Are You and Your Spouse on The Same Page About Retirement?

RETIREMENT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT financial goals for many married couples. It’s something you may dream about and work hard to reach. But, even if you feel like you are on track in terms of meeting your financial objectives, there is an equally important factor to consider – are you both on the same page about your vision and plans for retirement?

For example, what if your ideal experience in retirement is to travel, but your spouse is looking to stay local to be near family. Have conversations in advance of retirement to make sure you and your spouse are on the same page.

PLANNING IS CRITICAL The years leading up to retirement are an important time to compare their ideas and see if there are any obvious conflicts. Among the different topics to address:

TRY TO FIND MIDDLE GROUND Don’t be alarmed if you and your spouse don’t have the exact same idea of how retirement should work for you. It isn’t unusual. What’s important is finding ways to come to an agreement. That may mean each side has to give a little to make it work.

Flexibility is also key. Once the reality of retirement sets in, either person’s viewpoint might change and that could affect your decisions. Be prepared for the potential that a medical event could alter your plans, as this is more likely to be a factor as you grow older.

Your financial circumstances are also always a consideration. Have a discussion with your financial advisor about your retirement plans and try to have an agreed-upon strategy in place before you wrap up your working years. ❂

•When you plan to retire – if one spouse wants to work longer than the other, that may be fine if the spouse who retires earlier can pursue other activities in the interim. But if your plans are dependent on being together, you’ll want to come to an agreement on when your actual retirement together will begin.

•Where you plan to live – this is a critical issue that requires a mutual understanding. Will you stay in your current home or geographic location? Do you plan to spend winters in a warmer climate? What are your thoughts on living abroad? Make sure you have a plan that works for both of you.

•Your vision of a retirement lifestyle – what will keep you occupied in retirement? Are there activities that you will both enjoy, or are you fine with pursuing aspects of retirement independently? The more you define this in advance, the better prepared you’ll be.

Elevating Flavor with guilt-free olives

TACO-STUFFED SPAGHETTI SQUASH Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 50 minutes Servings: 4

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle includes a variety of commitments, from exercising to eating right. However, serving up healthy meals doesn’t have to be boring.

From earthy and nutty to rich and fruity, olives can add a hearty and flavorful punch to just about any dish, including soups, salads and main courses. Plus, they are cholesterol-free, high in “good fats” and low in carbohydrates and calories, making them an ideal ingredient for keto, Mediterranean and paleo diets.

Whether they help elevate dishes like Taco-Stuffed Spaghetti Squash and Baked Eggs Puttanesca or are simply enjoyed as a snack, olives are a guilt-free food to ensure your healthy mealtime is anything but boring.

2 spaghetti squash (2 pounds each) 6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 teaspoon salt, plus additional to taste, divided pepper, to taste 1pound ground chicken 1 cup diced red onion, divided 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes 1 teaspoon cumin 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 can (2 1/4 ounces) black ripe sliced olives 1 lime, juice only 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese 1 avocado, diced 1 large tomato, diced 1 jalapeno, minced 1/2 cup black ripe medium olives 1 lime, wedged Heat oven to 400 F. In microwave, cook one whole squash 3 minutes. Repeat with second squash. Cut each in half and scrape out seeds. Drizzle 1 teaspoon oil over each half and rub around until insides are coated. Sprinkle each with salt and pepper, to taste; place on parchment-lined baking sheet center down to lay flat. Bake 50 minutes.

Heat large saute pan over medium-high heat.

Put 2 teaspoons oil in pan then chicken, 3/4 cup onion and garlic. Cook until chicken is cooked through.

Add tomatoes, cumin, chili powder and remaining salt; stir to combine. Bring mixture to boil and cook, uncovered, 15 minutes to reduce liquid, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat. Stir in sliced olives and lime juice.

When squash is cooked, scrape insides with fork to release from edge then create nest.

Put 1/4 of chicken mixture and 1/4 cup cheese in each squash half.

Bake 5 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Top with avocado, diced tomatoes, remaining onions, jalapeno, whole olives and lime wedges.

BAKED EGGS PUTTANESCA Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Servings: 4-6 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 3 anchovy filets, chopped 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 can (35 ounces) chopped tomatoes 2 tablespoons capers, drained 1/3 cup pitted Kalamata olives, drained and halved salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 1/2 cups chopped kale 6 eggs Heat oven to 400 F. In non-reactive saucepan over medium-high heat, warm olive oil. Add onion and saute, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 6 minutes.

Add garlic, anchovies and red pepper flakes; cook 1 minute. Stir in tomato paste then add chopped tomatoes with juices, capers and olives.

Bring to boil then reduce heat to low. Simmer, stirring occasionally, 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Transfer puttanesca sauce to 9-by-13-by-2inch baking dish and spread to cover bottom.

Stir in kale then, using wooden spoon, make six wells. Crack one egg into each well and season yolks with salt and pepper, to taste.

Transfer to oven and cook until white is set and yellow is cooked to preference, 12-16 minutes. Spoon into bowls and serve. ❂

Promise Kept

It is said the greatest gifts a parent can give to their child are roots and wings: the knowledge of home that runs deep into the soil, but also the freedom to explore all the world has to offer. Dan Meyaard received this in spades from his father and in exchange, promised to return to farm the family land upon retirement.

Most people don’t typically take up farming when they retire, but as Fred Rogers noted, “Often when you think you’re at the end of something, you’re at the beginning of something else.”

For Dan and his wife Ann Marie, there were compelling reasons in addition to the promise. “One is the pleasure of raising crops,” explained Dan, “the other is maintaining an active, busy lifestyle that promotes health.”

The land has been in the Meyaard family for almost 90 years and Dan’s grandfather and father both worked at VerHage Motor Sales in Hudsonville; as a side career, they raised vegetables in the muck.

Muck, for the uninitiated, is the pitch-black, fertile soil remaining after the Grand River altered course. Decades later, the muck still yields long-buried secrets: “every time we plow, we pull out a wagon load of tree roots and sometimes arrowheads and antlers,” said Dan.

The home’s exterior is a very graphic contrast of white with dark window cladding. The white board and batten siding is warmed by darkstained garage doors and a porch ceiling soffit.

With inspiration from old, Maine farmhouses, the full wraparound porch works especially well with the oversized windows. Exterior elements were selected for durability including the oversized onion lights that were historically manufactured to withstand nor’easter blows.

As kids, Dan and his brother were responsible for growing and picking cucumbers for a highend pickle factory. Dan earned his way through college raising leek which he cleaned and packed off to Chicago and Detroit markets.

Although Dan and Ann Marie hailed from opposite sides of the state, their career challenges eventually brought them to the same company in Maine where they met. Ann Marie loved living in Maine, but knew her destiny was to build a farmhouse in Michigan, so she sought design inspiration from old Maine farmhouses.

Building remotely is challenging enough, but this project required a tear-down of Dan’s parent’s 1960s house, a barn raising, and new home construction for structures that they hope will be around for the next century.

Ann Marie selected Wayne Visbeen of Visbeen Architects to outline the vision for these structures. She stated, “Visbeen Architects gave us our big wraparound porch which was very important to us; and designed it in such a way that it’s aesthetically pleasing.” Visbeen also made introduc-

tions to several different builders, but it was Doug Sumner of Douglas Sumner Builder, Inc. who won her over.

Doug Sumner doesn’t have a polished website portfolio or a sales and marketing team; he is a true custom builder with a strong team of craftsmen. “I was really impressed because it was such a customer-focused experience,” explained Ann Marie. “Doug really spent a lot of time educating me on how he and his team work; taking me to different projects to reveal the skill level of the finished product; and personally introducing me to his team.”

“Doug’s team are tremendous carpenters and experts,” added Dan. “There’s a lot of specialty work that was done and they truly demonstrated their craft.”

Timing was critical so much of the barn and home had to be designed and built on the fly.

Doug recommended the seasoned expertise of Lynn Hollander Design to coordinate the myriad project details as the Meyaards needed to manage so many decisions remotely.

The kitchen, with cabinetry from Tru Kitchens, is the industrious heart of this home. As a working farm kitchen, it has to be very functional yet, it’s complemented with elements that are pleasing to the eye. Blue glaze subway tile and custom tile work complement the quartz counters from Great Lakes Granite Works. Simple seeded glass pendants, from Kendall Lighting, above the island don’t detract from the outdoor view.

Lynn explained, “Although a remote build with this level of custom design detailing can be tricky, it is not an unusual demand for my firm. We find that constant communication and exchange of ideas results in a seamless collaboration that ultimately realizes the client’s style and esthetics.”

They hit an immediate obstacle. Two months before they applied for planning zoning, their land was rezoned to residential. After the dust settled and variances were filed, the Meyaards were ready to raise a barn.

“I can easily have shiny object syndrome and Lynn kept me honest,” said Ann Marie. “We worked really well together and Lynn made the process easier with suggestions that were both pretty and functional, plus she introduced me to resources that I would not have been able to access on my own.”

Notably, the Kalamazoo Stove Company was one of the best-known trademarks in the nation for 50 years. It closed its doors in 1952 because their wood or coal-powered stoves lost favor with the new industry direction for gas or electric models.

Floor-to-ceiling windows in the main-floor owners’ bedroom provide a sweeping view of the land they love. The en suite bathroom is an escape to luxury after a long day working the farm.

Upstairs, guest rooms reveal more farmhouse style and allow overnight visitors a comfortable stay. The rooms can be closed off from the house when not in use but also to afford privacy to visiting family.

This is a hard-working farm and an ingenious muck room is accessible from the backyard and garage. This is a common feature in coal miner’s homes and was inspired by Ann Marie’s grandfather who mined coal in Pennsylvania. Outfitted with a washer, dryer, and shower, Dan can leave the day’s dirt behind.

It’s so rare to have a client that really appreciates this level of interior design. Window treatments, draperies, and accessories are just another level of texture and detail that I think balances things,” noted Lynn.

An oval window, known as an oeil-de-boeuf or “ox’s eye,” creates a strong punctuation mark in an otherwise ordinary space while bringing in additional light.

“Randy Nichols and Ron Bolthouse are both incredibly talented carpenters and deserve mention for their skill and professionalism,” exclaimed Dan.

The landscaping was designed to enhance the natural beauty of the land and make it user-friendly for a couple that is outside at great length. With so much family history attached to the property, the homeowner was an integral part of the design.

baseboard, and ceiling cornice. We would send it off to Maine or if Ann Marie was coming to town, we’d have the samples ready for approval.”

The kitchen is the industrious heart of this home.

“We cook and process a lot of vegetables from the farm, so it had to be very functional and yet, all these delightful little elements that Lynn added are so pleasing to the eye. It gives me joy while I’m working hard,” said Ann Marie.

“I love lighting,” said Lynn. “It’s one of the most important elements of a project as it’s the jewelry that completes a room.”

“Their connection to that place in essence helped define what we were doing.

We never really set down a plan although we had guiding principles in mind.”

Although this home is new construction, it is filled with generations of memories and Ann Marie loves that almost every room holds a memento relating to the family’s history. In the library, for example, Ann Marie found old maps of places where the couple has lived: Italy for her family; Wales and Ireland where Dan lived and worked; and Maine where their story began.

This spring, Dan hopes to renew his apiary hobby. He created a United Way fundraiser called “A Season of Beekeeping” to help dispel fear around these powerhouse pollinators.

Children are given their own frame to start a new hive and in the fall, they harvest the honey and leave with a jar of honey.

To recognize the contribution of these industrious insects to the farm’s ecosystem, Lynn hired Matt Kolenda of Kolenda Art Glass who created custom glass inserts in the cabinet doors of the downstairs wet bar. They feature bees flying throughout the golden honeycomb glass. Matt also created the wire mesh glass panels in the kitchen’s upper cabinetry.

One of the most important spaces of the house is the outdoors, and with Dirk DeWitt of DeWitt Landscape and Design, LLC, Dan found someone who understood muck. Dirk is a small operator with a customer-focused crew that shares his “get me dirty and get me out there” hands-on approach. “Dan is very much the same way; it’s almost a contest when we’re around each other to see who is the dirtiest,” he laughed.

“The view to the east is wide-open and dramatic,” Dirk continued “it’s just a phenomenal piece of land, so we designed the landscaping to enhance the natural beauty and make it user-friendly for a couple who’s outside all the time. There was so much family history in the land and special significance to many trees that Dan had planted with his father.

“The barn was already in place so it was a bit of a challenging tight fit to work around that structure and protect the roots of the mature trees from the heavy equipment. Some of those boulders in the rock wall are four tons, so we had to move them with a crane.”

Dirk appreciated the easy collaboration with the couple. “Their connection to that place in essence helped define what we were doing. We never really set down a plan although we had guiding principles in mind. To have that creative freedom is a wonderful thing.”

Dirk has an overarching philosophy he brings to each project. “The more I’m outside, the more I’m inspired by nature. I try to work with what exists rather than completely alter the natural setting. It’s my job to share that excitement with my clients so they want to be outdoors interacting with that living space.”

To bring the history of the home full-circle, stones from the original family home were incorporated into the back patio fireplace and also in the barn.

The Future of 21st Century Kitchens Functional, Beautiful, Sustainable

by Jennifer Butler Design Kitchen design is continually changing. How we use our kitchens is driven by the way we live in our homes. As interior designers, we are constantly revisiting how to improve the functionality of a home, especially in a central space like the kitchen.

We research how lives are influenced by food culture, technology, and sustainability. Kitchens of the future aren't as far off as they sound. As we look forward to 2020, beyond the design “trends” and fads, here is what we know will become integral to the experience of cooking and entertaining in the “heart of the home.”

A MORE CENTRAL HUB FOR THE HOME. Only 100 years ago, heating sources in the kitchen were limited to open fires, and water was retrieved from wells. Cooking indoors was a smoky, noisy, smelly endeavor, banishing kitchens to a remote, concealed area.

Advancements in ventilation, insulation, refrigeration and heating dramatically changed the architecture of kitchens, thrusting them into central areas of the home. Today they are the focus of architectural evolution, and are more significant to our homes than ever.

COOKING IS CONNECTED. Smart home connectivity is not only the future; it is now. These features save people time and money when cooking, meal planning, and grocery shopping, and seamlessly integrate with already used devices – smart phones, hubs, and many smart appliances.

Smart refrigerators can scan your grocery receipt, keep inventory, and notify you when something is low or expiring. They recommend recipes based on what you purchase, and allow you to place grocery orders. Smart ovens let you select a recipe, remotely preheat your oven, and sync with your other smart appliances accordingly. Smart worktops usher in a mindful cooking experience through interaction.

Expect to see touchscreen stovetops and smart appliances in abundance very soon.

A SWISS ARMY KITCHEN. We think kitchens are for cooking and eating, maybe entertaining, but in reality, they are major multitasking spaces. They are now family hubs for a myriad of activities of daily life. We design our custom kitchens to the unique lives of our clients, and ensure they have everything necessary to function in multiple ways.

Future kitchens will offer more flexibility and fewer fixed elements such as countertops with adjustable heights that are more accessible and usable for people of all sizes and abilities. The 2017 Silestone Institute Global Kitchen Report found that, in a survey of 842 kitchen professionals across eight countries, 87 percent said that the kitchen would become more relevant as an activity and meeting place in the future, 81.5 percent think that it will incorporate dining/living room features, 92.3 percent agree that it will be used to get together with family. Future kitchens will adapt better to this growing trend of being used as the “Swiss army knife” of the home.

A MORE SUSTAINABLE KITCHEN. Limiting waste, conservation of resources, recycling and composting are vital aspects of most kitchens now, as we realize the impacts of climate change, and work toward a better planet. The goal is a net-zero energy kitchen that produces, and does not waste a thing! Cutting edge strategies we employ include aquaponics, hydroponics, 3D printing, water filtration, indoor farming, composting and food storage.

Organic waste (food scraps) are used to create biogas, a renewable energy source of gaseous fuel that results from decomposition. Biogas could fuel a kitchen’s cooking appliances. To conserve

water, filters recycle used H2O to support hydroponics - growing plants without soil.

Central, smart, do-it-all, healthy, resourceful kitchens are the future. These evolutions in kitchen design are brought about by changes in social and emotional preferences, spatial demands, efficiencies improved through the development of technology, increased concern for well-being and health, and a growing awareness and concern about material life-cycle and energy use.

As our lifestyles continually morph to reflect changes in how we think and act, these studies, experiments and design solutions have us looking forward, and ready to implement improvements in kitchens that cater to it's new demands and dreams. And we believe every kitchen will be functional, beautiful and sustainable by design.

The hilltop site overlooks 25 acres of pristine property and offers views of Byron Center below. As you drive up to the home, concrete insets of the homeowners initials create a grand and personal entrance.

The striking exterior catches your eye by having contrasting but complementary elements. The stark contrast of black and white, with the warm tones of the cedar create a sense of balance. The modern, glass garage doors offer a sleek appeal while the traditional stone adds visual interest. All black North Star windows complement the white exterior beautifully.

Each gable is illuminated with soffit can lights so the entire house shines at night. The back has double stacked decks, both containing an outdoor fireplace.

Every area of the home, inside and out, was thought out in detail with personal touches throughout.

BUILDER: Lown Homes ARCHITECT: 42 North Architects This modern farmhouse, was built by Lown Homes and designed with 42 North Architects. Arriving to the home, the half circle drive is intentionally inviting as guests are welcomed by the beautiful front entry. The exterior of this home was specifically designed to maximize the views of the wooded surroundings of this 5-acre lot by using Marvin black fiberglass windows with sleek and modern profiles and large viewable areas.

The laundry room exterior was accented with a charcoal color and varying width siding to contrast the classic look and durable finish of the traditional Hardi board, white horizontal siding. The black architectural shingle roof nicely balances with the metal standing seam, accents and a custom build chimney cap.

The back porch and pool area were elevated to give access directly from the main floor of the home, while providing an elevated view of the surrounding landscape. Inspiration came from several Northern Michigan wineries with open, comfortable and relaxing spaces, real fireplaces and elevated views.

Accented by classic and clean landscape elements, the home’s immense attention to detail cannot be overlooked. As a “People’s Choice” favorite, the details made the difference.

made a big impression with the detailed craftsmanship, custom design, and breathtaking views this Payne Lake home offers.

As a tear down/re-build property, architect Kerry Fitzpatrick knew from the start that siting the home with regard to the sun and views was key.

Fitzpatrick says, “This was a beautiful property with proximity to the lake and great views. The original house, a four-story Aframe, was situated so that there were virtually no views of the lake. It was oriented to face in the other direction, and limited numbers and locations of windows didn’t take advantage of the natural setting. The clients knew they wanted lots of windows overlooking the water and woods. I designed the space to have a panoramic view and to bring in plentiful natural light and afford views from every room. In fact, this house probably has more glass than any home I have ever designed. We wanted it to be very open, and we achieved that goal.”

Brian Diemer of Everett’s Landscape Management worked on the Sherwood Homes project from the beginning, consulting with the builder, the architect, and, most importantly, the clients.

Diemer says, “The homeowners had some definite ideas about what they wanted. By using mostly native plants and trees, and a variety of flowering shrubs and plantings, we were able to work out a design that suited the location and the design of the home perfectly.”

He continues, “In our work, we try to mimic nature and make sure everything we do blends into the environment seamlessly.”

He continues, “The details of the landscape ensure that there are flowers, shrubs, and trees blooming from spring through fall and that the views from both inside and outside are pleasing to the eye throughout the year.”

Steps leading to the beach are at either end of the property, and the beach itself will eventually be planted with grass, while ground cover and small shrubs along with flowing plants will be used through the rest of the site.

The landscape work is almost completed. However, a particular stone needed for the retaining wall has been unavailable, and Diemer is waiting for that to arrive to fulfill the vision of the homeowner. The family spends a lot of time outside, and the landscape design will make the outdoor space appealing and inviting.

Guests were immediately drawn to the kitchen and adjoining dining area of Celebrity Builders’ 2019 Spring Parade home.

With an impressive, artistic lighting fixture above the large island, it’s clear that the space was designed as a focal point for a busy family seeking refuge and togetherness in the kitchen.

Past the island surrounding the bright white cabinetry lie almost excessively large pieces of white tile that serve as the kitchen’s backsplash.

Uncluttered by outlets, “This is just more of a clean look,” said builder Dan Vis. Adhering to code by instead installing a strip of electrical outlets beneath the cabinets, the builders maintained organized surfaces throughout the kitchen. The adjacent, walk-in pantry is complete with its own counter-space, topped with Wilsonart Pearl Just across from the island sits yet another quartz surface beneath even more cabinets, a space designed to house the family’s coffee bar. Down-lit as if to highlight an area designed for a quick pause and a caffeinated drink, this is another feature that combines utility and comfort, yet fits seamlessly into the square footage of the kitchen.

“It’s an overlay kitchen but it looks like it’s inset because of the tight margins and how we built it,” said DeHoop.

And despite the many features and ample storage space, this overlaid kitchen (one that features cabinet doors on top of the cabinetry frame) fits right in. Add in the built-in Thermador appliances like the 30-inch refrigerator and 18-inch freezer styled to match the cabinetry, and the allusion of maximum space is complete.

Soapstone. On this convenient surface, mid-sized appliances like toasters and blenders find their home tucked away from the focal points of the primary food preparation area.

Jim Talsma of Talsma Wood Products, Inc. crafted the custom cabinetry for the kitchen, which features white cabinets with horizontal lines to give the allusion of even more space. To solve the obstacle of cabinets opening horizontally, the team installed pneumatic motors into each of the taller cabinets to allow for a quick press of a button to open and close the door. “One of the fea-

tures that we liked was the power lift doors that are activated by touch,” said Talmsa.

The central point of the kitchen is an expansive, quartz-topped island lacking cabinets or additional features that might distract from its utility.

“We are doing a lot of oversized islands,” said builder Troy DeHoop. “Islands have become more of the central location for eating … for family time.” And lately, Celebrity has been building islands “As big as we can get,” he added.

“A lot of times we’re [only] limited to the size that the stone of the countertop piece comes in.”

“When the kitchen is large enough to accommodate the space, then we’ll build it as big as we can,” said DeHoop.

A beautiful, white

kitchen with custom designed and built cabinetry, crafted by Sherwood Home’s Houtnerf Cabinet Company, was a collaborative effort that included Sherwood Custom Home’s in-house interior designer, Kaitlyn Loundsbery as well as the homeowner’s interior designer friend, Elizabeth Mohney.

The spacious and open kitchen is centered by a large island. “I knew I wanted a center island, and I kept asking that it be bigger and bigger until I arrived at the size I wanted,” said the homeowner. “It’s a great space for prep work and eating family meals.” Ample storage and stateof-the-art appliances complete the look.

“Kaitlyn was great,” continued the homeowner. “I told her what I wanted my kitchen to look like and she did all the hard work of putting it together.”

“Designing kitchens is one of my favorite things,” said Loundsbery. “I came up with the concept for the cabinets, and they were built in-house at Sherwood. They turned out perfectly, and both [the owner] and I are so happy with the way they

look and function. I created plenty of storage space in the kitchen, a pantry, a dedicated “coffee cupboard”— doors can be closed, hiding all the coffee and supplies from view, and other practical but still beautiful kitchen finishes. It’s a good kitchen to work in and keep an eye on the children in the family room and, at the same time, have a view of the lake.”

“It becomes interesting because it’s “Some specialty and different,” said architect Kerry Fitzpatrick. A vital part of the team that worked to execute the homeowner’s modern vision, Fitzpatrick completed an ambitious design with a modern structure and playful, colorful finishes. “It’s a combination of great tradespeople putting a product together,” said Fitzpatrick. “It turned out to be kind of a fun look.”

While Fitzpatrick worked on the architectural design, Carly Visser, Interior Designer of CVI Design, LLC, collaborated on the home’s aesthetic finishes to execute a joint ambition for open, uncluttered rooms and an overall polished look.

Working with the builders early on in the process, Visser decided on all-white walls that allowed many of her custom features — like the bright, teal cabinets in the children’s jack-and-jill bathrooms — to shine. The children’s rooms are an excellent example of how color plays a big part in the home’s design: each of these room’s feature their very own colorful wall, be it dreamy dark blue, pale lilac, or petal pink. For the owner suite, Visser chose a more grown up, misty forest scene in wallpaper.

Each of the children’s bedrooms also feature custom shelving that populates an entire wall for both self expression and storage. “Every kid has a wall,” said DeHoop, of this intentional custom feature.

Though Visser spent much time with the homeowners viewing example designs in showrooms, 36 | early spring 2020

custom items cannot be found in showrooms,” she said.

“That is where working with the building to ‘create’ comes in. For instance, all cabinetry, moss wall, wood walls, railings, etc. are completely custom designed for this home.”

Despite the clean look of white walls and grey accents like the one-piece concrete fireplace surround, Visser worked with her team on the selection of warm wood accents — like the 18- foot cedar walls on each side of the main living room’s fireplace, all accented by the natural light streaming through the room’s nine windows — to give the home a feeling of livability.

Visser also collaborated on the main lighting fixture for the living room — two large, square “clouds” crafted with drywall and built-in lighting that give the ceiling a dreamy, almost sky-like feel.

DeHoop noted that this feature helped to add another focal point for the room to break up the expanse of white walls and ceilings. “Instead of just a flat wall, it gives it some personality,” he said.

In the downstairs living area, Visser continued the look of neutrals accented with warm touches.

The home’s main entertainment center can be found here, nestled within yet another fullheight wooden wall with matching light fixtures.

For Kaitlyn Loundsbery, assisting the homeowners to achieve their vision with the interior design on the house on Payne Lake was a chance to take her keen eye for style and bring her ideas to reality, a reality that was rewarded as the home garnered raves for its furnishings, décor, and finishes.

Loundsbery, in-house interior designer for Sherwood Custom Homes, is originally from Fremont, Mich. and attended Harrington College of Design in Chicago for her associate degree. She then transferred to Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids to complete a bachelor’s degree in fine arts/interior design.

According to homeowner Rebecka, “Kaitlyn was great. For instance, I told her what I wanted my kitchen to look like and she did all the hard work of putting it together.”

blending together and complementing one another. For the children’s rooms, we catered to their own ideas for how they wanted their rooms to look, and it was fun to create those spaces for them. I think they’re very happy with how their rooms turned out.”

There is also plenty of room in the home for casual entertaining; in fact, the downstairs family room is set up perfectly for viewing sports with a large, comfy sectional and three large televisions, just right for watching more than one game at a time.

“Rebecka wanted plenty of storage space in order to keep the main areas sleek and free from clutter,” said Loundsbery. “We created space for everything, and storage is no problem. In fact, there are still some storage areas which have room to spare.

“Rebecka and I worked together to choose furniture and décor that enhanced the architecture of the home,” said Loundsbery. “We did a lot of shopping online and also visited many stores in the area to pick out just the right items. Some of the furniture we eventually settled on was custom made to suit the space.”

“Rebecka also wanted a light and bright space for her family and we picked out paint colors and finishes to achieve that goal,” continued Loundsbery.

“Every room has natural light, and we kept the paint colors fairly neutral, different in every room but still

“It is a nice reminder of the home they shared for 18 years,” said Loundsbery. “Everyone who was part of the project worked together to achieve the final result. The homeowners were great to work with, and we all wanted to create a home that they would love for years to come, and I believe we achieved that.”

From the moment you cross the threshold onto the home’s immersive, dark grey wood tiles, you are ushered through expansive spaces connected neatly by utility, if not by the lack of dividing walls in this open concept home.

Easy to see how this open home with its clean palette took the “People’s Choice” title for “Best Overall Home.” Carly Visser, Interior Designer of CVI Design, LLC, selected bright white walls throughout the entire home and punctuated them with welcome accents of color: the deep green of the living moss feature in the living/dining area or the nature scene wallpaper in the main floor’s guest bathroom.

“Everything in this house is white,” said builder Rob Vis, who further accented the look with large Pella windows with drywall wrapped jams throughout to eliminate any extra lines from traditional moulding.

“It was kind of fun and refreshing to have things done more simple and more clean,” said the home’s architect, Kerry Fitzpatrick, who has been designing homes in West Michigan for 35 years.

Not to be outdone by custom features like the built-in office and children’s cubbies within the mudroom, a fold-down drying rack in the laundry room, and the kitchen’s magnetic pantry door, the stairway serves as a central fixture for the home. Anchored with a steel stringer in an eye-catching U-formation, this feature required all hands on deck from the home’s designer, interior designer, and builder to create just the right look long before Celebrity Builders even began construction. Here, dark metal meets warm wood, accented by natural lighting in the adjacent floor-to-ceiling windows near the staircase.

This central feature of the home also contains one of the home’s recurring aspects: custom lighting in every nook and cranny. “I think the house shows better at night,” said DeHoop.

“There’s so much cool lighting in here.”

Creative lighting aspects by DeWeerd Van Dyke, can be found throughout the entire house: each of the bathrooms contains lighting behind the mirrors, the kitchen contains downlighting beneath the cabinets, and you won’t find a stair or hidden corner without illumination. Unique light fixtures from The Lighting Corner complement the contemporary design.

The porch off the kitchen offers a cozy spot to relax with another fireplace on cooler days and fresh air and sunshine when Mother Nature is in the mood.

Visser decided on all-white walls throughout the home so as to allow many of her custom features — like the bright, teal cabinets in the children’s jack-and-jill bathrooms — to shine. throughout the length of the staircase. On the landing, they installed these same LED lights into a full length channel that takes form in two luminescent stripes. These creative lighting aspects can be found throughout the entire house: each of the bathrooms contain lighting behind the mirrors, the kitchen contains downlighting beneath the cabinets, and you won’t find a stair or hidden corner without illumination.

And lest you think these lighting features require vast amounts of energy to maintain, This home boasts 62 solar panels on its eye-catching, flat roof. “They’re not paying an electrical bill,” said DeHoop, noting that the owners receive a 100 percent return on energy production, and the installation of the panels will pay for themselves in just nine years.

With six bedrooms and six bathrooms, each of the home’s occupants have their own distinct spaces, with custom walls built for storage and decoration, and a wide, walk-in wardrobe complete with a comfortable bench in the owner suite.

The home also contains a secondary living space in the finished, walk-out lower level. Here, 10foot ceilings are accentuated by a sunken sitting room adjacent to a second full kitchen. Unlike the main kitchen, this second space is built for utility, with a pasha penny round backsplash in stainless steel color by Anatolia Tile and leathered granite island (Steel Rock Brushed finish by Lakeside Surfaces) made for poolside snacks and long summer afternoons.

In quick transition from living to really living, the lower level walks out onto the home’s exterior living area, which includes a 40- by 20-foot pool; a large cooking area and a built-in, 42-inch Hestan grill; an exterior shower; and a hot tub.

This exterior living area also has its own cooking surface to complement the custom grill, completed with Steel Rock Brushed Granite by

A home only realized through careful collaboration, Celebrity Builders earned their strips (and not those of the LED sort) with this modern labor of love.

CELEBRITY BUILDERS: A LIFETIME OF FRIENDSHIP Rob Vis and Troy DeHoop have the kind of effortless partnership that only comes with decades of friendship and a joint vision. First meeting in kindergarten, Vis and DeHoop, both West Michigan natives, became fast friends.

Later exploring their own paths as young adults (Vis working in both painting and heating and cooling after high school and DeHoop studying business administration and marketing at Grand Valley State University), they reunited in 2003 to form Celebrity Builders, LLC. Vis and DeHoop play two vital but unique parts of the partnership. “Rob has a good eye for finishes,” said DeHoop, who himself focuses on the home’s structure and construction management. “I’m the guy that starts the house and Rob finishes it,” said DeHoop, adding that they work on each project collaboratively from start to finish.

Constructed by Sherwood Custom Homes with the architectural expertise of Kerry Fitzpatrick, interior designer Kaitlyn Loundsbery, Brian Diemer of Everett’s Landscape, and significant input from the homeowners, this award winner, built on Payne Lake, comes in at 7,000 square feet and is built on land that the family already owned. The original A-frame on the property was torn down for the new construction.

The family’s dream home nestles on the shore, taking full advantage of its lovely surroundings, lake access, and wooded views.

The home is so thoughtfully situated that there are lake views from almost every room as well as easy access to the boating, fishing, swimming, and other outdoor activities the lake provides. Inside, the home is comfortable, spacious, and family-friendly, just right for a busy family consisting of parents, three children (ages 13, 11, and 8), grandma, a big dog, and a cat.

The homeowners were also committed to having plenty of room for extended family who visit almost every weekend and often stay over for food, family, and fun.

The homeowners, Rebecka and Chad, are loving their new home. “We lived on this site for 18 years, in a four-story A-frame,” said Rebecka. “My husband’s parents live next door, and we knew we wanted to stay on this piece of property, but we were ready for a new home. I had been thinking about exactly what I wanted for a long time, so when the time came, we gathered together a team that we knew could see our vision and help us achieve it.

“I knew I wanted Kerry Fitzpatrick for our architect,” she continued. “Jeff Sherwood had done some work on the house next door and had completed some renovation work for us, so we knew the quality of his work. We asked him to join us. I had already started discussing some ideas with a friend who is an interior designer, Elizabeth Mohney. Jeff brought his in-house interior designer, Kaitlyn Loundsbery onboard, and she understood immediately what we were going for.

I had some pretty concrete ideas, and between Elizabeth and Kaitlyn and the rest of the team, we got just what we wanted.”

Fitzpatrick was very attentive to the fact that though the home was very large, it also needed to be familyfriendly and comfortable for the family’s busy lifestyle. The natural flow of the rooms and the casual nature of the design assure that, though grand, it is not overwhelming and that everything is in perfect proportion. Intimate rather than imposing, the home suits the site and the family.

Mahogany doors lead into a gracious foyer and on into the family room with its wall of windows overlooking the lake, a large stone fireplace, built-in storage, and comfortable seating.

An open area on the upstairs landing, complete with desks, bookcases, and space for computers serves as a homework and activity space.

The home office opens to the family room through sliding glass and metal doors. A hidden door within the custom built-ins and millwork, opens to the owner suite closet.

The massive mahogany doors lead into a gracious foyer that is open to the family room with its wall of windows overlooking the lake. A beautiful white kitchen with custom designed and built cabinetry, crafted by Sherwood Home’s Houtnerf Cabinet Company, is centered by a large island. Rebecka says, “I knew I wanted a center island, and I kept asking that it be bigger until I arrived at the size I wanted. It’s a great space for prep work and eating family meals.

Both Kaitlyn and Elizabeth were great at designing the kitchen of my dreams. Ample storage and state-of-theart appliances complete the look.

The welcoming family room features a large stone fireplace, built-in storage, and comfortable seating.

Much of the furniture, including the family room furniture was custom designed and created.

On the other side of the kitchen is a large, glassedin, three-season porch complete with grill, fireplace, and outdoor kitchen. “We love to sit out here when the weather is warm, and we specifically asked for a lot of windows for natural light and a good view of the lake,” said Rebecka.

The home features six bedrooms including a “bunk room” off the lower level family room which serves as a great sleep-over spot for the children and extra space for visitors. Also, off the lower level family room is an exercise room and a spot for children’s games and activities. One of the walls is constructed of wood reclaimed from the original A-frame house.

There are four full bathrooms and two half baths.

Again, the cabinetry is custom made by Houtnerf with plenty of storage and well-appointed finishings and features.

“We only brought a small amount of furniture from our previous house, so almost everything here is new,” said Rebecka. “We bought a lot of it locally or we ordered it from online sources like Wayfair and Maiden Home.” Since Rebecka was so clear on what she wanted, shopping for furniture and décor was relatively easy. She says it all went smoothly because there was a shared understanding of the final vision.

The owner suite is on the first floor and overlooks the lake. It features more of the custom cabinetry found throughout the home. There is a relaxing soaking tub from Richards Supply, and an over-sized shower in the owner bath, and in the bedroom, an intricate, beamed ceiling brings a unique touch to the space.

The lighting fixtures throughout the home are distinctive and eye-catching. Many came from The Lighting Corner in Grandville.

The upper level includes three bedrooms with a shared bath for the boys in the family and an en suite bath for the daughter. All were designed and decorated with input from the children, and the rooms are comfy and cozy, each with its own look and feel. The children’s rooms are carpeted while the rest of the house has hardwood floors with custom tile floors in the bathrooms.

There is also a spacious playroom down a hallway lined with the children’s artwork.

Throughout the home, there are interesting built-ins and intriguing nooks and crannies, including two secret rooms which delight the children with the potential for play.

The lower level includes a family room with adjoining full kitchen; an exercise room and a spot for children’s games and activities. There is also a spacious bunk room providing plenty of sleeping options for overnight guests.

The home is so thoughtfully situated that there are lake views from almost every room as well as easy access to the to multiple deck and patio areas that are ideal when entertaining.

“We love the house,” said Rebecka. “It came together just the way we wanted it, and the people who worked on it with us were responsive to our ideas and were there with good advice when we needed it. All in all, it was a great process from beginning to end, and we plan to enjoy the house for years to come and someday welcome our grandchildren to enjoy it with us!”

“When the clients came to us, we sat down with them and talked about budget as well as their family dynamics and what they needed and wanted in a new home,” said Sherwood. “They had chosen an architect, Kerry Fitzpatrick, with whom we’ve worked on other projects.

These meetings ensured that we were all on the same page. As the construction progressed, the clients also worked with our on-staff interior designer. It was a real team effort to create this home, and we are proud of what we have achieved.

“This project took ten months from teardown of the existing home to the move-in date for the new home.

Since we were preparing to be part of the Parade of Homes, we tried to get it done in as short a time as possible without ever compromising quality.”

SHERWOOD CUSTOM HOMES For Jeff Sherwood, owner of Sherwood Custom Homes, his work is his passion. Knowing what he wanted to do from an early age led him to attend Kent Skills High School (now KCTC-Kent Career Technical Center). He feels that Kent Skills was the ideal place for him to learn the business and get started in his career. In fact, he likes to hire interns and employees who have had the same educational background. After graduation, Sherwood began working for a custom home builder, Ron DeVries, for ten plus years.

“I learned a lot working for Mr. DeVries, but I always knew I wanted to own my own business,” said Sherwood. “I kept working with that objective in mind, honing my skills in order to be ready to go into business for myself.”

In 2007, despite a looming recession, Sherwood and his wife took a leap of faith and founded Sherwood Custom Homes.

“We actually did well from the very beginning, said Sherwood. “As our business was getting started, we made it a practice to never turn down a job, no matter how small and no matter how far we had to travel. In six months, I was able to hire my first employee. Today, there are 14 on the payroll.

“As we’ve grown, we’ve moved into custom building with virtually all our work in that arena,” he continued. “I would say that 99 percent of our work is now custom building. We build three to seven homes a year. We don’t overextend ourselves. Each client deserves personal attention, and we give 100 percent of our combined efforts from day one.”

Sherwood’s staff includes interior designers as well as an in-house cabinetry company, Houtnerf Cabinet Company. “They all do a fantastic job of creating and crafting unique and impressive designs.”

Sherwood lauds his employees: “We work together as a team or a family; we all have the same goals and the same service-oriented mentality. That makes work a pleasure.” ❂

When looking into current cabinetry trends, it seems whatever your heart desires is a yes! From rich and moody to clean and happy, 2020 is a year that’s all about self expression and staying true to your own preferences. The following ideas are meant for inspiration.

COLORFUL CABINETS Green in various shades continues to be a favorite choice for cabinet color, adding drama and personality to kitchens and baths. But, if you don't like green, blue cabinets are a go-to option as well. You'll be seeing many different shades of green and blues in kitchens all over design blogs and magazines throughout the year. Pale mint and olive lend themselves to the farmhouse feel but bright chartreuse or clover green offer a more contemporary flavor. If blue is your thing, cabinets in shades of navy, especially on the lower cabinets, can easily steel the show. White cabinetry is classic and may never go out of style and makes a great canvas for pops of color in other areas.

RECLAIMED WOOD AND ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS If you love the rough-hewn look, reclaimed wood is the choice for you. It’s a great contrast to sleek appliances and elegant countertops. Eco-friendly materials are popping up everywhere in kitchen cabinetry lines. From bamboo to even recycled plastic bottles, cabinet companies are taking this revival of reduce and reuse very seriously and believe it or not, the results are beautiful.

A kitchen serves as command-central of most homes, so it’s also one of the first rooms homeowners choose when it’s time to make upgrades. When approaching your kitchen remodel, it’s important to keep your family’s lifestyle at the forefront of your planning to create a space that fits the way you like to live.

Get the most livable space and enjoyment out of a kitchen remodel with these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry: Make purposeful changes. A desire to bring your kitchen’s style up to date is plenty of motivation for a renovation, but to get maximum benefit from your new space, spend time considering what functional improvements you can make, too. Do you need more cabinets for storage? Is there enough counter space for meal prep? Does the overall layout suit your family’s needs? Even if you chose the original layout and floorplan, chances are good that over time you’ve found a few things you’d change given the chance to do it again.

Consider physical space. If yours is a family that cooks together, or if guests tend to congregate in the kitchen when you’re entertaining, a renovation is the perfect time to make adjustments that accommodate more bodies in the kitchen. When it comes to hard flooring surfaces: wood, tile, vinyl and laminate, it appears you can have any look you desire. Manufacturers continue to push towards replicating natural wood and stone to meet flooring trends but porcelain and cement graphic tiles are hitting the mark for creating statement spaces as well as tiles that come in various shapes. Carpet manufacturers are also making huge strides in technological advancements to produce never-before-seen carpet looks and trends — they can even make carpet now that is 100 percent waterproof. Wow, it really feels like it’s 2020!

VINTAGE BLACK & WHITE Vintage has always been about nostalgia — bringing back the memories of decades past. In 2020, black and white tiles are making a strong comeback. But, it’s not the same old black and white tiles that adorn historic homes. Instead, it’s bold, graphic, and more luxurious. More and more homeowners want a unique twist to the vintage style. This includes smaller tiles with bolder, graphic patterns or over-sized tiles that make an impact. It’s an ideal way to blend vintage with contemporary for a perfect look and feel.

DISTRESSED WOOD & CONCRETE TILES Distressed flooring has been on the radar for some time and continues to be popular. It offers a luxurious, aged look. By undergoing an artificial aging process that gives a slightly worn finish, your floor gains instant character. In preparing distressed wood flooring, various actions are taken depending on the degree and style of “distress” desired. The edges of each wood plank are hand scraped, swirl and kerf markings are added to imitate historic wood and the planks are brushed to remove glossing and give them a soft worn texture. It has become almost impossible to differentiate the tile from the real thing. “Wood” authenticity is also achieved with a directional and textural finish, resembling that of real wood. Wood looks and tile have been and still are all the rage right now, but, carpet is getting back in the game, meeting today’s design aesthetic and ease-of-maintenance demands. Let’s face it, for the last couple of years, carpet has felt like an afterthought — something to consider for an area rug on our wood and tile floors. But, 2020 has us doing a double take with carpeting and here’s why: Carpet manufacturers are using technology to their advantage creating never-before-seen patterns and exciting new features, including the aforementioned carpet that is waterproof! The 2020 carpet trends are filled with some incredible ideas, looks, textures and more ...

WATERPROOF CARPETING I don’t know about you but, I never thought I’d see those two words together. But here we are in 2020 and those words ring true. Because “green” or eco-friendly flooring is so important right now, almost all carpet is now being made from recycled materials, at least in part. You’ll see various types of recycled materials, but one of the most innovative products are carpet tiles made from recycled plastic soda bottles. How great is that?

SISAL CARPET Sisal carpets are sustainably sourced from the woven plant fibers of the agave sisalana. This great, ecofriendly carpet has a rope-like texture that adds a unique, homey look to any space. Both natural sisal and sisal blend carpets are highly durable. They can hold up in heavy traffic areas without any problem. For extra stain resistance, choose an option with a sealing or fire-retardant coating.

JUTE RUGS Plant-based flooring is really taking off in 2020. Case-in-point: jute rugs and carpets. Woven from the same plant fibers that often make burlap, jute rugs are a great indoor decor option. These thick, tightly wound rugs are pretty durable in low traffic areas, but they won’t be a good fit for spaces that have heavy use. They don’t require any special treatment – just vacuum as you would with any other rug. Jute is pretty absorbent though, since it’s a plant fiber, so avoid lots of moisture and areas where stains are more likely.

In recent years they have turned to glass and mirrors to accomplish these goals, creating all-glass showers, glass-front cabinetry, glass railings and bannisters, and many other innovative ideas that new technology in glass-making has afforded. Materials like glass and mirrored surfaces bring light into a space, creating an open feeling desired by many.

Glass has also seen a rise in use in the home for display purposes. Wine cellars have been a favorite space to showcase with glass, making a wine collection visible even behind the door. A frameless glass wine cellar can be built to be climate-controlled.

Decorative walls and backsplashes made completely with mirrors are returning to popularity. These walls areas are more ornate and involved than previous design. Mirrors are cut, antiqued or colored to create unique details and rich textures.

Frameless shower doors are in huge demand. Remodelers are starting to push the design envelope, using new materials like coated, water-repellent glass. This high-quality material is only slightly more expensive, and many homeowners feel its incredibly easy-to-clean surface is worth the added cost.
