us which products they most recommend to their customers — and why — in the “I Recommend” Beauty Awards. In these unique awards, the BAs are not prompted by branding or suggested products, and there are no parameters around their picks. They simply choose their winners in 31 categories and explain what makes each one a standout product. (You can read their actual comments in the package on page 27.) A big congratulations to all this year’s “I Recommend” Beauty Awards winners. Check them out, and if you haven’t used or recommended them, now would be a great time to give them a try! There’s nothing better than discovering a new fave cosmetic or secret skincare weapon from the beauty experts on the front line (page 27). As we shift gears into fall, life seems to get busier and we find ourselves more grateful than ever for those word-ofmouth recos and time-saving tips. (I’ve had a baby since the last issue so I’m taking all the quick beauty fixes I can get!) Whatever your fresh start, this issue is packed with products that deliver results so you can put your best face forward. From new releases to energize your look (page 15) to cool trends that give fall beauty a twist (page 24), we hope you find plenty of inspiration for the season ahead.

GRUNGE ROYALTY

Clockwise from top left: Hole’s Live Through This celebrates 25 years. Camo-print and floral reign surpreme on the R13 F/W 2019 runway. Frances Bean Cobain teases new music on her Instagram. Lacy slips and tights in acid colours dominate at Versace RTW F/W 2019 in Milan. Smudged black liner creates a woke-up-like-this feel on model backstage at Armani F/W 2019, and at Paco Rabanne, silky dresses get a grunge redux with touches of plaid.

@VERSACE

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS SINCE Kurt Cobain’s passing and the release of Hole’s chart-topper Live Though This, fashion is revisiting its obsession with grunge’s OG power couple. Strapped in combat boots and draped in plaid, camo and floral patterns, models at R13 were dressed to reenact the meetcute between queen of grunge Courtney Love and the late rocker. At Versace, a Nirvana soundtrack accompanied the models as they walked in Love’s signature camisole and lacy thigh-highs topped with furry, leopard-print coats and moto jackets. With a more opulent, baroque feel, Paco Rabanne cited Love and Queen Elizabeth as inspiration and sent silky slip dresses over plaid down the runway topped with tiaras. Smudged black eyeliner created a sleptin-your-makeup feel at Giorgio Armani and Givenchy, and unkempt mid-length bobs at both Helmut Lang and Longchamp also mirrored the rockers’ IDGAF attitudes. With ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl performing with his daughter Violet at Sziget music festival last month (she was clad in a Nirvana tee, naturally) and Love and Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, blowing up Instagram with musical sound bites, the succession ceremony sounds good from here. — Heather Marrin

perfect “Instagram eye” with its intimidating smoke, immaculately placed sparkle and razor sharp liner is given a high-fashion makeunder that is far more accessible to the modern woman. Cividini gives an avant-garde flair to this scrollable trend with washes of smoky warm shadows and an easy streak of golden sparkles down the centre of the lid. On the subtler side of shine, LaQuan Smith features lash lines smouldering with tones of espresso, finished off with a shimmering champagne overlay blended up into the crease. Makeup artist Diane Kendal created her own rendition of this statement eye for Tom Ford’s 2019 Fall collection. She says the key “is having a good base, such as a grease paint or a beautiful brown eye pencil for the powder shadow to adhere to.” After these layers, smudge a kajal liner in the waterline with a small brush as this “enhances the shape and colour of all eye types.” Kendal’s secret for adding shine is gloss. “Applying just a touch adds dimension and brilliance to the eye creating a dynamic openeyed effect.” Cheers to the season of shine! — Moriah Campbell

Clockwise from top left: Free-flowing locks complement sleek centre parts at the F/W 2019 Adeam runway show. A classic barrel curl accompanies Kate Spade’s F/W seventies-esque collection, and frizz amplifies grungy, disco styles at Michael Kors F/W 2019.

@MICHAELKORS

F/W 2019 runways with a combination of Ali McGrawinspired middle parts and Jerry Hall-esque curls that has us reaching for our tail combs and curling irons. A flat, hippie look this is not: Michael Kors made brushed-out braids sleek by adding a strong centre part and bold shades, while Kate Spade gave a modern Farrah Fawcett vibe to the centre part with voluminous, defined curls from root to tip. In his interpretation of the groovy do, Laurent Philippon, the stylist for Adeam’s Fall 2019 collection, says “starting with a rattail comb is imperative for drawing a very straight centre part.” Then add righteous volume by “prepping the hair with thickening spray all over and drying quickly with a hairdryer.” To create that care-free natural ’70s wave, Philippon suggests taking large sections with a oneinch curling iron and alternating half a loop clockwise and half a loop counter-clockwise all the way down the hair shaft. For fluff and finish, “energetically brush and apply a dry oil spray.” Peace, love and big sleek hair. — Moriah Campbell

WELCOME LYNDA ROSE, LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER® CHAIR

Lynda Rose has been a Look Good Feel Better supporter since its inception. A veteran of the cosmetics industry, she attended the first-ever Mirror Ball – the charity’s annual fundraising gala – then called the Crystal Ball - in 1991. “I remember being incredibly proud that, as an industry, we were supporting women facing cancer in such a unique way,” Lynda says. As the first woman to ever act as General Manager of Mary Kay Cosmetics in Canada, Lynda is very proud to be the first woman Chair of Look Good Feel Better. “LGFB has had a history of very strong leadership and I am fortunate to take the helm from past-Chair John Coyne, who has led the organization through a period of remarkable transformation with true conviction and commitment.” Lynda is looking forward to working with the Board to continue to ensure the on-going success of LGFB. She is also excited to be leading the organization into its next phase of building capacity to increase the impact for even more women facing cancer.

LYNDA ROSE LGFB has a special place in Lynda’s heart as one of Mary Kay’s top sales directors, Sharon Coburn, was part of the original team who brought Look Good Feel Better to Canada. Today, Mary Kay Sales Representatives make up 50% of the LGFB volunteer team, demonstrating the unwavering support of LGFB that runs in the organization’s culture. In everything she does from business to family to volunteering, leaving a legacy is key for Lynda. “LGFB is in my heart and soul. We are empowering women with greater information to help them feel like themselves again, " she says, "We started this more than 25 years ago as an industry and we must continue. It’s a responsibility that we all share. Together, we are changing lives for women with cancer."

Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to helping women and teens manage the appearance-related effects of cancer and its treatment. The complimentary workshop provides tools and techniques on skin care, loss of brows and lashes, wigs and scarves, and make-up hygiene. ASK A COSA WINNER

Q: What are customers’ key concerns for fall?

COSA WINNER

Emily Brown Cosmetics Manager, Shoppers Drug Mart, Halifax

ST. TROPEZ Gradual Tan Everyday Tinted Body Lotion, $40, at Shoppers Drug Mart and Sephora.ca.

LAURA MERCIER Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Femme, $34, at Hudson’s Bay.

A: TOPPING UP TANS In the fall, I find customers ask the most about how to prolong their summer tans and what they can do to maintain them. The best types of products to help customers with this concern are any of the St. Tropez self tannerproducts because they give you a natural-looking tan. Especially useful are products that build a gradual tan, which add a gentle hint of colour with each application on top of the customer’s natural tone. There’s one product called Gradual Tan Everyday Tinted Body Lotion and I love showing customers because it gives you glowing skin just like Jennifer Lopez’s. It’s a great product to keep the skin glowing like it’s still the middle of summer! INSTANT REFRESH I also find one thing customers will ask a lot about in the fall is a simple lipstick change. It’s an easy way to refresh their makeup routines that doesn’t require a lot of effort or cost. It’s especially

handy because most customers tend to get busier in the fall as things start to pick up again, so minimal effort is key! Since it’s after summer, most people are a little darker, so going with a deep red or burgundy gives them a very refreshed fall look while staying on trend with the autumn theme. It’s also a good time to play with richer textures like mattes or creams because lip colour naturally has more staying power in cooler temperatures. AH FALL, — THE RETURN OF SWEATER WEATHER, pumpkin spice and stress-induced breakouts. Take on your acne woes with the potent power of witch hazel. The herb is a known home remedy that’s been used for centuries to treat irritated skin. Right now, it’s seeing a resurgence in the form of toners and other skincare solutions thanks to its potent astringent properties. Witch hazel is a liquid extract that comes from the leaves and bark of a flowering shrub, Hamamelis virginiana, that’s native to North America. Rich with tannins and polyphenols, it has proven anti-inflammatory effects. “Witch hazel can reduce redness, itch, scaling and dry skin. It’s ideal for treating conditions like eczema, acne and rosacea,” says Dr. Valerie Yanofsky, a dermatologist at the Toronto Dermatology Centre. It’s also non-irritating, which makes it a great natural option for sensitive skin. Ole Henriksen, founder of his

eponymous skincare line, harnessed the powers of witch hazel for his global bestseller Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner, released late last year. “During my many decades treating skin, I’ve incorporated witch hazel into many formulations because of its medicinal properties,” says Henriksen. “It’s incredibly effective in reducing redness in sensitive skin and inflammation caused by acne.” Henriksen loves that witch hazel is beneficial for all skin types and concerns; he plans to continue to use it as his brand develops future products. While witch hazel is generally safe for daily use, Dr. Yanofksy says, it’s important to pay attention to any other ingredients used in products and proceed with caution. The herb is often formulated with alcohol, beeswax, fragrances and natural oils. “Start low and increase as tolerated so that you don’t risk overdoing it and irritating your skin,” she says. Used properly, it’s quite the bewitching ingredient.

MAGIC MAK EUP The Look: Psychedelic Sunday Why We Love It: Makeup all the way up into the hairline brings so much depth to this look, and the silver-white contacts are chillingly beautiful.

Vancouver-based makeup artist Mimi Choi caused a stir when she created Ezra Miller’s show-stopping look at the Met Gala in May, and her skills brought her to headline this year at BeautyCon festival. Using the body as a canvas, she paints everything from landscapes to illusions, making magic with makeup. Halloween inspo starts here! By Stephanie Hicks

The Look: All Hands on Deck Why We Love It: You gotta hand it to her — the intricacy of Choi’s work has us second-guessing which ones are real and which ones are painted on.

The Look: I Spy Why We Love It: We’re not sure if we’re more floored by the flawless makeup or the patch appearing peeled from the eye. Mesmerizing.

The Look: Broken Glass Why We Love It: At first glance, you can’t tell where the real eyes and lips begin and the painted ones start. Her precision is impeccable and this look shatters reality. The Look: Eyes on You Why We Love It: Delicate details and shading made this illusion look so real we couldn’t stop staring. (All eyes really were on Ezra Miller.) 57
