Converting to a Roth IRA The timing may be right
Roth IRAs are generally considered among the most attractive retirement savings vehicles available to individual investors. They offer the unique potential to grow investment earnings without incurring any income tax liability, if qualifying distributions are made. It’s important to note that how much you can contribute to a Roth IRA depends on your tax filing status and modified adjusted gross income (MAGI). For a single filer in 2020, your income must be under $139,000 (or $206,000 if you’re filing jointly) in order to contribute. Beyond making regular contributions to a Roth IRA, the other way to take advantage of this savings tool is to move money from a traditional IRA or workplace savings plan to a Roth IRA. These are referred to as Roth IRA conversions. Now may be an opportune time to give this idea a closer look. Here’s what you should know: A TAXABLE TRANSACTION The key factor affecting the decision to pursue a Roth IRA conversion is the tax impact. Remember that some or all of the distributions from traditional IRAs are taxed at ordinary income tax rates. If contributions were made on a pre-tax (tax-deductible) basis, the entire amount of the withdrawal is subject to tax. If after-tax contributions funded a traditional IRA, only the portion of the distribution attributable to investment earnings is taxable. With a Roth IRA, all contributions occur on an after-tax basis. If holding period requirements are met, all distributions can be received on a tax-free basis. Moving money from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA is a taxable event at the time of the conversion. Consider an example of converting a portion of a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. If all contributions to the traditional IRA were made on a pre-tax basis, the entire value of the converted amount is added to your ordinary income for the year and subject to tax at applicable rates. MAKE TAX-SMART CONVERSION DECISIONS If we assume this conversion totaled $100,000 and an ordinary income tax rate of 24% applies to the converted amount, that results in a tax liability of approximately $24,000. It is often recommended that you pay the tax due from available resources in existing taxable accounts. 6 | early spring 2021
This allows the entire amount converted to be shifted to the Roth IRA, maximizing the long-term tax benefits of the conversion. You don’t have to convert all of your IRA assets at one time. It can occur over a series of years to spread out the tax impact. Remember that income is taxed on a progressive scale across a range of tax brackets. You may want to convert an amount that will stay within your current tax bracket. For example, a married couple expecting to have a taxable income of $100,000 for 2020 will be in the 22% federal income tax bracket. That bracket for married filing jointly continues to apply to taxable income up to $171,050. Therefore, they could convert an additional $71,050 without any of the converted amount slipping into a higher tax bracket. THE TIMING MAY BE RIGHT Another consideration relates to the future of tax rates in America. Current income tax rates are near their lowest levels in recent history. There is concern that due to skyrocketing federal debt (much of it spurred on by recent stimulus legislation related to the COVID-19 pandemic), tax rates may rise in the future. By taking the tax hit at this time when you convert funds to a Roth IRA, you may ultimately pay less in tax on your IRA than if you waited to take distributions later, assuming tax rates are higher. Roth conversions can be a very effective tool both in terms of tax management and in helping generate greater after-tax cash flow in retirement. But the process can be complex. BAKED PARMESAN CHICKEN Recipe courtesy of Know Diabetes by Heart Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 18 minutes Servings: 4 (3 ounces chicken per serving) Cooking spray 1 large egg 1 tablespoon water 2 teaspoons olive oil 1/3 cup finely crushed, whole-grain crispbread 1/3 cup shredded or grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley 1/2 teaspoon ground oregano 1/4 teaspoon pepper 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 4 ounces each), visible fat discarded, flattened to 1/4-inch thickness Preheat the oven to 400 F. Lightly spray a 13-by-9-by2-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
As people have spent more time at home, many have rediscovered the simple joy of home-cooking and stumbled upon a secret weapon for health at the same time. By making smart, intentional decisions from breakfast to dinner and every meal (and drink) inbetween, they are supporting strong bodies. A heart-smart eating plan is especially important for more than 30 million people in the U.S. living with type 2 diabetes who are at double the risk for heart disease and stroke compared to those without diabetes, according to the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association’s Know Diabetes by Heart initiative. When managing diabetes and heart health, building a consistent eating plan with the right balance can be a powerful tool. Healthy eating provides benefits for the whole family whether members are managing existing health conditions or not. This recipe for Baked Parmesan Chicken is packed with 30 grams of protein in each serving yet delivers only 280 calories. For a tasty way to increase veg-

In a shallow dish, whisk the egg, water and oil. In a separate shallow dish or pie pan, stir together the crispbread, Parmesan cheese, parsley, oregano and pepper. Dip the chicken in the egg mixture then in crumb mixture, turning to coat at each step and gently shaking off any excess. Using fingertips, gently press the coating mixture so it adheres to the chicken. Arrange the chicken in a single layer in the baking dish. Lightly spray the chicken with cooking spray. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until chicken is no longer pink in the center and the top coating is golden brown. Bring to a boil, covered, over high heat. Cook the green beans, uncovered, 5 minutes, or until tendercrisp. Drain well in a colander.
HAM AND BROCCOLI FRITTATA Recipe courtesy of Know Diabetes by Heart Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 4 (1/4 frittata per serving) Cooking spray 2 cups frozen fat-free potatoes O’Brien, thawed 6 ounces small broccoli florets, rinsed in cold water, drained but not dried 8 large egg whites 1 large egg 4 ounces lower-sodium, low-fat ham (uncured, nitrate/nitrite-free), cut into 1/4-inch cubes 1/4 cup fat-free milk 1/4 teaspoon pepper
In a medium nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat, swirling to coat the bottom. Cook the mushrooms, onion, garlic and salt 5 minutes, or until the mushrooms are soft and lightly browned, stirring frequently. Stir in the lemon juice, pepper and cooked green beans. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Lightly spray a medium ovenproof skillet with cooking spray. Heat over medium heat. Remove from the heat. Put the potatoes in the skillet. Lightly spray with cooking spray. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until potatoes are golden brown, stirring occasionally. In a microwaveable bowl, microwave the broccoli, covered, on high for 3-4 minutes, or until tender-crisp. Drain in a colander. Stir the broccoli into the potatoes. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg whites and egg. Whisk in the ham, milk and pepper. Pour the mixture over the potatoes and broccoli; stir well. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the eggs are set. When Becky and Nate Vandenbroek began working on the latest project of their new custom home company, Hygge Custom Homes, they sought to create something intentional and minimalist, completely lacking in fuss or extras that might distract from their modern style. The pair sought inspiration from the landscape itself, pairing cues from the environment with a quest for clean, rural design. What resulted is a singular home built from passion and purpose, a structure that is as striking as it is simple. The Vandenbroeks completed their first house project together in 2012. A northwest contemporary-style home, “It was a little out of the box from what we see in West Michigan,” said Becky, the design half of the Hygge Custom Homes partnership. After living in the home for two years, the pair was excited to start again, and together completed a trendy modern farmhouse in Ada. For their third project, the pair wanted to tell a unique story about their company's offerings for custom homes. “Our biggest goal is to inject something different into the GR/Ada, metro area,” said Nathan. “That was the project that got us excited about taking this to the next step,” said Becky. And after a lifetime in the industry, Becky was ready to forge her own path. “My dad was a builder,” she said. “I kind of grew up on job sites.” This passion and familiarity with construction led her to ultimately pursue a career in home design. "There weren't a lot of females in the industry back in the day," she added. Through her work, she now hopes to encourage more women to become involved in home construction and other trades.
CLEAN AND MINIMALIST “Becky and Nate really brought this idea of a cleaner sensibility to a nicer modern house to the table," said Chad Gould, the architect for the project. With minimalism at the core of the home, the Vandenbroeks sought a purposeful design that encompassed everything from the overall layout to their choice for exterior siding. This feeling of comfort is at the heart of the concept of hygge [who-guh], a Danish and Norwegian term that refers to feelings of contentment, wellness, or charm. With Scandinavian simplicity and modernity at the heart of this particular home — and their new business — the Vandenbroeks view this project as an opportunity to showcase their personal style. “We tried to be very minimalist but not make it look cold,” said Becky. Part of this execution involved dividing the home into a series of interconnected “barns” that allowed for privacy without sacrificing space. This approach also pays homage to the history of the land, a property that was once a working goat farm. The home contains what the Vandenbroeks call their sleeping barn, living barn and storage barn, as well as an outbuilding/garage they refer to as the adventure barn. Seemingly separate structures from a distance, these barns each have their unique purpose and ecosystem. Each utilizes its own tankless water heater and HVAC system to ensure that the energy needs are individualized and as efficient as possible. “It was really important for us to do an energy efficient home,” said Becky. The home also features closed cell foam insulation — which shelters the structures from the elements — and an energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system — which captures and circulates small amounts of fresh air from the outdoors — but not before first matching its temperature with the interior. The pair also chose cedar siding for the exterior. Though this is a higher maintenance option, cedar is a natural product that will shed fewer toxins into the environment over time. The Vandenbroeks also incorporated smart home features like Lutron Smart Home lighting, an ecobee thermostat, and a Sonos Sound System. Becky noted that this is the “smartest home we've done” thus far. This quest for efficiency also makes its way into the home's aesthetics, which communicate an intentionality in each space, piece of furniture, and fixture. “It's a very simple house in terms of its shape ... there's really no extra detailing

involved on it,” said Gould. “It's very purposeful and straightforward.” “We like to do what we call a cozy modern,” said Becky, and this self-defined moniker results in an inviting simplicity from every angle. A BALANCE OF SPACE Approaching the home from the road, visitors will immediately notice the original grey fencing and wide open spaces of the former goat farm. Just before the driveway, the short gabion wall — a wire cage filled with stones — forms a seemingly natural barrier between the yard and the house. Gould noted that these structures are “fairly straightforward and simple” because they don't require a foundation to build. They also serve as yet another nod to rural design; landowners for centuries built sight walls from rocks dug from their property. In addition, “You do need to develop layers of space and sequences of space,” added Gould, who utilized the walls as a clever aesthetic divider between the natural landscape, the planned landscape, and the house itself. “We used them to define the front courtyard and arrival experience to the house.” Upon entering the home, visitors may be surprised by an interior that communicates an open, airy feel within the barn structures. Gould noted that he designed much of the interior to allow

The unique home features a natural cedar exterior, chosen because it will shed fewer toxins into the environment over time. The design also forgoes eaves, as well as a handle on the custom white oak front door by RJ Raven Company. A short gabion wall ( a wire cage filled with stones) forms a seemingly natural barrier between the yard and the house. The home itself consists of a series of interconnected “barns” that pay homage to the history of the land that was once a working goat farm. Included are a sleeping barn, living barn and storage barn, as well as an outbuilding/garage that is referred to as the adventure barn — these seemingly separate structures each have their unique purpose and ecosystem.

natural light to permeate the rooms without over-expanding the size of the home. Instead of trendy open floor plans that overemphasize space, he worked with the Vandenbroeks to create a home that “felt good to be in” because it was “human-scaled.” He added “We spent a lot of time studying the wall heights, ceiling heights, amount of pitch...” Much of this balance between space and feel is accomplished through the simplicity of the interior design. Becky chose Sherwin Williams Extra White paint throughout the entire home, which reflects natural light and provides a striking contrast for a few of the home's few colorful elements. “All of the baseboard trim and doors were painted the same color for that minimalist vibe,” said Becky, who chose not to include trim pieces like casings and decorative moldings. The pair also decided to forgo eaves, as well as a handle on the custom white oak front door by Grand Rapids' R&J Raven Company. Their goal, according to Nathan, was to “show as much restraint as possible.” This effort shines in the neutral tones throughout the home, including the light hardwood flooring by Duchateau’s The Guild Collection. “It’s a warm honey tone that gives great contrast against our matte black cabinets,” said Becky. This soft black cabinetry extends to the range hood and open air shelving in the kitchen.

The intentional and minimalist exterior features a simple shape with no extra detailing involved. It’s a striking introduction to the modern, straightforward home. The home's lower level features another living and entertainment space, as well as a children's reading nook below the stairs.

The Vandenbroeks used the color black for contrast in many of the home's more utilitarian elements, like the window frames, plumbing fixtures, pendent lighting and a custom stairway railing. This method of careful juxtaposition is designed to comfort and not to distract — to invite but not enclose — the home's occupants and visitors. One such unique feature is the custom built fireplace nestled into its own wall in the main floor living room. Lacking a traditional hearth, this fireplace features a clean face housing a Samsung Frame Television that doubles as an adaptable piece of art. “From a practical standpoint, we had to do some custom venting,” said Nathan,
who crafted the feature with a hidden vertical vent within the custom wall. For the Vandenbroeks, this house meant “Doubling down on being purposeful,” said Gould. He added, “This house is very direct ... there is not a decorative element on it ... unless something is providing a quality of life for them, they weren't interested in pursuing it.” SMALL DEPARTURES The couple's one departure from their neutral, almost bare aesthetic was their choice of penny round tile in their daughter's bedroom — a playful, almost rose gold flooring that pops against white subway tiled walls and light wood cabinetry.

When you step into this light and airy, contemporary home with its sweeping 180-degree lake view, it’s hard to imagine its previous traditional incarnation. Francesca Owings of Francesca Owings Interior Design had helped the homeowners remodel a few rooms in their previous home. When they purchased this home, they knew Francesca had the insight and skill to help them envision a more modern transformation from its traditional architecture. Mid-Century Modern is an architectural design that came into its own by the mid-1950s and is now a significant design movement. Today’s home designers know that humans are not built to be segregated into boxes or separated from nature. A more open concept plan reflects an idea of living that is much more fluid than in a traditional house. As the homeowners explained, “The layout was definitely a main driver for our renovation. The original floor plan included a large formal dining area separate from the formal living area with its beautiful lake views. We wanted the space to feel like the right fit for our family. We chose a design that replaced the dining room and combined kitchen and living spaces for open and gracious entertaining.”
The kitchen had been tucked in the back of the home; a relic of the time when kitchens were considered messy eyesores and food magically appeared in a formal dining room without a hint of preparation. The home was already blessed with floor-to-ceiling windows offering dramatic lake views, but the choppy floor plan needed an overhaul to fully appreciate this advantageous location. When contemplating a renovation this extensive, the team at Francesca Owings Interior Design is uniquely qualified to guide the process. Francesca operates independently, but collaborates seamlessly between the homeowner and everyone who makes the magic happen. She is able to render everything from hand-drawn concept sketches to 3D floor plans, elevations, and perspectives. Her team designs custom cabinetry, trim, and architectural millwork, all the way through to the finishes including furniture and artwork placement, and lighting design. The homeowner’s realtor recommended Kenowa Builders, and they had seen his work on other projects in the area and been duly impressed. From the initial walk-through with CEO Cory Wyma, the homeowners and Francesca knew it was a great fit. Cory is the third-generation now 30 | early spring 2021

operating the family building legacy begun by his grandpa 55 years ago. Cory found his niche thriving on the challenges presented in remodeling and renovation. “Unlike production-style builds, there’s nothing systematic about this work as it presents a new level of understanding construction,” he explained. “It requires that I interact closely with my subcontractors and customers because plans can change on the fly. “Square footage isn’t usually added on a remodel, so it forces me to think things through and be creative to overcome obstacles within the allotted footprint. Today’s homeowners want newer features like a pantry, for example, so our creative team has to rearrange the existing space to make it happen. The end result is unique and because of that extra creative flair, it looks cooler!”

This home had undergone several remodels since being built in the 1970s but they were cosmetic and didn’t address the flawed lifestyle functionality. Stepping inside the original entryway, the lake view was partially obstructed by walls while vision tunneled due to low 8-foot ceilings and dark floors. The design team knew walls needed to come down and the existing cathedral ceiling extended, and Cory had the expertise to determine how extensively the roof needed to be engineered. Cory had a pleasant surprise when he peered into the attic. “You can tell the original builder knew what he was doing by looking at the attic rafters. This builder rafter-framed everything and it takes real skill to do that because it’s all built on site; much of that skill has gone by the wayside. Today’s engineered roof trusses simplify construction by allowing for a larger spans, but make modifications like vaulting a ceiling impossible unless you tear the roof off.
The raftering allowed us to extend the cathedral ceiling and resituate the kitchen into the heart of the home, finally giving the cook a lake view.” Most of this home renovation occurred on the main floor and to make Francesca’s vision possible, the interior was taken down to the studs. This is the point where most homeowners grasp the extent of what they’re undertaking. Francesca helps them picture their home’s future using a 3D modeling computer program called SketchUp. “Showing the clients elevations and drawings of their project is really helpful so they know exactly what they’re getting before I put the order together,” she explained. “These homeowners love to entertain and now they can host 20 people in the house and it doesn’t feel constrained,” said Francesca. “Although this has an open concept feel, there are also liv-
ing spaces that are distinctly separate and intimate; it’s nice for parents and teens to have their own spaces to retreat to when desired.” The end result is striking and a very different experience. Bright and flooded with soul-satisfying natural light, Francesca imbues the space with warmth using touches of custom walnut woodwork. Underfoot, 10-inch wide plank white oak with a European bleached wash provides a clean backdrop. Millwork such as window casings and thick but simple baseboard molding helps elevate the project to modern standards. “The stairway was one of those items that didn’t seem like it needed to be updated, but once everything around it changed, it stuck out,” said Cory. “Plus, it was right by the main entrance into the home. Once we replaced it and updated the balustrade, it finally fit the home.

“We wanted to extend the cathedral ceiling and didn’t want to lose the window next to the range,” he continued. “Francesca had to convince the homeowners that it wasn’t a design faux pas to have that asymmetry. In a more traditional design, the cathedral ceiling would meet up with the center of the range cabinets and everything would be proportioned equally from that point. One thing about modern design is that symmetry isn’t necessary. That’s another gift Francesca brings to the table: Because of the strength of her vision, her client’s know that even though they can’t see the end result, they trust her and it comes out perfectly.” Francesca added, “It was so nice to have that creative back and forth with someone who is so well-versed in remodeling. Cory is very creative and offers a lot of input, and everyone on his team is efficient and talented.” The great room fireplace presented a unique challenge to both supplier and builder. The homeowners took photographs of a fireplace from a resort out west and asked if Francesca could emulate its design. The Hestia natural slab quartzite didn’t come in pieces that large, so Kenowa Builder’s fabricator was tasked with having it mitered, cut, and seamed to get that look. Cory’s team then found a creative way to support the marble mantle to give it that free-floating look. The kitchen is now a focal point of the home and the clear-coat walnut custom cabinetry takes center stage. “A new trend we’re seeing is that the same material on the cabinet face is continued inside the drawer. It’s a subtle, but attractive feature,” adds Francesca. “We also created recessed doors on both

In smaller spaces like the half bath, vivid handblock wallpaper by Abnormals Anonymous creates a fun environment for guests. “At our studio, we’ve collected quite an assortment of wallpaper books, tiles, and other accessories for inspiration,” said Francesca. “It all gets filed away in the back of my mind waiting for that perfect moment where it will unfold in someone’s space.” On working with Francesca, Cory noted, “She's super talented and easy going while keeping the
process moving along. She obviously has a strong eye for design, but at the same time, is flexible and understands our concerns as a builder. She is unique in being able to incorporate interior design with floor plan layout, and that helps because she can control a lot more of what she wants to accomplish.” Cory is seeing more renovations than new builds because people are finding that it’s harder to find land in desirable areas, and new construction costs are skyrocketing. “It takes a whole lot more time and energy to get a new house out of the ground compared to a remodel,” he explained. “There are also more opportunities for hiccups to interrupt a new build. The second fireplace received a clean facelift with paint and a walnut mantelpiece to scale it for the space. Kenowa Builders has carpenters on staff which helps keep projects on schedule and allows changes to be made on the fly if necessary.
“Everyone — from Cory, to his builders and office employees — was a pleasure to work with. The communication process and updates were so valuable to the process. We looked forward to our weekly emails that explained everything that had been accomplished the previous week, and what was planned for the following week. These emails may seem like a small thing but it was just the right amount of information. We never felt overwhelmed with our tight renovation timeline, because Kenowa Builders went above and beyond to help us meet that deadline. We can't imagine going through any renovation without the Francesca Owings Interior Design team,” they continued. “Remodeling a home can be stressful but with Francesca, we felt comfortable and excited at each stage of the process. Countertops No surprises here: quartz remains the number one choice for countertops. Both hygenic and stain resistant, quartz is also extremely strong and durable. Throw in today’s technology, and quartz gives you endless colors, patterns, and finishing techniques to choose from — it can mimic almost any look you want. Did we mention that it’s low maintenance and doesn’t need re-sealing — it’s got it all. Butcher block, marble, concrete, soapstone continue to be options for the chefs who prefer these surfaces for the attributes that are harder to duplicate: a warmer ambiance, a cooler temperature for pastry dough, or naturally aging beauty. These surfaces will always be on the list for various reasons and their beauty is undeniable. We would be amiss if we didn’t mention finish choices, mainly: polished, honed or leathered. As of late, many designers are using more textured and tactile surfaces in their designs and countertops are fair game. Honed and leather surfaces have become common and can be applied to many different materials such as granite, marble, and quartz. Polished remains popular but there are advantages to the others. A honed finish is a matte finish with little to no shine. The overall look will vary depending on the stone type but, it should have a low sheen and a smooth surface. A leathered finish has a soft sheen that is less glossy from a polished slab and to the touch has a different feel.The leather finish retains the stone’s natural color giving it a more sophisticated look than honed. It also hides fingerprints and water spots remarkably well.

Decorative Hardware It’s the details that really stand out in a well designed home and decorative hardware is one of the most important to consider. Beautiful cabinetry hardware can take your kitchen to the next level and stylish door hardware will punctuate any space with a special feel. Oversized drawer pulls are everywhere (by oversized, we mean pulls that range from 6-21 inches long).The longest pulls are often used on the vertical for tall cabinets and on the horizontal for large drawers. These pulls generally have a minimalist fee and are often mixed with smaller pulls of the same style. Although dark finishes on kitchen hardware are nothing new, the rich darkness of flat (or matte) black is something fairly new. This finish has a very high impact on white or light cabinetry and doors. Brushed brass, copper and gold add a rich warm tone to cabinet hardware. The current gold finishes tend to be rich and deep with a brushed finish.They stand out on both light and dark cabinetry and add a sophisticated touch to any kitchen or bathroom. Copper has been around for a long time but is rising in popularity. Like gold finishes, copper has a warm, rich tone but offers a more informal look. It works well in farmhouse style kitchens or more traditional settings. Weathered finishes add extra depth to hardware and offer a unique look with more dimension. No matter the metal — nickel or brass, it adds a contrasting rustic feel that is very desirable.

Glass & Mirrors Natural light is one of the most important components of the home in terms of mood enhancement and mental health. Designers are using glass and mirrors more and more in unique and beautiful ways maximize this commodity. Glass railings and bannisters, all-glass showers, glass-front cabinetry, and many other innovative ideas are becoming common place in our homes. One of our favorite interior glass trends is the black, steel-framed window look (Crittall style). Edgy and versatile, these slim-profile frames have the ability to completely transform a space; not just by giving it an edge that is somehow both retro and modern, but also by opening up a space and letting in more light. It’s a fabulous way to cleverly partition open areas to create different zones, without compromising on light or space. They can be used as internal partitions or connecting doorways, and they're great for dividing up and zoning spaces. It’s no secret open-plan living has been all the rage but, tearing down walls isn't always practical and sometimes spaces still need to be divided or separate (the pandemic has spotlighted this!). The Crittall style is a great solution, and designers love using these steel-framed partitions to create floor plans that feel both light and inclusive but retain an element of separation.

It has become almost impossible to differentiate the tile from the real thing. These replications also include a directional and textural finish, resembling that of the real thing.
