The Spa Experience at Home A beautiful bathroom creates an in-home haven THERE ARE SO MANY FACTORS when designing a bathroom and so many opportunities, even in the smallest space. A professional that understands spatial planning, plumbing considerations and finish possibilities can help you achieve a bathroom that is a tranquil space welcoming you after a long day. Layout and Plumbing Fixtures Functionality is never more important than in a bathroom. Each fixture should have adequate space and be positioned in the room to create an aesthetically pleasing design. Plumbing aspects must also be accounted for. If space is limited, many homeowners elect to install a luxurious shower with adequate interior room than trying to fit a bathtub into the space as well. A professional designer can help align the lifestyle of the homeowner, the size of the bathroom and the scope of plumbing fixtures available in the marketplace to create a beautiful, purposeful design.

Lighting, Flooring, Tile, Countertops Lighting is very important in bathrooms. There should be intentionality to the fixtures that are selected and where they are placed. Lighting near the mirrors should work to eliminate shadows while lighting elsewhere may be decorative or ambient depending on the overall design. In addition, floor and tile materials also serve a decorative and functional purpose. Selections here allow a homeowner to showcase their style preferences, but careful attention should be paid to their durability and maintenance. Natural stone, for example, is more porous than engineered stone and more challenging to maintain over time. The endless possibilities of tile can be mixed and matched to create a unique look that showcases the homeowner’s personality. Extra Amenities Large bathrooms can enjoy the benefits of extra amenities that transform it into a true retreat. Gas fireplaces and radiant floor heating bring warmth and luxury to a cold space. High-end toilets and bidets can make essential bathroom business more pleasant. Technology like televisions, sound systems and smart mirrors that can display the time, weather, calendar, news, and social media bring technology into the bathroom. Beverage centers offer freshly brewed coffee first thing in the morning so the homeowner can enjoy that “breakfast in bed” experience every morning.

Cabinetry Cabinetry is the place in the bathroom where personal style is expressed. A focal point in the room, cabinetry sets the tone for the entire space and provides ever important storage for personal items. Many options to customize the look of the vanity are available from door style and finish, to turned legs that create a furniture affect and floating cabinets that lend a modern feel. Custom cabinetry is the most flexible element in the bathroom in that it can be designed to meet the challenges of even the smallest of spaces. It can also rise to the occasion in the largest of bathrooms by providing multiple sinks, linen storage space, hidden hampers, or makeup vanities.

Whatever your bathroom size or style preferences, at TruKitchens we want to help you design a spa-like bathroom that invites you to linger. Our ability to create the optimal layout, navigate the vast finish options available, overcome technical plumbing challenges, and help you express your personal style makes us the perfect partner. ❂

CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Election Year The impact on the market and your investments

AS WE APPROACH ELECTION DAY, investors are understandably wondering – and maybe even anxious – about how the U.S. presidential election will affect the stock market. Election years often come with increased market uncertainty. And this year, COVID-19 and a fragile economy have added new dimensions to what may be a landmark U.S. Even without these usual circumstances created by the pandemic, it isn’t uncommon for the stock market to exhibit a degree of volatility in the election cycle. run-up to an election. This can be particularly true in the final weeks leadRegardless of who ends up winning in November, the election will ing up to the election and if the race is close. Investors should be prepared likely play a factor in the markets. Here are a few things investors for circumstances where the “noise” generated by the campaign contributes to market fluctuations. should consider: It’s not just about the president It’s true that our president has tremendous influence in the direction our country takes. However, it is important to keep in mind that regardless of who is successful in winning the White House, there is a significant difference between proposals and policy. How much any administration can accomplish is influenced quite heavily by the makeup of the House of Representatives, Senate, local and state legislatures, Federal regulators, as well as circumstances in the economy and the There are many important issues at stake, including trade, healthcare, country at large. tax policies, social justice and our relationship with China. How well the economy is doing is also a significant influence on the election outcome, In addition to electing a president this fall, voters will also be electing 35 especially for an incumbent or incumbent party. Dealing with uncertainty This year’s election season has been marked by unusual circumstances. Republican incumbent President Trump is running for a second term – after a surprise victory in 2016. Whereas former Vice President Joe Biden began the campaign season competing against 25 candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination before emerging as the party’s nominee after a rocky start.

Is history a guide? While no two election years offer the same set of economic or political circumstances, it may be instructive to take a look back to see how markets have performed in the past as a means of providing some context for the present. • Historically, market volatility begins to rise about 45 days ahead, or roughly three weeks into September, before peaking one week before the election. – David Joy, Ameriprise Chief Market Strategist. Aug. 2020. • In instances where control of the White House changes parties, stock market volatility tends to increase. – Ameriprise Financial: “Committee Perspectives: U.S. Election Guide” Aug. 2020. Compiled by Ameriprise Global Asset Allocation Committee. • During an election year, U.S. stocks and bonds tend to perform better compared to the year after. – “Report: Stock Market Performance By President”, Darrow Wealth Management:

• Interestingly, there has been very little difference in the performance of the economy under Democratic and Republican presidents since 1977. According to recent analysis by Deutsche Bank, “The average growth rate for a Democrat President is 2.9% compared to 2.7% for a Republican President.”4 However, it is acknowledged that the economic performance during a president’s term isn’t necessarily a direct result of the actions of their administration, as president’s ultimately inherit an economy shaped by their predecessor’s actions, as well as other structural factors. – Deutsche Bank Economic Analysis, 2020

What may be a more important consideration for investors than who is elected president are the longer-term drivers of economic growth and corporate profits, which are shaped by policy, but also other factors outside Washington. The impact on specific market sectors Although it’s speculative to try and predict the outcome of the election and all of the policy implications each party would impose, the result of the election is likely to influence key industries. Among the sectors of the market that could be affected in different ways are healthcare, energy and technology depending on the results of the election. What this means for your finances While it’s natural to think about the impact of the election on your investments, it’s only one factor. Stay attuned to the bigger picture of your longterm goals. Review your portfolio diversification and risk tolerance with a financial advisor for an objective perspective on your financial situation. ❂

SPICY STEAK AND BROCCOLI Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 6 1 beef tenderloin (1 1/2 pounds), cut into 2-inch cubes 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 3 tablespoons avocado oil, divided 2 cups multicolored, mini sweet peppers, cut into thin rings 1/4 pound broccolini, cut into 3-inch sections 2 large shallots, chopped 1/4 cup NAKANO Seasoned Rice Vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon sambal oelek (Asian-chili garlic sauce) or sriracha 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger In medium bowl, combine beef, soy sauce, cornstarch, black pepper and garlic powder. In large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add peppers, broccolini and shallots; cook 3 minutes, or until tender crisp. Transfer to clean bowl. In same skillet over high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil until shimmering. Add half of beef in single layer. Cook undisturbed 2 minutes, or until bottoms are browned. Stir. Cook 1 minute, or until outer surfaces are no longer pink. Transfer to bowl with vegetables. Repeat with remaining oil and beef. Return beef and vegetables to skillet over medium-high heat. In small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, sambal oelek, salt and ginger. Add mixture to pan. Cook 2 minutes, or until sauce is slightly thickened.

1/2 avocado 1/4 teaspoon serrano pepper 1 tablespoon cilantro 2 tablespoons NAKANO Organic Seasoned Rice Vinegar 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1 teaspoon lime juice 1/3 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup corn 1/2 cup red cabbage, shredded 1/2 cup jicama, diced 1/2 cup black beans, rinsed 1/2 cup shredded green cabbage 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 cup extra-firm tofu, diced 1/2 cup corn chips, crushed 1/2 cup spinach tablespoon queso fresco In bowl, mash avocado and add serrano pepper, cilantro, rice vinegar, sesame oil, lime juice and salt. Stir to combine. Build salad in layers of corn, cabbage, jicama, black beans, cabbage, tomatoes, tofu, corn chips, spinach and queso fresco while adding drizzles of dressing between layers. PRO FLAVOR-FUSION TIPS The key to a successful stir-fry is to use high heat to quickly cook meats and vegetables in stages without overcrowding the pan. This ensures that veggies stay slightly crisp, and meats develop a delicious sear instead of steaming. Avocado oil has one of the highest smoke points, making it a great choice for high-heat cooking like stir-frying. Hoisin sauce, which you can find in the Asian section of most grocery stores, is used frequently in Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. It’s a salty, fermented soybean paste often combined with garlic, chiles and five-spice powder, which adds a sweet, umami-rich, aromatic flavor to the dish. Shishito peppers are slender, mild, green Japanese peppers available in the produce section of well-stocked grocery stores or Asian markets. If shishito peppers are unavailable, substitute with multicolored mini peppers. Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 11

Color in the Kitchen

by Standard Kitchens

Warmer and Bolder OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS, kitchen aesthetics have been going toward warm colors and natural materials. Now more than ever, the home is meant to be a comfortable space where you freely live and express creativity. With COVID-19 affecting the whole world, we need the warm comforts of home to help ease our anxious minds. Warm neutrals that have been continuously trending up have fully arrived in the mass market. Off whites and “greige” paints are among the most prominently used colors. Simultaneously, soft, natural wood tones have been continuing to trend up. Material and color combinations have become a large focus in a complete design, such as a warm white paint finish with textured, stained shelves as a contrast. Countertop and backsplash materials also provide opportunity to bring warmth and coziness into the kitchen. Warmth in kitchen color and soft texture is a consistent trend that we have been tracking going into 2020. However, the pandemic has brought about new color trends that we did not anticipate. While warm neutrals and wood tones are among the most popular finishes for cabinetry and in the kitchen space, calming blues and greens are popping up more and more. The truly unexpected palette, that has started emerging during lockdown, is boldness and saturation in color. Being stuck at home has caused a feeling of unrest for many of us and being able to express your creativity through color is a

way of relieving that tension. Using a bold palette also makes a space entirely your own. Bold blues, reds, oranges, yellows, and purples are becoming quite popular in the furniture market. It’s safe to assume the same trend will continue into kitchen cabinetry. A mustard yellow island is not for everyone, but playing with color in accessories is a great way to refresh a space without feeling like you’re taking a big risk. Worldwide concerns take a toll on us all. It’s important to make yourself happy and comfortable during emotionally taxing times. Using warm neutrals, soft wood tones, and colors from nature, like blue and green, can take your space from simple to homey and comforting. Try out bold colors that you like; if it’s outside your comfort zone, take it slow and try out accents that don’t require a lot of commitment. Take control of your space, be creative, and most importantly make it your own. ❂

ALTHOUGH RARE TO FiND a timber home that isn’t situated deep in the mountain woods or overlooking water, this lodge definitely throws down the welcome mat with its everyday-getaway vibe. Many Americans have a love affair with the rustic appeal and timeless beauty of log homes; perhaps because these unique homes are part of our pioneer heritage. Modern-day homeowners catch cabin fever while vacationing in these wooden retreats, and these charming homes are cropping up in neighborhoods around the country. That’s exactly what happened to Sandy Kemppainen who built her first home with Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes almost 25 years ago. She was so impressed by the quality of the multi-generational family-owned and operated Wisconsin company that she built three more homes in the Houghton area of the Upper Peninsula which she rents out to nature enthusiasts and potential homeowners. The company asked Sandy to become their Independent Proprietor for Michigan, and she enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for the company’s product. After building two other homes, it was time for this homeowner to realize his childhood dream of living in a log home, and he and his wife took five years to design and choose the selections for their 6,500square-foot perpetual haven.

The home’s transitional entry features a mix of distressed wood surrounding 24- by 24inch tiles. The stairway includes a handcrafted, custom railing with turnbuckle, horizontal balusters. Golden Eagle shipped four, 38-foot logs and Jeff and his carpenters designed and cut the treads and stair string to create its dramatic open profile.

16 | autumn 2020

“My home went from napkin doodles to pulling all of my architectural drawings supplies out of storage and drafting relative scale drawings until I was ready to hand it off to Sandy and Golden Eagle’s architectural design and engineering team. We went through 18 redesigns until we landed on what I envisioned,” he said. Sandy shared that the typical Golden Eagle process is designed to relieve the busy homeowner from multiple meetings over material selection, although the level of customization on this home is not typical. “We work with the contractor to get all selected materials delivered to the site. Nothing is pre-assembled and we have a 6-day-aweek hotline for any builder’s questions. It's like having a whole team that is working for you.” On the strength of glowing community reviews, the homeowner selected Jeff Sherwood of Sherwood Custom Homes, LLC, for what was going to be a highly modified and customized project. “Golden Eagle provided the blueprints and all the dimensional framing lumber because it’s a conventional 2 by 6 framed home with log façade siding,” said Sherwood. “Nowhere in the

The 12 by 12, hand-hewn timber trusses that span the front entrance are architectural marvels to behold. The “all natural” landscaping theme was designed by Ryan Farnol a certified aquascape contractor and owner of Platinum Ponds & Landscaping. The design artfully incorporates over 250 tons of natural stone and took well over 4 months to install. The centerpiece is the captivating water feature. Heated concrete is a welcoming touch underfoot at the home’s front entry.

The exposed great room trusses are purely aesthetic and prepared by Golden Eagle’s CNC machines to provide a rustic, dramatic appearance. Huge crates of quarried North Carolina ledgestone were brought in to create the home’s 40-foot chimney, multiple pillars, and three fireplaces. A unique pergola gives shape to the kitchen within the wide open great room space. Character-grain hickory cabinets, custom built by Houtnerf Cabinet Co, Sherwood’s in-house cabinet shop, continue the rustic feel. Customized hammered metal refrigerator panels, farmhouse sink, and distinctive range hood complement the aesthetic.

country could we match the size and top-notch quality of the logs and log siding they provided. It took about a year and a half in the design phase and 18 months to build and we probably called the hotline one to three times a week with questions and they were incredibly responsive and usually could answer it on the phone or get back with us within a couple hours.” The imposing 12 by 12 hand-hewn timber trusses that span the front entrance and the pool area are architectural marvels to behold, yet presented Sherwood with significant engineering challenges. The homeowner designed distinctive 2foot roof overhangs to protect the exterior siding from the elements and created intriguing dormers and dimensional rooflines but the structural beams needed to withstand potential wind uplift. Each support was a multi-step process to pour footings, thread a rod up through each beam, drill holes on the limestone cap, and design brackets created by a metal fabricator to mount and secure the beams.

“Nowhere in the country could we match the size and top-notch quality of the logs and log siding they provided.”

Natural stone catches light differently than manmade, cultured stone; it’s apparent when approaching the home from its shimmer, texture, and dimension that there was no compromise in materials. The homeowner’s wife sourced huge crates of quarried North Carolina ledgestone, and Jeff ’s mason began a labor of love on the home’s 40-foot chimney, pillars, and three fireplaces. Natural stone presents a huge challenge as the mason must be able to sense where a stone should break, find its face, and trim and fit each stone with accuracy and artistry that is truly is awe-inspiring. While on vacation at a Western lodge, the homeowners admired a clever whiskey barrel rain system and challenged Jeff to avoid distracting downspouts by fashioning a similar set-up. CTS Welding in Grand Junction, Mich., fabricated logging chain into a solid rain chain which Jeff secured to a tile beneath stones in each barrel placed around the home’s perimeter. The homeowner is quite proud that this home achieves several goals: one concentrated entry point from the heated concrete front entry and

garage with immediate access to the upper and lower levels; a center hub that serves as command central for entertainment and visibility purposes; and exterior spaces that become inviting and usable because of their accessibility.

“Golden Eagle can provide beautiful materials, but if the build isn’t well-executed, that doesn't really mean anything. From start to finish, the caliber and thoroughness of Jeff’s work shines through.” “I wanted a 1,200-square-foot center section with four wings set at a 45-degree angle so that everything flowed into the center part of the house and we got as many windows for natural light into the central area of the house,” he explained.

Solid surfaces are key for the transitional entry in this hard-working home and the homeowner selected a mix of distressed wood surrounding 24- by 24-inch tiles. One of the most visually arresting elements in the entry is the stairway which was something else the homeowners found on their travels and recreated in their home. From a photo, CTS Welding handcrafted a custom railing with turnbuckle, horizontal balusters which are repeated on the base of the dining room chairs. Golden Eagle shipped four, 38-foot logs and Jeff and his carpenters designed and cut the treads and stair string to create its dramatic open profile.

The entire lower level is fully outfitted to serve as a dormitory for up to 9 international students who are sponsored by the homeowner. COVID made this mission a reality as many of the students were unable to return to their home country when the college closed its doors during the worst of the outbreak. A full kitchen, booth seating, and a sunken entertainment theatre keeps the students self-sufficient.

As Sherwood explained, “I’ve been a cabinet maker my entire life so woodwork and design are my passion: I get just as involved in the design process as I do the overall build.” This proved to be a critical attribute in this project as he was able to take Golden Eagle’s exterior blueprints and feed them into his Chief Architect software to create a virtual 3-D model of the home. Sherwood Custom Homes’ interior design staff was able to take the years of material selections the homeowners had worked so hard to amass and place them into the software program so that everyone could do a virtual walk-through of the entire home before making any final decisions. Typical of a custom build of this scope, many design decisions were made on the fly as the homeowner’s creative vision was sparked. As the home was being framed in, he had the brilliant idea to ask the electrician to wire all the exposed ceiling beams with low voltage lighting on dimmers. This casts dramatic shadows on the ceiling and the entire home glows at night.

“Our masons are artists as it takes skill to shape real stone, but they take the time to do it right.”

Another example is the unique pergola that gives shape to the kitchen within the wide open great room space with its soaring 36-foot fireplace and

ceiling. The homeowner had seen a corrugated metal roof used inside one of Sandy’s log home rentals and was drawn to its rustic appeal. As the space was framed in and its natural light revealed, Jeff felt that an open design would allow more light and communication from the upstairs spaces to the great room. He sketched out the pergola design and his craftsman hand hewn logs and incorporated lighting over the island to create a fun, eclectic centerpiece. The kitchen is also one of the many rooms that showcases the skill and attention to detail of Sherwood Custom Homes. They have an inhouse cabinet shop where their craftsmen design and produce woodwork built to any specifications from any species of wood. Much of the cabinetry in this home is character-grain hickory because of its distinct grain. Customized hammered metal refrigerator panels, farmhouse sink, and distinctive range hood complement the rustic setting.

The homeowners commissioned the creation of four, multi-story, solid steel chandeliers located throughout the main floor. As each fixture weighs roughly 400 pounds, it took 6 brave souls up on scaffolding to secure them in place. Folding glass doors expand the great room entertaining space allowing the homeowners options when the pool and hot tub area are in full use. The porch also features decorative concrete floors and changing rooms and showers for guests to use without having to enter the home.

All the remaining logs and beams, window casing and door trim, molding and bunk beds needed to be cut on site. To get that rough, hand-hewn Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 23

look, the carpenters used a Log Wizard debarking tool attached to a chainsaw. Sherwood’s craftsmen were so used to finely detailed finish work that they had to work against their perfectionist nature to leave the exposed joints that made this such a character-rich home.

“I’ve been a cabinet maker my entire life so woodwork and design are my passion: I get just as involved in the design process as I do the overall build.”

The exposed great room trusses are purely aesthetic and prepared by Golden Eagle’s CNC machines to provide the rustic, dramatic appearance the homeowner sought. The sheer height of the ceiling created an engineering challenge as the trusses needed to be built in place on the subfloor, then secured in place after the roof was on.

One of the homes most prominent features is its private airstrip. The homeowner fulfilled a lifelong dream creating this meticulous setting. The extensive landscaping, all designed and installed by Platinum Ponds & Landscaping, includes retaining walls, walkways, and staircases formed from South Dakota flagstone and Western Canadian slabstone with some rock weighing in at 1,000 pounds. Tiki torches surround the pool and fire pit, and 65 landscape lighting fixtures illuminate the trees and plantings to make the outdoor spaces equally inviting at night.

Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 25

Sherwood’s crew cut holes in the roof for a crane that was used to lift the heavy, full beams up to the rafters for fastening. Similarly, the homeowners commissioned the creation of four multi-story, solid steel chandeliers located throughout the main floor. As each fixture weighed 400 pounds, it took 6 brave souls up scaffolding to secure them in place. No reports on who will be volunteering to change any of the 56 LED lights if they go out. The folding glass door concept evolved with the decision to expand the great room entertaining space allowing them to seat up to 40 people for meals. They are also able to fully close off that space if a rambunctious crowd is using the pool and hot tub area, and the porch has decorative concrete floors and changing rooms and showers for guests to use without entering the house.

“You have to have an eye for the face of natural weathered limestone — in this case we used Missouri Moss rock — to predict how water will flow naturally over it.”

It is important to note that this home was built with the intention of accommodating others who may need shelter. A completely separate and self-contained 1,500-square-foot apartment was built above the garage to host families that need transitional living. The entire basement is fully outfitted to serve as a dormitory for up to 9 international students who are sponsored by the homeowner. COVID made this mission a reality as many of the students attending school were unable to return to their home country when the college closed its doors during the worst of the outbreak. A full kitchen, booth seating, and a sunken entertainment theatre keeps the students self-sufficient.

The home’s many oversized windows exist to bring the outdoors inside, so great attention was paid to outdoor living spaces as well. One of the most obvious, prominent features is that the home sits on a private airstrip. The homeowner’s father served on a Boeing B-17 bomber in World War II, and as an aviation enthusiast himself, the homeowner fulfilled a lifelong dream creating the home’s meticulous setting. To create an environment befitting the home’s rustic nature, the homeowner sought out a landscaper whose career started in the high Rockies of

Colorado. Now located in Kentwood, Ryan Farnol, owner of Platinum Ponds & Landscaping, is a certified aquascape contractor. He responded to the inquiry with a virtual 3-D landscape design rendering that took 80 hours to complete and handily won the job.

Crafting Beauty Since 1980

His “all natural” theme artfully incorporated over 250 tons of natural stone and took well over 4 months to install. The centerpiece is the captivating water feature that Ryan explains is a very difficult aspect of landscaping to engineer properly.

RJ Raven offers exceptional handcrafted custom wood doors, entryways and windows in any style — traditional, historic or contemporary. Built by highly skilled artisans in our West Michigan studio.

“You have to have an eye for the face of natural weathered limestone — in this case we used Missouri Moss rock — to predict how water will flow naturally over it,” Ryan stated. “There's only about 3 feet of total height in the driveway turnaround, but we used every inch of that height and changed directions with the water to ensure that every waterfall is different from the one above it.”

Around the Fire The Ultimate Gathering Spot WHEN IT COMES TO SPECIAL times there is nothing that quite compares to socializing around a fire. Whether it is a fire pit, a fire table or an outdoor fireplace, fireside relaxing is a great way to decompress or unwind. No other outdoor area quite compares to it. Gathering around fire creates a magical and memorable time together, whether its roasting marshmallows for a s’more, singing along to a song or just watching the flames dance. There is just something about the fire that is extraordinary. Fire features come in many different forms. Fire pit areas being the most popular. They can be as simple as a hole lined with fieldstone or as elaborate as a custom remote-controlled natural gas fireplace. Cost can range from a one hundred-dollar portable fire pit from Meijer to a 20,000dollar custom masonry fireplace with natural gas and a remote-control. There’s even new technology from SOLO that controls combustion and airflow to provide a low smoke fire. This cannot be duplicated. When is comes to a well-designed area for a fire pit, much depends on the style and placement. For example, a standard wood burning fire pit ideally should be located downwind and away from your home. If it is a gas fireplace it can be close and even connected to your home and easier to access. Your fire feature can also be a part of an area that has a pool, outdoor kitchen or a water feature. These outdoor entertainment areas are very popular and often include many different things. They can be multi leveled with lighting, large TVs, sound systems and outdoor heating elements. With today’s lifestyles, outdoor living can provide a much-needed area for entertainment at home. So … let’s stay home tonight and sit around the fire! ❂ Mike Mlnarik has a passion for creating distinctive landscapes and has been bringing his award-winning designs to life since 1983. The Mitten Brewing Company’s Dedication to Giving Back PIZZA, BEER, AND PHILANTHROPY. These are the three pillars of The Mitten Brewing Company, an eight-year old brewery and pizza joint on Grand Rapids' west side. Founded in 2012 by locals Chris Andrus and Max Trierweiler, The Mitten quickly became a staple in GR's restaurant and beer scene, fueled by a slew of tasty options, as well as the founders' dedication to giving back to their communities. At the core of this standout business — it's hard to miss in the renovated Engine House No. 9 — is Andrus' transformation from a hustling band member to a thriving restaurant owner who carefully positioned his business to give back. An alumnus of West Catholic High School and Alma College, Andrus decided to pursue the music business full-time after graduation. For 10 years, he and his band traveled across the country, playing over 100 gigs per year, and almost snagging that coveted major label record deal. However, as Andrus approached age 30 and found himself spending the night on a pool table in a bar in Steubenville, OH, he began to question: "What am I doing with my life?" "I was starting to get really jaded by the business," said Andrus, who added that at that point, he "Played more bad gigs than good ones." Andrus effectively quit the business and swore off music — even tunes in his car — for two years. During that time, he began home brewing beer in his garage with childhood friend Max Trierweiler and searching for his next career move. With little experience in either hospitality or restaurants, together, they decided: "Let's start the West Side's first brewery."

“It seemed silly because we had no experience,” he added with a laugh. But for Andrus, who had spent a decade weathering the uncertainties of the music business, “Opening a restaurant/bar ... you know the most-likely-to-fail thing in the world ... seemed like the safer bet.” Andrus and Trierweiler soon began searching for the location of their brewery, and stumbled upon the abandoned Engine House No. 9 on the West Side's Leonard Street. Already familiar with the building because he had played gigs for years in the former Juke's Bar across the street, Andrus was instantly hooked. “We fell in love with that building,” he said. “It was Victorian, it was kind of hidden behind some trees ... it was architecturally very interesting.” At that time, that stretch of Leonard lacked curb appeal, with many abandoned store fronts and boarded up windows, but over time, with developments like The Mitten and Two Scott's Barbecue, the corridor has slowly become a destination for foodies and craft beer lovers. “It took a leap of faith to invest in the West side ... now it seems like the right move,” said Andrus, who added that he sought to emulate what other successful breweries were doing across the country at that time. “Their success was built on reclaiming forgotten spaces, and industrial zones ... we wanted to do that here ... we wanted to create a unique destination.” To create this unique destination, Andrus and Trierweiler sought to position their brewery as a 38 | autumn 2020

business focused on building up their surrounding community through philanthropy. “Even before we had any money to give away ... we wanted to stand out, we wanted to do it differently,” said Andrus. To accomplish this task, they encouraged their initial investors to handpick beneficiary nonprofits in that first year, resulting in 12 chosen organizations to which The Mitten donated a portion of their profits. “It really made the relationships with our investors stronger,” said Andrus. In the eight years since opening, The Mitten has adjusted its giving platform to accommodate more than a percentage of their annual profits.

Andrus noted comically that writing a check from The Mitten Brewing Company also felt a tad awkward, and their initial giving process generally resulted in the same amounts of funds donated each year. To further expand the business' philanthropy, Andrus and his team founded the Mitten Foundation Inc. in 2017. “We realized we could fundraise more money by leveraging our relationship with our vendors,” said Andrus. By combining the talents and passions of community partners, mug club members, and fellow small and big business owners in the community, Mitten Foundation Inc. has quickly taken to supporting diverse projects on the West Side. For

Andrus, it was easy to find causes in need of extra support. “In our block, it's not difficult to find need on every corner,” he said. In 2018, the foundation raised $52,000, contributing to 600 school uniforms, 80,000 meals for Westsiders through Feeding America, $2,591.48 in heating assistance for neighbors on the West side, and more. In 2019, the foundation raised $75,000, including $10,000 going toward shelter costs for domestic abuse survivors, and 10,000 sack suppers donated through Kids' Food Basket.

“Even before we had any money to give away ... we wanted to stand out, we wanted to do it differently.”

Each year, the foundation's beneficiaries change, showcasing the nimbleness of the organization. Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 39

Andrus even wrote about his journey through business and philanthropy in a book released earlier this year: Dough Nation: How Pizza (and Small Businesses) Can Change the World. In a Revue Magazine book review, the author cites a brewery survey in which 61 percent of respondents listed philanthropy as their reason for patronizing the restaurant. It's The Mitten's dedication to giving that helped the restaurant and brewery weather the ongoing storm of COVID-19. "The eighth year was the hardest year for sure," said Andrus, who added that after seven years of double digit growth, the business may not turn a profit in 2020. Despite the economic uncertainty of 2020, The Mitten has continued to serve its famous pies and beer throughout the pandemic, closing its dining room during the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order but remaining committed to takeout pizza. Andrus also provided hazard pay for his employees during that particularly uncertain time, as well as applied for federal loans and grants. “I learned a lot about management...during that process,” said Andrus.

“This isn't really about beer and pizza to me. This is what their mom and I, and our partners built.”

“The good thing about it is, we can be flexible. We're a small company,” said Andrus. Current projects include “Fun for All,” a campaign in partnership with The City of Grand Rapids to raise $50,000 to build a universallyaccessible playground and ground surface in Richmond Park. “We realized that the power of our platform ... could raise more money than we could ever move from our bottom line to someone else's,” said Andrus, adding that amid the impact of COVID19 in 2020 and their lowest yearly profits to date, the Foundation is on track to raise the most money yet. Andrus adds proudly, “We can disambiguate giving from profits.” “We're probably not going to make any money this year, but we'll have raised 80,000 for nonprofits,” he said.

“It became much more of a good place to go home to...”

“We don't know anymore than they do ... it was about survival and doing it right.” And just after the infamous post-protest riot that saw numerous downtown windows smashed, The Mitten was there, donating pizzas to those participating in the clean-up effort. Soon after schools closed in early March, they also camped out at Harrison Park School to donate hot, fresh pizzas to families suddenly without the support of free school meals. “We kept things going during the uncertainty of the pandemic because service is where our heart lies,” said Andrus. From student to rock star to small business owner, the past two decades of Andrus' life have been marked by big adjustments. All the while, his wife Shannon Andrus, founder of Hearts for the Arts — a Westside DIY art studio for all ages and abilities — was supporting his vision, while pursuing her own artistic projects. “She was instrumental in getting the Mitten open,” he said. The two met while she was an artist and he was a musician, and Andrus noted, “We were both poor together.” When the brewery finally opened its doors in 2012, the couple's first born, August, was just 6 months old. “He was a colicky little fireball,” laughed Andrus.

me it was about finding a balance in the early years,” said Andrus. “We're still here most days, but we take off Wednesdays to be with the kids.” Andrus eventually upgraded his home, as well. In 2016, the Andrus family moved from a 900square-foot “crowded clown car,” in his description, to a more spacious house in Rockford. “It became much more of a good place to go home to,” he said. But regardless of where he lives — whether he's working at the brewery, home with his two sons, or raising money for his foundation — community building remains at Andrus' core. As the brewery and the restaurant grows (you can now visit them in Grand Rapids, Northport, and Saugatuck) and the foundation continues to increase its giving, this unique business thrives according to its mission. “This isn't really about beer and pizza to me,” said Andrus, who tries to actively involve his family in the business and its philanthropic efforts. “This is what their mom and I, and our partners built.” ❂

Eventually, the couple, along with Trierweiler, found balance in their business and their family lives, ultimately bringing in enough revenue to hire management and more support staff. “To

Wood Walls Creative Ways to Use Wall Planking HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED all the ways wall planking could be used to show your style and personality? Adding the beauty of real wood to a room, office or other project provides a comfortable, natural look. Great American Spaces, available through Standale Home Studio, offers wood wall planking that is very versatile, and can help you add the warm welcome of real wood without any of the mold, bugs and chemicals that might be found in reclaimed wood. In case you are in need of some project inspiration, the designers at Standale Home Studio are there to help, and here are a few simple ideas. Wrap It Using wood wall planking as a wrap-around can add the finishing touch you just can’t get with other materials. A bar surround can bring a man cave to a whole new level. Use four inch planking such as Rustix or BrewPub to wrap (or even build) floating shelves. Wrap the front of a desk in a lobby to make a commercial space or office more inviting. Use wide trim boards to wrap exposed beams. You can really wrap anything with a flat surface that you want to add a bit of natural character to.

Projects Whether you are a crafty person who likes to create things for their own use or gives them as gifts to family and friends, you can use Great American Spaces planks in your projects. Create a one-of-a-kind headboard for a farmhouse feel in any house. Rustix boards are uniformly 48 inches long, so they are easy to work with for smaller projects like building picture frames or framing a mirror. And don’t forget about the floating shelves mentioned earlier. Accent Walls If you have a small space or the idea of a whole room with wood planking on the walls seems a bit much, just doing one wall as an accent can change the whole look of a room. A wood wall behind a headboard can add warmth to a bedroom. Adding wood in a pattern and mixing different colors for a creative pop can show off your personal style. With the four Collections from Great American Spaces, the possibilities are endless. All of the Great American Spaces products are fast and easy to install by professionals or DIY-ers, manufactured with solid wood, and made in the USA right in Grand Rapids, Mich. Visit Standale Home Studio to check out the different Great American Spaces Collections in their new state-of-the-art studio. Their professional designers can also give you tips on where to use it and how to install it.

Ceilings If you have a smaller room, an old stucco or popcorn ceiling or an elevated ceiling, adding wall planking can completely change the vibe. Going with a darker color can make a room feel cozier, while using a lighter tone can create an open, airy feel. An enclosed outdoor space or covered porch ceiling takes on a whole new life when covered Easy BarnWood or ShipLap, including the new smooth ShipLap, from Great American Spaces.

Check out greatamericanspaces.com for design inspiration, product information, installation instructions, and additional resources for Industry Professionals. GUN MAXiMiZiNG SPACE ON GUN LAKE

LAKE LIVING is a common ambition for Michigan residents, especially those who spend years living in land-locked suburbs. Ross and Bonnie Bainbridge are no exception. Having lived and raised their children in Byron Center for decades, the couple sought to convert their Gun Lake autumn cottage into their permanent residence, focusing on a comfortable and practical design that could accommodate year-round living and entertainment for the entire extended family. In early 2017, the Bainbridges found themselves on a tour of Design Build Concepts’ Spring Parade Home, “The Nest.” Two years prior,

TEXT BY LAUREN FAY CARLSON IMAGES BY NEXT DOOR PHOTOS the couple had purchased a small, yellow cottage on Gun Lake, and were considering an adjustment to year-round lake living. They were immediately inspired by the Parade home’s modern farmhouse design; the clean lines, dark windows, and liberal application of white shiplap meshed well with their traditional aesthetic. Dan Venema, who founded Design Build Concepts (DBC) in 2003, and business partner Kurt Ingersoll, immediately clicked with the couple, and their team began discussing their approach to renovating their lakeside home.

“Ross and Bonnie have built and designed many homes throughout the years,” said Venema. “It really made the process seamless and enjoyable.” Together, Venema and the Bainbridges developed a design that accommodated the cottage’s existing lake views, detached garage, and a courtyard in between that could accommodate nighttime fires with the adjoining neighbors. “I just love the challenge of small building sites and maximizing home space,” said Venema, who enjoyed the process of designing a new home to replace the existing cottage, one that would include three bedrooms, a bonus space for the grandchildren, plenty of outdoor space, and even an office within a 50-foot wide lot. “They really loved the look of the parade home that they visited,” said Venema, including the contrasting white and black accents and liberal integration of board and batten, as well as shiplap. “We really wanted to stay true to that vision initially.” “We told him we like openness,” said Ross. And Venema delivered, crafting an open concept layout with ample views of the water in the majority of the rooms throughout the house. The modern farmhouse style was complemented with the warm tones found in the flooring. The main house was finished in striking hardwood on the main floor.

46 | autumn 2020

“Because there’s surrounding cottages on both sides, it’s really cool when you’re in the kitchen looking out towards the lake,” said Venema. “It’s kind of a panoramic view … but it’s very private at the same time. It really makes it feel like you’re by yourself.”

Clean lines, dark windows, and liberal integration of board and batten, as well as white shiplap meshed well with the homeowners’ traditional aesthetic. Accents of red are found throughout the property and add the right amount of flare to the neutral palette of the modern farmhouse design.

Views of the lake are particularly striking in the home’s kitchen. Whether the couple is preparing food in the double ovens or relaxing at the large, central island, the water seems just footsteps away. Here, natural light plays with bright white accents further highlighted by recessed lighting, along with oversize pendant fixtures above the island. For an even closer view of the water, the Bainbridges can enjoy a meal at their picnic-style dining table beneath an elegant chandelier. Sliding doors and yet another set of windows offer an alluring lakeside escape. “Landscape, too, was a key element,” said Venema, who partnered with Grand Haven’s Essex Outdoor Design on maintaining the existing layout of the property while enhancing its livability and prospects for entertaining friends and family. Just beyond the front door, the Bainbridges enjoy a spacious stone patio, including a built-in outdoor fireplace. Natural stone steps lead visitors from the patio to the dock. This careful stonework, supplied by Grand Rapids’ Belden Brick and Supply, wraps around the front of the home, past an outdoor grill and a bright side door in Benjamin Moore’s “2018 Color of the Year,” Caliente. The path continues to the unique space nestled in between the main house and the carriage house, a structure that doubles as a detached garage and an additional apartment for overnight guests. This inviting courtyard connects the two structures and offers a communal area for family, friends, and neighbors to enjoy an outdoor fire pit.

This careful stonework wraps around to the front of the home.

“Ross and Bonnie wanted to keep some of the elements that they had in their cute little yellow cottage,” said Venema, including the communal courtyard. Some of these pieces of the former property found their way to the carriage house studio, which includes a full kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and common area. The kitchen itself features the existing granite from the former cottage and mimics its original layout. Here, pops of color — like a small red lantern atop a teal locker used for extra storage — neatly fit among the warm Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter on the walls and bright Decorator White trim that carry over from the main house. Benjamin Moore’s Caliente can be found in unexpected places in both properties, adding flare to the otherwise uninterrupted neutrals of the modern farmhouse design. In the carriage house, a sliding farmhouse door is a wash in this uplifting red, coordinating with the bathroom vanity and other design elements throughout the sleeping and entertaining spaces. This delightful shade, as well as unique tile selections throughout the home and carriage house, were chosen by Bonnie, who after years of building and decorating multiple homes, has a careful eye for design. “Bonnie has really good taste,” said interior designer Greta Huizenga. “And it was fun picking out tiles that, for example in the master bath, in the laundry room, in the master shower … things that weren’t in budget, but she knew she wanted them.” The owner bathroom is one such example where Bonnie and Huizenga worked together to carefully select finishes that represented the couple’s taste. The standing shower, finished in dusk subway tile, features a mosaic-style panel in an expression that is truly spa-worthy. This feature is instantly visible upon entering the bathroom, a seemingly sprawling escape that includes his and hers vanities, an additional storage cabinet, and a jetted tub.

A communal courtyard is found between the main house and the property’s carriage house — an inviting area for friends and neighbors to gather around an outdoor fire pit. The carriage house doubles as a detached garage with an upstairs apartment for overnight guests.

“[Bonnie] was very open … if she fell in love with something, she wanted to make sure that she could introduce it and implement it in the home,” added Huizenga. Ever the attentive neighbors, the Bainbridges decided to delay demolition of the yellow cottage and construction of the new home until the Michigan summer season had waned at Gun Lake. “They wanted to not disturb the summertime for their neighbors,” said Venema, whose team began their work in fall 2018 and completed construction summer 2019. And though they indeed sought the modern farmhouse look and accomplished a crisp, new design, the Bainbridge’s maintained their intention to fit in with the existing lakeside neighborhood. “They’re very humble people,” said Venema, who noted the couple’s desire to mimic “That same kind of cute, cozy feeling that the yellow cottage prior to it had.” He added that the new design is “not standing out, it’s blending in.” And despite impressive features that invite and surprise, “it still has very similar elements to the surrounding area, and it blends in very well.” The Bainbridges’ desire for comfort and accessibility is also expressed in the home’s warmth. Working with Huizenga to accomplish this unique feel among an otherwise modern design, Ross and Bonnie incorporated some of their existing furniture, and chose new pieces in medium and light wood stains that complement the modern farmhouse look.

Warm tones were incorporated into the home’s flooring choices, as well. The main house was finished in hardwood on the main floor and carpet in the guest area and office upstairs.

Even in the hand railing leading to the main home’s second floor, the Bainbridges sought to achieve an inviting, traditional look. Together with Huizenga, they worked with B&D Metal Fab of Morely, Mich. to create a custom fabrication for the railing. “They were able to achieve that and give them more of a traditional look,” said Huizenga. In this accessible cottage on Gun Lake, the team at Design Build Concepts was able to create and style a design that reflected the homeowners’ desire for a modern farmhouse look with a traditional feel. “Every client comes to us with a wishlist,” said Venema. “Our job is to take that list, get the overall vision from them, take the elements of the site itself and the surrounding homes, and then put together a great home plan design for them.” “We were extremely pleased of how easy everything went,” said Ross, adding his particular fondness for the airy, open feel of his new lakeside home. “The openness makes it seem larger than it is,” he added. “When people come in they are amazed by how much room there is inside of it.” After one year of year-round lakeside living, the Bainbridges take solace in a job well done, and a design that truly reflects their day-to-day life. Through the careful application of the couple’s vision and the expert work of the entire team, DBC helped the couple realize their ambition for modern cottage living. ❂

relaxation SWITCH THE MERE MENTION OF THE TOWN OF PENTWATER, Mich. brings summer fun to mind: charming shops, great restaurants and beautiful Lake Michigan beaches. But, for this Michigan family, a cottage on Pentwater Lake serves as a peaceful sanctuary — an escape to custom luxury most every weekend come summer. Once they arrive, it’s like hitting the off switch — relaxation ensues.

The screen porch is open to the lake so the patio door ushers lake beauty and light into the family room.

“We have a very busy lifestyle, and the second we are up there we relax and unwind,” said the owner. “It truly has been wonderful for our family.” The couple wanted their dream cottage to be a place where they could relax, restore, entertain — and most importantly—spend quality time with their two young boys, ages 6 and 7. “They will have so many great memories, family memories up there,” said the owner. Those involved in creating the cottage say the property on which it was built is one of the last prime pieces of real estate on Pentwater Lake. The views speak for themselves. “There is always activity on the lake and it’s just breath taking to watch it. It’s such a gem for us,” said the owner. Years before their fantasy escape came to fruition, the owners began compiling a wish list of things they wanted. They used this scrap book to serve as a guide for the creation of their haven. “My husband and I, we looked through magazine after magazine ... and we just gradually, over a several year process, collected pictures of things that we would want in a cottage.” The couple brought that scrapbook to architect Jeff Visser of J. Visser Design. He used the couple’s ideas to create an open floor plan with the main entrance off to one side in an effort to

include an “abundance of windows to the north and south” to maximize light and view. “He pretty much hit the nail on the head with his first design,” said the homeowner. Tim Brinks, owner of New Urban Home Builders, brought Visser’s design to life. Brinks spent 16 years working on historical restoration projects in Chicago. He now specializes in creating unique custom homes for clients working with smaller spaces. “That’s really what we like to do. It’s a lot of fun and really is, I think, a lot more satisfying for clients when they see what you can do with a smaller amount of space and how the details can really make a house more livable,” said Brinks. Brinks said the prime location made working on the Pentwater property a builder’s paradise. He ensured the cottage soaked up every ounce of the landscape. “The views start as soon as you turn in on the property — it's a great set up,” he said. “We wanted to spread the house across the lot as much as possible and take advantage of the view.” That meant utilizing large, open windows to bring in the most light. For example, the gigantic windows in the dining room carry light all the way through into the kitchen. In addition, the screen porch is open to the lake so the patio door ushers lake beauty and light into the family room.

THE VIEWS START AS SOON AS YOU TURN ONTO THE PROPERTY. THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION ENSURED THAT THE COTTAGE SOAKED UP EVERY OUNCE OF THE LANDSCAPE. THE RESULT: A UNIQUE CUSTOM HOME WITH AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN HAVING OPTIMAL VIEWS OF PENTWATER LAKE.

THE CHOICE OF FABRICS AND FURNITURE WERE MADE WITH THE COUPLE’S CHILDREN IN MIND. IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT THE CHILDREN WERE COMFORTABLE EVERYWHERE — NO PLACE WAS OFF LIMITS. BUTLER USED SOOTHING SOFT HUES TO CONTRAST THE STARK WHITE CABINETS FEATURED THROUGHOUT THE HOME. CLEAN AND SIMPLE FABRICS ACCENTUATE THE PEACEFUL, SOPHISTICATED INTERIOR.

The outdoor living space is a favorite room of the homeowners. “It’s an outdoor space that feels like we are still inside,” said the homeowner. Large windows in the master bedroom also lure in sun and offer a bed side view to the lake activity. “We can lie in bed and watch the boats go heading out to the big lake. It’s just very serene very peaceful for us,” said the owner. Todd Wiley, owner of Tru Kitchens, designed the cottage’s kitchen and bathroom. “They have very sophisticated taste but were very open to suggestions or ideas,” said Wiley. “The premise was somewhat of a contemporary farmhouse.” The kitchen is designed with an open floor plan that allows for a connection between the kitchen and other rooms in the home. Wiley said it was important that the kitchen doubled as an area for entertaining. “In home design now we put a lot more thought into the kitchen being a place to hang out in rather than the traditional living rooms,” said Wiley. In their kitchen, the cottage owners wanted a warm atmosphere that would allow for conversation and fellowship. This desire is what drove the decision to use wood — walnut and grand bamboo — instead of granite or quartz on the counters, said Wiley.

THE KITCHEN, DESIGNED BY TODD WILEY OF TRU KITCHENS, FEATURES A COMPONENT DESIGN WHERE EACH OF THE DIFFERENT AREAS IS UTILIZED FOR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS. A WALNUT-TOPPED ISLAND GIVES THE SPACE INVITING WARMTH, CREATING A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE FOR CONVERSATION AND FELLOWSHIP.

Wiley designed the kitchen by component design, meaning each part of the kitchen was designed for specific functions. To that end, the main window area serves as a space for cleaning and dish storage. This section includes the main sink, dishwasher and cabinetry to house dishes. The cooking wall contains the stove and refrigerator, while the island serves as a place for cooking preparation. An end-grain bamboo top sits at one end of the island to provide a place for chopping. In addition, the island contains a beverage refrigerator, and a small narrow sink that doubles as an ice bucket called a trough sink. The island is also equipped with a microwave drawer which conceals the microwave while offering convenient access. “We are doing far less upper cabinetry in kitchen design because we are doing so much with windows or islands,” said Wiley. “This allows for convenient storage in drawers below.” The booth seating offers a soft seating area set up as a place for the couple’s children to eat breakfast. The magnificent view was a determining factor in where Wiley placed the kitchen elements in the locations he did. For example, the kitchen sink faces away from the water, but the island and cooking areas face the lake. One of the kitchen’s most unique features is the tile wall that surrounds the window above the kitchen sink. Whereas traditionally homes implement just an 18-inch back splash, Wiley opted to tile the entire wall in lieu of implementing a wall covering to create “consistency and texture.” Jennifer Butler, the owner of Jennifer Butler Interior Design created the interior landscape of the Pentwater Lake cottage. Butler said she designs her homes based on how her clients want to feel when they are there. “In the end it is their space and it’s how they feel in the space to live there that determines whether it’s a success or not,” said Butler. The owners revealed to Butler that they wanted the interior of their getaway to live up to its name. “A place you could go to get away… that you just could relax,” said Butler. THE OWNERS’ SUITE CONTINUES THE FEEL OF ELEGANCE WITH ITS SIMPLICITY. IT FEATURES EARTHY TONES THAT COMPLEMENT THE BEAUTY OF THE OUTDOORS. IT’S A PRIVATE GETAWAY WITHIN THE COTTAGE. “They wanted a space within their own space so the master suite is truly a private getaway within their own cottage,” said Butler.

For Butler, part of creating the tranquil environment her clients envisioned meant working in conjunction with the intent of the architect.

“It’s very elegant in its simplicity. There’s not a whole lot of fringe and frills and trim and all kinds of details,” said Butler.

“There’s a lot involved in creating the whole feeling of the exterior, and I think that the plan and the exterior should be cohesive with what’s inside,” said Butler. “It shouldn’t be vastly different. It’s relaxing in and of itself and you want to accentuate it rather than take away from it so that your interior isn’t distracting from the beauty of what is in front of you outside,” she said.

In addition, Butler’s choice of fabrics and furniture kept the couple’s children in mind. “You want the kids to feel like they are always a part of everything and they don’t have to be separate,” said Butler.

To that end, Butler used soothing soft hues to contrast the stark white cabinets featured throughout the home. Clean and simple fabrics as opposed to fabrics with a lot of detail and beading accentuate the peaceful, sophisticated interior.

To that end, the booth seating makes for easy cleaning, as do the slip covers on the dining room chairs. Plus, the stools around the booth are virtually indestructible, she said. The owners’ suite is the couple’s retreat within their retreat. Here, the carpet mimics grains of sand and earthy tones complement the beauty of the outdoors.

The homeowners said the cottage is everything they could have imagined when they began charting their dream escape by way of magazine cutouts years earlier. Now, their fantasy cottage may be providing the inspiration for someone else’s dream scrapbook. “We just love it. We absolutely love it.” ❂
