The end of the green shed
For many years our base at To Toro boat ramp has been the big green shed, but that is about to come to an end. After many years of faithful service the roof iron and cladding is now somewhat past its best and needs replacing. Fortunately for us NZ Steel have offered to supply us replacement material to re-roof the shed free of charge, so we will only have to pay to get it installed, and it looks like we’ll be getting a great deal on that from local contractors as well. The only thing is that the material that NZ Steel have in stock is dark blue, so there may be need to be a name change.
We have also secured some replacement flooring for the shed and hopefully as soon as the new roof has been fitted we can get the flooring replaced as well. If all goes to plan this work should be carried out before Christmas.
Road repairs on Te Toro Road
If you haven’t been to the boat ramp in the last week or so you may not be aware that Te Toro road is currently closed. This is to facilitate repair of the slip that happened in the big storm nearly two years ago, so is a well overdue repair and it’s great that it is getting done before the summer season gets fully underway. But the road will be closed for several more weeks. Until then you will have to use Cooper Road to access the boat ramp. Do take extra care as the turning into Cooper Road is on a bad bend with limited visibility and there are some tight bends on Cooper Road as well.
We’re always looking for items to include, so if you have a fishing report, some photos, or just a good story to tell please drop me an email on kevin@nzsteele.com
Counties / Clevedon Interclub
The yearly interclub competition between Clevedon and Counties took place over the weekend of the 9th and 10th of November. The heaviest three fish in each category are scored as 3 points, 2 points and one point and the total points added up. This year was a record win for Clevedon, in fact we struggled to even get on the scoreboard. The final score was 26 points to Clevedon and 4 points to Counties. There’s always next year.
Here are a couple of great catches. Carl Hill caught this trout at Tarawera and Chad caught this trevally surfcasting at Wattle bay, it weighed in at 2.95Kg.

Pod and Reel: The NZSFC Podcast
Welcome to the Pod and Reel podcast, presented by the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, a national body with over 50 affiliated clubs across New Zealand, and over 37,000 members. Since 1957, NZSFC has focussed on setting standards for responsible fishing practices, collating records, organising events like the Nationals, and supporting its affiliated fishing clubs. This podcast dives deep into the history, the people, and the clubs that make up our fishing community. We’ll explore the highs and lows of fishing and learn from mistakes made, striving to be better, safer, and smarter when we interact with the water. With 15,000 kilometres of coastline, New Zealand’s fishing history is rich with stories of the tussle between us and the sea.
Join us as we delve into these topics and more on the Pod and Reel podcast, your gateway to the world of all things fishing in New Zealand.
