POLICE

Cottage Grove’s fi rst police department consisted of Samuel Veatch, who was elected as the fi rst town marshal in 1887.

Today, the town’s police department consists of the Police Chief, Operations Captain, Support Services Captain, Administrative Manager, (15) sworn Police Offi cers, (3) Reserve Police Offi cers, (2) community service offi cers, records coordinator, evidence coordinator, (5) Communication Specialists, Peer Court coordinator, Police Chaplain, and (3) volunteers.

These staffers provide 24-hour/seven days a week police coverage and 911 dispatch center. The department maintains a 16-bed municipal jail and provides police services for the municipal court.

FIRE AND AMBULANCE

South Lane County Fire & Rescue is proud to provide 24/7/365 service to the Cottage Grove area. SLCFR provides fi re protection to a 132-square mile area encompassing the cities of Creswell and Cottage Grove. The area served for EMS is over 800 square miles. In 2019 SLCFR handled over 4400 calls for service. The District is governed by a fi ve member elected Board of Directors and is run by the Fire Chief who is are responsible to the Fire Chief.

The Cottage Grove Station has career staffi ng supplemented by Reserves and Student Firefi ghters 24/7/365. Cottage Grove (Station 201) has up to fi ve career personnel on 24 hours a day. Staffi ng includes a Division Chief, Captain, Engineer and two Firefi ghters all of which are Oregon Paramedics. The Fire Chief and two Administrative also work from Station 201. The station houses an engine, ladder, heavy brush, water tender, command vehicle and two ambulances.

Those located within the city limits of Cottage Grove enjoy an ISO 2 rating as of 2016. Most of the area immediately surrounding the city has an ISO 4 rating. This is a vast improvement over the previous rating of 5 in the city and 9 outside the city.

Peer Court Peer Court is a successful youth-offender diversion program, designed to provide consequences for juvenile offenders and reduce repeat offenses. Peer Court is administered by the Cottage Grove Police Department. It’s a partnership between the city and Lane County Department of Youth Services, with a continuing working relationship with South Lane School District.
