CELEBR ATING CANADIAN BEAUT Y
Photos: David Hawes (Hicks), Max Abadian (Laws).
OVER 350 INDUSTRY RETAILERS, vendors
and beauty enthusiasts gathered on May 2 in Montreal to celebrate this year’s winners of the second annual Canadian Beauty Awards. The evening was topped off with a heartfelt speech from our Lifetime Achievement winner Patricia Clare, national trainer for NeoStrata, about the importance of mentors and how they shape our futures and outlook on life. The winners this year will enjoy the most post-event media coverage ever: a full-page ad in the Globe & Mail, a double-page spread in Fashion magazine, screening on Rouge media’s network across Canada, on Cityline and in the 45-page winners’ section in this issue. In all, the winning products will have the potential to reach over 85 million people in the two months following the event. So congratulations again to all our finalists and this year’s winners. You are the best of the best!

SUMMER IS WELL AND TRULY ON THE WAY and
we’re kicking it off by celebrating our Canadian Beauty Award winners on page 31. The Montreal event was a buzzing affair and we hope that you can feel some of the energy surrounding all the winners from our summaries on each of these fantastic products. This issue’s packed with seasonal must-haves, too, with new luxurious suncare and luminous skin fixes. We turned to exceptional industry insiders with a passion for dance — Donté Colley, Jason Lee and Jennifer Brodeur — to hear some creative ways to keep cool. And our trends are also geared towards chilling out: What could be fresher than freckles (page 22) or wet-look hair (page 24) and pastel/neon tie-dye everything (page 12)? We hope you find all you need to enjoy those easy, breezy, balmy days ahead…

Live and Let TIE-DYE The rebellious print shows a softer side yet still makes a statement IT’S BEEN 50 YEARS since Janis Joplin rocked her iconic tie-dye jumper at Woodstock, making the print a symbol of peaceful protest. Since then, it has mostly been favoured by surfers, concert-goers and Justin Bieber. (And rendered as a crewneck only suitable for summer camp.) Until now. Defying the traditional anything-goes colour combos, which are often too loud for everyday wear, the latest tie-dye wave has a softer voice, and tastemakers are dip-dyeing more than just T-shirts. Tie-dye received a muted makeover at S/S 2019 presentations, making it surprisingly nine-to-five appropriate. At Proenzer Schouler, collared button-downs were awash with the print in opaque hues, and at Ganni the abstract pattern lent itself to everything from vests to pants in varying pale colour combinations. Beyond fashion fabrics, at Collina Strada’s A/W 2019 presentation, Shiseido global makeup artist Takeda Rena covered eyes with a multitude of pastel-neon hues, and online nail techs have been lighting up Instagram with their take on the trend using various colour-dragging techniques to create rainbow swirls. Why now? Florence Allday, a beauty and fashion research analyst for Euromonitor suggests the peaceful print is back to accompany a revived spirit of protest and as WSGN catwalks director Lizzy Bowring recently quipped to Business Insider, “We can’t keep wearing black to make a message.” — Heather Marrin 1. This lightweight 100 per cent mineral filter formula does double duty offering sun protection and makeup in one. With a subtle tint, it’s a lightweight, nongreasy texture that can be worn alone and will deliver protection for your skin as well as a hit of antioxidants.
Perfect for sensitive skin thanks to Avène’s soothing thermal water, this pocket-sized sunscreen not only protects skin from UVB and UVA, but it also fends off the damage pollution and blue light can cause. Bonus: It goes on like oil-free foundation.
This brand is synonymous with sunscreen, but for the first time ever, it’s making the switch to mineral. The new formula is hypoallergenic and made with 100 per cent zinc oxide. It’s also water resistant for up to 80 minutes and free from fragrance, parabens, phthalates and dyes.
This unique formula contains a “biomimetic hexapeptide,” which features specific amino acids to activate melanin production in the skin and help it build up its own defences. Meanwhile, vitamin E and an anti-inflammatory acid blend boost the skin’s repair process when it’s exposed to the sun.
Made right here in Canada, this sunscreen stick is super portable and ideal for those spots that are extra susceptible to sunburn, like your nose and ears. It’s formulated with 95.7 per cent certified organic ingredients and vitamins D and E to repair while it protects.

Trend Nº 1 THE “FAUX FRECKLE” walked
Photos: Instagram.
Clockwise from top left: Kylie Jenner caused a stir last summer when she revealed her freckles in a selfie. At Ryan Lo S/S 2019, enhanced freckles add a childlike twist to red lips and tight-lined eyes. Less is more at Preen S/S 2019, as subtle dots give life to a strikingly neutral canvas.

FAUX FRECKLES @RYANLOSTUDIO
down the runways of Sacai and Preen this season, where models’ cheeks and noses were uniformly decorated with dots after Meghan Markle ignited a global wave of freckle envy last year. Soon makeup-obsessed stars like Demi Lovato and Kylie Jenner began posting natural selfies of their youthfully dotted skin, making a statement out of innocence that we’re still striving to replicate, whether by letting our own freckles shine, or by adding a few extras. Editorial makeup artist Susie Sobol says for faux freckles that don’t look fake, first set the skin “with a clear powder so the surface area isn’t too slick or shiny.” Next, use two different shades of an eyebrow ink pen and begin dotting both colours randomly across the nose and cheeks. For freckles that will fool even your closest friends, “press the dots with your ring finger to make them appear less perfect.” Now to make sure you weren’t trigger happy, Sobol suggests taking a step back and using a micellar water and cotton swab to remove any dots that look fake or overdone. — Moriah Campbell

The New Wet Look
Photos: Instagram.
Clockwise from top left: “Models or mermaids?” we ask as locks are forever wet at the S/S 2019 Markus Lupfer runway show. Following the Oscars, Miley Cyrus rocks wet beachy curls at the 2019 Vanity Fair afterparty, and at Chloé S/S 2019, hair is piecey, greasy and pushed back.

Aquaman this summer with a sleek, ever-wet look that rivals the famous watery tousled mane of Jason Momoa. The wet look has been through a multitude of incarnations, from Cobain’s greased roots in the ’90s to Miley Cyrus’s 2019 straight-outof-the-shower look. This season Chloé and Altuzarra give their takes on the trend with a slightly damp, pushed back cool-girl aesthetic. Tina Outen, hairstylist for the Markus Lupfer S/S2019 collection, says their interpretation of “wet” was inspired by the water-kissed locks of a mermaid fresh from the ocean. “Start with a centre part in damp hair,” says Outen. “Then apply waving cream heavily through the roots to the crown and comb it in very flat to the head.” Wrapping with a scarf will hold it in place while you work on the ends. For that mermaid wave, Outen says to coat your palms with a creamgel and “squash the gel into the hair without running your hands though it.” To finish, diffuse dry the hair without touching it to create texture with a lasting wet definition. — Moriah Campbell

Just DANCE F E AT U R E
No one makes getting hot and sweaty look as good as a dancer can. Three beauty pros who like to shake it dish on keeping cool on and off the dance floor
By Caitlin Ag new
NAME:
Jason Lee
The owner of the eponymous salon in Toronto, this hairstylist is a lifelong dancer who takes 10 jazz funk classes a week at the Underground Dance Centre. WHO HE IS:
my mom put me in ballet, but I hated it because I was the only boy. I continued dancing to Madonna in my room and had these dreams to dance for her. Around 2000, I actually auditioned for Madonna in New York City. It was crazy! I got a call back, which was a lot of fun, but sadly it wasn’t meant to be. I was already doing hairdressing at the time, but I kept taking dance classes. When Madonna opened her gym in Toronto in 2014, she held auditions to dance with her in her promo video and I got in. For me, it was the highest moment of my life. Part of being a dancer is embracing being a sweaty mess. I try to avoid really strong products because when you sweat, that stuff is going to come down into your face. My hair is a big part of my confidence when I’m dancing, I think they coined it ‘hairography.’ I usually wear my hair down in class. It adds an extra layer of coolness to the whole thing.”

CRUNCH CRUSHER “For people who have curly hair, I always recommend cream products because they’re not as harsh and crunchy. For dance, you want something that’s softer so you can get a little bit of movement.” Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream, $39, at Moroccanoil.com.

Jennifer Brodeur
Known as JB Skin Guru to her A-list clients, with a roster that includes Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, Montreal-based skin strategist Jennifer Brodeur has ballet in her blood: Her mother was a dancer for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. WHO SHE IS:
“WE ACTUALLY HAD A BALLET STUDIO IN OUR HOME. It was a
regular thing for us to be down there working on pliés, and it was beautiful to have growing up because of the discipline around ballet. When you see dancers move on stage, the grace they exude makes you think it’s
easy. Even with what I do in skincare, dance is important because it’s about embracing and accepting the body and what you’re giving off to the world. Losing yourself in dance with music and movement — even if you’re really bad at it, it doesn’t matter — it really helps release emotions. And sometimes when we don’t release those emotions, we see eczema, rosacea and acne and all these different skin elements that are attributed to a lot of stress. If you are a dancer and you’re doing a show, most of the time there will be makeup on the skin. When you’re hot, it’s very hard to control because the sweat that’s on the skin will be filled with bacteria, pollution, all those environmental disturbances, plus the makeup. That can cause breakouts.”

STAY COOL “As dancers work out they sweat, and as sweat evaporates, it cools the surface of the skin, but dries it out, too. Having a cold air humidifier ensures proper hydration as a dancer sleeps.” Dyson Humidifier, $600, at Dysoncanada.ca.
KEEP IT CLEAN “People think they’ve got really clean skin, but you’d be surprised, especially if you’re adding glitter or sunscreen. It’s just a hot mess. If you’ve been dancing, you’ve got to get that makeup off right. And that’s right away, not an hour later.” Clarisonic Mia Prima Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush, $129, at Clarisonic.ca.

NAME:
Donté Colley
Donté Colley is a Toronto-based creator beloved for his inspirational Instagram videos that mix dance with uplifting graphics, an art form that has caught the eyes of some 700,000 followers and Glossier, which cast him in the first campaign for Glossier Play. WHO HE IS:
BREAKOUT BUSTER “Dermalogica has kept my acne-prone skin calm and made me feel good in my skin. If I do have a breakout, I put this on and when I wake up it will be almost completely gone.” Dermalogica Breakout Control, $68, at Dermalogica.ca.
“I’VE BEEN DANCING SINCE I COULD STAND ON TWO FEET. I
started making these videos in 2015 after high school. I wanted to dance more and have fun with my Instagram. Dancing for me is where I feel most confident. I get a little bit shy when I’m introduced to different kinds of people, and dance is a conversation I can have that people sort of relate to. It’s a very appreciative sharing of space. When I am dancing or taking a class, I’m always getting warm, but that’s okay. Even when I’m not dancing, I consistently overheat. I could literally be standing still and overheat! But it is a release when I’m doing what I love to do. I know that my body is working and it’s pumping and there’s a consistent flow of energy that’s going around to each part of my body, which in the end is just a great feeling.”
SUMMER 2019 | COSMETICSMAG.COM
GLITTER GUY “When I was on set [filming Glossier promotional videos], I was playing with glitter and wearing a lot of lip gloss, which to me was different but spoke to my personality of having fun.” Glossier Play Glitter Gelée, $17, at Glossier.com.
SIZZLING SCENT “I love mixing something sweet with something a little bit musky so it kind of balances out.” Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club, $158, at Sephora.

2019 C A NA DIAN BEAUT Y AWARD S
The Breakdown It takes 14 experts three months to judge the Canadian Beauty Awards in a three-step process
1. OVERVIEW OF FINALISTS First, the panel of judges meets downtown in Toronto to review the nominees, taking the five elements (right) into account. Meanwhile, a voting ballot featuring the finalists is sent to the Cosmetics magazine beauty advisory board, which is made up of over 1,000 beauty experts, and to over 140 industry insiders across Canada, in online surveys. 2. VOTES CAST The judges meet a second time to review the finalists and cast their votes in each category. 3. CONSUMERS WEIGH IN Finally, consumers are invited to have their say. Fragrance and beauty fans, including the readers of Cosmetics magazine and members of the TopBox sampling group, vote online for their favourite skincare, makeup and men’s and women’s fragrances. This year we received over 10,000 votes. These are tallied and the winners of the four consumers’ choice categories emerge.

Patricia Clare, NeoStrata
PATRICIA CLARE was born in
Coquitlam, B.C., and grew up in a
house full of love, faith and rescued animals. She fell in love for the first time in Grade 6. His name was Black Jack and he was a beautiful horse. He was the best gift she ever received and not just because he scored her her first teaching job — at Burnaby Horseman’s Association. Clare discovered early that people respond to different types of instruction: Some students needed visuals and some needed stories, others needed her to sit in the saddle with them and hold the reins. She loved teaching and its different methods. She also learned a lot from her parents. Her father was a provincial court judge and her mother worked in cosmetics. “I appreciated my father’s beautiful skills as an orator and the high value of the pregnant pause and my mother’s understanding that all things 66
beautiful should be enjoyed daily and never saved for the ‘perfect’ occasion,” she says of her two life mentors. Our winner’s first makeup job was at Suki’s Hair Salon in Vancouver in the early ’80s. Clare says she felt at home the moment she walked in the door. Photo shoots, movies, music blaring and mohawks became a daily delight. She enjoyed the teaching part of consulting and entered into the world of Estée Lauder where she learned the ropes of the business and was inspired by the trainers. In the early ’90s, while in her third year at university working on a teaching degree, Clare got her first shot as a regional training manager with Cosmair for Vichy. In 1995, her life changed forever when a small brand called NeoStrata arrived in Canada seeking a national training manager who could make science sound simple. It was a match made in heaven and 24 years later, she still enjoys this partnership. As her career
Carmen Tal Moroccanoil
bloomed with NeoStrata she received industry recognition via awards (she won a Cosmetics Outstanding Service Award for training) and as a sought-after keynote speaker. Each year she hosts over 50 educational seminars, training over 5,000 BAs. In her personal life, Clare married and enjoyed many years of entertaining, gardening, boating and family. Though she lost her husband suddenly a few years ago, she focuses on the two great gifts he left her with: the knowledge that she was enough and being step mom to her son, Neal. “Happiness hides in the tiniest of places,” says Clare. “We continue to discover the joy in each day and love floods our lives with hopes of new tomorrows.” To be honoured with such family and friends and have a job you get excited to go to after 24 years is a lifetime achievement of its own, she says. “This award means more than anyone will ever know. Beautiful things find you when you are not looking.”

C or p s à Cœ u r LES BEAUX JOURS NOUS FONT DE L’ŒIL. Alors, bye bye man-

ASK A COSA WINNER
Q:
What are your customers’ main concerns in summer and how do you handle them?
COSA WINNER
Emily Brown Cosmetics Manager, Shoppers Drug Mart, Halifax
A: SELF-TANNING TRAUMA One of the biggest challenges BAs face during this season is teaching customers how to properly apply their self tanner, making sure they follow the steps to prevent a self-tanner-gone-wrong experience. BAs also face the challenge of helping customers who have already used a self tanner off the mass wall without consulting a BA and are completely orange or uneven. Damage control for a self tanner can be hard for a BA because many brands don’t carry a self tanner removal product and several self tanners are meant to last days! One fix is to tell the customer to use a body scrub and oil-based products in the shower, paying special attention to dry areas like ankles, elbows and knees, which can be more porous and absorb more product. SUN PROTECTION Another challenge BAs face is to properly educate customers on sun protection and to make sure they are not only picking up the right sunscreen for their skin type (matte oil-free options for

acne-prone complexions, and light mineral-based tinted lotions for sensitive skin types, for example) but that they are applying the product enough throughout the day. BAs also have to be on duty for the customers who come in with a sunburn and need longterm and instant relief for their burns. This can be tricky because if the sunburn is really bad the customer may need to see a doctor, but aftersun can give them some relief until they can see their GP. It also gives BAs the opportunity to talk to the customer about the importance of protecting skin against UVA and UVB rays. Emily Brown is the cosmetics manager at Shoppers Drug Mart, Halifax, and the winner of 2018’s Cosmetics Outstanding Service Award for Best Service in a Drugstore, Retailer Nominated.

GOING GREEN The legalization of cannabis consumption has sparked interest from the beauty industry, but do the new offerings live up to the buzz?
By Kristin Keane

While it’s not Health Canada approved for cosmetic use yet, cannabis — and its close relative hemp — are seeing renewed enthusiasm on the beauty scene. Cannabis sativa seed oil, or hemp oil, has become more prevalent in Canadian ingredient lists and hemp-based CBD oil is appearing in skincare south of the border.
THE BODY SHOP debuted its line of hemp products in 1998, but since the legalization of cannabis in Canada last year, the ingredient has once again become the subject of attention for a lot of hopeful beauty entrepreneurs. Hemp is a strain of the cannabis sativa plant and contains 0.3 per cent or less THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, which has psychoactive effects). It also contains trace amounts of cannabidiol (CBD), which is causing excitement as a potential skincare superhero thanks to its suspected calming and anti-inflammatory properties. (Because its use in cosmetics products is restricted, research on its effects is limited.) Still, it’s a super trendy ingredient — even this year’s Oscars swag bags contained a $325 Bain Noir Cannabis Sativa Bath Soak Treatment from Montreal luxury beauty company Nannette de Gaspé. But until the law changes and cannabis is approved for use in skincare, products containing hemp are only allowed to include 10 micrograms of THC per gram and trace elements of naturally occurring CBD. Despite this, the
cosmetics industry now sees cannabis in a whole new light, and thanks to the hype, its already-legal cousin hemp is also making a reappearance. “Hemp oil has a unique balance of omega 6 and 3 fatty acids,” says Vancouver-based dermatologist Dr. Shannon Humphrey. Hemp oil is a great natural alternative to traditional moisturizers, she says, and may be anti-inflammatory. Some smaller studies have found it’s an effective treatment for the dryness and itching that come with eczema. But while Canadian brands are waiting for the green light to include CBD in their skincare lines, a slew of American companies are already producing hemp-based CBD-infused products. Herb Essntls, a New York-based skincare brand that uses cannabis sativa seed oil in its products, just launched its first ingestible CBD Elixir. The company is developing more new products with both CBD and cannabis sativa seed oil, which “has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, and is also rich in antioxidants (especially vitamin E) that provide anti-aging effects,” says Ulrika Karlberg, co-founder of Herb Essntls. Dr. Humphrey points out that research is still needed to provide scientific evidence for the benefits of CBD in skincare, but in the meantime, dry and sensitive skin can reap the soothing effects of hemp oil’s fatty acids, and it can be used as frequently as your skin requires.
