Pedro the Penguin Kids Yoga Class Plan This story is all about having a CAN DO attitude and FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS. We meet a brilliant penguin called Pedro who is DETERMINED to fly. He doesn’t know that penguins are flightless birds, so he keeps going until he makes his dream come true. It’s wonderful to dream big and we hope to inspire kids to do that too. We can do anything if we put our minds to it!

Pedro the Penguin - Story Script

W

Today we’re off to meet Pedro the Penguin in a very cold place called Antarctica. We don’t want to freeze while we’re on this adventure, so let’s get ourselves warm with some dancing! (Play music and dance - I like to use Boogie Wonderland which is on the soundtrack for the movie ‘Happy Feet’). Now we’re feeling warmer we sit with our legs crossed and roll our shoulders round and round...(use the shoulders song) Now let’s zip ourselves up in our special snow suits - one hand on our tummy, one hand on our back and zip all the way up to the top of our head. ZZzzzzzip! At the top we give a silent snowy cheer to the sky. Now we zip ourselves up the other way - swapping our hands ZZzzzzzip! And we give another silent snowy cheer to the sky! We heat up from the inside out by taking some lovely warming dragon fire breaths.

EV

We hug everyone at home goodbye with a big cuddly squeeze. And WOW! We notice outside to take us to Antarctica... Is. A. Helicopter! Woohoo! Let’s do our helicopter pose! We turn to the side, bend our knees, stretch our arms wide and twist to the front. To get in, we lift our arms up high, and sit down in the pilot’s chair! Time for take off. We jump our feet wide, take our arms wide and begin to spin (standing spins) so the helicopter lifts off into the air. We’re off! Weeeeee.

We control our helicopter using our steering sticks (rowing legs/feet). Holding our foot, we go chopper chopper, chopper one side, chopper chopper, chopper the other side, chopper chopper, chopper forward and chopper chopper, chopper back. We steer with the other stick too (repeat with the other leg) and finally we come into land (mouse pose). We sit up and see a sledge (bow pose), on our tummy we bring our heels up to our bottom, reach and take hold of our ankles. Now kick our feet into our hands and we lift. Remember to BREATHE and smile! The sledge is being pulled by lots of husky dogs (dog pose). Woof woof woof woof. The dogs pull us along the snow super fast.

PR

Wow! It feels like we’re ski-ing! We stand up, bend our knees and reach forward to hold on tight! Now we bounce, bounce, bounce down the hill. Let’s snow board (surfer pose) as well! Taking one leg and arm back, and zoom. Now we snow board (surfer pose) the other way too… zoom! The dogs take us as far as the mountain. We stand and bow saying Namaste (standing) to thank them.

The mountain is huge tall and still (mountain pose). Suddenly, we hear a noise…What’s that? Uh oh! It’s a polar bear! He gets up and walks this way, making big pawprints in the snow (dinosaur pose) Clump, Clump, Clump, Clump. Quick, we’d better hide. Let’s make ourselves into little snow balls (mouse pose). Sitting up. Phew… thank goodness he didn’t see us.

All of a sudden, whizzing on his tummy (seal pose) down the mountain comes a penguin! “It’s me Pedro.” He jumps to his feet and wobbles a bit as he gets his balance (penguin pose).

W

Namaste Padre. I am Pedro and I am trying to learn how to fly. I have lots of ideas to try so come on! OK! But we’re not sure as Pedro is a Penguin and we know penguins can’t fly.

With enough belief and hard work we can make the impossible, possible

IE

We follow him, taking big steps (sticky mud walks) up the mountain. At the top he tells us that he is now going to simply jump off and use his little wings to fly! Ahhhh! Before we have the chance to stop him… he dives off the side. Reach up and fold all the way forwards (ragdoll pose). Oh no! Coming onto your knees, he flaps his little wings (owl pose), but it’s no good! He lands with a splat on his tummy! (half pushup)

EV

Pedro’s next idea is to use the power of the wind and become a whirly spinning windmill. He hopes with enough spinning he will take off! We try to help with a few nice long blows but this doesn’t get him flying either. We have an idea and show Pedro how to do an aeroplane in yoga. Pedro watches us first as we demonstrate on one side then he joins in as we do the other side. Much as he enjoys the yoga aeroplane pose, it doesn’t get him flying in the way he’d hoped, so we keep thinking. Nothing seems to work, but Pedro does not let it get him down. He is determined to keep trying. He sits down, takes a big deep breath and sighs out all his worry and starts to think.

PR

We may fail lots of times before we succeed. The important part is keep going. To do this we use our determination.

to

All of a sudden a bird flies gracefully above us (parrot pose). Pedro looks up, his heart full of admiration for how wonderful and free the bird looks flying along. Pedro will not give up on his dream. He will make it happen.

Pedro is inspired by the parrot. We can be inspired too. This means something or someone and they help us find our way.

we see

He has an idea. “Come on… let’s get the tool box. We have to make something.” First we find the tool box (treasure chest) Here it is! We take out the saw, (telephone pose variation) and move it forwards and back to saw some wood - first with one side, then the other.

Next we hammer, (woodchopper pose) standing up, legs wide, take our hands behind our back and clasp our fingers, 1,2,3 fold forwards and Bang, 1,2,3 Bang and last time, 1,2,3 Bang. Finally we screw sitting on our bottoms, lifting up our feet and screw, twisting our feet one side then the other (boat pose variation with hands on the floor behind) making squeaky sounds as we twist them!

W

After lots of hard work, it’s finished. We have made a Hang glider! Pedro is nervous... but excited! Once more we take Big steps up the mountain, and this time Pedro jumps and catches the wind! (Flying pose). Yesss! He’s done it. Pedro is flying! We are so happy for him. Even the other birds in the sky tweet (tweety bird - standing) with surprise.

IE

All of the other penguins look up to see Pedro. They admire his determination and now want to have their own try at hang gliding! Pedro has inspired them. So each and every penguin get busy making their own hang gliders. Let’s repeat the hang glider making moves! (saw, hammer and screw.)

When you prove something is possible it inspires others to try too.

Relaxation

EV

Now Pedro spends everyday out flying on his hang glider, (flying other side) arms outstretched, other leg this time and lift off trying to keep your balance. As he flies, he wonders which dream to work on next. We have learnt from Pedro that we too can make our dreams come true, if we stick with it and keep trying.

PR

Woo, we’re super tired after all that flying. We lay down and draw one knee in and give it a kiss, then we lengthen it and take the other knee, hugging it in and giving that one a kiss too. We stretch out both our legs and let our arms melt down by our sides. We close our eyes and think about our dreams and imagine how we might be able to make them come true. Even if we don’t do something perfectly the first time, doesn’t mean that we should give up. We need to make a few mistakes along the way to become wise and to learn the best way of doing something. Like Pedro and his dream of flying. Let’s wake up now and gently wiggle our toes and fingers. We curl up and roll to the side, coming up to sitting with our hands at our hearts.

Follow-on Activity (Write your dream in a cloud) Begin by talking to the children about the ideas and dreams they have - what would they love to achieve? After talking about it, handout copies of the cloud (printable overleaf) along with pencils/ colouring pencils. The children can either write their idea in the dream cloud or draw a picture inside it. Make sure everyone writes the date and their name on their cloud too, so they can use it as a little reminder of their hopes and dreams. © Cosmic Kids 2018
