Autumn 2014
Welcome... News, views and inspiration from the Anne Furbank Group Autumn 2014
What an amazing year we have had so far. Our Spring/Summer season was the best we have experienced for some time (recession over?!) and Autumn/Winter has started buoyantly. This year we have been busy promoting our brands ‘in store’ with mini fashion shows and have been overwhelmed by the response and loyalty you have shown. Thank you. We hope to do more! We are sad to be losing two of our long serving and loyal members of staff who are retiring. Bobbie Lambert and Jane Bayes have decided to hang up their high heels and fancy frocks to relax at home (or abroad) with their families. We will miss them. We still have a team that totals an incredible 267 years service with Anne Furbank Fashions. You will have seen some new faces in the hotel as well as those more familiar to you including two members who have been with us from the start! Thank you Margaret and Jan. Time does fly and before we know it, it will be Christmas but we have a lot to cram in before then, with events in the shop and the hotel, so be the first to know and sign up to receive emails to make sure you don’t miss out.

Complimentary Cuppa Our girly cards by Berni Parker have been incredibly popular. We guess you are buying them to give to friends and family, so we thought we would give you, your very own piece of Berni Parker. One of Berni’s original pieces of artwork has been put on a beautiful piece of Royal Worcester to produce a Fine Bone China Mug as our gift to you. The ‘Fountain of Youth’ artwork is typical of Berni’s design, beautifully feminine and full of life which will bring a smile to your face every time you make that cuppa. To receive your Royal Worcester China Mug simply come into the shop during the week of our Autumn Launch, Monday 8th – Saturday 13th September and you will receive your beautiful mug, free of charge, with your purchases.
Autumn Launch However much we hate to see the back of summer there is something welcoming about the Autumn season. The changing seasons are reflected in the fashions, with colours becoming more earthy, natural fabrics of wool and cashmere giving a sense of warmth and security and a certain elegance returning to our wardrobe as the often smarter looks of Autumn take over. Our Autumn launch in September promises to be brimming with collections that you will adore, covet and get you wishing for those cooler days to arrive. Monday 8th September is when it starts for a whole week of bubbly, models and the most wonderful complimentary gift for you to take away with your new purchases. For six days, until Saturday 13th September, our models will be on hand to show the new collections and give you some inspiration with the new looks and fashions that the designers have created.

Season’s highlights What is so great about fashion is although we are led by designers and their brands to explore new styles and colours, it is up to the individual to put their own interpretation as to how a look should go together. Inspirational style icons do this with ease and fill magazine and newspaper pages with their stylish new looks. Most of us need a little more guidance and that is where our collections and staff come in.
Marc Cain Marc Cain
We draw from collections around the world, buy a broad selection to have in the shop and then our staff can help you put together your wardrobe that will suit you and your lifestyle.
Cosy neutrals
There are some definite new looks and highlights of the season which will give your wardrobe an update, your spirits a boost and you an up to date look.
Autumn conjures up an earthy image of crackling fires, kicking piles of fallen leaves and misty mornings. Our cosy neutrals collections encompass all that is mother nature not only in colour but in texture and print. Feathers, animals and even landscapes have been printed onto fabrics to turn you into a warm, walking work of art.
Abro
Basler and Betty Barclay do this very well with Basler’s feather print subtle enough to look like texture on a fabric but look closer and the detailed feather print has such depth it draws you in. Betty Barclay has used mocha colouring in one of their collections but given it a lift with gold threads and tiny sequin detailing. It’s subtle but deliciously absorbing.

A touch of
Tartan
Fashion designers take inspiration from many different things, whether it is countries, cultures, music or politics. Politics I hear you cry. Yes, even politics plays it part in the mind of a fashion designer, which may account for the touch of tartan that has infiltrated the collections this season. With the Scottish vote for independence looming, tartan is topical. Of course it could have nothing to do with Politics and the throw back to the Punk era playing more of a part. But do not worry we will not be dressing you in short kilts, safety pins and bovver boots - our collections are a lot more subtle. It is just a ‘touch’ of tartan but black and red is definitely one of the season’s highlight colour combinations. It is a bold, clean and sharp look, and the red really does add a lift to the inevitable black, which is a standard Autumn wardrobe essential. Gerry Weber have softened it a little by teaming their red with chocolate instead of black which makes a nice change and pulls in that mother earth look as well.

Silver lining We haven’t seen metallics since the 80s and in tribute to this dynamic fashion decade they have been rejuvenated in a less obvious way. Silver beats gold on the clothing front. However, whatever your preference when it comes to bling, you stick with it and you won’t go far wrong.
Shiny silver and matt silver, it really doesn’t matter - what does matter is what it is teamed with. For a starker contrast go with navy, which is again prevalent this autumn, and gives it a sporty feel. For a prettier, more feminine look, choose collections which have blended it with blush, pistachio, ochre and biscuit. Marc Cain and Marc Aurel captures the softer look while Gerry Weber goes for sharper contrast.

Metallics in accessories are a great addition to your wardrobe. A navy shoe makes a nice alternative to black and add silver as a bag and jewellery.

Remember the fashion
decades
Looking back through old photographs not only brings back memories of events with friends and family but it can also be quite entertaining when reliving the fashions of the different decades. We’ve all lived through different fashion eras, sometimes twice over, when designers turn back the clock for inspiration in creating a new twist to an old look. Some of those fashions we may choose to forget but there are defining moments in time when fashion reflected the mood of the country, the changing attitudes in society and the freedom of the individual to experiment with different looks. Do you have a fashion decade favourite, an era you would like to return to because of the fashion? If so, let us know and we will add it to our fashion decade monitor. You can tweet us @annefurbank or send a message via our facebook page simply search for Anne Furbank. You never know people power may well be able to influence the designers for their future collections.

There is usually a story behind the creation of a new brand and when a collection remains true to its origins it gives it a heart and makes you warm to it all the more. Two of the new brands we are delighted to introduce this Autumn epitomise brands that have heart.

Gushlow and Cole was created by friends Emma Gushlow and Katrina Cole who met at school at the age of four and have worked together since graduating from The London College of Fashion. Gushlow and Cole produce a collection based around shearling - a spin off from the Cole family business which specialised in traditional English manufacturing of this product.
All the skins used are a by product and Gushlow and Cole take care in using ethical tanneries and make sure that every item is hand made in England.
So what did we buy to show you? We bought their truly beautiful shearling and knit gilets. Some long, some short, in soft fawns and powder colours, all so cosy you won’t want to take them off. 12

Lexington is a brand that is inspired by New England although its creators are Swedish. There is a small place named Lexington just outside Boston, this was the place for the start of the American War of Independence. It is a place of historical significance and traditions. The brand follows the tradition of the American East Coast and consequently has a distinct casual look. It’s not all stars and stripes but there is a definite American vibe running through the collection. The Lexington brand is a complete lifestyle brand and although we can’t bring you the bedspreads and towels, we may treat you to a few of the delicious homewares.

They have the same technology as the NYDJ with the slimming effect but in a jersey legging. We’ve got the basics for you but have also bought into their more innovative designs including a denim legging, a leather panel legging and a snake print legging. Don’t worry these are leggings for women, perfect with tunics and a pair of winter boots.

Vilagallo is a Spanish brand of fabulous woven jackets and coats. A little bit quirky in their styling with bold checks, contrasting collars and linings, and detailed buttoning. Some styles harp back to the classic tailed riding jacket while others are inspired by the Crombie coat. With prices starting at just ÂŁ229 these are great pick up pieces to give your Autumn wardrobe a real boost.

PARTY
Summer Party Messing about on the river – what a great way to spend a summer evening. Obviously good company and a lot of laughs add to the occasion and the staff from the shop provided that, at the Anne Furbank summer gathering. Luckily no-one took a dip in the river during canoe races although there was a lot of meandering from one bank to another rather than a straight line to the finish. Panic did slightly set in when one pairing was faced with a river boat turning into the marina!
16
“Luckily no-one took a dip in the river” Croquet and horseshoe hoopla were slightly less dangerous games during the evening but no less competitive. All that energy expended, the girls were delighted when Jason from Buckden Butchers turned up with a mini hog roast, crackling, stuffing, rolls and apple sauce – delicious! All washed down with a glass of wine – perfect.

Dress to impress Dresses are one of the most versatile items of clothing you can have in your wardrobe, particularly for the Autumn season. Depending on the accessories you put with it you can make a dress work for both day and evening. Teamed with heels and dressy jewellery a dress can become cocktail wear. Long boots, opaque tights and a wool scarf and the same dress can work just as well for daywear. Designers are fulfilling our desires to have a dress in the wardrobe and are also offering us more choice on shape, fabrics, prints and colours. Joseph Ribkoff has ventured into wool jersey fabrics for the Autumn so that some of their dresses can cross easily from day to evening. French designer Didier Parakian brings a vibrancy to his dress collection, mixing fabrics, textures and prints to make his designs really stand out from the crowd. As we saw in the Spring collection, Xenia work hard on their unusual shapes to add the point of difference to their dresses. Designers are also listening to the customer and providing sleeves, and aline shapes to accommodate those of us who are more pear than string bean! So take your pick - there are a whole host of brands that have worked hard to bring you a great dress for the Autumn.

A bride among us We help dress hundreds of ladies each year as ‘mother’s of’ and guests of weddings. Some of the AF team have even had the experience firsthand, seeing their own children walk down the aisle, but it is a first to have our very own bride among us. There were whoops of delight when Emma announced her engagement to Steve earlier this year. We had a bride!. Luckily Anna, who worked with us for 10 years and left to set up her own bridal shop, was there to offer her expertise when helping Emma choose a wedding dress. ‘It really wasn’t what I was looking for and if it hadn’t have been for Anna persuading me to try it on I would have bypassed it. I should have known, as I have surprised many of my customers in the past by twisting their arm to try something on,’ said Emma. ‘As soon as I put it on I knew it was the one.’ Emma celebrated her wedding with close family and friends over a weekend in Madeley, Crewe. The celebrations continued closer to home at a picnic party where all the girls in the shop could congratulate her and Steve on their wedding.

“Luxury fabrics of silk and lace add to the glamour”
Autumn 2014
glamour Autumn and winter are definitely the seasons of glamour. Maybe it is to pull us out of the doldrums as the days get shorter. The build up to Christmas certainly gives us an excuse for all that sparkles and shines. Feminine, elegant designs are certainly this year’s key look with shapes taking more inspiration from the style icons of the 40s and 50s rather than the more haphazard looks of the 80s. Aline skirts with cinched waists and sweetheart necklines are truly girly. Luxury fabrics of silk and lace add to the glamour, with embellishment being kept subtle, leaving you to add as much, or as little, sparkle as you want. Bernshaw, Carina, Olvi The Lace Collection have all created their own styles within these boundaries, with some stunning results.

It’s the
Boot season It’s time to ease your feet back into hibernation with our selection of this season’s best boot buys. Whether it is riding boots, Chelsea boots, leather or suede boots the collection from K&S covers it all. Their leathers are superb and they are completely with the fashion but never a slave to it. Detailing in design, whether it is with zips or stitching, show the thought and care that goes into making every single pair of boots. Long boots are still a great look with short skirts and opaque tights or worn over leggings or skinny jeans giving that grown up preppy look. And ankle boots aren’t just confined to be worn under trousers. With added embellishment and slimmer ankle opening they can look great worn with skirts. The fabulous snake effect brogue is a boot compromise - all the comfort and security of a boot but in a shoe.

Fond farewell We are sad to say that two of our long-serving members of the team are hanging up their heels and enjoying a well deserved retirement. Bobbie Lambert and Jane Bayes have a combined service with us of almost 24 years. With children, grand children, a desire to travel and enjoy more time at home, Jane and Bobbie have decided to say their farewells to Anne Furbank. ‘We are so lucky to have such a fabulous team,’ said Annie, ‘a lot of them having been with us a long time. When someone leaves it is very sad but having said that, I am delighted for them as I know they will enjoy the extra time they have.’ ‘I thank them both very much for all the hard work they have given Anne Furbank over the years and I know all the girls will miss their humour and the very funny stories they tell.’ Bobbie isn’t quite cutting all her connections and will be coming back on a seasonal basis to help in our busy wedding season.

We all love Joseph It is one of the favourites among the staff and now the brand has broken new ground attracting an even younger fan. Alex Furbank fell in love with a Joseph Ribkoff jumpsuit when she modelled for one of Annie’s talks for the Lady Taverners, so much so she didn’t want to take it off. Luckily for Alex her Granny spoilt her for an early birthday present and let her keep it. ‘I love it,’ said Alex. ‘It feels so comfortable, I can’t wait to wear it for my birthday party.’ Joseph Ribkoff was also the outfit of choice at two the team’s special events. Debbie Daniels wore her navy dress by Ribkoff at the graduation of her daughter Gaby and Karen wore her brightly coloured Ribkoff dress at her son, Cameron’s, graduation.

New man at the top We are delighted to welcome Richard O’Leary as the new General Manager of the George Hotel and Brasserie. He will be a familiar face to a lot of you by now as he took up his post in April and has his feet firmly under the bar, the brasserie, the kitchen and the rooms! A career in hospitality has seen him working in large corporate hotels, small independents, and even a stint looking after the visitors to the Woburn Estates restaurants. We managed to rescue him from the lions and are delighted to put him in charge of the reins at The George.
Visit England Once again we have been awarded a Gold Award in our recent Quality in Tourism inspection by Visit England. We are thrilled that our percentage rating within our three star category has crept up to 89% one of the highest scores in the region.

Hard day at work It wasn’t the usual day at work for Sam and Charlotte who were both treated to a trip to the Champagne house of Taittinger following our terrific 10 year birthday celebration when for the month of April we turned back the hand of time on the price of a glass of champagne. The Taittinger Nocturne NV was incredibly popular and not surprising as the taste is fantastic and the price per glass of £6.75 was just too tempting. It was an early start but the girls were given access to the vines, the processes and the incredible cellars of this historic Champagne house. To ensure the information was well and truly digested the whole experience was washed down with a glass of champagne.

Fresh, seasonal and local Our chefs work hard to serve up seasonal, tasty, delicious food so that you enjoy each and every mouthful. This only works with a combination of the skill of the chef and the quality of the product they use. ‘All of our suppliers are as passionate about their products as we are about our hotel,’ said General Manager, Richard O’Leary. ‘If you have that passion you care about what you are doing and where that product is going to end up.’ One of the highlights each week is the visit from Premier Cheese, a mobile cheese cave the chefs climb in to choose from a vast array of cheeses. ‘It is perfect for our cheese board,’ said Chef, Akil. ‘We get the chance to add variety to what we offer. We can see, smell and taste the cheese before we make our selection.’ A little closer to home you may find the odd Furbank produce making its way into the kitchen. ‘We have four chickens at home,’ said Rebecca Furbank. ‘Try as we might we can’t quite get through 28 eggs a week so I do bring any spares in to the hotel. As all our eggs are free range I’m not sure you would spot the difference but I do feel satisfied that they are being enjoyed.’
‘I’ve added a couple of gooseberry bushes and a fig tree to my collection so hopefully next year we could have homegrown fig tarte tatin on the menu!’.
Traditional brewer As a family business ourselves it is nice to know the family tale behind our suppliers and Mauldons Brewery is a perfect example. The Mauldens family first became involved in brewing in 1795 when Anna Maria Mauldon began brewing at the Bull Hotel in Ballingdon near Sudbury.
As the business prospered, additional pubs and hotels were purchased and a wine and spirit business was incorporated. In 1960 it was sold to This also goes for the glut of plums, courgettes, basil and Greene King and the Mauldons family mint that grow in abundance each year. ‘I am very much a business came to an end. That was casual gardener,’ said Rebecca. ‘I until 1981 when Peter Mauldon, the love the preparation but I couldn’t great grandson of Anna Maria decided claim that my vegetable patch is to re-establish the family tradition and immaculate, I tend to leave a lot to started a brewery in Sudbury once mother nature with the odd bit of again. By the end of 1982 the first weeding.’ barrels of beer were being brewed again in Sudbury by a Mauldon. Although Peter has now retired and another couple, Steve and Alison Sims, have taken over, the traditional brewing methods remain and at the George we look forward to the traditional ales being delivered. 34
