming.

With Monday, what we did really well was choosing that beautiful millennial pink colour.

My background is in luxury communications and PR, so everything was very consciously done in terms of marketing and the way we positioned the product — partnering with Vogue and key tastemakers that normally do luxury brands. It gave the consumer a bit of a juxtaposition and they were a bit confused by the brand that was available for $10 but was marketed as a $100 product.

Today, we’re in 33 countries with over 50,000 retail stores across 100 retailers. We sell 65,000 bottles of Monday Haircare every day around the world. We’re accessible to over a billion people. That is a testament to our retail partners, because we do all our marketing like we’re a direct-toconsumer brand, but with the reach and scale of mass retailers. I think that’s our secret sauce.

What goes into Monday Haircare’s new product innovations?

We’re always staying ahead of beauty trends and bringing in what we can at an affordable price point. Being number one on TikTok means we have that constant two-way communication with consumers.

Our new Curl Define range contains peptides. The skinification of haircare is bringing in all these key active ingredients such as jojoba oil and hyaluronic acid. We recently added leave-in conditioners and dry shampoo to our lineup, and we’re always developing new products.

44 COSMETICSMAG.COM | SPRING 2024
EDITORIAL |

In terms of ingredients, our non-negotiables are sulfate- free, dermatologicallytested, paraben-free, SLS-free. Recyclable packaging is also really important to us. This is what consumers demand these days so we make sure that we listen. We also recently launched body wash in the US, and we are looking to bring that to Canada as well.

What other goals would you like to achieve in the industry?

Now that we’ve focused on the back end and built our own factory and a team of all stars, we can develop new brands. We have Osāna Naturals, a naturally-derived body care range, and Châlon Paris, luxuriously fragranced and beautifully packaged hand and body care. In June, we launched a haircare brand exclusively with Walmart US called Being, made for all hair types from 1A to 4C. The overall goal is to be a modern-day L’Oréal for gen Z and millennial consumers.

Innovation For Your Skin

ENERGY BASED TECHNOLOGY DEVICES

ENERGY BASED DEVICES – HAVE A PURPOSE

Today consumers are looking for more ways to improve their look, and particularly their skin. Aging, wrinkles, acne, and redness are all areas they want to treat, improve and they want to do it fast. And lucky for them, technology is available for them to get the help they desire.

Three of the devices, known as energy, based devices, which provide great results are offered by Canadian company Xcite Technology. Energy-based devices for medical aesthetic treatments utilize various forms of energy such as ultrasound, radiofrequency (RF), or mechanical energy to target specific tissues and achieve desired outcomes. For instance, Sofwave Ultrasound skin tightening employs ultrasound technology to deliver focused energy deep into the skin, stimulating collagen production and tightening loose or sagging skin. Sylfirm X RF microneedling combines radiofrequency energy with microneedling to improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and address scarring by stimulating collagen remodeling. JetPeel transdermal exfoliation and infusion utilize a high-pressure stream of air and customized serums to

exfoliate the skin and infuse it with nutrients, hydrating agents, and therapeutic serums, promoting skin rejuvenation and addressing various dermatological concerns effectively.

JETPEEL

The facial treatment Jennifer Aniston swears by to get her signature glowing complexion for award season! JetPeel technology delivers nutrients in a completely non-invasive Jetstream deep into the skin layers.

It provides lymphatic drainage, boosted hydration & plumpness and exfoliating of dull skin to take your facial treatment to a whole new level of celebrity worthy skin rejuvenation. JetPeel is clinically proven to provide instant, same day, visible results, which is why celebrity A-Listers LOVE JetPeel to get their skin looking gorgeous for the red carpet. SYLFIRM

Next-generation RF Microneedling device SYLFIRM X, latest generation RFMN device offers a wider variety of treatment indications than any previous RF Microneedling device to date.

46 COSMETICSMAG.COM | SPRING 2024 EDITORIAL |
X

Sylfirm X’s Dual Wave Technology offers both pulsed and continuous wave RF signals. The Pulsed Wave RF offers new treatment indications allowing you to treat a wider variety of conditions such as Melasma, Vascular Lesions, Pigmented Lesions, Diffuse Redness and Inflammatory Acne. It is the first and only pulsed wave device available in North America.

SOFWAVE

Sofwave technology and devices offer patients the next generation in ultrasound technology that achieves positive effects in just half the treatment time of other technologies.

Sofwave™ is clinically proven to regenerate

collagen, which reduces lines and wrinkles, and lifts the eyebrows and lax skin under the chin and neck area.

Patients will see beautiful results after one treatment, and they can return to their regular activities right away!

BENEFITS OUTWAY THE COSTS

If you can afford the cost and do not mind a bit of downtime that is required, the benefits of tech treatments are fantastic. Erin McLean, Vice President of Xcite Technology says “these devices contribute to overall skin health, no different that exercise can. The costs might be prohibitive for some clients but there are solutions that meet every budget.” Today clinics are willing to offer patients with financing options. This allows the technology to be accessible to everyone and every budget. Erin says that “clinics run promotions all the time giving more clients access through sales events.” Most clinics do offer free consultations and will work with patients on determining the right solution for their skin and wallet. “Think of it like finding a contractor when renovating” says Erin. “You want someone you hope you can trust that stays on budget.”

Dr. Caroll of Compass Dermatology in midtown Toronto is one of those clinics that uses the technology and Xcite devices. Dr. Caroll offers JetPeel and SylfirmX as some of the technologies to her patients.

Dr. Caroll says that these devices are “great additions and some of the largest growing treatments that are most requested. The devices are great for tightening, lifting and overall skin quality and are more comfortable for patients with minimal down time treatment”.

Comfort and minimal downtime are key wants from patients today. Compass Dermatology offers more than 15 devices at the clinic and the places where they add a device is where there is a void for what patients and clients ask for.

“JetPeel and SylfirmX are really comfortable for the results that a patient gets” says Dr Caroll, “little prickling too as patients would rather feel nothing. At our clinic, we like to under promise and over deliver”.

Today’s patients are busy, and these devices and technology allow them to go on with day-to-day activities s with minimal impact. Dr. Caroll suggests that “a JetPeel treatment is one we encourage you get before a big event as it will give you amazing skin instantly. This is also great for men who don’t necessarily use makeup to achieve that look”.

When asked about any side effects with either of these devices, Dr. Caroll indicated that she has never seen one. With SylfirmX, she did advise that “expected side effects like initial swelling, rough skin and that comes off within a week.” She added that SylfirmX is typically performed as a series of 3 visits and then once a year for maintenance.

“The great thing about SylfirmX is that it fits into everyone’s aging plan as it creates a tightened skin barrier and has low down time with proven results”.

Skin Barrier Bestie

Keep your skin hydrated this spring with the protective benefits of ectoin

By now, every dedicated skincare enthusiast knows the importance of looking after the skin barrier for a healthy complexion. That’s why ectoin has become such a buzzy ingredient. It’s a peptide that’s considered an extremolyte (extracted from extremophilic micro-organisms) and it works to protect cell function in extreme weather and environmental conditions. When used as part of a skincare routine, it has hydrating and protective benefits.

“Ectoin preserves and improves skin barrier function while fighting oxidative stress — both key components in skin health and aging,” says Toronto-based medical and cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Sonya Abdulla. Thanks to its small molecular size, ectoin can bind water and create a protective hydration complex around different cell types. Dr. Abdulla points out that there is even some evidence that ectoin can filter UV and visible light. “While it’s not a recognized sunscreen, it may have some benefit against these exposures.” Over time, the antioxidant benefits of ectoin may play a role in slowing the damage from oxidative stress in the aging process. That means visible improvement in skin texture and fine lines, and more radiant skin overall.

“Ectoin has been on our radar for quite some time,” says McKenzie Bolt, Biossance’s director of global education. “Because Ectoin excels at improving hydration and protecting skin from environmental stressors, we knew we wanted to incorporate it into some of our products.” Biossance harnessed the power of ectoin in its recently launched Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue, a restorative night cream that replenishes and regulates the moisture barrier to strengthen skin’s self- defense capabilities. “We have seen so many impressive clinical results from this ingredient, keep an eye out for it in future products,” Bolt says.

All skin types can benefit from ectoin since it’s typically very well-tolerated, says Dr. Abdulla (just exercise caution if you have inflammatory skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, and speak to your doctor for guidance if pregnant or breast feeding). It also plays well with other ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides and niacinamide. You can even use it to improve tolerability when using more irritating ingredients like retinol, AHAs, and BHAs.

Embracing Innovation In Facial Harmonization Techniques with Fillers

"Confidence breeds beauty" is a famous quote by Estée Lauder, an iconic American entrepreneur who founded a multinational cosmetics company. Dated back to the Egyptians, humans have been vastly interested in beauty and attractiveness for thousands of years. These two are closely related, but the latter is more fluent and will vary from personal experiences. In 2006, Basour et al. defined four major factors of facial attractiveness, which were facial symmetry, averageness, sexual dysmorphism (meaning looking more masculine or feminine), and youthfulness. Hence, many patients seek aesthetic treatments to improve one or many of these factors, which will boost confidence. Also, soft tissue fillers have a tremendous positive impact on patient's social and psychological health, as demonstrated in a study we published recently in a medical journal and presented at world congresses.

Though facial rejuvenation techniques have existed since the advent of cosmetic medicine, they are advancing rapidly and growing in demand in 2024, mainly due to the popularity of dermal fillers and newer products with different rheological properties that enable aesthetic practitioners to treat all areas of the face, and not one area in isolation, and importantly to give patients natural-looking results.

This article will delve into the world of facial harmonization through fillers.

WHAT IS FACIAL HARMONIZATION?

Facial harmonization is the process of enhancing the symmetry, ratios and appearance of the face. Facial contrast is also essential. Highlights and shadows of the face have to coexist for a dramatic effect.

The contrast ratio changes as we age and can be improved with fillers. As you can read, harmonization involves a holistic approach.

A boost of confidence comes from achieving facial harmonization, whether patients actively experience insecurities due to their facial features or not. To maximize outcomes, it is essential to look at the overall face, including the skin quality. Facial harmonization techniques are frequently non-surgical and can be done through different techniques, such as botox, lasers and chemical peels. However, the primary method used to improve symmetry and ratios of the face in 2024 is with dermal fillers.

Soft tissue fillers are injectable treatments explicitly used to contour, volumize, or sculpt specific face areas, allowing for better balance. These fillers can be injected beneath the skin and, as examples, may provide a lifting effect on the cheeks, be used to sculpt the chin and jawline, reduce the appearance of wrinkles and scars, and ultimately achieve a natural, younger, healthier-looking face. Developments in fillers have increased in popularity and use over the last couple of years, and soft tissue fillers are expected to continue to grow in the years to come. It is one of the most popular non-surgical treatments in the world.

WHAT’S NEW WITH DERMAL FILLERS?

For a long time in aesthetic and cosmetic medicine, the only options for facial harmonization were surgical. However, technological developments have brought more non-surgical options, including dermal fillers, to the market. Fillers changed the game when it came to facial harmonization techniques, allowing for a safer, less intrusive option with newer approved cosmetic indications.

The above image highlights all the facial areas where dermal fillers can be injected. Basically, most areas of the face can be injected to achieve the desired outcome. Great strides are consistently being made towards making fillers even more accessible and safe for use.

HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS

CANNULA TECHNIQUES

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the body, particularly in the skin, connective tissues, and joints. Being chemically identical to naturally occurring HA found in the skin, HA filler is a desirable option for non-surgical facial rejuvenation. These softtissue fillers are more commonly referred to simply as "natural fillers". Furthermore, HA fillers on the market will

Cannulas are blunt-tip needles, different from traditional sharp filler needles, used in specific areas to increase safety and decrease the chance of bruising and discomfort. This technique allows doctors to judge each area of injection better while avoiding nerves, veins, and arteries.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The science related to non-surgical facial aesthetics with soft tissue fillers has increased drastically over the past years. The technology and techniques have grown and improved, including the training processes becoming more defined where patients are experiencing reduced pain, bruising, and downtime after procedures.

Facial harmonization through dermal fillers is an area of cosmetic medicine that has grown dramatically in popularity over the past few years. With advancements in technology, formula changes, injection techniques and safety procedures, fillers will become even more famous through 2024. The more effective they become, the more patients can achieve that harmony that they are looking for, which is the ultimate goal for many practitioners.

L’INCONTOURNABLE — CLARINS SKIN SPA

NOMINATION FORMS & INSTRUCTIONS

Manager/Team Lead Award

Good Feel Better (LGFB), will be presented to an individual or group from the cosmetics and personal care products industry that are making a difference in their community. It could be someone who carves out time every week to make a difference locally in their city or town. Or a group coming together to solve a problem or provide support to a charity or community.

Beauty Tech Award

With so much innovation in technology today impacting the beauty industry, the time is right for this new award category. This award will be given to a company, brand, retailer, or agency partner who demonstrates the best innovative use of technology in beauty. The use of technology is not limited to any one thing but rather open to a product, process, device, tool, ingredient, web app, or even an in-store activation.

We heard the feedback from our beauty experts and are thrilled to announce this new award category. This award will be given to an individual who demonstrates excellence in their role as a manager or team lead. The individual can manage a team of one associate or a group of many. Nominations can come from the person who works for them, works with them, or manages them.
