It’s that time of year when keeping your skin hydrated becomes an ongoing battle. No fear, we’ve found a solution: introducing Alpha Skin Care

Our CH tester used Alpha’s two best-selling body products for a week with glowing results. This antiaging skincare duo hydrates and exfoliates for an all-day glow. Starting with the moisturizing Body Wash that is formulated with 10 percent Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) to gently release dead skin cells and reveal fresh, healthy, younger-looking skin. Next, an application of the Renewal Body Lotion that is formulated with 12 percent Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) to thoroughly hydrate and gently exfoliate, leaving skin soft, smooth and younger-looking from head to toe.

Holiday Gift Guide

Financial Gifts with a Lasting Impact

The holiday season is quickly approaching and for many that means time with family and loved ones as well as pressure to find a perfect and meaningful gift. If it is important to you to give presents that provide lasting impact and never go out of season, consider a financial gift. Here are a few ideas you can feel good about giving.

Start a savings account. Help instill the importance of saving with the gift of a partially funded savings account. Consider opening a high-yield savings account or Roth IRA for someone you love to help them establish a relationship with a financial institution and learn the importance of a growing investment.

Contribute to charity. Donating to charity on behalf of a loved one can be a powerful way to give back while sharing your values with a future generation. Spread the holiday spirit by planning a day to volunteer together or contribute to a nonprofit organization that supports causes important to the person receiving the gift.

Provide education funds. If someone you know is likely to have educational expenses in their future, consider gifting money to help offset the cost. Consider opening a 529 plan for a beneficiary, which allows the funds to be withdrawn tax-free to pay for eligible education expenses down the road. You may open different accounts for each beneficiary and reassign them as needed. Communicate your intentions with the beneficiaries so they can plan how to best utilize the fund to further their education, keeping your intentions and wishes in mind.

HELP

CHIP

AWAY AT DEBT

. Many young adults are burdened by debt as they work to establish themselves financially. Whether balancing student loans or car payments, juggling work and loan repayments can be challenging. Helping your loved one chip away at loan repayments can relieve stress and allow them to better focus on their future financial goals.

Gifting stock. Gifting stock is a great way to introduce a loved one to the world of investing. If you’d like to give stock you already own, the shares need to be retitled in the beneficiary’s name. You can also purchase new shares titled in your beneficiary’s name. If you are gifting stock to a minor, you can retain some control by placing it in a trust.

Gift an appointment with a financial advisor. Help your loved ones establish a financial plan with the assistance of an advisor you know and trust. This thoughtful gesture has lasting value by helping lay the foundation for future financial security.

As you consider how to gift your wealth to those you care about, ensure your giving strategy is aligned with your financial plan. A financial advisor working with your tax professional can help you evaluate tax-efficient financial strategies to help maximize your gift this year – and into the future.

Tree House

Tree House

A THORNAPPLE RIVER CONTEMPORARY

TEXT BY RJ MEINDERTSMA IMAGES BY

Frank Lloyd Wright, the quintessential American father of Mid Century Modern design, adhered to his number one tenet that the best design is one that brings the outdoors in and the indoors out, prioritizing “nature” as sacred.

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” – FLW

Obviously, to pull this off, a home must have a worthy, unique setting begging for harmonization. Wright’s design philosophy was “organic architecture” that accommodated both the environment and inhabitants. For over 70 years he designed more than a thousand structures using his signature ornamental detail, earthy colors and warm textures. His Influence has extended well beyond his era. Many contemporary architectural designers draw inspiration from his principles of open spaces, efficient use of materials and a connection to nature aligned with sustainable and eco-friendly design practices.

Recently, in West Michigan, J Visser Design, Cannarsa Structure and Design and Homes by Denali have collaborated in Wright’s philosophy to create the “Tree House” along the scenic banks of the Thornapple River in Cascade. Their creation truly captures the principles of natural beauty in a design.

The new owners of Tree House raised their family on the site in a traditional, 100-year-old log cabin structure. Here they developed priceless memories and a love of river living but, as they became “empty nesters,” they envisioned building their dream: a house reminiscent of the mountain modern homes of the Martis Camp near Lake Tahoe in Truckee, California. They wanted a home that was one with the Thornapple River Valley’s natural beauty and scenic vistas. The aforementioned trio of professionals was up to the task, each having many Mid Century Modernstyled projects in their diverse portfolios.

“Because our wooded hillside property along the river reminds us of a beautiful National Park, we wanted a house that would look natural in the landscape — like it had grown from the terrain, as opposed to a stark structure that appears like a helicopter set it down,” said the owner.

Homes by Denali, founded in 2018, is led by Shawn Frisbie who has a passion for quality, value, sustainability and customer service. Frisbie’s goals focus his team on delivering exceptional results on time, making the building process as straightforward and stress-free as possible. Frisbie vows from start to finish Denali will be transparent, responsive and dedicated to deliver the highest quality custom homes to their clients.

Frisbie honed his skills in the construction trades starting as a tender, carrying buckets of plaster for his father in their family business. He learned quickly through hard work that quality work is an artform. Once he graduated from high school, he began to gain experience working in carpentry first as a framer and later, as a custom trimmer. In 2018 he built his own home which further moti vated him to pursue his dream. After a stint as a project manager for Falcon Custom Homes and being part of Falcon’s 2016 “Cosmopolitan Home of the Year,” Frisbie banked that experience as a springboard and took the plunge going out on his own with Homes by Denali. According to Frisbie, since its inception, their projects continue to get bigger and better.

Shawn Frisbie was referred to the owners by a mutual friend. The client had already selected J Visser Design as the architectural designer and the drawings were complete. Although Shawn had never worked with J Visser Design directly, he was well aware of their quality work.

Frisbie acknowledged, “I’ve always loved Jeff Visser’s intangible designs. They are always very unique, yet the architectural elements always let you know it’s a J Visser home.”

Visser countered, “Shawn took ownership of the project and immediately picked up on the mod ern spirit of the house.”

J Visser Design, an award-winning, boutique, res idential architecture and design firm founded in 1990, believes that well designed homes enhance the client’s quality of life through craftsmanship, scale and good taste, down to the smallest of details. Their team recognizes that while there are infinite ways to arrange rooms on a floor plan, it’s best to begin with a blank slate while evaluating the topography, the owner's wishes and the budg et — these all give direction to a client-appropri ate design. A recent emphasis has been the inclu sion of environmentally conscious practices rang ing from energy efficiency, eco-friendly building materials and streamlined space maximization. Ninety percent of Visser designs, like Tree House, are on water; their portfolio includes homes along the Lake Michigan coast from St. Joe north to the Grand Traverse County area.

J Visser’s design for the Tree House harmoniously blends, becoming part of and connected to the landscape it inhabits, as if it has always been of that place. Site orientation takes advantage of the natural amenities with numerous outdoor spaces, beckoning panoramic views and natural lighting.

The Tree House is a contemporary eclectic hybrid with basic underpinnings of Mid-Century Modern design but also drawing inspiration from a Scandinavian motif. The back two story wall of glass immediately draws the eye to the sweeping river landscape and gives the illusion the covered deck is part of the interior floor plan making it a prime spot to host outdoor gatherings.

A cohesive use of geometric shapes and clean lines continue throughout the open floor plan. Eyes are drawn upward to the distinct mono sloped roofline that soars to an 18-foot ceiling, visually extending out the upper level wall of glass melding with the soffits and wooden facade of the home.

Abundant natural light floods the open floorplan with a welcome warmth. For privacy, motorized screens hidden in the support beams can be lowered over the windows.

J Visser homes are meant to endure, standing the test of time, looking even better as the years pass.

“This project draws from a number of influences and went through an interesting evolution from conception to realization,” said Tim O’Hara, partner and senior designer at J Visser Design. “The end product does indeed enforce many of the tenets of Mid-Century Modern — with its open floor plan, floor-to-ceiling windows, sleek lines and natural materials; the original impetus, however, was to create a contemporary home that responds to modern needs ... this is to say that we aimed to create a home not of any certain style, but primarily one that would be connected to the natural setting in its layout, function and materiality.”

John Cannarsa, owner and principal of Cannarsa Structure and Design, was recommended to the

clients by Jeff Visser to provide his wealth of experience and design vision. Cannarsa believes your well-lived life starts at home where details matter, vowing to celebrate and capture the beautiful, functional elements that make your house a home. Taking a page out of Wright’s design vision, Cannarsa designs each unique property, internally and externally, from the outside in by blending color, texture and scale creating a custom dream home.

Cannarsa founded his firm in 2004, and calls both Saugatuck, Michigan, and Sarasota, Florida, home. Randi Tett, a graduate of the nearby Kendall College of Art and Design, was the lead designer for this project.

“John and his team are very organized and professional,” said Frisbie. “Everything is on point. In

the end everything is pulled together for a beautiful home.”

In defining the collaboration with both Homes by Denali and J Visser Design, Cannarsa simply stated, “Teamwork, pure and simple. There are inevitable challenges with any project and this group came together to not only solve issues, but to look for opportunities to enhance various aspects of the home.”

Cannarsa’s approach is flexible and caters to a client’s needs and experience. To get things started, they meet with clients virtually or in person to make a personal connection and discuss goals. Next, the design team visits the project site to discuss feasibility. Once again, this can be accomplished in person or through remote means. In moving forward, through multiple meetings, a

The sweeping river view remains unobstructed by an open runner, single rail stairway with a unique, custom handrail that leads to the lower level.

clear detailed plan is created as a structured roadmap of the project. To begin construction, the perfect team is assembled to make the project as stress free from start to finish.

The Tree House is a contemporary eclectic hybrid with basic underpinnings of Mid-Century Modern design but also drawing inspiration from a Scandinavian motif. Flat planes and geometric shapes, integration with nature, open floor plans, minimalism, and form and function in the interior and exterior are all evident.

Arriving via a paved meandering drive to the affronting circular motor court, guests are greeted by sloping flat planes of dual divergent rooflines of the main structure and a three stall garage which are connected by a flat roof reminiscent of a retro “breezeway. Six-foot, overhanging, lit eaves — a hallmark of the mid-century style — ground the structure with linear, tongue-and-groove upturned wooden soffits precisely jointed on the corners that gently reach up to meet the metal shed roofline as a unique architectural ornamentation.

Jeff Visser elaborated, “We wanted unusually large overhangs. It is a very simple structure, and we wanted the overhangs to soar out from the walls. To try to simplify the construction of that, we used web trusses that taper up to achieve this without breaking the bank.”

www.hardtopix.com www.beldenae.com

The kitchen area yields to a comfortable living space casually set to face a zero clearance fireplace with an organic, cement raised hearth by Hard Topix with matching mantle. The stonework from Belden Architectural Elements, a continuation from that of the rest of the home, reaches upward with a unique double column design.

“When Jeff first showed me a drawing with the long roof overhangs resembling a baseball cap brim, I worried they might look odd,” said the owner. “He assured us they would look great in scale. The overhangs are now one of my favorite features of the house.”

The distinctive visual appeal is enhanced by varied, unique-shaped rectangle, square and trapezoid modern windows set in vertical wooden siding. A cantilevered flat roof extends out defining a welcoming, front, paver-clad sitting porch. Keeping geometric, the inviting front entry features a custom wooden door with horizontal slat windows and a wall of squared glass looking spectacularly through to the rear windows of the home.

Wright dedicated himself to the celebration of nature through architecture. Site harmony is a hallmark of his design philosophy. Today, this element has become key to any high-end, contemporary, custom build. This use of organic architecture with natural materials and textures inspired by nature are often integrated into both the exterior and interior design where innovation allows a merging of the two blurring their boundaries.

This prioritized, organic harmony is immediately evident in the Tree House setting. The pleasing, rich- toned, Scandinavian-style vertical siding is manufactured to celebrate variation in grains and tones blending seamlessly with both the existing greenspace and the rough stone masonry skirt that wraps around the entire lower level. The masonry work also extends up the multi story chimney stack. The calming browns are juxtaposed with the darker, connecting, middle structure and framing features. Cleverly, the three garage doors, as well as some interior doors, are hidden with the vertical wood motif.

John Cannarsa shared, “Their former home is opposite of the new home in many ways, but we wanted to retain some of the charm of the original. The cabin was rustic, simple and cozy, so as a team we tried to bring those elements into a modern, more sophisticated home without going too far.”

Tett continued, “In many ways, it was a collaborative process to achieve this more elevated ‘log retreat’ family home.”

Frisbie pointed out, “The siding is thermally modified Ash that is natural without a finish. It’s naturally heated in a vacuum chamber which burns the sugar in the wood, caramelizing it. This allows it to withstand moisture and insects and will platinum out beautifully over the years.”

The topography of the building envelope gently slopes down to the riverside of the home allowing for a walkout nestled into the bluff. After a brief leveling to allow for a matching stone paver patio with an adjacent, dedicated, private spa nook, the grade continues but steeper to flow outward for nearly 120 feet to the river’s edge. The rear is indeed the epitome of a blended indoor and outdoor living concept.

The rich- toned, vertical siding from ThermalWood of Canada showcases the variation in grains and tones and blends seamlessly with the existing greenspace. A rough stone masonry skirt, from Belden Architectural Elements, wraps around the entire lower level and also extends up the multi story chimney stack.

The riverside of the home is also a continuation of the natural wood tones. Jutting off the upper level is a partially covered lookout deck that offers an unobstructed, westward, treetop sunset view of the Thornapple River watershed between the Cascade and Ada dams. The legendary Camelback Bridge stands a bit downstream. Walls of multi-level windows and sliding glass doors also welcome the panoramic vista.

The orientation of the home is situated in lovely woods with mature oak and poplar trees. A lush lawn transitions in a seamless manner to a tasteful, complementary landscape design with evergreen and deciduous plantings. Boulder walls ease and secure the side grade to the lower level. The lower reaches yield to the natural beauty of the tranquil setting.

“No house should ever be on a hill or on anything. It should be of the hill. Belonging to it. Hill and house should live together each the happier for the other.” – FLW

As far as the interior, as guests pass through the aforementioned portico into the foyer, the cohesive use of geometric shapes and clean lines continues through this open space floor plan. The back two story wall of glass immediately draws the eye to the sweeping river landscape which is unobstructed by a unique open runner, single rail stairway with a unique, custom handrail. Eyes are then drawn upward to the distinct mono sloped roofline that soars to an 18-foot ceiling, visually extending out the upper level wall of glass melding with the soffits and wooden facade of the home. Abundant natural light floods the open floorplan with a welcome warmth. For privacy, motorized screens hidden in the support beams can be lowered over the windows.

To the left guests are teased with a glimpse of the ample dining and kitchen area through a transparent screen wall with a metal cutout mimicking the exterior treescape. An attached floating lower cabinet and table provide necessary storage for the dual areas. Nearby doors are masked with an eyecatching continuation of the wood ceiling cladding and a retro starburst pendant light accents the space. Not surprisingly, simple European White Oak flooring flows throughout the main area.

“Our clients wanted a ‘Modern Lodge’ feel, and we really sought balance to avoid a heavy, dark feeling,” said Cannarsa. “Simplicity and comfort are important for the family, so again, we targeted a balance between function and beauty. The rooms are very well proportioned, while the overall home feels spacious and cozy.”

The kitchen is designed in a practical manner to include a 10-foot island with seating for four making it a prime spot for casual entertaining. Upper cabinetry and island continue with vertical wood treatments and natural hues, while the lower cabinetry is a subdued gray. A connecting pantry with a tucked away refrigerator stands nearby.

Arriving via a paved meandering drive to the affronting circular motor court, guests are greeted by sloping flat planes of dual divergent rooflines of the main structure and a three stall garage which are connected by a flat roof reminiscent of a retro “breezeway. “ The roofing was meticulously installed by Versatile Roofing Systems.

The kitchen area yields to a comfortable living space casually set to face a zero clearance fireplace with an organic, cement raised hearth with matching mantle. The stonework, a continuation from that of the rest of the home, reaches upward with a unique double column design. The rear glass wall gives the illusion the covered deck is part of the interior floor plan making it a prime spot to host outdoor gatherings.

Lighting and decor continue the journey of diverse geometric shapes and sizes. The pendant fixtures range from a linear dining light to a circle fixture near the fireplace. As a fresh, funky vibe, the stairway is lit by a collection of multisized “gourd-like” fixtures.

The reliance on a basic, neutral wall color serves as a blank canvas for decor, yet also unifies the entire level of the home. Darker, nearly industrial posts, beams and framing accents continue from the exterior to help define the open space. The simple color palette consists of varying hues of browns, grays and taupes accented with pleasing pops of color that lead the eye across the room. Minimal wall decoration and clean straight lines emphasize space maximizing by removing unnecessary elements thereby reducing clutter. In short, Wright’s maxim “Less is More” is paramount.

“Less is only more where more is no good.” – FLW

Cannarsa sees the home as organic modern with a focus of the design embracing pure and natural finishes like the wood and stone elements that continue throughout and feel simultaneously vintage and modern. Adding textured heavy rugs and wall treatments, wooden and glass tables, rough woven chairs and a comfy leather sectional augment the attractive aesthetic and add charm and sensibility.

Discreetly off the kitchen lies a back hallway connecting to the garage. As a whimsical, magical feature, walls are adorned with a sculpture by artist Cara O’Brien. The organic art consists of dozens of individually created circular ceramic pieces attached randomly to the walls creating a cozy feel.

The back of the home’s layout includes a tiled laundry, a secluded music room with connecting bath, a tiled mudroom with built-in lockers and handy bench, and ample storage for transitional gear. With forethought to aging-in-place, an elevator is included to access the lower level.

The open staircase’s wooden runners turn upon landing at the lower level recreation space complete with a bar/kitchenette and game closet. A

nearby entry from the covered patio boasts a finished mudroom. Passage through an adjacent shielding vestibule are two individual bedrooms that share a full bath with an adjoining hot yoga studio. The studio sports specialty cork athletic flooring and mirrored walls. A hidden door, incorporated into the mirrors, leads to the owner’s spa oasis. The completely tiled bath features a floating underlit double vanity, luxury steam shower and innovative barrel stay clad stainless steel cold plunge tank.

“We love a challenge and take great pride in being known for truly custom pieces,”said Frisbie. We created a prototype for the plunge tank with a Scandinavian slot footboard. We actually disassembled the unit and hid the chiller in the yoga room.”

To the left of the lower family room lies an office bump out and an additional bedroom with a full bath. Space dedicated to the elevator, ample storage and mechanicals complete the design.

Wright championed that the shape of something should be directly derived from its intended practical purpose; in other words, form follows function. A clear example of this is the aforementioned transparent foyer wall that defines the space while shielding a direct view of the home’s interior adding additional storage. Also, while the

modern staircase performs an obvious function, it does so unobtrusively providing abundant natural light and natural beauty. Yet another element is an efficient, airy floor plan with limited wasted space while allowing for clear sightline interaction throughout each connecting zone of the great room.

This connection can also be made with the home’s artistic lighting scheme, the remote placement of the music room, heat retaining masonry with a southern exposure and low Uvalue, high performance windows that are both eco-friendly and acoustic dampening. All of these elements also manifest an inherent, contemporary artistic beauty.

“Form follows function - that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.” – FLW

“This home was so much fun to work on and a big part of that was because of the clients,” said designer Randi Tett. “They made the design process so fluid, were open to new ideas and were consistently enthusiastic.”

With a broader stroke Jeff Visser added, “It was always about the feeling of being in the trees ... on the edge of the bluff.”

Their clients concurred, “We wanted the warm and cozy feel of a European ski lodge like our log cabin but with tall windows along the ridge to capture the stunning views in almost every room ... it’s like living in a treehouse.”

Frank Lloyd Wright made his indelible mark on architecture. Today, in West Michigan, consummate professionals like Homes by Denali, J Visser Design and Cannarsa Structure and Design have picked up his timeless torch, taking his movement forward into the 21st Century with evolved creations like the Tree House. A design which creatively combines Wright’s sensible trademarks progressively with a modern contemporary flair, simply confirming that anything based on “Wright” can never be wrong. ❂

Prairie California Finds Its Home in Ada

MODERN

At the end of a scenic drive through the picturesque Kennett Square neighborhood, a striking residence comes into view and commands attention. Its California modern prairie influence is evident at first glance in the low-pitched roof and clean exterior lines, but the residence is perfectly at home in its Ada setting. It seems to say, “I belong here.”

Over the past 30 years, the builder, Bruce Heys (rhymes with “ice”) of Bruce Heys Builders (BHB) has crafted remarkable, high-end custom homes and renovations across greater West Michigan. “We build homes that stand the test of time,” says Linda Miller-Heys, Bruce’s wife and the interior designer at BHB. Custom-built interior doors and precision-crafted 14-inch-deep engineered floor flooring joists are just some of the quality hallmarks of a BHB home.

The entire Kennett Square neighborhood, home to this distinguished property, marked a new chapter for BHB as it was the first development they built. “Linda and I dreamed of a community of custom, high-end homes in a quiet, wooded area,” Heys explained. “When we found the land for Kennett Square, we prioritized preserving as many of the original trees as possible, keeping the land as untouched as we could.”

This commitment to preservation is evident in the prestigious enclaves’ sprawling wooded lots, designed for eight executive homes. Most lots span over three acres, with each home tucked into the rolling terrain. The secluded feel is unmistakable, yet downtown Ada and Cascade are just minutes away.

The neighborhood’s name holds a personal connection: Kennett Square is named for the Philadelphia suburb where Miller-Heys grew up, and its winding street is named after her childhood road—a touching gesture from Heys.

As Bruce Heys Builders celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, Bruce Heys and Linda Miller-Heys knew that creating this distinctive home in their Kennett Square development for the fall Parade of Homes would be a fitting tribute. The design not only honors the company’s legacy but also showcases their commitment to timeless beauty and innovative materials.

The home’s features establish a sense of understated elegance. The spectacular stone in the center of the facade frames two expansive 7-foot by 7-foot windows. The stone and windows are flanked by eco-friendly ACRE™ panels, made from upcycled rice hulls, that evoke the warmth of wood. It’s a perfect balance of modern sophistication and harmony with nature.

“The stone transitions from linear to random,” explained Miller-Heys. “We asked Ophoff Masonry to over-grout and grout unevenly to capture the natural look we envisioned.” Exposed scuppers replace traditional gutters, enhancing the home’s design and providing water management, while granite lintels frame the large windows, anchoring the structure visually.

“We also hand-applied a clear coat to the ACRE™ panels,” she added, “a meticulous process that highlights the vertical grain of the material.” This attention to detail accentuates the horizontal lines, which she felt was important with such a linear design.

The home’s California prairie-inspired design is a product of collaboration with Dru Chapman Lewis, founder and principal architect of Studio Chapman in East Grand Rapids. “Dru’s approach is organic and I knew this would be an organic home,” Miller-Heys noted. “I wanted it to feel natural and unpretentious, with seamless flow between indoors and out, and unique, custom features.” After an initial meeting to share her vision, Miller-Heys watched as Chapman Lewis brought it to life.

“Working with a female architect was a wonderful experience. Her attention to detail was outstanding,” praised Miller-Heys. “She really listened— she absorbed every idea, then translated them beautifully into the design.”

Thoughtfully placed windows and natural materials ground the home in its setting, while the design maximizes functional space. “Dru and I

carefully considered how to position the home on the lot to best suit the family who will live here,” Miller-Heys shared.

“Bruce and Linda have been such thoughtful stewards of this land,” Chapman Lewis said. “I wanted the house to feel as though it grew organically from the landscape.” The home’s distinctive L-shape means that as you approach the home from the front, only the facade is visible, resulting in a wow factor as you drive around and see the home in its entirety.

Inside, the home radiates warmth through natural, refined elements. Miller-Heys selected rich

textures and warm tones throughout, with barnwood-wrapped beams adding both structure and style. These essential beams not only enhance the modern prairie aesthetic but also strengthen the home’s connection to the outdoors. “Linda infused the interiors with tactile quality,” Chapman Lewis said. “Her attention to details, like the wool stair runner and textured wallpaper on the primary closet doors make the house feel like home.”

In the kitchen, custom RIFT oak cabinetry by Paige Woodworking evokes the beauty of the outdoors while maintaining the home's refined design. Gold hardware, plumbing fixtures, and graceful pendant lights add another layer of sophistication, while the Emersyn Lane Rockwell Twill matte pennyround mosaic backsplash reinforces the home’s refined, organic feel.

“I chose the mosaic backsplash for its matte finish and natural tones, which echo the stone textures outside,” Miller-Heys explained. “The gray in it reminds me of the slate we used in the front and back entries.” Upscale additions like the Wolf range and Sub-Zero appliances complete the kitchen’s elevated feel.

In keeping with the kitchen’s elegant design, a custom-built hutch serves as both a focal point

and functional storage. “We wanted it to have a distinct look, like a standalone piece of furniture,” Miller-Heys noted. The concrete countertop and gold-framed upper cabinets, featuring glass inserts with a sand-painted glaze, blend seamlessly with the kitchen’s upscale finishes.

A custom walnut table by Forged by Design adds a striking contrast, while rattan chandeliers with sleek gold accents lend a touch of understated glamour as they frame the expansive square window.

At the far end, a blue cork wallcovering, brassand-glass shelving, and a walnut floating shelf illuminated by wall-wash lighting complete the space. This striking backdrop adds depth and warmth. “I love how that nook finishes the room,” said Miller-Heys. “The blue cork wallpaper ties in with the slate from the entry, creating cohesion.”

A standout design element is the use of contrasting color for the window grilles on either side of the kitchen. Black window grilles in the dining room’s grand window draw the eye, while white grilles in the windows above the farmhouse sink allow them to blend into the kitchen, demonstrating Miller-Heys’ eye for balance.

The great room’s stunning 12-foot vaulted ceiling, a Ghostwood white pine tongue-in-groove paneling prefinished in a light whitewash, creates a spacious feel and draws your eye upward. Two large ring chandeliers and a modern stucco fireplace introduce a contemporary flair, while expansive glass doors and grilled sidelights invite natural light into the space. Another rich walnut barnwood-wrapped beam defines the transition from the entry to the living area and adds warmth.

The warm walnut detailing extends along the edges of the fireplace wall, adding cozy contrast to the clean, white space. The fireplace, originally intended for the wall between the kitchen and great room, found its home on the exterior wall. “Moving it here opened up the flow between the living room and kitchen and allowed space for that incredible hutch,” explained Chapman Lewis.

At the entrances, natural slate tiles replace maple flooring, bringing the greenish-blue tones of the outdoors inside. In the back entryway, slate flooring offers practical functionality while adding

beautiful texture, complementing the home’s natural palette.

A circular rattan light fixture hanging in the back entryway echoes the soft curves of the front entry’s chandelier, balancing the home’s geometric elements. “One of the things I kept consistent was the circular lighting, but I used it in a different dynamic each time,” said Miller-Heys. “I wanted that softness to contrast with the square edges of the home. I chose each fixture for the ambiance it brought to the area — and all of them are on dimmers.”

Natural light floods the back entryway through the home’s second oversized square window, which frames the pastoral beauty of the wooded lot. A third walnut barnwood-wrapped beam brings cohesion across rooms. Custom lockers with walnut pulls, a built-in home office nook, and a walnut bench and countertop with a waterfall edge, crafted by Paige Woodworking, complete the space’s thoughtful design.

This attention to detail continues into the powder room, where BHB’s signature craftsmanship shines. American walnut vanity, built by their expert finish carpenter, features dovetail drawers and premium Blum glides. Initially, the clear glass sink revealed the plumbing, so Bruce-Heys cleverly suggested painting the underside black, giving it a sleek, sophisticated look.

A screened porch is tucked into the inner corner of the home’s L to create an effortless flow between indoors and outdoors. The walls and ceiling feature the same eco-friendly ACRE™ material as the home’s exterior, creating visual harmony, while the floor boasts durable, stylish Tek Dek synthetic flooring.

The primary bath features a custom back-to-back walnut vanity with satin nickel fixtures. A walnutframed mirror from Sligh Closet & Glass with integrated lighting adds sophistication, while a wet room with a soaking tub from Richard’s Kitchen & Bath completes this private oasis.

Rounding out the main floor is an exceptional primary suite that offers a well-appointed, serene retreat, with luxurious, tactile details like York Dutch Braided wallpaper-wrapped barn doors leading to both the bath and closet, that latter of which also houses a washer and dryer. The barn doors’ durable, commercial-grade wallpaper is paired with recessed hardware to reduce wear, making it less prone to scratches.

In the primary bath, a stunning custom back-toback walnut vanity with satin nickel fixtures, surrounded by windows, takes center stage, anchoring the space with tranquility and elegance. The vanity design provides separate areas for each owner, allowing both to use it comfortably at the same time. A walnut-framed mirror with integrated lighting adds sophistication, while a wet room with a soaking tub completes this private oasis.

“One of the things I love about this home is that it’s fully livable on the main level, which will allow the owners to age in place,” Chapman Lewis shared. “But the lower level offers ample space for a larger family, with plenty of room for entertaining on both floors.”

When designing the layout, Chapman Lewis carefully considered the placement of the primary suite. “I pictured the owner walking from the suite to grab her morning coffee. I wanted the route to the kitchen to feel effortless, like the most natural path through the house,” she explained. “That vision helped lock in the home’s L-shape, allowing for a smooth walk from the bedroom to the kitchen, with just the right amount of transition space along the way.”

Ghostwood cladding by the staircase adds a textured detail that mirrors the great room ceiling upstairs, unifying the levels.

A lower-level door opens to a stone patio with meandering steps that lead to the backyard, where ample space hints at potential for a future pool. At the top of the stone steps, another patio awaits, offering two entry points to the house— one leading to a butler’s pantry just off the kitchen, and another to a relaxed screened porch nestled in the corner of the L-shaped layout.

“The textures and materials make this room unbelievably cozy,” Miller-Heys added.

The addition of a retaining wall addressed the dramatic slope from the entry to the southern exposure. “We envisioned the stone wall as an extension of the home into the landscape,” Chapman Lewis explained, highlighting a meaningful architectural detail that anchors the structure within its natural setting.

Miller-Heys adds that the grading work in the backyard was extensive but well worth it. “With the kitchen-adjacent patio, screened porch, winding stone steps down to the lower patio, and backyard designed for a future pool, it’s set up for a backyard fantasy land.”

Both front and back landscaping, executed by Rooks Landscaping, masterfully blend cultivated and natural elements. Mature trees stand proudly alongside newly integrated elements, creating a harmonious blend between the home and its surroundings. The winding stone pathway at the front provides a perfect prelude to the home. "I knew I wanted something organic, not structured

or linear," recalled Miller-Heys. "When I met with Rooks Landscaping, I described a meandering path, like walking through an enchanted forest. He nailed it."

To enhance key features, BHB partnered with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives, who expertly used ground-up lighting to create striking exterior effects. The uplighting of the paperbark maple tree, sourced from Rooks Landscaping, and the subtle low wash light cast on the central stonework, allow the property to truly shine, even at night. "He does incredible work," Miller-Heys remarked. "He highlights what matters most, and lighting from below offers a whole new perspective."

The collaboration between BHB, Miller-Heys, Chapman Lewis, and all the skilled tradespeople resulted in a distinguished masterpiece. “We received tremendous feedback during the Parade,” Heys shared. “Visitors loved the unique exterior and custom touches but also appreciated its warm, welcoming feel.”

This home doesn’t just impress with its design—it’s also a showcase of cutting-edge technology. A Sonos sound system fills the space with music, while smart switches and discreet pop-up electrical outlets blend convenience with clean design. Anderson digital door locks add a layer of security and sophistication.

Every feature was chosen to blend seamlessly into the home’s design, proving that innovation and elegance can go hand in hand.

As much as it’s a beautiful and smart structure, this home is ultimately a testament to inspired architecture and expert craftsmanship. Its seamless fusion of California modern prairie design with the natural beauty of the Ada countryside makes it more than distinctive—it’s a space that feels timeless, as if it was always meant to be here. ❂

Home Home

2014: Inspired by the Southern plantation and low-country look prevalent in the Florida panhandle communities, this fave from 2014 offers that fresh coastal flavor. Built and designed by DeHaan Homes with interior design by Laura Davidson of Dwellings, the home truly lends a feel from the deep South all while capturing impeccable views of Lake Michigan. Enjoy!

hen the owners purchased the lot on Lake Michigan, they knew exactly who should handle the interior design. They had recently finished another project with Laura Davidson, owner and principal designer of Dwellings, and they trusted her creative vision. They pictured a warm, comfortable home for entertaining family and friends, but something that still felt like a cottage. What was built offered a taste of the Deep South and something decidedly different than anything else on the lakeshore.

Laura vacationed in Watercolor and was captivated by the Southern plantation and low-country look prevalent in the Florida panhandle communities. She wanted that fresh coastal flavor — the front ele-

vation and open great room concept — for her client and wanted someone who could interpret her vision and make it a reality in the Michigan dunes.

Teaming with Douglas DeHaan of DeHaan Homes gave her vision shape. “I value his sense of scale and taste. It wouldn’t be the house it is today without Doug’s design input,” she declared.

“Once we have the premise and vision in mind, we take off,” Doug agreed. She talks, and I draw. With some homes, you’re rebuilding the dream, but with Laura, we designed the dream.

“That’s what differentiates DeHaan Homes: we’re a true design/build firm. My background is

engineering and my passion is architecture, so I understand both left and right brain thinking. We’ve been able to implement that in our business … designing both interior and exterior architecture, and then partnering with an interior designer.”

The exterior is very structured and organized similar to a colonial plantation in the Carolinas. Plantation shutters were engineered into the front doors and windows to complement the curb appeal. For a coastal feel, it has horizontal board and batten finishes, no shake, big vents and long overhangs, and a double-pitched metal roof. The roof promises a symphony of sound when rain combines with the waves.

The kitchen, with cabinetry from Woodways, reflects the owner’s passion to entertain. When guests come in hungry from the beach, she sets out snacks on the waterfall granite island which gives her space to use the other island for cooking preparation.

Picture finding a piece of driftwood along the Lake Michigan Shore and you’ll have an idea of the palette of subtle but rich colors to be found inside this stunning home.

There are many fresh and unique details in the front entrance alone that serve to demonstrate its singularity. The vestibule is flanked by floor-to-ceiling mirrors with built-in benches and coat hooks for guests. Cerused oak floors, an upholstered nailhead barn door to close off the study, and a swooping staircase design deserves special mention.

Doug calls the design a “curve counter-curve, bell shape” which is repeated in other elements in the home. Although the overall architecture and window shape is very rectangular and linear, this curving design adds refined grace.

Even though the cabinetry is the focal point of the study, at the touch of a button, it doubles as extra sleeping space with a Murphy bed ingeniously hidden inside. Diane Hasso from FauxReal made the walls of the half bath a work of art with a screened paint technique and nailhead details. Laura continued the theme with an abalone sink drain trimmed with nailheads.

Much of the artwork throughout the home gives a subtle nod to the beach — like the framed collection of vintage postcards and the impressionist-like beach scenes — but none of the overtly nautical elements that can seem so heavy-handed in a beach cottage.

The horizontal design of the home intentionally frames its biggest asset: Lake Michigan. There are many places throughout the home that keep its residents visually in touch with the lake.

Although the cabinetry is the focal point of the study, at the touch of a button, it doubles as extra sleeping space with a Murphy bed ingeniously hidden inside.

The open great room and kitchen allow for ease with entertaining and optimal views of the lake from every vantage point.

The porch is one of the owner’s favorite features. Nana Walls open to bring the outdoors inside, while radiant-heated, bluestone tile floors from Johnson Carpet and a twosided, planked-poured cement fireplace make it an all-season space.

“Everyone wants their cottage to capture the water, and we were very successful with this design,” Doug noted.

A Moroccan-influenced full-length mirror marks the entrance to the owners' bedroom wing. The bedroom is bordered by sand-colored grasscloth wallpaper and wainscoting panels. Mirrors flank the dressing room area which leads into a bathroom with porcelain herringbone tile, custom-built cabinets, lots of natural light, and as the centerpiece, a lighting fixture with graceful shell “tentacles.” The owner mentioned how receptive her team was during the building process. “The outside structure never changed but we rearranged a few rooms once we got going. Laura or Doug would have a bright idea to improve something and we’d discuss it and then act on it. That was one of the things we really enjoyed about this experience, nothing was set in stone until it made sense and everyone was happy!

“When we get out to the cottage it’s pure joy and relaxation. Laura and Douglas together created a home that fits our family so well … it feels like we’ve lived there forever. There are so many

touches

Capturing all the many details that create such a cohesive look is no small task. “I lived and breathed this home for six months,” said Laura. “Every product in that house was hand-selected by me. I think some people believe that a designer just strategically places a few pillows and decorative items around the home. The truth is that I hand-picked every panel, tile, lighting fixture, countertop, finish, paint color, artwork, and piece of furniture. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful client who had confidence in my ability to fill their home with things they loved!”

Doug described his unique approach to design: “We design architecture that reflects each client. We don’t just take an existing plan and modify it and we don’t have a ‘look;’ we immerse ourselves in what appeals to our client. We have each client take a Lifestyle Study that questions how they perceive they will live in the home. From that, we schematically design from their lifestyle, scan the walls up, and create the visual merchandising.

“We don’t put something in just because we thought it would look cool. If it fits the home, we give it a fresh look.”
that the average home builder would never think of and this duo did it all for us.”

“That’s Laura’s genius: what I design, she makes appealing. I dig into what elements would and should be used in the home from a historical perspective, and she gives it that fresh look,” he added.

Doug’s design process has also evolved after 30 years of building. “Ten years ago, I turned my 16 penny nail into a pencil. I used to sketch on the drywall for clients. Now we pre-design a home before we start; we gather all the plans: landscape, interior architecture, site, and price before we start so there are no surprises. We’ve designed the complete project on paper; and we’ve removed the anxiety. We still leave room for that organic change that happens during construction, but we work very, very hard so that it’s appropriate for the client.

“The great room fireplace is an example of adding an historical design element but giving it our own twist and finish,” Doug continued. “We seek architectural precedence that matches the design vision of the home, and test it against what we’re doing. We don’t put something in just because we thought it would look cool. If it fits

the home, we give it a fresh look.” The fireplace has a curved design similar to the staircase with a surround of dark herringbone tile reflected in a subway pattern in the kitchen.

This client loves to entertain and share her home with everyone and the open great room and kitchen reflect that passion. When guests are coming in hungry from the beach, she sets out snacks on the waterfall granite island which gives her space to use the other island for cooking preparation.

A porthole swinging door opens into a spacious, walk-in pantry with additional countertop space and a second fridge and oven for large events. Blackboard walls are perfect for reminders and family messages.

The porch is one of the family’s favorite features. Nana Walls open to bring the outdoors inside, while radiant-heated, bluestone tile floors and a two-sided, planked-poured cement fireplace make it an all-season space.

A full shower is tucked into the garage and the laundry room just inside gives a little more real

estate for removing sand before entering the living areas. The laundry room has durable bluestone tile floors and the cabinets have a unique grasscloth texture.

Intentional design is especially apparent on the second floor. All bedrooms have access to a balcony and outdoor vista, and if someone exits a bedroom, they can see the water. A centralized, informal gathering space was designed for the kids to congregate and socialize just outside of the private suites. A library area with a long bench also provides a place for quiet reflection while gazing at the lake.

“We don’t just take an existing plan and modify it and we don’t have a ‘look;’ we immerse ourselves in what appeals to our client.”

A back staircase leads to a loft sleeping room over the garage plus a space for kids to entertain their friends. Once again, even this part of the house affords a water view from many spots.

Doug believes this Parade Home has started a new trend as “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”

and he’s seen similar styling appearing on the lakeshore. Although he and Laura received many generous offers for the home itself and the plans, they and the owners declined. Doug says, “This home was created uniquely for the client: this home on this lot. We would be happy to start fresh and design something for someone else, but we try to honor and respect what it is we developed for this owner.”

Laura first met the homeowner at her studio several years ago when she wandered in looking for a nightstand. She had opened Dwellings after being frustrated by a limited local selection and not being able to help her clients with their design needs in a prompt and efficient manner. There are now four other designers on hand to help customers with custom orders or to select creative products displayed in the studio. For the owner it was a journey from a nightstand to a complete plantation home all in the space of just a few years. “Laura is amazing,” added the owner. “She’s such a visionary and knows us well enough that she knew the right pairing for us on a builder for this project. It would be a pleasure to work with both of them again.”
