Masonry Throughout Creating Spaces You’ll Love
In the 25 years I’ve been in the industry, the most common place I have seen masonry used inside the home has been a fireplace surround. However, things are changing as of late, and interest, for many reasons, is taking these elements into new areas throughout the home. Natural elements, such as brick, stone and slate elevate a space and offer some beautiful colors, textures and emotions as we’ll touch on below.
UNIFIED GREETING. A growing design trend is adding more detail to the foyer of a home. This area is a welcome introduction and a great way to wow visitors. For example, carrying the product from the outside façade into the interior unifies the design, creating a seamless flow between the spaces. Aside from what’s on the outside, this is a great area to introduce new elements and a lovely preview of the home’s interior, really setting the tone for the unique design that is throughout the home.
CRAVING SPACES. You’ve heard of brick-fired pizza, right? Now let’s think about backsplashes, range and accents walls in kitchens and adding natural materials to bring in texture, warmth and charm. It adds so much to the space and with the variety of colors, shapes and sizes that can be done without being overpowering. These natural materials also tie in well with solid surfaces, tile and metals, creating design harmony in the space that everyone naturally congregates to.
GOING UP (OR DOWN). If your home has more than one story, the staircase becomes an opportunity to add some grand attention. Staircases are a major impact wall, where you can connect floors of your home, helping your design aesthetic move from one floor to another. It can also be considered a large form of art. Masonry is a very old and treasured art that oftentimes gets forgotten. Regardless of color choice or personal style, there are many creative options that can be used, including custom, one-of-a-kind blends.
FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD. Or any color brick you can think of. There are many thin brick options that can be used on floors, creating interest with each step, and offering a texture and color introduction. Brick is an extremely durable product that is resistant to scratches and naturally anti-slip with its texture. This natural material is also relatively low maintenance while adding a charming look to a space.
BIOPHILIC DESIGN. Did you know that in addition to being natural products, brick, stone and slate are all 100 percent recyclable? So not only does adding these elements to your home support biophilic design, bringing organic materials inside, it also means you’re being a good steward to the planet. Biophilic design has been shown to improve focus, reduce stress and enhance creativity so it is a great addition to so many areas of your home. In addition to the areas mentioned above, we have seen brick, stone and slate used as accent walls in bedrooms, home offices, bathrooms, bars, wine rooms and golf simulators.
Our showrooms have many of these products on display, we’d love to have you visit us to see what unique design ideas we can dream up for your home!

Talking with Your Partner About Money
Tips for a productive conversation
Money can often be a hard topic to bridge if you’re in a relationship. Depending on your financial situation, values and experiences with money, you and your spouse or significant other may not always be on the same page when it comes to spending, saving and investing. In some cases, this disconnect may even be a source of tension between partners.
As a financial advisor who has worked with hundreds of couples, I want you to know that communication is key – and it usually gets easier with practice. If you’ve found yourself avoiding the subject of money with your spouse or partner, keep these tips in mind to open up a productive and ongoing conversation that will help you work toward your shared goals for the future.
Prioritize putting a plan in place. Make it a priority to discuss the important financial aspects of your lives and put a financial and estate plan in place. If you’ve put planning on the back burner, you’re not alone. The Ameriprise Couples, Money & Retirement study found that over half (52%) of couples surveyed did not have an estate plan, and 41% did not have a financial plan in place. Delaying the conversation can impede future goals and your ability to navigate potential unexpected situations.
To get started, pick a mutually agreed upon time to sit down when you can be free of distractions. Set an agenda to cover topics such as budgeting, goals, roadblocks and opportunities. Discuss what next steps for cementing a plan might be.
Respect your histories. Each person’s relationship to money is very personal. For example, some individuals who grew up with limited financial resources may adopt a scarcity mindset to protect themselves. For these individuals and others, spending may cause anxiety. On the other side of the coin, if you never had to worry about money, you may not have learned how to set limits on yourself. Selfawareness paves the way to change, just as sharing these insights with one another can enable accountability and understanding.
Be honest about financial mistakes. Share your financial challenges, or where you may have fallen short of your goals and any lessons learned. Maybe you missed a payment deadline. Or you are procrasti-
nating meeting with a tax attorney. In any case, it’s not unusual to make financial missteps now and again. Just as honesty is critical to your relationship, it’s also key to avoiding future costly errors.
Review your financial goals and priorities. What do you want to accomplish financially? Has anything changed over time? Buying a house, starting a family, sending kids to private school or college, opting for early retirement—these are the kinds of life goals that require active financial resolve and alignment with your partner. As a starting point, communicate openly about your dreams for the future and desired timeframes. If the conversation seems daunting, take heart in the fact that Ameriprise’s recent research revealed that 91% of couples surveyed say they share the same financial values. When you’re both invested in the outcome, you can support and motivate one another to reach your goals.
Work with a financial advisor. Whether you’ve already found financial harmony or want help blending your different perspectives, a financial advisor can help you increase communication and develop a plan to reach your goals. In fact, the Ameriprise research study found that 97% of couples that work with an advisor have identified ways their advisors have improved their financial wellbeing. Make it a priority to meet with or find your financial advisor together, so both of you have equal opportunity to ask questions and be involved in any decisions about your future. Find an advisor to be on your team as you work toward achieving a lifetime of financial happiness.

SET AMIDST THREE-AND-A-HALF peaceful, bucolic acres, where deer graze on vegetation and turtles crawl through the manicured lawn, you’ll find this 5,600 square-foot Scandinavian-inspired architectural delight. As you wind down the driveway through beautifully landscaped grounds, the owners’ masterpiece materializes ahead. Mid-century elements combine with commercial influences, drawn from the owners’ background in commercial building, to make a stunning first impression.
When the owners began this design-build project, they conceptualized a floor plan, then partnered with Nellie Daining for the architectural drafting and Dan Henrickson, principal architect at Henrickson Architecture, to create the schematic design. Ethan Bierlein, a current student in the University of Michigan’s architecture program, provided them with 3D renderings. “Dan did a wonderful job,” the homeowners said. “And Ethan’s CAD renderings helped us visualize our ideas and confirm that we were happy with the plans.”
Those plans included components that convey their appreciation for commercial architecture, which you see at first glance in the flat-roofed wings that flank the Scandinavian-influenced peaked center section. At either end of the home, MSI Arctic White honed marble stone accents mined in Turkey add a touch of refinement to the more industrial feel of its Bright White Stucco Sto synthetic plaster and the metal roof on the A-frame.
Cumaru wood on the covered front porch ceiling, also known as Brazilian Teak, brings warmth and depth to the exterior. Both the A-frame ceiling and the substantial beams that comprise the roof trusses are made from the rot and decay resistant Cumaru, and the entire area feels sumptuous yet welcoming. They used metal supports instead of collar ties to keep the feel open and spacious.
Step inside and you’re greeted by a light-filled home with impeccable attention to detail and innovative lighting. Smart use of color, creative textures, and refined touches are apparent throughout the main level’s open floor plan. But before the homeowners chose a single finish, they defined what they desired most.
The entire main level is welcoming and inclusive to everyone, regardless of mobility. Whether you’re crossing the threshold or walking through the 16-foot, floorto-ceiling folding glass doors at the back of the home, you won’t step up or down.
The Paloma Amity wallpaper by Harlequin in the powder room features chalky white dandelions printed with a metallic luster on a textured background. Three unique plaster pendants, handmade in Portugal, hang in a cluster, creating a smart, stylish effect above a modern glossy white floating sink by James Allen.
“What we wanted was a comfortable home, a place where everybody is welcome, and where our grandchildren have plenty of room to play,” they explained. “We wanted our home to be the hub for our family.”
Family and hospitality are at the heart of dozens of design decisions the homeowners made. One of the most significant decisions was to build the entire main level, indoor and outdoor, at zero grade, so the space would feel welcoming and inclusive to everyone, regardless of mobility. As a result, whether you’re crossing the threshold or walking through the 16-foot floor-to-ceiling folding glass doors at the back of their home, you won’t step up or down.
The accordion-style folding glass doors that line the back of the home open to an enchanting lanai, where the couple takes coffee every morning before work. The same tasteful Cumaru wood lines the ceiling as on the front porch, providing warmth and a sense of cohesion.
A sleek 6-foot DreamCast concrete linear fire table and outdoor kitchen, with double 32-inch Napoleon grills and a 24-inch Coyote beverage center, complete the tranquil space. Cambrian Black Satin Granite countertops, with Medina Noche honed porcelain tile on front and back surfaces, add understated elegance.
In the kitchen, Omega White High Gloss slab panel doors were chosen for the upper cabinetry while Omega Black was used for the island base, both from Williams Kitchen and Bath A solid walnut hood crowns the cooktop and complements the walnut cabinetry and matching refrigerator panels on the adjacent wall. The dark veining of the Unique Calacatta Black quartz island countertop and backsplash adds sophistication and depth
Beyond the fire table and outdoor kitchen area, a long, rectangular swimming pool, designed by Taradise Pools, is perfect for doing laps or playing with grandkids. The homeowners also collaborated with All Seasons Lawn Care and the result is a backyard space that emanates serenity and seclusion. When the sun sets, the home practically glows, a result of the low voltage lighting used in the landscape and the interior lighting, which seems to reflect the joy inside.
As the couple progressed with their design-build project, they made many interior decisions along the way. They’ve been thrilled with the outcome. “When I wake up here, I feel like I’m on vacation,” the homeowner said, noting that the floor-
to-ceiling windows help create that feeling. He also raved about the coffee he enjoys every morning from their hard-plumbed Miele coffee maker, purchased from Bekins Appliances. “It makes a better cup of coffee than I could ever make!”
The Miele coffee maker is joined by Jenn Aire Noir appliances, including a 6-burner gas cooktop, warmer drawer, undercounter microwave, and panel-ready column refrigerator and freezer units. As they designed their kitchen, they worked with Stacey Burke at Williams Kitchen. “She added great functional details and helped with the layout,” they explained.
They chose sleek Omega White High Gloss slab panel doors for their upper cabinetry, cooktop
base, and in their pantry. It’s a perfect backdrop for the dark veining that dances across the elegant polished Unique Calacatta Black quartz on the backsplash, stove top wall, island countertop and desk area.
The striking black veins pull in the black trim from the windows and add sophistication and depth with their dramatic contrast. Matte Black Kohler fixtures and the lower island cabinetry, in Omega black, which houses two KitchenAide dishwashers, continue the cohesiveness and modern vibe.
Nestled among the pristine white upper cabinetry, a sumptuous solid walnut hood crowns the cooktop. Walnut is also used on the cabinetry that

The bold variation between the wood and the tile integrates the room with the other spaces and creates a sense of harmony.
lines the opposing wall, as well as the panels that face the refrigerator and freezer. Making excellent use of space, the same wall includes the warming drawer and double oven.
“We chose walnut because we love it and it’s modern but with a homey feel,” said the homeowner. “Using it for the hood kept the look streamlined and tied the two materials together.”
The two-person island seating area is flanked on each side with triple-deep drawer storage, “We intentionally placed the storage area between that dishwasher and the casual dining table to make it easier to set the table and clean up after hosting friends and family,” they explained.
The couple originally considered two islands but their focus on inclusion and hospitality led them to choose a lower, black-stained custombuilt maple table that can accommodate wheelchair accessibility.
At the end of the table, a 42-inch walnut Omega cabinet, wrapped on three sides with Aurora Suede Matte Black quartz, “hugs” the table. The open front of the cabinet, facing the dining room, showcases the beautiful walnut and holds glass shelves that display glassware. Six rattan barrel chairs add texture and bring a warming vibe to the dark stone of the table.
Three oversized walnut pendant lights, sourced from Studio Accord, hang above the island,
bringing warmth to the modern space. “We waited until we’d lived in the house awhile to order them, so we were sure they fit the space,” explained the homeowner. They relied on Kerkstra Electric to make sure everything worked. “They were a great team and so helpful!”
Statement lighting is a predominant feature throughout the home. Much of it was sourced from artisans abroad. In the entryway, large bulb pendants welcome visitors. The homeowners saw some they liked but the height of their ceiling required larger-scale lighting. They researched options and found a Greek artisan who could customize the bulb size and cord length. “They’re perfect for the space,” they said.
Some of the most spectacular lighting in the home are the two delicate ribbons of shaved cherry wood veneer that spiral down from the ceiling in the dining room. The Link Chain Suspension pendants are resplendent above a glossy white marble table with stainless steel bases and are a central piece in the home.
When it’s time for drinks, the 9-foot peninsula between the dining room and kitchen serves as a bar. The cabinets are Omega White High Gloss and the countertop and waterfall are the same exquisite Aurora Suede matte black quartz used to wrap the kitchen table cabinet, which nicely ties the spaces together.
The bar features separate wine and beverage refrigerators, a Scotsman gourmet-cube ice maker, and a bank of roller drawers for dinner tableware storage. Another peninsula, on the opposite side of the room, separates the piano area from the living room, providing storage for family fun—games, blankets and technology.
Sitting atop both peninsulas are custom powdercoated black metal open shelving units that follow the slope of the ceiling. “We debated using wood, glass, or metal,” the homeowners explained. “We chose the metal to tie into our black aluminum window frames and pull the space together.”
Statement lighting is a predominant feature throughout the home and was meticulously installed by Kerkstra Electric and is showcased beautifully in the dining room. Delicate ribbons of shaved cherry wood veneer spiral down from the ceiling and capture attention. These suspension pendants are resplendent above a glossy white marble table with stainless steel bases. Nine-inch plank flooring in varying lengths by COREtec LVT in Grande-Makkah Oak is found throughout most of the home. It’s undergirded by thick cork foam to provide additional cushion and reduce noise.
Accordion-style, folding glass doors line the back of the home and open to an enchanting lanai that overlooks an inviting pool by Taradise Pools.. Cumaru wood lines the ceiling (as on the front porch), providing warmth and a sense of cohesion.
Having made that decision, they designed the shelves and hired Johnson Fabrication and Welding to build and assemble them on-site. “Johnson Fabrication also did the stair railing, exterior fencing, table base, and linear door handles on the front closet,” they said.
Above the bar, the shelves delineate homes for bottles, stemware, glass, and liquor storage. There’s also a clever pass-through built into the shelves for ease of clean up, another sign of the importance of hospitality in this home. The remainder of the shelves on each of the units display objects with visual interest and special meaning to the couple.
Opposite the kitchen, adjacent to the other peninsula and shelving, is a glossy, black Kawai baby grand piano. An airy Scandinaviandesigned light, reminiscent of a Derby hat, hangs
above. A glass railing surrounds the piano, beyond which stairs lead to the spacious lower level, which adds four more bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, a family room, game space, and a second laundry room.
The passageway from upstairs to downstairs has two distinctive elements. First, the stairs are sourced from two black walnut trees on this property that had to be cut during the build. The homeowners decided to preserve, dry, and plane the wood, and used it for their stairs.
Second, the homeowners installed marble ledge stacked stone on the stairway wall themselves, visible from both the front entry and garage entry through the glass railing. It’s both a stunning piece of art and another cohesive element, as it’s the same marble used on the exterior of the home.
Another project the couple tackled themselves is the fireplace wall in the living room. “We played around with several ideas,” they explained. They decided to install impressive 3-dimensional walnut tiles themselves, that bring texture, color, and a wonderful pattern to the space.
“Once we saw the organic wood on the wall, we thought stone next to it would be a nice complement. Subcontractors installed Obsession porcelain tile, with gorgeous veining and a velvet finish. The delicate contrast between the wood and the tile integrates the room with the other spaces and creates a sense of harmony.
The couple’s primary bedroom is also on the main floor, keeping it accessible should they eventually face mobility issues. The 9-inch planks are Grande-Makkah Oak COREtec LVT of varying lengths, which you find throughout most of
the home. It’s undergirded by thick cork foam to provide additional cushion and reduce noise. An area rug provides a cozy feel beneath their bed.
Light floods the room through the floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer an idyllic view of the pool and backyard. “We wanted to raise the blinds in the morning and be able to take in the view,” explained the homeowners. “It gives us that wonderful feeling of being connected to the outside.”
On the opposing wall, rows of picture frames display a lifetime of memories. “We wanted to commemorate so many great memories, like where he proposed, our honeymoon, and so much more. We’re reminded every day of our fun adventures,” the couple said.
Ambient bedroom light comes from an elegant Corvina Unlacquered Polished Brass chandelier
from CB2, with frosted globes, as well as modern nightstand lamps. The couple added texture and comfort by installing leather panels themselves on the wall behind the bed. “We had to custom cut the lower ones. It was a fun project!” they said.
When relaxation is in order, luxurious Carrara White Polished marble tilework in their primary bath provides a soothing backdrop for spa-like tranquility. The tiles used on the vanity-area floor also run up walls in the fully accessible "wet room,” which consists of a bathtub and shower area stacked horizontally. Gorgeous Calacatta Tumbled Marble Mosaic tiles ensure a non-slip finish on the floor.
The stately freestanding tub by Victoria & Albert and an airy, cloud-like Flos Viscontea pendant beckon you to soak stress away. “It was inspired by an Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni design that originated in 1960,” explained the homeowner.

sinks, appointed with stunning Brizo Luxe Gold plumbing fixtures, provide a modern contrast. To bring cohesion to the two spaces, the homeowners used the same countertop quartz, cut to 1.2 cm, in the three niches that face the bathtub, as well as the shower niche.
Just beyond the bath, you find custom his-andhers closets. In hers, an ethereal Luna Capiz Pendant light by CB2, made with Capiz shells by artisans in the Philippines, floats above the custom island. In addition to ample storage for clothing, shoes, and bags, hers houses the laundry room for the main level.
The main floor also boasts a guest room, with décor inspired by the pattern in the room’s “Drop it MODERN in the Flowers” wallpaper, which the homeowners felt emanated a sense of
being in a garden. They used floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the landscape and pool area and chose a black metal canopy frame to avoid impeding the view.
Pendant lights made from the same type of wood veneer as the dining room pendants hang from the ceiling, leaving the nightstands free for guests’ use. “Our guest bedroom serves the purpose of further enhancing relationships,” the homeowners explained. “We wanted guests to feel like they were on vacation here, too!”
Down the hall in the powder room, wallpaper and lighting are key elements, as well. The Paloma Amity wallpaper by Harlequin features chalky white dandelions printed with a metallic luster on a textured background. Three unique plaster pendants, handmade in Portugal, hang in
a cluster of three, creating a smart, stylish effect above a modern glossy white floating sink by James Allen.
The back hallway’s diagonal checkerboard floor tile pattern, created from Nero Marquina Black Honed Marble and Carrara White Honed Marble 12-inch by 12-inch tiles and black grout, flows into the powder room, adding an unexpected twist with a bit of fun.
And fun is what they’re after. Amidst all the beautiful finishes and custom touches, the homeowners revel in laughter with their family and friends. Hosting meals, bible studies, birthday parties – any way they can gather people together. “We love to create and invest in relationships,” they explained. They’ve created a wonderful space to do so.

Truly Inspired Trends
Express your style with flooring
How do you decide what is the best flooring choice for you? What colors are “in?” Should you pick something neutral to be safe or is that boring? These are common questions homeowners are thinking when they invest in their home. Sure, there are trends you can reference to see if what you choose is currently “in.” But, the most important factor is how your choices make you feel when you’re in your home.
Everyone has their own personal taste and style and your home is the perfect place to express this. There is a desire for living spaces to evolve into soft-spoken personal retreats. In 2024, the trend in tile design is leaning towards warmer tones in cream, beige, and grey.
Homeowners continue to strive towards creating a soothing sanctuary for their bathroom with the luxurious look of neutral-toned tiles, including large format tile and unique shapes to create patterns and custom designs. Homeowners and professional designers are increasingly attracted to medium and darker woodgrain tiles and earthtoned flooring, offering a warm, yet moody design, lending a welcoming feeling inside the home. Durable porcelain allows for the look of natural stone or wood without the maintenance of its natural counterparts.
Trends are moving away from plain gray carpets, with a nod to nostalgia that is far more inspiring. This translates into the new carpet styles and patterns we’re seeing today. Carpet trends are inspired by the demand for authentic furnishings all while contributing to a very livable space for busy families and furry pets. A bold pattern can be easily highlighted in a rug or stairway providing dimension to a room that is otherwise monochromatic.
The rustic and familiar modern farmhouse style will continue to be dominant this year. This is evolving towards warm simple design, adopting natural textures through lighter-hued, smooth-surfaced wood, laminate, and luxury vinyl. The lines are clean and the living space is broad and spacious allowing for large or intimate gatherings.
Making selections can be daunting for some while others enjoy every minute of the process. At DeGraaf Interiors, we have well trained designers and flooring professionals to help you through every step of your purchase. With two convenient retail locations in Cascade and Hudsonville you can visit our showroom and be inspired as we guide you through your options. IIn the early 1900s, the Lake Michigan Shoreline became the summer playground for Chicagoans seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of sweltering city life. At that time, travelers would venture north on a narrow highway today referred to nostalgically as the “Old Road.”
Its name changes as one heads north, from the Red Arrow Highway near St. Joe to the Blue Star Highway from Coloma to Holland, but today, most call this path Lake Shore Drive, a name, in theory, that is an extension of the world famous road in the Windy City. While I-94 and I-I96, completed in the 1960s, are now the speedier chosen Interstate highways north, Lake Shore Drive remains the slower, scenic route as it parallels Lake Michigan often giving glimpses of lakeshore waterfronts, parklands and beaches as it meanders up the coast skirting river mouth cities like Saugatuck and Holland on its journey.
Today, Michigan’s legendary Lake Shore Drive has become the address of prime real estate where palatial compounds are either renovated or created. Cosmopolitan Home Magazine’s “Best of Spring” recognition for 2024, annually given during the popular summer Parade of Homes season, is one of these properties. The custom home, really more of a compound, was built on a 6-acre site that includes an existing substantial cottage perched on the immediate bluff a few steps up from the beach.
The owner, who hails from the Greater Chicago Area, enlisted contractor Justin Schutmaat of Justin Schutmaat Builders, one of West Michigan lakeshore’s premier construction companies, to make her Lake Shore Drive dream home a reality.
“I was originally looking for a second home that could accommodate large family gatherings,” shared the owner. “We were feeling limited in terms of travel by the pandemic, so decided to aim for a place within a short drive from Chicago. We found this beautiful, wooded, 6-acre lot with a wide lawn and private beach. We like the existing cottage, but it wasn’t big enough to accommodate a crowd ... So, I immediately started to explore adding another house on the property ... we began to think about creating a family compound that would meet the needs of multiple generations.”
Lakeshore LIVING
ON THE “OLD ROAD”
The cabin’s board and batten siding from Overisel Lumber is painted an iron ore tone. The landscaping is tastefully done in a minimal way with ground cover and natural stone walking paths all designed to enhance the surrounding natural flora. Cedar eaves and accents, as well as natural stone walls, installed by V&V Masonry, foster an ageless motif.
While a shirttail relative fondly remembers summering along Lake Michigan as a child, as new residents, the area is a welcome adventure. They love exploring the small town art galleries, restaurants, breweries and orchards, yet treasure the privacy of their scenic tract that is set back on a long drive, unnoticed from the road. “It is still the quiet natural beauty that is the primary draw for me,” said the owner. “Watching grandkids collect pine cones, dig in the garden and play in the sand is the best.”
Serendipitously, soon after the initial purchase, the stairs down from the bluff to the beach were deemed unsafe and in need of immediate attention. Essentially by chance, Justin Schutmaat Builders was hired for the task. The experience was a positive one finding Justin incredibly responsive; he immediately scheduled them on his spring calendar in time for the upcoming summer season. “We loved working with him and were so impressed with the quality of the new staircase that we never even thought about interviewing another contractor. We were confident he was the right person to also help us with the existing house renovations and our plans for additional construction.”
“What started as a repair led to the remodel of the existing cottage and then the new construction,” said Schutmaat. “This was the best homeowner I’ve ever worked with through the

construction process. She was very relaxed, yet able to make solid decisions with great taste. She really understood the process and worked well with us along the way.”
In 2011, Schutmaat founded Justin Schutmaat Builders (JSB) after honing his craftsmanship in the carpentry trade for 14 years. Adding degrees in business management and construction to these years of hands-on experience, Justin’s passion to provide his customers high-end custom homes along West Michigan’s lakeshore grew. Over the years Justin has put together a team of tradesmen and trusted professionals to assure his clients realize a great building experience through clear communication, personable expertise and guaranteed attention to detail resulting in the beautiful home of their dreams that will stand the test of time.
During the process, Schutmaat takes extra time to focus on client’s daily routines assuring his design will be a practical means of support for their lifestyle. He vows to give clients complete control of every design aspect allowing them to lean into his expertise for guidance during their homebuilding journey.
The owners’ initial intuition proved correct, and they found real joy in working with Justin.
Communication was a huge factor given the owners were often out of town. Their in-person meetings were a plus, but Justin’s personal attention and quick responses to texts, emails and phone calls were highly valued. Not only was the JSB crew found to be quite talented, but Schutmaat’s ability to garner the area’s best subcontractors was paramount. “We came to appreciate the skilled artisans in this area of the country. The carpenters, masons, painters, electricians, landscapers who all had a hand in this building project were extremely professional and took great pride in their work.” The entire project team worked in harmony, each willing to make suggestions, tweaking the original design augmenting and enhancing the finished project.
In the first phases of the project, Justin suggested his clients consider two trusted area professionals to complete his extended project team, architect Ed Zwyghuisen, owner of Gen 1 Architectural Group and interior designer Amanda Huizenga, owner of Amanda Christine Design. This close knit West Michigan trio combined to create their client’s destination dream home.
Gen 1 Architectural Group, a well known firm located in West Michigan for over 30 years, takes great pride in their quality and integrity
standards used in creating visually stunning spaces that are both functional and sustainable. They work closely with clients to understand their lifestyle needs every step of the way, collaborating to tailor one-of-a-kind solutions to exceed expectations. Handing over a design plan is just the beginning, Gen 1 vows to give professional guidance through every phase of construction keeping the budgetary bottomline in mind.
Gen 1’s trademark of Green Home Ethos, incorporated into every design and build process, allows for environmentally friendly choices utilizing a unique set of criteria to maximize efficiency. The ultimate goal is to measurably reduce a home’s environmental impact. The home features two electric car charging hook-ups in the garage, and the highest energy efficiency ratings on appliances and mechanical systems.
“I’ve worked with Ed in the past on a number of projects,” said Schutmaat. “What sets him apart is his artistic skills he applies to his development process. He came up with an avenue fitting the home perfectly for a family vacation getaway or a full time residence.”
Of particular importance to the owners was for the home to be connected and blended with the

natural dune landscape. While the lower existing cottage on the open windward foredune has a traditional feel, the new structures referred to as “The Cabin'' and adjacent “Yoga Barn” are set in the woods, nudging the crest of the densely wooded slip face leeward hind dune facing the Big Lake.
Zwyghuisen (Ed Z), who’s comfortable using his sense of humor in his design process, states unequivocally that it was wonderful working with the owner. In fact, he went on to say, agreeing with Schutmaat’s earlier sentiments, she was one of his easiest clients on a custom project. “Up front, she had very solid ideas entering our process. It was clear from the start what needed to be incorporated in the home including the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, courtyard and large gathering spaces. There was no guesswork. Beyond that it was clear how all of those areas were to be used; it was clear and concise which made the design easy.”
The client was adamant that the natural site was to be minimally disturbed. Despite having some interesting topography including a ravine to potentially work with for the building envelope, a flat spot for the one level home was identified. Ed stressed, “The project called for a marriage between the site and home to create a seamless sense of harmony with the space. We looked at the home being an entity unto itself. No dirt was really moved; we worked with what we were given.” The orientation was adjusted to preserve a 150 year patriarchal oak tree on the northeast corner of the home to not only ground the landscaping and footpaths, but create beautiful indoor views. “It was there, and we saved it. It’s a comfort that the tree is still with us.”
As far as the architectural style of the home, Ed Z confessed that there is none. “It’s truly a unique custom home, and the style is really the

client’s style. It was designed to meet the client’s requests and requirements. It doesn’t feel like a craftsman, rustic lodge, ranch or lake house, with its clean, crisp look it is just unique.”
Having partnered on past projects, Ed was excited to work once again with Amanda Huizenga. “Amanda makes the smoothest transition from my plans to applying the details, like a perfect color palette, giving owners what they want. She marries it all together with the end result of making good design, superior.”
Amanda emphatically agreed with Ed’s architectural assessment of the project, “As much as I should know exactly what the style is I would say a good blend ... mixing some modern yet traditional elements to keep it fresh. I like my projects to not be a certain total look or theme — I like them to be more artistically pulled together with a blend of styles so that they are each truly unique and one of a kind!”
Amanda has always been an artist at heart. Her intrinsic creative flair, bolstered by a degree in interior design from Kendall College of Art and
Design, has, in the past decade, enabled her to establish a unique, timeless signature design aesthetic. Her areas of expertise range from building systems and codes to an eye for texture and surfaces which allows guidance for clients through the entire building cycle from initial CAD concepts to the sourcing of final accessories. Amanda’s technical “know-how” is fostered by her personal attributes of a traditional strong work ethic, openness to new inspiration, detailed vision and pleasant personality which allows her fresh approach in design to be a direct reflection of the clients’ lifestyles and personalities. A notable flair is her willingness to scout for that perfect detail, often melding vintage and new to create a cohesive, comfortable warmth in the home’s interior.
To accomplish the owner's needs in a one level of living, Ed playfully admitted to utilizing some “tricks of design” in his creativity. Second spaces for mechanical elements led him to fully utilize a recessed level below and upper attic truss space to house HVAC and plumbing rather than infringing on the living area. Also, Universal Design elements such as zero step flat entries, adequate doorways and bedroom space, along with bathrooms that can be easily modified were incorporated. “While not a full uni-

The space is done in calming neutral tones with natural light filtering through multiple windows. A simple vaulted ceiling is melded with a floating white globe light fixture. The bath is an oasis featuring a custom wooden vanity and walk in shower.
As a bonus, a separated, quiet room can serve as a bunkhouse for the little ones, especially at nap time. All bedrooms have access to multiple private outdoor sitting areas.
The central outdoor gathering area unifies the exterior layout. The custom cement patio features an outdoor fireplace coordinated with a rock pony wall cooking area both installed by V&V Masonry. Space allows for plenty of relaxed seating.
Across the central patio, the Yoga Barn’s interior is a continuation of the Cabin. Looking through the front glass wall, the Barn features more custom beams with a vaulted ceiling. The continuation of the hardwood floors repeats the cohesive feel. With space for 16 yoga mats and a myriad of exercise equipment, the Barn is the ideal workout facility.
The inclusion of these chic outdoor structures is a growing trend in Michigan given they can take inclement weather out of the mix for outdoor gatherings.
versal layout, it was designed for day to day living, essentially for 99 percent of people to use for life. If there is a ‘hiccup’ in life, with this home you never need to answer ‘how?’ It’s been thought about up front; there would be no need for a major upgrade.”
To harmonize with the site, the design uses natural colors and materials. The single story cabin’s board and batten siding is painted an appropriate iron ore tone (every creative Michigan kid who’s worth his “mustard’ on a Grand Haven Pronto Pup, knows there’s often a faint line of iron ore where the water laps the sand and can be cleverly proven with a magnet).
The landscaping is also tastefully done in a minimal way with ground cover and natural, whimsical stone walking paths all designed to enhance rather than compete with the surrounding natural flora. Cedar eaves and accents, as well as natural stone facing and flanking walls, foster a mellow, ageless motif.
“In the summer we are almost completely surrounded with greenery, so it appears the structures are truly tucked into the woods,” said the owner. “As the landscaping matures and the exterior
materials weather in the years to come, I think the house will blend even more into the site.”
On the exterior, eyes are drawn to a rustic portico with stone columns and wood beaming supporting the muted metal-clad, peaked roof. The calming outdoors is pulled indoors through the custom, horizontally slotted front door with the continued use of the natural elements. Stonework, vaulted beams, flooring, tile and stone countertops seamlessly aid in the transition.
Amanda noted, “I helped finalize a lot of the exterior materials with the owner ... the stone was a big inspiration for us. We selected it and loved the texture of it so much that we wanted to play into it being on the exterior surfaces as well as relate to pulling it into the interior so that it really set the stage for us.”
Floor-to-ceiling glass walls, made up of large windows and folding glass doors on both the cabin and barn, face each other looking over the central outdoor gathering area unifying the exterior layout. The custom cement patio is landscaped with a natural feel featuring a stone, outdoor fireplace coordinated with a rock pony
wall cooking area and elevated stone garden planter. Space allows for plenty of relaxed seating perfect for outdoor living.
Given the owner was unfamiliar with the area, she relied on not only Amanda’s original interior drawings and layouts for each room, but also her close relationships with the best vendors to source quality materials. Tile, cabinet hardware, carpets and custom furniture were all procured locally along the West Michigan lakeshore. The owner also noted that Amanda closely listened to their preferences while applying valuable professional experience to expand the design vision. This collaboration amounted to several shopping quests to find the perfect piece to finish the look.
To say the interior design is unique is an understatement. There are the little things that fit the family’s lifestyle like the doggie wash station for their beloved pets and the den that doubles as a playroom with an arts and crafts area for the grandkids. The attention to detail creatively includes adequate storage space throughout the floorplan, solid lodge style doors, transom windows, textured tile bathroom walls, built-in bookcases, a cabinet shield in the entry to the primary bathroom and custom laundry drying rack. However, the defining feature of the home are the hand crafted beams of the great room.
The arched, raw wood, open beam structures placed in the vaulted ceiling spanning from wall to wall of the main living area are actually a continuance of the natural wooden beams introduced on the inviting front entry. Ed designed the custom dimensional Douglas Fir beams, which took 24 weeks to arrive, dramatically setting the tone for the entire spacious room.
Offsetting black steel beam framing straps coordinate with black window frames, railings, pendant lighting elements and kitchen fixtures.
Ed explained, “The initial ideas were sourced from my mind, fitting the owner’s wishes for the main living area. Once the owner saw them on my 3D plan, we agreed to this beautiful style that is cool and stunning, unique to this house only.”
“Ed’s beams were a big surprise and were a huge part of the whole process,” said Justin. “The main room set the stage for the entire home. Right from the start, Ed’s base design was the footprint, Amanda then stepped in to apply the interior and exterior finishes.”
The owner offered, “Once the beams were lifted into place the structure started to be real for me. Everything else seemed to be built around them. We wanted our great room to be big enough for a crowd but not feel cavernous and cold. The beams made that vision a reality.”
Upon entry into the foyer visitors are greeted with a layout that is designed for entertaining. Under those massive beams, the great hall first presents as a comfortable gathering space centered on a fireplace backing its outdoor counterpart. Flanking the chimney front are the floor-to-ceiling glass walls looking out to the Barn with access to the central patio. Light colored wide plank hardwood floors fittingly run throughout the space.
The kitchen is set off by a dramatic, rough stone wall behind the cabinetry identifying it as the hub of the home adding warmth and interest. A whitewashed island with seating for six is lit with an elongated bar pendant light fixture. The island’s coastal look is juxtaposed by the dark, tall cabinetry. Off to the side, once again identified by beam work, is a handy mixology station with an alluring herringbone backsplash and open shelving.
Amanda revealed, “I love the mix of the design when you combine hard, clean lines with the organic softness of arches.” One of the challenges was to match the scale of the cabinetry with the soaring vaulted ceilings. Another fun element was the creation of the finish of the kitchen island.
“The owner loved the saluted oak look of the coffee table so ... Van Enk Woodcrafters used the sample to create the custom finish. Van Enk makes their cabinets like furniture. Such good quality and the finishes are so unique, like velvet!”
The family loves to cook together with the mantra of “The More the Merrier,” so enough space was needed for multiple culinarians. Cohesiveness is provided by slick, organically rich quartzite countertops that have just a splash of a rust colored patina allowing for multiple workstations. The countertop stone is repeated as the backsplash and trim on the custom range hood. Amanda added, “The countertops are beauty and art straight from the earth.”
The extended family, during a recent celebration, dined comfortably as a group of 21. The kitchen is flanked for these epic gatherings by a dedicated dining room offset with its own matching beams on a lateral vaulted ceiling. An ornate lighting fixture subtly mimics that of the kitchen, while once again, multiple windows add ambient light and a wooded backdrop.
Ed admitted that merging the four criss-cross beam work in the middle of the room was a bit of a challenge, but essential to hint at segmentation of the space. For him it was a, “behindthe-scenes labor of love.”
A back hallway from the kitchen leads to the quiet bedroom wing consisting of two corner guestrooms, a full bath, a private bedroom with a half bath and the primary suite. As a bonus, a separated, quiet room can serve as a bunkhouse for the little ones, especially at nap time.
The primary serves as the owner’s soothing sanctuary. The space is done in calming neutral tones lit with natural light filtering through multiple windows. A simple vaulted ceiling is melded with a dreamy, floating white globe light fixture. A handy built-in desk tucked off to one side and ample closet on the other wall complete the design. The bath is an oasis featuring a custom wooden vanity and walk in shower.
Amanda loves a focal point as you walk into the bathroom. “We loved the total frame look of
the linen cabinet with the painted frames mixed with the stained inner panel. It really created a unique artwork look for the cabinet!”
The hallway yields to a tiled mudroom entry from the spacious garage. The laundry, small bath with shower and mechanical room are conveniently placed nearby.
Across the central patio, the Yoga Barn’s interior is a continuation of the Cabin. Looking through the front glass wall, the Barn features, once again, the magnificent beams with a vaulted ceiling. The continuation of the hardwood floors makes it is the perfect space for rambunctious children in the winter months, movie nights and year round exercise. The Barn is a state-of-the-art workout facility with space for 16 yoga mats and a myriad of exercise equipment. Other amenities include a half bath and built-in kitchenette. An open stairway leads to a cozy loft — a perfect spot to hang out or spend the night. A westward facing overlook deck, accessible from the loft, leaves guests awed, standing at treetop level of the crest of the downward dune slope looking out toward the Big Lake on the horizon.
In summarizing the entire project, Amanda reflected, “I think this style is such a unique blend of materials. I think the play on textures is so warm and inviting. This is also a style a lot of different ages can appreciate. Also, what’s better than Lake Michigan so close while being in a setting in the woods?”
As far as challenges, Justin joked, “There was no sweating for more than an hour. The process was as seamless as you can get for the size of the home. I hope to repeat with this group again ... Everyone stayed in their lanes yet were flexible.”
Schutmaat considers it a great honor to be recognized as Cosmopolitan Home’s “Best of Spring” for 2024. “This is our first featured home. It was a group effort to bring this project to fruition. Hands down our main goal was to make the homeowner happy. We’re proud we did that!” Additionally, the project was awarded “Best Site Harmony” by this spring’s Parade of Homes.
Lake Shore Drive, evolving endlessly with time, yet the legends of the “Old Road” live on ... new homes, new styles, new generations, new memories.
