MELODY MILLER | JUBILEE 2 0 TOTA L PIEC ES | 20 UNBLEAC HED COT TO N DE L I V E R Y IN JANUARY 2017 In Jubilee, Melody Miller imagined what it would be like to get ready for a fun summery block party. She painted and drew watercolor balloons, tall city buildings, and retro makeup, including elements like halftone dots and offset registration as a nod to vintage screenprinting. She also used layered painterly transparencies, neons and metallics for added texture, and included some of her much-loved vintage motifs.

In The City depicts illustrations of timeless tall buildings and houses, the perfect place for a neighborhood block party. Melody added some of her favorite vintage motifs that also appear in other prints in the collection.

Part of going to a party is getting ready! All Made Up is like looking into a vintage drawer filled with the most adorable retro makeup. Like many prints in the collection, this one features the look of purposely offset registration as a nod to the look of vintage screen printed fabrics.

To create Balloons, Melody sketched ladies in dresses inspired by looking through a vintage catalogue. Then she painted watercolor balloons and layered them on top for extra dimensionality.

Each of the three Confetti colorways features an ombre wash across the width of the fabric with a contrast color band at one end. The gradient of color could be cut up in a myriad of ways for endless project possibilities, and the contrast color could be strategically placed along garment features like zippers. Metallic gold ink adds shimmer and extra interest. 6

This dramatic Jubilee triangle quilt might look complicated, but looks can be deceiving - a few blocks are repeated and rotated in a way that creates a totally random look. The ombre wash Confetti print adds depth with subtle variations in color, and pops of gold metallic ink contribute a little shimmer and dimensionality.

ALEXIA ABEGG | FLOWER SHOP 2 4 TOTA L PI EC E S | 19 U N B LE AC H E D COT TO N, 3 R AYO N, 2 CAN VASES DEL IVERY IN J A N UA R Y 2017

Alexia draws inspiration from a Mexican flower market in her newest collection, Flower Shop. In a perfect follow-up to her previous collection, Alexia once again uses hand painting, stamping and drawing to achieve the richness and depth of a handcrafted look, then combines it with the watercolor paintings she is known for. Featured motifs include folk embroidery, amulets, and wildflowers.

In Flowers For Sale, little handpainted cats are selling all different kinds of sweet wildflowers at the flower market. The varying blooms become repeated motifs throughout the rest of the collection. This print is offered in two colorways on our unbleached cotton.

In Dala Friends, little animals dot an unbleached ground, all wearing traditional blankets on their backs. When creating this print, Alexia used a soft and gentle color palette, imagining that it would be the perfect fabric for baby and toddler sewing projects.

Alexia carved many different stamps and hand printed with them to create Charms. Half moons, tiny owls, dots and other abstract shapes are all reminiscent of traditional amulets that might be worn to keep one safe.

This print, inspired by traditional Mexican embroidery, is a collaboration between Alexia and Rashida. After drawing the flowers together, Alexia created a watercolor wash for the background, which was achieved in production by using multiple screens to stack translucent layers of ink on top of one another.

RASHIDA COLEMAN-HALE | KUJIRA & STAR 2 1 TOTA L PI ECE S | 6 COT TON, 13 UN BLE ACHE D COT TON, 2 CANVASES D EL I VER Y I N JAN UARY 2017

In a story that Rashida created, ‘Kujira and Star’ tells the tale of a baby whale named Kujira (which means whale in Japanese) and his best friend, a starfish named Star. Star is so sad that he has only traveled around his little reef and longs to see more of the ocean and what wonders exist in the world above him. Kujira decides to take his best friend on a little tour around the waters of Japan! We wonder what they’ll see!

Introducing, Kujira! The star of Rashida’s little story does a little victory dance all over unbleached cotton. This print is perfect for everything from tiny fussy cutting to entire quilt backings.

Rashida achieved this print by hand carving a stamp with an unconventional wave motif. The textures from the stamp combined with unbleached cotton make this simple print bold and exciting.

In collaboration with Melody, Rashida created an illustrated map of the wonderful sights our daring duo traveled to see, including some iconic Japanese landmarks. Hand drawn illustrations, vintage Japanese stamps and magazine ads bring this story to life on our 100% unbleached cotton.

Who knew whales didn’t wear shirts? A fun array of folded up shirts with sweet, quirky prints make for a fun and off beat coordinating print to the collection.

KIM KIGHT | YOURS TRULY 1 8 TOTA L PIEC ES | 14 COT TO N, 4 UNBLEAC HED COT TO N DE L I V E R Y IN JANUARY 2017 Sewing is fundamentally an act of love. Starting with heart-motif dresses and feedsacks from her extensive personal vintage fabric stash, Kim Kight created a collection that offers a chance to literally sew love into your creations. A sweet poem along the selvage is perfect for quilt backings, garment tags, or anywhere you might want to leave a little love note.

Tanuki is a raccoon-like critter who appears in Japanese folklore. They are shapeshifters but also are known for being gullible and absentminded. Kim imagined this silly tanuki falling in love with a flower as it blooms in spring.

Strawberries are an enduring symbol of love and courtship, and they are a timeless motif for fabric. Kim adapted this print from a vintage apron.

This vintage dress fabric, with its rose-like flowers and loop-de-loops, is a perfect abstract representation of being head-over-heels in love.

What would a love-themed collection be without hearts? Heartburst was adapted from a vintage dress fabric. This modern version is printed with neon pink ink on unbleached cotton, and the other colorway uses gold ink on navy. 36

SARAH WAT TS | SLEEP TIGHT 2 3 TOTA L PI EC E S | 25 COT TO N, 6 U N B LE AC H E D COT TO N, 1 CAN VAS DEL IVERY IN J A N UA R Y 2017

Sleep Tight is a fun exploration of what babies might dream about. Sarah’s signature illustrations of animals come to life as bunnies, owls, tigers and more, and the neutral color palette is on point with the current trend of modern nurseries. Supporting prints feature gold and pearlescent metallic inks and have a versatility that extends well beyond sewing for babies.

Sarah created a large panel print with a 24 repeat that is perfect for wholecloth quilts and other bedding. It can also be cut apart to make mobiles or softies, and it comes in two colorways on our quilting cotton.

In Night Owl, stylized, whimsical birds fly sweetly across the sky, undoubtedly singing lullabyes to dreamers below. This print features gold metallic ink, which adds a nice dimensionality to the limited color palette.

Prickles features another dreamland character - a friendly little hedgehog! This print comes in two colorways, one unbleached and one regular quilting cotton, and in a larger scale on our cotton-linen canvas.

Stardust is a strong and versatile supporting print with a little something extra. Four colorways of scattered dots are printed in gold and pearlescent inks, imparting a shimmer and texture that makes this print a great choice for practically any project imaginable. 46

RIFLE PAPER CO. | WOND ERL AND 32 TOTAL PIECE S: 19 COT TO N, 3 U NB L EAC H E D COT TO N, 2 L AWN, 3 R AYO N, 5 C A N VAS D EL I V E RY IN E N D O F FEB RUA R Y 2017/M A R C H 2017

Wonderland is the second collection from guest designer Anna Bond of Rifle Paper Company. Anna was asked by Puffin Books to hand-illustrate the 150th anniversary edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, and it is from this stack of roughly 80 original hand paintings that the fabric collection derives. With signature Rifle Paper Co. style, Anna’s painted illustrations jump off the page and onto 32 high quality Cotton+Steel fabrics, including a healthy dose of lawns, canvases and Rifle floral rayons that were so successful in her previous collection. In Wonderland, Alice falls through the rabbit hole to a world of tea parties and enchanted forests, meeting a curious cast of characters along the way. The collection perfectly captures the playful magic and mystery that make any rendition of this literary classic a perennial favorite.

The Wonderland print comes from the book's cover art. It's offered in two colorways on quilting cotton, and it is also blown up to twice the size on two canvas colorways. Metallic gold accents add to the rich, tapestry-like fabric.

Wonderland features four soft and drapey rayon prints. The two Enchanted Forest rayon colorways feature a map of Wonderland that comes from the book's end papers; the two other rayons are signature Rifle florals.

Procession is a parade of some of Wonderland's favorite characters. This is the first time Anna is incorporating unbleached cotton into her range of fabrics; it was a perfect choice for this collection because the creamy color is the exact shade of a much-loved book page.

You can't visit Wonderland without a tea party. Mad Tea Party is offered in two colorways and features precarious stacks of teacups and delicious cakes, ready for the Mad Hatter's next soiree. 56

QUICKER BY THE DOZEN 69

BLOCK OF THE MONTH

DEVELOPED BY THIMBLEBERRIES, INC. SOCIAL MEDIA HASHTAGS

#quickerbythedozen #blockofthemonth

Cotton + Steel is honored to be collaborating with Lynette Jensen, one of RJR Fabrics’ most prolific and successful designers, to release a Block of the Month pattern called “Quicker By The Dozen.” Lynette Jensen is a pioneer in our industry. She was one of the first to create a Block of the Month program for quilt shops, and her Thimbleberries BOM ran for 22 years with over 300,000 quilters participating. Thimbleberries changed the face of the quilt pattern industry, becoming the benchmark for easy to follow and clear quilt patterns. Lynette has always felt that she wants every person who picks up one of her patterns to be successful. Cotton+Steel shares the belief that sewing should be accessible and inclusive. Clear instructions and well written patterns are timeless. They transcend taste and trend, and they offer a reliable resource for passing techniques on to those less experienced, regardless of anyone’s individual fabric preferences, regardless of if it’s Cotton+Steel or Thimbleberries. Because either way, it’s the same craft, same project, just a different stash.

Stores will have the option of ordering a 50-pc display or a 100-pc display. Cotton+Steel Thread will be available to order beginning with Fall 2016 Quilt Market in Houston and will ship in March 2017.

AVAILABLE EARLY 2017 Cotton+Steel is thrilled to have designed both 2017 BERNINA 350 Special Edition sewing machines. We are honored to be collaborating with a company known for its quality, design innovation, and heritage. During the design process, we combined many well-loved C+S motifs from multiple seasons and multiple designers to create two unique but complimentary machines. The first design is called ‘I Sewing’ (top left). It features an assortment of sewing accessories in fun and bright colors, including the well known and wise saying, “Measure twice, cut once.” The second machine design is called ‘Hello Lovely’ (bottom left). It showcases two beautiful birds (we like to think of them as lovebirds) flitting through vibrant vintage-inspired flowers. Both machines will be available at BERNINA stores in early 2017.
