CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

invested in the assets you have? Answering these questions can help you decide if you need to rebalance your asset allocation or make other adjustments to your investing strategy. •YOUR BUDGET. There’s a good chance that your cash flow needs will vary in the summer months to come. In addition to summer travel, you may need additional funds for things like child care or extracurricular programs while your kids are away from school. Take time to plan ahead now so you can enjoy the summer fun while still feeling confident that you’re prioritizing retirement and other financial goals. •YOUR CREDIT REPORT. Did you know the three major credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – are required by law to provide you with one free credit report annually? Make it a habit each spring to check your credit report. Doing so is a good way to ensure accuracy, protect against identity theft, and help you prepare for what interest rate you may receive if you plan to make a big purchase soon (such as a vacation home or new boat). •YOUR PROTECTION NEEDS. While de-cluttering, take time to review life, home, auto and disability insurance policies to make sure you are still satisfied with your level of coverage. If you’ve experienced any life-changing events, such as divorce or the birth of a child, it’s possible that your needs have changed.

Spring Clean Your Financial House Seven ways to freshen your finances Spring is here For many of us, the increasingly longer days and

warmer weather signify a chance to tidy up and start fresh. If you enjoy the ritual of spring cleaning, why not take time to spruce up your finances as well? The following list is a great place to start: •YOUR GOALS. If you set New Year’s financial resolutions, now is a good time to evaluate your progress. If you’re on track – excellent! If you’re not where you hoped you’d be, recommit to your goals. Identify what obstacles are in your way and create a plan to overcome them. If you need help deciding what to do next or how to stay on course going forward, consider meeting with a financial advisor who can provide you with a second opinion and help keep you accountable to your progress. •YOUR PORTFOLIO. As you evaluate your financial goals, it may be helpful to also review your portfolio, as the two often go hand-inhand.Take a look at your asset allocation and ask yourself the following questions: Are you still diversified and invested according to your ability to withstand a potential market drop and the timeframe of when you need the money? And, do you understand why you are

10 | spring 2019

•YOUR BENEFITS. Even though open enrollment is typically in the fall, spring is a good time to make sure the benefits you selected are being maximized. Scheduling regular appointments with medical professionals, your eye doctor and dentist can be a great place to start. Also, check to see if you’re eligible for any elective benefits you’re considering, such as a new pair of eye glasses or orthodontic work. •YOUR ESTATE PLAN. Estate planning is important regardless of your net worth. It’s never too early to create or update your will, health care directive, beneficiaries and basic powers-of-attorney – all of which can help your loved ones make decisions in line with your wishes in the event of your death. If giving assets to your loved ones and/or reducing your tax liability are important to you, an estate plan can also help you with strategies to accomplish those goals. As with many spring cleaning projects, it’s possible to get overwhelmed as you review your finances. If this happens to you, step back and take each task one at a time. A financial advisor in your area can also help you get “unstuck” and identify ways to re-energize your finances.

farmhouse

“SEE YOU AGAIN IN TEN YEARS!”

said a note left with the homeowners by Jeff Segard of Segard Builders

after he completed their previous home. They laughed because they had built their dream home and were

set for life. Ten years later, the home-

owner mailed the note back to Segard and said, “We’re ready to build with you again!”

Modern farmhouses are sprouting up throughout the Michigan landscape like tulips at springtime. Get the right build/design team on board, add the homeowner’s enthusiastic endorsement giving free rein to creativity, and watch the home grow organically into something uniquely special. “We discovered the key to getting the best result,” shared the homeowners. “Select the absolute best talent and trust their instincts. They knew where they wanted to take our home and had to nudge us to see their vision when we couldn’t. Anytime we weren’t inclined to ... we were wrong!”

This resulted in a contemporary design with a side helping of nostalgia. In a nod to the husband’s roots growing up on a farm, the couple wanted a farmhouse aesthetic with industrial touches. This was a complete departure from the stately Old World European home they had previously built with Segard Builders. “Around early 2003, we were given Segard’s name as an up-and-coming young builder,” explained the homeowner. He won us over when he presented two bids to us: one within our stated budget; and another that reflected the way he felt the house should be built. We appreciated his honesty and were so happy we chose him, as our first house would not have been so exceptional without his vision and skill.

The site proved challenging, and the home had to be creatively oriented for privacy. The back faces the road while the front is approached from a curving driveway. Extraordinary landscaping, by Kappes Landscapes, make this approach seem organic. The home’s exterior is a graphic contrast of white with dark alloy window cladding. The dark grey connector, from the garage to the home looks to be a historically accurate addition. The garage doors, from Bouma Bros., complement the design perfectly. “We did not use an interior designer when we built the first house,” said the wife. “I have a good eye and enjoy interior design, and felt I could do it myself. In hindsight, I made more work for everyone on decisions that would have been made by a professional interior designer. Although beautiful, it wasn’t exactly right until Segard introduced me to Laura Davidson of Dwellings Design Studio. She got the décor of our first house to sing plus we had a ball working together and forged a great friendship. Naturally, when it came time to build our second house, I was going to work with her.” Davidson understood her client’s tastes and needs well, and since they were downsizing by half, she knew that Jeff Visser of J. Visser Design had the skill to create spaces that were rightsized and purposeful. Over time, Visser has noticed that most homes have a ten-year lifespan. Kids grow up and out, tastes change, and suddenly your four walls don’t fit your lifestyle any longer. “At this

point in my career, I’m seeing empty nesters with a similar demand for around 2,000 square feet plus or minus of main floor living to meet their daily needs,” said Visser. “Because this couple is very warm and convivial, and enjoy being gracious hosts, we wanted to create extra spaces for larger functions and room for visiting guests.” “Watching Visser work is fascinating as the house evolves from paper to fruition,” stated Davidson. “The design started so differently with deep overhangs and lots of porch, typical of a Southern lowcountry style which we all thought we wanted; then it changed naturally.” Visser listened to the clients describe the spaces they desired in their home and the rural setting and acreage began to dictate a farmhouse ease. The site also proved challenging, and the house had to be creatively oriented for privacy. The back of the home faces the road while the front is approached from a curving driveway. Visser’s efforts and extraordinary landscaping, courtesy

of registered landscape architect Gary Kappes of Kappes Landscapes, make this approach seem organic. Hardscape is defined as the man-made features used in landscape architecture such as stone paths or walls, which are softened by vegetation. Using natural Fond du Lac and New York bluestone, Kappes succeeded in his intent to create a rugged foundation and a dry lay stack stone wall that mimics that of a historic Michigan barn. “My philosophy is to help the landscape fit the architecture and the site with a unique design for each client,” Kappes explained. “I wanted the home to have a sense of permanence, but rustic; not mortared and tidy. Then the home landscape transitions organically into the surrounding natural fields. “I give the homeowners kudos because they gave me artistic license to provide something very different that you won’t see in every neighborhood,”

The main kitchen is petite in size but feels quite spacious with the vaulted ceiling and windows above the cabinets letting in natural light. Tucked around the corner is a pantry that serves as a fully equipped commercial kitchen with appliances from Bekins. The ersatz “addition” coming from the garage is a long mudroom with a beautiful, grey herringbone tile floor, cerused oak ceiling, and café curtains. continued Kappes. “Unlike a formal landscape, I planted in clumps and masses presenting drifts of color for more texture and punch.” The home’s exterior is a very graphic contrast of white with dark alloy window cladding. One of the most striking features besides the textural interest of its standing seam metal roof, is the contrasting connector from the garage to the home. Historically, that would have been an addition so the design team pushed for painting the brick dark grey. Since the owners were unsure, Segard graciously offered to repaint it, but with the added visual drama, it’s one of their favorite elements. A kitchen garden of fresh herbs adds a welcoming touch to the home’s front entrance and beckons with meandering stepping stones to double doors off the kitchen. An oversized, 42-inch

cerused front door has a beautiful copper screen setting a warm, nostalgic farmhouse tone and offering fresh air breezes. It is matched by an exact profile interior full door. Once inside, the magic of Davidson’s ability to mix patterns, layer in rich details, and subtly repeat themes that offer continuity becomes apparent. The details of the homeowner’s decorating skills also shine as she doesn’t shy away from color and has intriguing collections that are artfully arranged throughout the house. “Even as a designer I have learned from her that when you acquire loved things, it’s more impactful and interesting to display them en masse than scattered throughout the home,” noted Davidson. In a cozy alcove, the dining room provides sweeping views of the backyard through floor-to-ceiling windows. A grass cloth ceiling adds visual texture above the artisan light fixture in a Cupertino finish. The porch features a dormer roof and transom windows that bring light into the center of the home. A fabricator-crafted, riveted metal fireplace is the perfect complement to the Ghost Wood ceiling that looks reclaimed, but is actually created in a six-step eco-friendly process using wood salvaged from wildfire and beetle-destroyed forests. bone tile floor, cerused oak ceiling, cute café curtains, and lockers with perforated upper cabinets adding ventilation and character. The idea is from an old vintage shutter and this theme is repeated in the pantry and bedrooms. In the half bath, Segard’s craftsmen brought Davidson’s designs to life for a historical farmhouse feel with custom cerused oak cabinets; mirror, ship lap walls and oval glass door knobs. Past the powder room is a drop zone created for the owners to leave their mail and keys. The window that lights that space was at first a traditional square. “The owner and I both have a love for designer Thom Filicia’s work. In his book American Beauty, he describes the quaintness and visual interest achieved by turning windows on a dime; we used that technique here and in the owner’s suite,” said Davidson.

Noticeably absent is the laundry room. “That's valuable real estate back by the garage,” explains Davidson. “With Michigan’s changeable weather, we need the space to store the requisite boots, coats, and outdoor gear. Since the majority of laundry is clothing, towels, and bedding, we moved that room to just off the owner’s suite for convenient efficiency.” The owner and Davidson agreed that in this phase of their life they wanted their home to have a fresher, more minimal feel. This simpler approach allowed Segard’s craftsmanship and the character and texture of the design elements to shine. These are generous people who love to entertain so the kitchen and great room became a big focus where they can easily entertain up to 40 people. Although the kitchen is petite in size, it feels quite spacious with the vaulted and cerused wood-beamed ceiling running the entire length and with windows above the kitchen cabinets letting in natural light. The owner reports she can occasionally see the moon through those upper windows.

Natural, white oak floors span the main floor and carry down the staircase to the lower level. The staircase is broken up with a wood landing at the bottom that serves as a cozy reading nook as well as a place to highlight some of the owner’s carefully curated collections such as children's books; fun, eclectic pillows and a wire basket filled with artisan handmade balls in different, wonderful fabrics. The owners’ grandchildren love their under-the-stairs playroom nook accessed by a whimsical door within a door. .

A barn beam reclaimed from the husband’s family farm serves as the centerpiece on the kitchen vent hood. Handmade tile in a herringbone pattern adds textural interest in the backsplash. Vintage cup pull hardware by Ashley Norton is a living metal which will wear to a natural patina. Carrera quartzite tops the counters and the island which is finished in an “X” with a nod to the modern farmhouse. Above the French doors which lead to the kitchen garden, Davidson had Segard’s talented craftsman weld a floating transom. One of the many metal touches used throughout the home to contribute to the theme of enduring permanence.

Tucked around the corner is a pantry that serves as a fully equipped commercial kitchen. Perfect for food prep during large events, the owner enjoys baking in the space because of the butcher block top, natural light, and the convenience of having everything at her fingertips. Subway tile runs from floor to ceiling and the custom metal drawer fronts offer durability and function with an artisan feel. In a cozy alcove, the dining room provides sweeping views of the backyard through floor-toceiling windows. A grass cloth ceiling adds visual texture above the artisan light fixture in a Cupertino finish. Details like the windows are a huge part of how the house lives with the amount of light and views they provide each room. Getting the correct proportion and scale of windows is the hallmark of a Visser design. This is even more apparent in the porch. Since the approach to the home is from the back, the porch becomes the centerpiece and has been treated with a dormer roof and transom windows that bring light into the center of the home. Inside this space, the second story vantage point makes it feel like a tree house. 24 | spring 2019

Another of the family barn beams was reclaimed and reused as a fireplace mantle that pops against the fabricator-crafted riveted metal fireplace already beginning to naturally rust. The ceiling is Ghost Wood which looks reclaimed, but is actually created in a six-step eco-friendly process using wood salvaged from wildfire and beetle-destroyed forests. Light porcelain tile floors provide a soothing backdrop to let Davidson’s patterns and textiles take center stage. Just down the hallway toward the owner’s suite is one of Davidson’s favorite spaces: the home office. “That whole room just feels like a hug!” she exclaimed. “I loved that the homeowner was willing to allow that much drama to go into a smaller space and not be afraid of that.” Warm charcoal walls, a patterned carpet and shots of chartreuse accents are framed by a grass cloth ceiling. Natural, white oak floors continue into the owner’s suite which is an oasis of soothing colors while continuing the cerused beams and subtle metal accents used throughout the home. A painted brick fireplace warms the space and warm grey barn doors lead to the bathroom.

The owner’s suite is an oasis of soothing colors. A natural marble floor and soak tub add elegance to the bathroom while repeated themes such as the café curtains, ship lap walls, cerused beams, metal frames, and a herringbone shower tile complete the space. Near the owner’s suite is the home office. It is a cozy space with warm charcoal walls, a patterned carpet and shots of chartreuse accents all framed by a grass cloth ceiling.

A natural marble floor and soak tub add elegance while Davidson repeats home themes such as the café curtains over the tub, ship lap walls, beams, metal frames, and herringbone shower tile. “We really liked the artisan feel of the raw metal used in the home, and the owner came up with using a metal mesh called banker’s wire to create the arresting stairway screen. Another floating transom was fabricated to hang above the staircase mirroring the one in the kitchen. In the homes she designs, Davidson likes to break up the staircase with a wood landing for longevity. In this home, she’s created a cozy reading nook on the landing that also serves to highlight some of the owner’s carefully curated collections.

Family is always welcome in this home, and young and old will feel comfortable in bedrooms with private en suite bathrooms. The décor runs the gamut from whimsical to modern sophistication depending on the audience. Behind every home like this are hours of meetings and back-and-forth interplay balancing the desires of the homeowners and the creatives who work so hard to manage expectations and deliver the best possible outcome. The homeowners got an end result that exceeded their expectations: “Visser Design hit it out of the park and we regularly say out loud to each other how perfectly the house works for us. I miss our meetings with Laura Davidson where I could not wait to see what suggestions and selections she had discovered. Jeff Segard has a great eye for design and the absolute best subs, whom he treats with dignity and respect. He makes sure everything is built to his satisfaction and his standards are of the highest quality. He was available at all times and made us feel like he had all the time in the world for us.” By letting the team flex their creativity, the home grew organically to fit both the setting and the people who live so happily within its walls. ❂

WHERE IT STARTS Emerging trends begin in European markets and high-end residential or commercial projects. They are typically 1 to 3 years away from being fully embraced by mainstream consumers. Some emerging trends identified in Dura Supremes’ 2019 Trend Report are: BLACK COMES BACK Historically, black has been used for architectural elements and is a classic look. Recently we saw black waning as gray tones emerged in mainstream design, but now we are watching the color’s resurgence in popularity in contemporary designs. The antithesis to the tendency to go for all white kitchens, black and moodier hued kitchen design ideas are sure to quickly add an elegant sense of drama, are easier to manage, and are an elegant alternative to standard ivories. Timeless in appeal and sure to add easy elegance to any kitchen, black cabinetry and appliances finished with either gold or copper accents and hardware makes for a grand gesture in any kitchen. Also of note, LED functional lighting systems are combined with oversized show stopping fixtures are a major design element for black cabinetry. BRUSHED BRASS 2019 is setting up to be a year where we wave goodbye to stainless steel and polished nickel, and welcome brass accents back into our homes. Brass is a surprisingly warm and subtle alternative to the expected steel accents. For metals, gold and copper continue to push forward. The trend toward warm colors includes these metals. For large appliances, two of the exciting new introductions are matte black and matte white. They offer a simple color in an exciting new look. Beyond that, if budget allows, a single piece in color is moving forward. AU NATUREL! Brown tones in wood are re-emerging. As people retreat from white kitchens, we see them returning to beautiful woods. Walnut and rift oak tend to be top choices, but people are also moving toward white oak for a natural, organic look. Light, weathered, or distressed wood tones are also prevalent in flooring, islands, or other accessories in the home. This is where we will see a lot more barn wood and raw edge or live-edge looks.

TIME TO LET GO Subway tiles may be timeless, but they are also beyond tired at the moment as you can spot them everywhere. Go beyond expectations and opt for tiles and patterns — like herringbone — that are more unexpected to give your home a unique edge.

TWO R E N O V A T I O N S

HOME RENOVATIONS TAKE INSPIRATION and know-how. How a home lives, for most, is its most important quality. How a home looks is at the top of the list as well. The good news is, if you put your trust in the right professionals, good looks and great function can go hand in hand. The key to a successful renovation is having both a good designer and builder on board. The following two renovations took place in two different towns for two different clients with very different lifestyles. The common denominator of both projects is the sophisticated vision of Jennifer Butler Design, and the flawless execution by Josh Berghuis Construction.

Principal Jennifer Butler has been an interior designer in Grand Rapids, Mich. for nearly 20 years. What started as a small independent design business has grown to a thriving design company with three locations: Grand Rapids, Mich; Boyne City, Mich. and Franklin Lakes, NJ. She works in both the residential and commercial markets and has a love for designing fresh, detailed spaces that keep her clients coming back again and again. Her business is continuing to grow with Grand Rapids, and her team is ready for it. “Businesses and residents from all over the country see the value in making the Grand Rapids area home,” said Butler. “And, those relocating to our community have actually been a great resource for us recently.” The counterpart to this successful renovation team is Berghuis Construction. Their experience and intuitive approach to designing for and with the client make them invaluable. Owner Josh Berghuis describes the relationship that demonstrates how personal the process is in order to truly create, not just build: “We love putting together the pieces, applying design input from the team and making something beautiful. But, building for us is more than just creating something beautiful; it is about the process, the relationships we build, and the memories we make along the way.”

project

ONE THE FIRST PROJECT is one that begins in the place most often overlooked and underutilized in many homes, the lower level living space. These Ada homeowners have young children, demanding professional obligations, and needed better spaces for their active family. Home needed to feel like an oasis from the chaos of work and life while encouraging lively interaction within a young family building roots. That type of space needs to be very versatile as the needs of the family change a lot in this phase of life. Butler had the challenge of designing an inviting space that would be comfortable for everyone to unwind. “People-centric interiors improve the lives of those who inhabit them,” said Butler. “Great design helps families enjoy quality time at home.”

The original walkout lower level was dark and outdated, and definitely did not take advantage of the natural light and square footage that was present. The clients wanted to remodel the family room, wet bar, and theater room. The most effective change in this design was to remove a huge built-in media unit that acted as a room divider for the space. Not only did it block the natural light from filtering into the space, it also created a barrier to entertaining with the bar located behind it. By opening the area and upgrading the previously nondescript bar space with sleek and modern features like floating shelves on crisp glass tile — it is now a fantastic spot conducive to entertaining both family and friends. The space where the built-in used to seclude the bar is now a great spot for a bar table that leads to the spacious family room. The entire area is now a bright retreat where the family loves to gather and relax.

A theater room was created in a windowless room by adding stepped seating, ambient lighting and cozy finishes.

Another feature this family now thoroughly enjoys is the lower level’s theater room. Movie nights are an important part of their time together, and luckily this lower level housed the perfect spot for the big screen experience. Butler took advantage of a windowless and awkward room by adding sconces for ambient lighting and stepped seating for better screen viewing. The playful carpet is relatively neutral yet is also a reminder that it’s time for some fun. The cozy finishes and desirable layout has the family staying for a double feature more often than not.

TWO

THE SECOND RENOVATION tackled an entirely different set of wants and needs, but was still beautifully executed through the collaboration of Jennifer Butler Design and Berghuis Construction collaboration. With no children living at home, and with careers that now give them a little more control over their time, these clients wanted to refresh their main living spaces where they found themselves spending more and more time. The renovation began with a simple scope: a discussion about updating the stacked-stone, great room fireplace but quickly grew into a much larger project. The final executed plans included the fireplace and living room, the sunroom, kitchen, mudroom, laundry room, powder room and the home office. They essentially ended up with a complete renovation of the main floor, a decision, they say, they’ll never regret. The design was the vision of senior interior designer, Andy Yates. His initial connection with the clients easily led to their trust in him as he developed his concept that went well beyond the visual upgrades and immensely improved the clients’ quality of life. Yates began his design career in Chicago which informs his enhanced sense of decoration and style, and how to incorporate them while also understanding context and the history of furnishings and art. With the homeowners being avid art collectors and open to sophisticated design, they were off to a great start.

The color palette is a range of soft purples and daring fuchsias, a mix of textures and materials to layer interest at every turn without disrupting the clean feel of modern design. Art has prominent and thoughtful placement throughout the home with room to grow the collection. The living room fireplace experienced a complete transformation from a brick elephant in the room to a sleek asymmetrical showcase of true craftsmanship. Berghuis Construction is meticulous in executing the careful designs given to them. They love the challenge of custom construction. As Josh Berghuis describes it, “Everyday we feel lucky that we get to walk alongside clients and help guide then through the process — whether it’s a new home or renovation — where they can see their dream turn into a reality.” As a newer home with an open plan, the dining and kitchen areas are an extension of the living room and became part of the scope for consistency in the renovation. The kitchen held a dilemma common in many renovations: budget. By keeping the layout the same, the countertops could be salvaged and reused but created some design challenges. Selecting the right cabinet color and backsplash elevated the existing countertops so that they now feel intentional and fresh. The neutral finishes create a light and airy ambiance while allowing for the bold accents to really shine. Glass cabinets doors and a modern stainless steel hood also add updated style. The dining space has

updated furnishings and leads to a brilliant sunroom that draws you in with its interesting layers of color, texture and detail. The sunroom is a burst of life with splashes of color and glitz balanced with natural textures and a beautiful sylvan setting. Its array of vibrant pillows that adorn a cozy breakfast nook livens things up along with a textural grasscloth wallcovering that complements the view out the outdoors. This has become a favorite spot for the couple to perch with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, enjoy the nature surrounding them, and just recharge. Her home office — a collaborative effort with Yates — is a throwback to the best parts of midcentury modern design. Collected original pieces stand out like sculptures in the room, but this space has all of the function that every office needs. The wallcovering is the obvious showstopper, but a collector knows there is still room for more. The floating shelves allow for a few, small pieces to add dimension to the space, but the quirks of all the vintage pieces are the real excitement. This office is now a space the homeowner not only works in but truly enjoys.

The sunroom now features a cozy breakfast nook with bright pops of color, touches of glitz and classic furnishings from Klingman’s. A Grass cloth wall covering complements the surrounding view of nature.

The mudroom and laundry room are very wellappointed and do not lack in quality or interest. These spaces are high use in every home, but that does not mean they must be sterile or boring. The laundry room, orignally omitted from the scope of the work, was the last space to be renovated. Once everything else was completed, it was obvious that it needed just as much design as the rest of the home. The fresh colors and bubbly tile add fun to what could otherwise be a boring, utilitarian space. Two renovations, two very different sets of clients and one thing in common: design dilemmas that called for better solutions. Those came from the experience and versatility of the teams behind Jennifer Butler Design and Berghuis Construction. This type of union is proof that there are professionals out there that truly design for the client and not for a particlar look or for themselves. These projects reflect the attention to detail and full personal investment they put into their projects. Both homes have been transformed dramatically and are now thoroughly enjoyed by the clients. That is true success. ❂

Guidelines for Good Landscape Design by Rivertown Landscapes

G

reetings Garden Enthusiasts! As we’re working on design projects for 2019 we’re very excited about what’s happening. While some projects are quite budget driven, some are not. It’s fun to break out of the budget mold and “dream big” once in a while. When we’re working on designs, we enjoy coming up with a plan that is based on every want and desire combined with a dramatic flair. We’ve found that our best projects start with a plan that’s not based on just a number. Here are a few guidelines for good landscape design: COME UP WITH THE DESIGN FIRST AND THEN WORK BACKWARDS Projects can almost always be spread out over time or adjusted by changing individual items within the plan. With that being said, a project design needs to be realistic and affordable. It’s really helpful to have a rough budget and adapt the design to meet the numbers. With that in mind, a little creativity will help you find cost effective solutions to pull it off. Maybe there are items that can be re-used or different ways to get similar results. MAKE SURE EVERY STONE GETS TURNED OVER When you are dealing with multi-faceted designs, make sure you know or are kept aware of what’s current and most cost-effective. Call your subcontractors and suppliers to double check. Maybe you don’t have to remove all the trees or pour a footing. Maybe there’s a more cost-effective paving surface, less expensive plant material or a different way of doing something. PRIORITIZE PHASES Figure out ahead of time what items are needed initially and what things can wait. Things like small plantings, ground cover and lighting might have to wait to be sure primary items can be installed in the proper sequence. Consider Neighbors: Plan construction at a time that’s the least offensive regarding your neighbors. Plan lakefront projects for early spring or fall. Keep your worksites as clean and dust free as possible. Organize your materials so the job doesn’t look messy. Clean off streets.

Make Sure the Design fits the Project: Use materials that are true to the project. Use brick or stone that matches the home’s exterior or trees and plants that are native to the area. Choose foliage and flower colors that complement the home’s colors. As residential landscape design and build professionals, it’s imperative to have our designs follow function so when the project is finished, it’s not only beautiful, but it’s very enjoyable and easy to use.

The MOST Enjoyment Optimize Your Outdoor Living

W

by Visbeen Architects

e’re all looking for a little bit of fresh air, and when the snow melts and the trees begin to bud, spending time outside is much more enjoyable. Creating an outdoor living space can seem challenging and a large task, but we’re here to help – read on for our three trends in outdoor living for 2019. OUTDOOR KITCHENS Whether it’s a grill, a pizza oven, or a bar, having the ability to prep and serve food outdoors is beneficial for numerous reasons. When entertaining, who wants to be inside the home while all their guests are out enjoying the sun? An outdoor kitchen allows more opportunity for entertaining and for spending time with friends and family without missing any of the fun. Another benefit of an outdoor kitchen is getting to keep the mess out of the house. Prep, grill, and serve your burgers all from the same spot. Pour your cocktails right by the pool. You’ll enjoy having the food near the fun and, even more so, you’ll enjoy the easier cleanup. INDOOR/OUTDOOR TRANSITIONS While having a large outdoor space to cultivate is ideal, that’s not always the reality. Outdoor living should be a continuation of your interior space — both stylistically and quite literally — and creating seamless transitions from indoor to outdoor living spaces allows you to have a larger area to entertain and to relax. Door walls are an excellent, versatile option to create definition between a porch or sunroom and an interior room or, when open, easily expand that space. By providing yourself, and your space, with options, you’ll gain access to an outdoor living area that lives larger and gets more use. An aspect to keep in mind are the materials used in the transitionary space of your indoor to outdoor living. Wind, rain, snow, and sun can damage certain materials. Climate should be an integral consideration to the longevity of your space to properly source which items, materials, and surfaces are used in the construction of your outdoor living. WEATHER RESISTANT SPACES We’re not sure if a true weather resistant space exists, but we know a few ways you can get pretty close to it. Living in Michigan, we know first-hand that summer never seems to last long enough. And, however much we convince ourselves rain is needed, it does tend to throw a wrench into outdoor enjoyment. Installing vinyl and screen walls, such as Phantom Screens, are one option that greatly expands the use you can get from your outdoor living spaces. If it’s rainy or windy or if there are pesky mosquitos, closing the screens on a porch or patio will allow you to still enjoy your space. Installing fireplaces or heaters is another option for extending your outdoor living time. As we too well know, the nights will get cool and autumn will sneak up on us. Having the option to heat your outdoor space gives you the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors for longer than just those warm, breezy summer days. Your space doesn’t need to be dependent upon weather — with transitions and with added features you can have a space that works longer into the year than a “traditional” outdoor living space. Having outdoor living that adapts with the weather, to provide an atmosphere that’s right for the conditions, is ideal for maximizing the usage of your outdoor space.

While you can use these trends to guide the planning of your outdoor living space, the most important objective to keep in mind is to create a space where you’ll enjoy spending time. Add your own flair and implement the features that allow you to relax and refresh. Enjoy the planning and enjoy your new space! Built to LAST Outdoor Countertops

utdoor living spaces are the newest in building trends. These spaces are a wonderful bonus to any home. Whether you like to entertain large groups of people or just enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, an outdoor kitchen not only extends your family’s living space, but also improves your home’s looks, resale value, and functionality. When it comes to building an outdoor kitchen, some items are a given, for example a stainless steel barbecue grill, a stone fire pit, and teak patio furniture. Using items made from natural elements, like stone and wood, complement the patio feeling of an outdoor kitchen. These items are also earth-friendly, which is always a bonus. Another item to consider in your outdoor kitchen is the countertop space. Whether you are creating a new kitchen space, or renovating your existing outdoor kitchen or patio, granite is a top choice for surfaces in outdoor living spaces. Granite counters give more than just a new look. Granite is an eco-friendly material that is built to last. It holds up well to the elements, and withstands a range of temperatures from roasting-hot to freezing cold. It is also resistant to fading in the sun, and it needs very little maintenance to stay gorgeous through the years. Keeping it gorgeous is simple. Whether it is being used indoors or outdoors, it is important to make sure a quality sealer is used. This will keep the counters resistant to stains, mold, and mildew and will provide easy maintenance with a simple wipe down with gentle soap and a soft cloth. Resealing will most likely be needed at some point, but it will depend on the type of sealer used, style of granite installed, and the granite’s exposure to the elements. Resealing is relatively simple, and can be done by a professional or the home owner. Outdoor kitchen design isn’t constrained by four straight walls, only by your own imagination. Granite is available in slabs that can be customized for the most creative installations you can invent. One hot trend these days is creating an indoor living space that continues through the back door, into the great outdoors. One way to achieve this is by continuing the counters through a large window, that opens from an indoor kitchen, with a pass thru to the outdoor kitchen. This creates the open feeling of one large area, and also creates convenience to bus drinks and plates directly from inside to outside and vice versa.

Countertops aren’t the only place to install granite on your outdoor living space. Because it is heat resistant and safe, granite is also an ideal material to install around a grill or outdoor cooktop. Hot pans can be set directly on the stone, giving added work space for the avid griller or cook. Granite may also be used to create durable, outdoor dining tables that complement your outdoor kitchen. These tables can be left out yearround without worrying about the weather, unlike tables made from other materials. You can also have the table fabricated to a custom size, to accommodate your own personal space. While selecting your granite, there is a wide range of colors and textures to select from. It is best to choose a more consistent stone, as the consistent patterns will absorb less water and will perform better in freeze and thaw situations. For a surface that is cooler to the touch, you can choose a lighter color granite, as it absorbs less heat. Multiple finish options such as honed, leathered, or polished allow for endless design choices. However, a honed or leathered finish may look more natural in an outdoor setting, as its matte finish creates a subtle

softness. Polished granite has a beautiful shine, and always gives a classic look. Your outdoor kitchen can be as traditional, contemporary, or as exotic as you like and the granite can be the perfect complement to any creative décor and landscaping. It is easy to coordinate granite with other hardscaping products like pavers, tiles, stone ledger, panels and more. Granite will offer beauty, durability and value to any of your outdoor living space projects. Dawn Burgess has been with Great Lakes Granite Works since 2004. or most, the kitchen is a natural gathering space when entertaining. Now that the summer is quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about taking your entertaining outside and using your outdoor space as an extension of your home.

tems are also scalable for ultimate flexibility. You have the option to start with just a pair of satellite speakers and a subwoofer, then expand your system as your needs change or budget allows. There is no space too large or too small to achieve the perfect acoustics for you and your guests.

Whatever your entertaining style may be, there are some ways to instantly improve your outdoor living space for not only you and your family, but for your guests.

OUTDOOR TELEVISION Why stop at a speaker system? An outdoor TV can be a great addition to any space outside. Again, don’t just use a regular indoor TV! Outdoor TVs are built for whatever Mother Nature throws at them including extreme heat, rain, snow or ice. You will also find options tailored to the amount of sun in your viewing area; TVs for full sun, partial sun, or full shade. These specially designed units will protect the picture from being blacked out by the sun and shield internal components from the extremes. Their ultrabright, LED anti-glare screen will also work to ensure that it delivers exceptional outdoor viewing quality no matter the time of day or season.

OUTDOOR KITCHEN Since most entertaining revolves around the food, a great investment is an outdoor kitchen. The options are nearly endless and can be flexible to your budget. Whatever you decide, it’s important to invest in quality products that will withstand the elements. Grills come in a variety of price points, and options. Spending a little more for a grill that comes pre-assembled, has a lifetime warranty, will cook more evenly and performs well in any season is a better investment for your space overall. Choosing a model that has the ability to cook at both a higher temperature with a searing option, and a lower temperature with a rotisserie will benefit the chef. For an unparalleled level of convenience outdoors, you can complement your grill with appliances and cabinetry. When doing so, we recommend finding products that are specifically regulated to keep safe temperatures, have doors that can effectively seal out the elements and are made of high-quality stainless steel. When adding refrigeration, it is necessary to ensure that the unit is rated for outdoor use. There is also a big difference between refrigeration used solely for beverages, and food safe refrigeration. If you plan to keep meat, dairy, or other perishable items in your outdoor refrigerator, it needs to be able to keep a set temperature, even in extreme heat. Another important element in outdoor kitchen design is the material used on the interior of the

units. When you return to your outdoor kitchen after a long winter, there is a chance that mold will have set in. Appliances with stainless steel interiors can easily be cleaned and food ready, however, the porous nature of plastic interiors means it can never be completely cleaned of all mold residue. OUTDOOR SPEAKERS Now that you have the food covered, let’s focus on music. Your interior speakers are not designed for outdoor use and you can do better than the portable options. With specially designed units, you can enjoy the superior audio performance you’re accustomed to inside, outdoors; hidden beautifully within your landscaping. These systems are specifically designed to withstand the elements year-round and do not need to be reassembled at the start of the season. Some sys-

YOUR PERFECT FIT As you can see, your options are certainly not limited when it comes to outdoor entertaining. The most important part is to consider what will be the best fit for your specific space and lifestyle. Once you have some ideas in mind, it’s best to work with a professional who is trained to think of things you may be missing. This will leave you more time to focus on the fun aspects of the project, and free you from having to think about the small but important details for making it all work together seamlessly.
