Happy Hygge Content Comfort Winter often means family gatherings, big meals, and fiercely competitive board games. If your family is like mine, Scrabble is on the list. Let me help you impress your family, legitimize your cozy comfort wear, and earn double-digit points with a few new words like "HYGGE ." While the Danish concept of Hygge is only 13 points in Scrabble, its unique spelling will send friends “googling” its authenticity. To avoid embarrassment, back up your tile selection by mastering the pronunciation beforehand and a few fun facts. Hygee is deceptively pronounced Hoo-ga. It is a Danish philosophy of contentment and comfortable living. The styling is minimal by choice, simple rather than stripped down. The Hygge interiors are dominated by linen, wool, and leather, with black accents to add drama. Bleached or natural pine, alder, and oak dominate the furniture and floors with limestone-washed fireplaces and layers of warm lighting. Hygge celebrates small joys and intimate community gatherings. Picture yourself thumbing through an Ikea catalog wrapped in a knit blanket, and you've got the vibe. The clean lines of Scandinavian aesthetics have long been a core principle of modern design. Hygge reintroduces the authentic personal connection, organic materials, and warmth that was lost somewhere along the way. Many homes designed with cavernous open-concept spaces are now exploring how to soften the echo and weave in the cozy principles foundational to Hygge. Here are some ways to add Hygge to your home and win at Scrabble along the way. Boucle (boo-clay) - 10 points Boucle is a soft textured fabric crafted from looped yarns with a soft “nubby” texture. It makes the perfect upholstery choice for low-slung Hygge furniture. Keep it light, even white. New technology with built-in stain resistance will help protect from pets and spills. Use woven throws as a backup plan. Zellige tile (zil-eejsh)) - 17 points A perfect accent for the bath, kitchen, or accent wall, authentic Zellige tile is hand-crafted in Morocco but beautifully captures the Hygge aesthetic. The tile is individually cut and sun-dried by artisans before being individually glazed. The thickness and color vary from tile to tile, so installation is tricky and slow. The time is worth it because the multi-toned glimmer is a conversation starter in any space. Very Hygge.

Veneer (ven-nir) - 9 points The clean look of slab cabinetry is back in vogue. It is easy to maintain, simple and streamlined, perfect for the easy living of Hygge style. Modern styles often paint or coat these doors in high gloss finishes. Hygee style prefers to celebrate the organic character of the wood. Veneers are actual wood material peeled from the log rather than cut. This allows a flowing, continuous grain rather than a planked pattern. Using veneer rather than solid material is a more sustainable option for exotic or slow-growing species. It also has the added benefit of being more temperature stable, a perfect choice for climates with seasonal swings. Quartzite (quart-site) 27 points Unlike "quartz" countertops, which blend stone and resin, Quartzite is 100 percent the real thing. Stain-resistant, durable, and stunning, this natural stone can be used for countertops, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, or shower walls. Quartzite has a beautiful luminosity and bold veining. Because

each piece is unique, visit a local slab supplier to review inventory in person. Warm stone colors like the fashionable Taj Mahal will be very Hygge. So this winter, gather around the fireplace on a faux (FOE -12 points) sheepskin rug as winter settles in. Set up a smorgasbord (18 points) of Smørrebrød. I hear these open-faced Danish sandwiches are perfect for snacking. Cozy into a cup of hot chocolate and a new book, perhaps The Little Book of Hygge by Mike Wiking, who was among the first to share this comfortable philosophy with the rest of the world. THE TASTE OF HOME

Eggs-ellent Meals Together Nutritious family time Making time for meals together can have a positive impact

on the well-being of families, including children and adolescents. In fact, regular meals at home can help reduce stress and boost selfesteem, according to research published in “Canadian Family Physician.” Mealtime conversations are also a perfect opportunity to connect with your loved ones. A study published in “New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development” showed these conversations help improve children’s vocabularies more than being read to aloud. Making time for meals together shouldn’t require spending all night in the kitchen, however. A simple-to-prepare ingredient like eggs can help you spend less time cooking and more time with family. For example, these heart-healthy recipes for Poached Egg Tostadas with Avocado-Tomatillo Salsa, Sweet Potato Hash with Eggs and Poblano Frittata from the Healthy for Good Eat Smart initiative, nationally supported by Eggland’s Best, are ready in 15 minutes or less. They include a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and healthy protein sources, which are recommended by the American Heart Association to help prevent heart disease and stroke.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Transferring Wealth to Heirs How a Trust Could Help Talking with clients about the legacy they wish to leave

behind is an essential part of my job as a financial advisor. How do they want to share their wealth with loved ones and charities that matter to them? What values do they want to pass down and what financial goals do they want to support for their children and grandchildren? How can they transfer their assets in a tax-efficient and planful manner? These are some of the many questions we cover in the course of these conversations. If you find yourself asking similar questions about your own legacy, it may be time to think about whether a trust would make sense for your situation. Read on for a primer on how trusts work and their key benefits. WHAT IS A TRUST? In the simplest terms, trusts are legal entities that hold assets for the benefit of another. Trusts have three core components. A grantor is someone who creates and typically funds the trust. A beneficiary is someone who receives benefits from the trust assets, such as income, principal, or the right to use property (like a home). A trustee is someone who holds the legal title and manages the trust assets according to its terms. The trustee can be the grantor, another person considered qualified to handle trust administration, or an institution, such as a bank. When the grantor sets up a trust, they specify: • the intended purpose, • named beneficiaries and trustees, • provisions about when and what benefits/distributions each beneficiary will receive, • the trustee’s duties, and • when the trust will end. KEY TRUST ATTRIBUTES Trusts might take effect while you’re living or upon your death. Here is a brief overview of the most common types of trusts: LIVING TRUSTS VS. TESTAMENTARY TRUSTS Living trusts, as the name implies, are established and funded during the grantor’s lifetime. The assets in a living trust can remain available for the grantor’s use and benefit during their lifetime, and usually pass to beneficiaries only after the grantor’s passing. Similar to a will, a living trust provides the grantor broad discretion to specify how assets are distributed to the named beneficiaries. For example, a beneficiary may need to reach a specified age before receiving assets from the trust. Because assets held within a living trust typically avoid probate upon the grantor’s passing, they may be transferred with less delay and expense. The trust’s assets and terms typically remain confidential among beneficiaries, as compared to the public disclosure usually involved with probate. A testamentary trust is established at your death based on instructions laid out in your will.A trustee is identified who will manage assets on behalf of the trust’s beneficiaries. After the will goes through probate, designated assets are shifted into the trust. The grantor can specify in advance how trust assets should be managed and how they are to be distributed to beneficiaries.

10 | ISSUE SIX 2023

REVOCABLE TRUSTS VS. IRREVOCABLE TRUSTS Trusts can be revocable or irrevocable. Only trusts that are established during the grantor’s lifetime might remain fully revocable. This allows the grantor to alter the trust or even cancel it altogether if desired. While that flexibility can be beneficial, there are no immediate tax advantages and no creditor protection for assets held in the trust. An irrevocable trust typically limits the grantor from making any meaningful changes to the trust. When established, the grantor often gives up ownership and control of the assets contributed to the trust. While this might involve making a taxable gift, this type of trust can be potentially advantageous from a tax perspective and for protecting assets from creditors. Note that testamentary trusts are generally irrevocable and cannot be changed except in very limited circumstances, such as a court amendment. CONSIDER TRUSTS IN YOUR PLANNING PROCESS Keep in mind that trusts are not just for those with significant wealth. Anybody seeking to preserve assets for children or grandchildren, avoid the expense and delay of probate, maintain greater privacy about their estate or protect assets from creditors may want to explore the advantages trusts can offer.Trusts are complex and there are fees associated with setting them up. Consult an experienced financial advisor and an estate attorney to review your situation and consider whether a trust makes sense for your estate plan. ❂

I

IN 1971, CANADIAN SONGWRITER frontman Burton Cummings of Guess Who fame penned “Sour Suite” as a track in the So Long, Bannatyne album lamenting the turbulent times endemic with both personal and societal woes. Mid song, his lyrics mourn the loss of families and communal connections in the juxtaposition metaphor, “Whatever happened to homes as opposed to houses?” The longing for a change evokes a sense of nostalgia; his lyrics prescribe in a hopeful manner, “Mmm, there’s gotta be a few small changes made.”

“The ache for home lives in all of us.” - Maya Angelou

Those of us, along with Cummings, who do remain nostalgic for change to a past when homes were indeed more authentic, long for the memories of when a trip down the block meant passing the likes of the Hall’s Ranch-style home, the Myer’s Dutch Colonial and the Van’s Craftsman Bungalow. With current trends in today’s marketing of custom homes giving owners an ability to design schemes meant to fit their forever lifestyle, we are returning to the times when homes are indeed more important than just mundane houses. The Mornington, recently completed by Holland’s Bouwkamp Builders Inc., is destined to be one of these hallmark named homes located along Michigan’s West Coast shoreline. Mornington’s three stories rise palatially with a regal air atop a dune overlooking scenic Lake Michigan, drawing the visitor’s eyes upward while approaching the circular motor court fronting the quintessential East Coast, Queen Anne-inspired home. The Mornington is Victorian in its roots but is a true Queen Anne through and through as the most ornate of the Victorians. The asymmetrical facade with a top, front-cross gable configuration; a clutch of round towers and octagonal, finial-tipped, tent-roof turrets; arched windows and a soaring chimney create a stunning profile against the lakeshore backdrop. In true Queen Anne fashion, Mornington is liberally embellished with decorative accouterments. Intricate, handcrafted trim work featuring extensive corbeling of the multi-level porches; faux, leaded-glass windows with muntin design throughout; a wrap-around, sitting porch,

fixed with classic columns and a nostalgic swing; textured, fish-scaled shingle peaks of varying designs; scalloped siding high, with horizontal siding at the mid levels; and soldier course brick masonry ground skirt are nuances that complete the romantic picture. The finer period-inspired elements of turned porch balustrades, classic corbeling on the essential era-correct chimney stack, large trim brackets with intricate scrollwork, and bay window bump outs — all blended in the East Coast hues of grays and whites — complete Mornington’s aesthetically pleasing look, giving a nod to the Queen Anne’s historical roots. The westward facing side of Mornington is equally as elegant. Classic design nuances continue with extensive verandas, a look-out balcony, and a tile sundeck, featuring a pool and spa, along with a terraced lawn stretching toward the foredune bluff. A firepit area paired with a stone pathway leads down to a sunset deck with adjoining stairs traversing the slope to the beach berm below. Through due diligence and a valued recommendation of their close relatives, Mornington owners chose Bouwkamp Builders, Inc. for their project. Randy Bouwkamp founded Bouwkamp Builders Inc. in 1985 and has held the tenet,“If you’re going to do something, do it well,” for the past 38 years. His veteran team act as guides overseeing the entire, detailed building process for their clients, culminating in a luxury, timeless look. As president of Bouwkamp Builders, Randy

spends a majority of his time developing new projects, meeting and working with new clients, assisting in the building process and staying current on changing trends in the building industry. His tight-knit team with a family dynamic includes project manager and director of operations, Rilee Bouwkamp (son), along with onsite project manager Scott Bouwkamp (brother). Randy’s daughter, Quinn, is also involved in the company's website design and marketing. “We find value in building a place that is family centered,” said Bouwkamp. “From our family to yours, we are thrilled to represent generations in the work that we do. Our mission is to build an experience and relationship as solid as our homes.” The Bouwkamps sit down with their clients to determine lifestyle needs. It usually begins with basic ideas and progresses to more specific needs. Bouwkamp Builders pride themselves on listening before suggesting solutions. After the needs analysis is completed, the search for a site to fit the home’s architectural style ensues. The size, topography and restrictions are things considered when acquiring the right tract of land. Bouwkamp has a Michigan broker license and extensive experience in real estate which allows his company to have direct access available properties. The clients, in this case, were able to purchase a picturesque parcel along Lake Michigan from close family members. The owner conceded, “The timing wasn’t particularly right, but there is limited property fronting Lake Michigan.” Given they live out of state, it was reassuring to

have family in the area. The buyer’s father was able to be onsite nearly every day sending them pictures as things progressed. The site itself is a long, yet somewhat-narrow lot with a fair amount of elevation change. The topography needed to be contoured to not only work well for the clients, but also their adjoining neighbors. The clients wanted extensive lakeside living amenities, yet it was imperative to preserve as many old growth trees as possible. Despite being set back further from the water than the original razed structure, the Lake Michigan panoramic views are now more spectacular. Matt Gerard, of Visbeen Architects (who have designed over 2,300 luxury homes in the last 30 years), shared, “We almost always start with pen and pad. There is something about drawing live with clients that inspires more direct input from them. Feedback is often more candid and instantaneous. When Wayne Visbeen is in the room it’s like the lightning round ... I’ve never really seen anyone sketch as quickly as he does with the level of quality he creates ... It’s an extension of the verbal conversation that can only be truly understood with a picture — you know the adage!” The owners have an affinity for old fashioned houses and were very interested in exploring a customized version of a Queen Anne Victorian. “Visbeen did a phenomenal job with the design which is all theirs,” said the owner. “We wanted

a toned down version of a ‘painted lady’ without all the wild stuff like vibrant exterior colors and gingerbread effects, yet retaining the classic turrets, brackets and bump outs. We sat with Wayne Visbeen in his Grand Rapids studio, and after he sketched several versions, it was clear he could handle what we wanted.” Everyone in the Visbeen office is trained to work in a broad spectrum of architectural languages, from contemporary to any true historical style. Randy Bouwkamp agreed, “Wayne’s ability to quickly sketch out-of-the-box ideas presents a high level of creativity ... Visbeen creates a design that not only meets functional requirements but also captures the desired aesthetic and lifestyle of the homeowners.” Gerard confirmed, “With the Mornington, the clients knew right out of the gate that they wanted a Queen Anne-inspired design for their home. Working with them was fantastic because they were just as driven as us to get the details right. Some clients will lean in on our expertise which is why they hired us in the first place, but these clients pushed right alongside us. When the

homeowners are that invested, it makes our work truly rewarding.” It is felt that these meetings actually lessen overall design time. Once completed, the architects create digital 3D renderings and plans for the home that not only show elegant design but also the technical information required by the contractors. Not only do the builders appreciate the thoroughness, but Gerard noted that the clients also love it. Owners can then experience their home at their leisure over a cup of coffee. When approaching Mornington from the streetside, steps lead up to an expansive front sitting porch. To the left is a quaint rounded, corner porch at the base of one of the turrets. Passing through the main door there is a warm foyer with a drawing view into the expansive living area and a commanding view out to the Big Lake. The rounded ceiling and prominent fireplace set the scene in dramatic fashion. To the left is the music room/parlor with space for a grand piano and cozy backside fireplace conversation area. Old World charm is apparent with a floor-to-ceiling library shelf with a rolling access ladder, as well as classic wall coverings, curved walls, pocket doors, detailed millwork and monochromatic paint schemes. One of two main stairways leading to the upper and lower levels is conveniently located midline between the parlor and a front, guest room suite. Both sets feature custom spindlework that is unlike any other Bouwkamp project. Within the period-inspired floor plan design, to the right of the main living area is a barrel-ceiling refreshment bar that passes through to the dining room that leads to the kitchen. The massive blue and white kitchen is a double island affair with two pantries that bracket the additional stairway that leads to the second floor. Period-correct, milk glass pendant lighting lends some segmenting to the space. The professional range is inset with convenient, side cubby spice shelving. Adding to the Queen Anne charm is a front facing sitting room with a secret small office accessible through a custom hidden bookshelf pocket door. This whimsical element, per their son’s request, is used once more as the only entry into a second story flex-room suite. The latch mechanism of this door is the owner's favorite book. Windows line the entire three floors on the lakeside to optimize views of the constantly changing hues and views of the Lake Michigan shoreline. A door at the rear of the kitchen yields to a dramatic circular screened room with an amazing turbine, wood-ribbed ceiling beneath yet another turret. There is an adjacent side porch with a full outdoor cooking area. Entry from the beach and pool area is through French doors to the right of the kitchen featuring a tiled practical transition area with a large shower, changing room, powder room and storage built-ins. Up a step and through Dutch pocket doors exists a convenient garage mudroom with laundry facilities, lockers,

ample closet and a built-in desk. A rear door passes through to a 3 stall carriage house. The design also features a handy pet station complete with a doggie door for their three pets. The second story is accessed by either flight of stairs. The primary suite is a step up through a hallway and double doors. Further in, two flanking doors allow entry to two massive walk-in closets with custom built-in cabinetry. The bedroom is flooded by natural light. The primary is balanced by two flanking guest suites. Across the front of the streetside second floor is a full laundry and the aforementioned hidden flex-suite with a queen Murphy bed. The south stairs climb to the third floor which boasts two guest bedrooms, a full bath, a refreshment bar and an elegant arched viewing deck with a commanding view of Lake Michigan. At the bottom of the stairs, on the lowest level, there is an exercise room, recreation room, bunk room with egress, a full bath, a family room with kitchenette, as well as storage/mechanical space. Gerard divulged, “It’s so easy to forget how much hard work and coordination is behind all the beauty you see on the face of a home like this. Below the surface of what you see is a complex system to make all the Queen Anne details come out just right.” He continued, “None of that gets

done without a great builder like Randy Bouwkamp and his whole team. There are so many opportunities to miss on a detail, but their team executed everything to perfection, which, quite honestly, we have come to expect every time we work with Bouwkamp Builders.” The client proudly affirmed, “This house is amazing; it’s not like any other. Bouwkamp Builders have great tradesmen. Their craftsmanship is evident in all of the details of the home.” She maintained the custom work on the hidden bookshelf doors, the Murphy bed cabinetry and the ribbed ceiling on the screened in porch attest to their skills. Bouwkamp recognizes the value of having a qualified group of contractors and sub-venders that stand beside them daily on the job. “Our preferred subs are those willing to invest in the project details and prioritize tasks to stay efficient ... A strong working relationship with our subcontractors has brought the level of our homes a step higher.” The owners interviewed several design teams, and chose Francesca Owings, Principal Certified Interior Designer and owner of Francesca Owings Interior Design, because she picked up immediately what they wanted to achieve. “Francesca is low-key, not pushy. The great thing about her is she was able to fill the intermediary gap between the architect and builder. Her detailed work was integral in the construction process making everything work.” Francesca has over a decade of professional experience of collaboration with architects and contractors who praise her smart sense of style and attention to detail. She takes pride in her ability to clearly understand client’s visions, aspirations and lifestyle to create a harmonious environment that is functional yet reflects a client’s personality and tastes. For this project, Elizabeth Heinz, who has been part of the Francesca Owings design team for 8 years, was in her element with her extreme attention to detail.

FAST, FRIENDLY & FLEXIBLE CLOSING SERVICES

“All of the inspired exterior flavor is pulled into the interior of the home,”said Gerard. “Francesca Owings and her team did an amazing job throughout the entire process ... I particularly love some of the highly-detailed woodwork of this project. The interior, just like the exterior, is so rich with detail and texture.”

Bouwkamp agreed with this sentiment, enjoying the collaboration with Francesca, Elizabeth and the Owings team through the different stages of construction. “They use detailed CAD drawings and technology to clearly communicate their designs and selections. tors and overall planning.” Owings allowed Randy to plan the schedule more efficiently, minimizing downtime. “Our company is set up to take the work out of your building project,” said Bouwkamp. “You can be as involved as you like, and we love that, but trust me when I say, we build each home as if we are going to live in it ourselves. And that makes a huge difference. “The greatest reward is hearing a client share about their enjoyment of the building process, as well as their genuine happiness with the final product,” he continued. “It was our privilege to present the homeowners with a custom home of superior quality and unique characteristics that reflect their personality.” “As designer who loves and thrives in all the details involved in more traditional style homes, this was a great project to be a part of,” said Heinz. “It was a lot of fun to recreate such a classic ‘antique’ style in a new build — one that will stand the test of time.” “I am truly blessed to enjoy what I do every day and most of that enjoyment comes from the relationships we build along the way,” said Gerard. “Anytime I’m not quite sure if it’s the client or us who loves a home more, I know for sure that it was a fantastic project.” “At the beginning of the project, we were presented with a summer move-in goal,” said Bouwkamp. “This encouraged us to be creative with scheduling throughout the entire build. We made it a priority for our clients to be able to enjoy the home during the beautiful Michigan summer.” The owners particularly enjoy the lakeside outdoor areas of Mornington, beginning their day with morning coffee on the porch, and later on the sunset deck with a glass of wine, then moving to the firepit to enjoy their perfect evening. Their landmark “Lady of the Lake” is clearly a manifestation of Burton Cummings’ yearning for homes instead of houses. ❂

COMFORT & JOY TEXT BY LYNN BAKEMAN PHOTOS BY DAVID DANIELE

PERCHED ON A HILLTOP peninsula, this home captures sweeping panoramic views of the Manitou Islands and Lakes Leelanau and Michigan and is the embodiment of the homeowner’s Danish roots. It is also the reflection of a talented team who learned how to translate the owner’s deeply held ideals of hygge into a home that exceeded their expectations.

“For me, growing up in Denmark, hygge has always been imbedded into our way of life,” shared the wife whose British husband shares similar sensibilities. “It is about creating an atmosphere that leads to happiness and togetherness. It is also about simple pleasures and being present in the moment.” Although the family is international in heritage, demanding careers brought them to West Michigan more than 10 years ago. In their previous Grand Rapids home, they worked with Via Design on a major remodel to move them closer to their desired environment: bringing in natural light, simplifying lines, and opening indoor spaces.

The couple are avid cyclists and over the years developed a deep affinity for the Leelanau peninsula, its shoreline, forests, and farmland. The hilly, post-glacial landscape reminded them of an area of Denmark where their family spent every summer while their children were growing up. After securing a plot of land that offered a potential vista of serene peacefulness, they spent several years sketching out what they envisioned within the template of a Danish summer home; one that was light-filled and contemporary, with extensive glass to maximize the views and to bring nature into their living spaces. Scandinavian design blends minimalism and functionality, combining clean lines with a minimalist aesthetic to create bright and airy interiors. “We discovered that a Scandinavian house may mean something completely different to a Dane and an architect,” noted the homeowner who actively collaborated with the Via Design team to translate their vision into the home’s eventual design.

THE SIMPLISTIC BEAUTY OF A SCANDINAVIAN COTTAGE

Brian Barkwell, co-owner and principal architect at Via Design, coordinated the architectural design with the goal of maximizing views with a focus on creating warm, fluid spaces that capture natural light. “There’s a purity to the home’s design and I love that its rooms are not built in isolation, but in relation to the surrounding landscape,” he commented. Brian continued by saying, “We tested many products for the exterior, but we always came back to a cleaner look allowing the large expanses of glass and the deep roof overhangs to be the stronger elements. Once we settled on the panels, we aligned those seams with the window fenestration so they were expressed in a very contemporary way.” Fenestration, derived from the Latin word for window, refers to any building openings including doors and windows. Advances in construction and materials have liberated an architect’s ability to reimagine load bearing openings allowing more natural light into home design. Shugart Builders have been building and remodeling homes in Northwest Michigan for more than 70 years. With their great depth of experience, they won over the homeowners with the value of their team’s skills. Jorden Parker, their project manager, says that Shugart’s goal is to be very straightforward and transparent to help clients find ways to meet both their budget and aesthetic goals.

“Danish design exemplifies form follows function; the materials make sense. Nothing is overly designed or extravagant. They simply serve their purpose, beautifully.” – Emily Mack, Via Design “The building site was very dynamic,” explained Jorden. “As we cleared the site, a hidden gem was revealed with almost 200-degree views stretching across the horizon.” The site also allowed a substantial backyard and the homeowners added in a nice deck area with a spa pool. “There was a very expansive material selection process for this project driven by the homeowner’s European sensibility to environmental air quality,” said Jorden. “We were very keen to reduce to a minimum the volatile compounds that can be given off from framing, floor materials, wood, insulation, and paint,” said the homeowner. “We selected all materials with low or no emission of volatile gases, so we ended up with a healthy house on completion.” Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 33

“Part of our mission at Shugart Builders is to guide our clients with material decisions that stand up to the weather in our region,” continued Jorden. “We found a nice balance in an LP engineered wood panel with a metal reveal between the panels for low maintenance while accentuating the clean lines of the home design.” Due to the potential of extreme weather and wind conditions, the metal roof was a good choice for durability and longevity without a tremendous amount of maintenance. Its lighter color keeps down heat absorption and the water that flows off the roof is cleaner and cooler than water running over asphalt shingles. From an architectural design perspective, the roof complements the clean, contemporary Danish nature of the home. Noting the design-savvy of her longtime clients, Via Design’s senior interior designer Emily Mack stated, “They never blindly follow typical modern trends which is refreshing and inspiring. Our goal is to provide the best design solution regardless of the style of the project. We look at projects holistically: The exterior and the interior need to be cohesive in order for the design to ultimately succeed. We take a collaborative approach, really listen to the client to meet their goals, yet we like to take initiative to stretch ourselves to produce an original and unique solution.”

The scale and texture of the customcrafted, white oak front door lends to the organic, warm, and welcoming first impression. Large format Terrazzo tile in the entry is a natural choice that maintains the home’s purity of design.

Brian emphasized that the main home entrance experience was important to the client from the very beginning. “They really wanted the initial impression of the home to feel organic, warm, and welcoming to their guests; to impart a sense that they were entering a calming retreat and salve for their senses. Both the scale and texture of the custom-crafted white oak front door was one indication of this experience,” explained Brian. Large format Terrazzo tile was selected for the entry floor. “It was really important to the couple to have materials in their home that are natural and pure,” stated Emily. “This is as much a matter of environmental concern as it is purity of design.” “Terrazzo is a stable product that doesn’t off-gas as much as other materials from an environmental air quality standpoint,” added Jorden. Additionally, Shugart Builders finished the white oak wood flooring off-site to eliminate VOCs at the building site. “We spent a lot of time getting to the right color white for the walls, which sounds silly, but is really important; light, neutral colors are one of the key characteristics of Scandinavian design.” Emily illustrated other important features such as natural, tactile fabrics, light wood furniture, and statement pendant lights. As further example, striking Louis Poulsen lighting is used throughout the kitchen. Established 36 | ISSUE SIX 2023

in 1874, Louis Poulsen has collaborated with prominent Danish designers to create timeless, high-quality products that provide exceptional light. Herman Miller’s classic George Nelson Bubble Lamps provide subtle illumination in the main entry and the primary suite. According to the homeowner, “The Danes have always valued the importance of quality and design, and most will have beautiful Danish design decorations and furniture in their home, which help to create the feeling of hygge. As a student, I saved for years to buy a beautiful designer chair, it is so comfortable, and I still have it today…40 years later!” The living room is considered to be the heart of the home in Nordic design and the homeowner worked closely with Emily to source new furniture, utilize treasured family pieces, and incorporate their carefully curated original art. True to Danish design, there is a notable absence of clutter and bold patterns, instead, muted blue accents allow artwork to take center stage. A twosided fireplace creates a cozy environment whether guests are dining or lounging on the sculptural Bolia Scandinavian sofa.

Beautiful and simple, the Nordic style offers plenty of room for self-expression but follows the basic tenet that understated, timeless design follows function. Jorden points with pride toward the home’s trim work. “We have some of the most talented craftsmen in Northern Michigan and we have worked really hard to refine our well-rounded team. Contemporary trim, while it appears simpler, in many ways, it is less forgiving and more exacting. We worked really hard for all the details to come together. The frameless glass railings, inside and outside, were a unique product that we found for this project, and it turned out great. “The staircase was also quite an accomplishment,” Jorden continued. “The challenge was the clearances between the window and the stair tread and needing to get to the drywall underneath. Getting that to be clean against the oversized window is very difficult.” “The design of the main stairway up to the loft was a challenge,” added Emily. “We went through several options originally thinking it had to be a design focus, but that would have made the stairs visually ‘noisy’ and in conflict with the windows and views. I feel the final design installation was more sculptural and celebrates the simplicity and minimalism

of the architecture while letting the views be the focus on the interior and exterior of the home.” Despite having captivating views from every room, one of the home’s highlights is its loft which affords incredible birds-eye views. “From an architectural standpoint this was one space where there was no compromise,” stated Emily. The homeowners love the space to enjoy an early evening drink and watch the lake or as a quiet place to read and reflect. A Scandinavian kitchen is the epitome of minimalist simplicity and function. marble, the warmth of natural wood, and the mesmerizing view from the soaking tub. The decision was made to execute a zero-clearance shower entry during the build. Due to the geometry of the shower tiles, this can create a challenge for the builder. The entire back side of the home is designed to maximize views and outdoor living. Jorden indicates that the entire western wall of glass features a Pella glazing product called SunDefense that not only helps with solar heat gain and cooling, but also protects interior furniture and textiles. “I think we maximized what Pella could produce in the size of those floor-to-ceiling glass panes,” said Jorden, “but the stunning effect of looking straight through the house to those views is worth it.” Many of the outdoor spaces were designed to be covered by deep, protective roof overhangs, and glass railings elevate the deck providing a sleek, elegant appearance with unimpeded views. Brazilian Ipe wood was used on the upper decking for its superior durability and hardness, and ability to naturally weather to grey without treatment.

The upstairs loft affords incredible birds-eye views and is a favorite space of the homeowners for enjoying an early evening drink and watching the lake or as a quiet place to read and reflect. From the homeowner’s perspective, “We first stayed in the house in December 2022, and it exceeded our expectations. The windows in the kitchen, dining room, and living room all are linked bringing amazing views into all the spaces. The gas fire on the deck is the perfect place to watch the sunset and with 4 different outdoor seating areas we can always find the perfect spot to be outside. The ceiling-tofloor windows in the owner’s suite allow remarkable early morning views across the lake and woods all backlit by the rising sun. “Although we are an international family, we are committed to West Michigan and so this house is a way of linking our love of nature with echoes of our past life in Europe. We still feel this great feeling of relaxation as we drive up to the house and with each change of the seasons, we appreciate the beauty anew. We look forward to all the exciting adventures and events we will experience in such a stunning environment. We always enjoy gatherings of friends and family, and we think this is an ideal place to foster a true sense of hygge.” ❂

HEN JOSH AND TARA BERGHUIS SET OUT TO BUILD THEIR FAMILY HOME, THEY KNEW

EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANTED. AS THE OWNER OF BERGHUIS CONSTRUCTION, JOSH HAS IMPECCABLY BUILT SEVERAL STYLES OF HOMES THROUGHOUT WEST MICHIGAN. BUT, WITH A GROWING FAMILY AND BUSINESS AS HIS FOCUS, THE CLUTTER-FREE LIFESTYLE OF MID-CENTURY MODERN DESIGN MET HIS PERSONAL CRITERIA. THE RESULT IS A FUNCTIONFOCUSED HOME THAT IS INVITING AND, FROM EVERY ANGLE, SPECTACULAR.

The main level is bright and open with a wall of windows flooding the home with natural light. The central space includes the living room, dining area and kitchen. “We wanted to create a home that embraces the mid-century roots of West Michigan,” said Berghuis. “But we also added modern twists to a few design elements and amenities.” By doing so the home offers ease of living to the Berghuis family but still maintains that “work-of-art” feel that comes with the mid-century modern style. Designed by Gary Haisma, Haisma Design, the home is streamlined and solid. Materials such as glass, wood, metal and concrete blend harmoniously in a showcase of exceptional design. The home's modern touches add warmth and convenience with an emphasis on the Berghuis family's lifestyle and taste. Mid-century modern design has become second nature to Haisma who spent several years designing in Palm Springs (which very well might be “the mid-century capital of the world.”) Since Haisma returned to Grand Rapids in 2012, he's already designed six mid-century homes alone. He's involved in all aspects of a home's design: “from the first pencil drawing until the last picture is on the wall,” said Haisma. “Working with Gary and Haisma Design was wonderful,” said Berghuis. “They really captured the goals and styles of the home, from the architecture to the decor.” The main level is bright and open with a wall of windows flooding the home with natural light. 48 | ISSUE SIX 2023

A lofty, sloped ceiling enhances the spacious feel of the main level and is emphasized with a cedar wood fireplace surround that extends to the top. White oak flooring, from DeGraaf Interiors, is finished with a European wax, and diminishes the appearance of little footprints. The kitchen, designed and installed by Woodways, is sleek and offers the high-tech vibe expected from mid-century modern design. The painted wood cabinets are perfectly simplistic. A large, white island, topped with quartz, takes center stage. Low-back stools offer island seating without interrupting the view. The simplicity resonates a bright, clean feel — a refreshing retreat — what “home” should be. The central space includes the living room, dining area and kitchen. The lofty, sloped ceiling enhances the spacious feel and is emphasized with a cedar wood wall that extends to the top. Signature “mid-mod” touches are seen everywhere with texture, pops of citrus color, sunburst accessories and the inclusion of plants throughout. This grand area also opens to an expansive patio. The 8-foot opening brings the outside in and dining al fresco is hard to resist. “The home is not huge, but it feels big,” said Haisma. “The spaces are a decent size and people utilize them. It feels comfortable for two but entertains 25 just as easily.” The stunning entrance area with its ladder-like, modern front door from RJ Raven is a fitting introduction to the home. From this foyer space Berghuis's home office is accessed, giving visiting clients an impressive first-hand look at his product: a beautiful, quality home. A custom, built-in suspended desk and classic mid-century colors and furnishings in the office emphasize the company's attention to detail. “Like all the homes we do, we enjoy taking a team approach and thinking outside the box to create a one-of-a-kind custom home,” said Berghuis. “Taking Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 49

The main floor owners' suite is simple and relaxing. A cedar wood wall again brings warmth while metallic accent tables and a simple headboard continue the mid-century style. this approach is more work but also more rewarding for us as a team and for the client who can enjoy the home long after we are done.” White oak flooring is the staple throughout most of the main floor. Finished with a European wax, its color and texture is ideal for the home's clean look. A neutral colored area rug in the living room adds another layer of texture and allows the room's vibrantly colored furnishings and accessories to pop. The kitchen, designed and installed by Woodways, is sleek and offers the high tech vibe you expect from a mid-century modern kitchen. A large white island topped with quartz takes center stage and houses the sink and dishwasher. Low-back stools offer island seating without interrupting the view. Painted wood cabinets are simplified to perfection. A clean-lined, mango wood dining table gives a sophisticated feel and is surrounded by Eames style chairs in complementary white. Just off the kitchen, a small powder room makes the grade with a modern faucet and fixtures. Wood paneling with a contemporary honey comb design adds texture to the simplistic room. The all-white space with a mirrored wall is the perfect backdrop for a splash of retro color with a hand towel or other accessories.

The main floor owners' suite is simple and relaxing. A cedar wood wall again brings warmth while metallic accent tables and a simplistic headboard continue the mid-century style. The room also opens to the patio and offers views of a natural field that will delight with the changing scenery from Michigan's four seasons. The owners' bath reveals more of the home's modern elements with its spa-like atmosphere. Designed as a relaxing retreat, the spacious room is an escape to luxury. Unique storage solutions are seen throughout. The owners' suite features walls of sliding-door closet space that present a sleek design while hiding the wardrobes inside. The laundry room features a unique design of different sized cabinets, creating a wall of interest while meeting the family's need for both individual and group storage. Custom designed by the homeowner and flawlessly built by Woodways, the space keeps the busy family organized from season to season. A black steel railing frames a floating stairway to the lower level. Here, concrete floors with an epoxy finish emphasize the modern feel and showcases the reveal trim beautifully. A styling that has been around for awhile but not often seen in West Michigan, reveal trim creates an aesthetic division on drywall panels. In a modern style home where traditional trim is absent, reveal trim adds interest to otherwise plain walls — like a frame to a modern painting. “We took a concept and designed it to be cost effective, yet a unique product that is more durable than a tradition install,” said Berghuis of the reveal trim. “We worked hand in hand with our lumber yard, Standard Lumber, and used high tech tools to create a finished product that is not only fun but durable and will stand the test of time — and kids!” Fun furnishings and bright colors create an inviting space on the lower level for family and friends to hang out. A large screen TV mounted to a wall of walnut panels adds warmth as well as the walnut cabinetry used for the wet bar area. Custom-built, colorful bunk beds with ample storage create the ideal kid haven — one of three bedrooms on the lower floor. A full bath, work out room and a kid-friendly crafting area under the stairs complete this level that is also a walkout to the back yard. “While we enjoy working with all types and styles of homes we have found working with modern homes has a distinct set of challenges in regards to planning, preparation and the understanding of unique building techniques,” said Berghuis. “Our knowledge and experience have really helped separate us as a go-to modern builder in the area. In the end our team has a unique set of God-given talents and our goal is to use these talents to the best of our ability, and to give back to others.” ❂
