How does a radio station in rural Kentucky post annual radiothon totals that rival many major markets? While there’s more than one answer to that question, the biggest one came to light at last month’s St. Jude Country Cares Seminar (CAW 10/28). In short: Local celebrity challenge hours.
The station in question is WBKR/ Owensboro, KY , which raised $334,921 for St. Jude during its February radiothon. In Memphis, PD Chad Benefield told panel attendees that reaching that number in an area with a metro population of roughly 113,000 people has been a progression since the challenge concept was instituted around 2010.
Totes My GOAT: “We were following the St. Jude playbook, doing four elements an hour, but I knew there was much more potential from our listeners,” Benefield says. “[Former morning cohost] Jaclyn Graves and I brainstormed and decided a number of things. First, our other air staff members were not going to be on the air – we were going to do all 26 hours with no regular programming at all. We were shutting off everything that wasn’t St. Jude. No regular music beyond the story songs.
“We also decided to get people involved who we can educate and make part of what we consider to be our St. Jude family. We would brainstorm people in the community and surrounding areas – and we still do – who have big groups of friends or fans. Local celebrities – it could be a local firefighter, politician or band leader. If they have a big network of people, we have them say, ‘Hey, I’m going to be on the St. Jude Radiothon from 11am until noon. Tune in and join me in raising money for St. Jude.’ We learned very quickly that those people put money on the tote board.”
For example, Emily and Mark Shelton. “They are tremendous local musicians who’ve played all over Kentucky and beyond,” Benefield says.“They come in and do an hour for us, and Emily always sets the goal but never tells Mark until they go on the air.

Spotlighting inductees ahead of the Nov. 11 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala continues with Liz Rose. Born and raised in the Dallas area, it was an unconventional path to songwriting for Rose. Her husband moved the family to Nashville to pursue his songwriting career, but the creative environment soon brought out Rose’s own talents. After initial success with songs like Gary Allan’s “Songs About Rain,” her late bloom came to full flower thanks to a chance encounter with a teenage girl. Collaborations with young Taylor Swift led not just to the top of the country and pop charts, but also earned her the 2010 Grammy for Best Country Song – “White Horse.” See the profiles of fellow inductees Victoria Shaw here and Al Anderson here
I always loved songs. I could hear a song once and sing it back to you; it was always the words that got me. The first song I remember is Skeeter Davis’ “The End Of The World.”

I love that song so much. Of course there were the Beatles, and a lot of the Tammy Wynette songs like “‘Til I Can Make It On My Own.” Those songs moved me when I was a little kid.
I didn’t start writing until we moved to Nashville. I wrote a couple of songs with some friends because they were all songwriters, but I wasn’t. I got into publishing and song plugging, and then I started signing writers and helping them. I would just wander in a room and ask what they were stuck on and give them a bridge. It was weird.
One of the writers said, “Why don’t we try writing a song?” and that’s what happened. I fell in love with it, and for some reason I was okay at it. I worked hard and wrote every day and got better. I was like 37 or 38, my kids were in school, they thought I’d lost my mind.
I didn’t dream that I could do it because I thought you had to play an instrument to write. I quickly found out you didn’t have to; people would do that for me. That freed me up to write with anyone. I usually can’t do anything until I hear someone play piano or guitar, but the second I hear a melody, I’ve got words.
Taylor was a genius at 14. I played a writer’s round at a label, which I had never done before, she heard me do a couple of songs and asked me if I would write with her. There’s nothing like being in a room with her and watching her mind work.
I can’t even explain it. Her imagination, her way of telling her story and letting it flow. I learned so much from her –that songwriting is the emotion and the truth, and that there are no rules; there’s nothing perfect about it. She also taught me how to write with artists, to let them be the artists in the room and do their thing. While I didn’t know too much about songwriting, I was smart enough to let her be her, and that’s why it worked.
Southwest did a special flight to Miami earlier this month, and I surprised everybody on the plane. We sang some Taylor songs; it was so much fun. It’s crazy what I get to do. Being in a stadium of 60,000 people and hearing them sing two or three of your songs – I still stand there and cry. It’s about being a part of something that brings so much joy and hits people. Those are the “pinch me” moments. This is why we write songs.
I have concerns about the future generation of songwriters. I hope that if the next Kris Kristofferson comes to town, we recognize them, and they get nurtured. My next couple of years are going to be making sure the younger generation knows where this craft came from, and they know not everything is manufactured on a computer by eight people in a room.
I can’t worry about TikTok and all that. I’m not going to fight it; I’m just going to do my thing and nurture as many young songwriters as I can while I celebrate the songwriters of the past. I do love the fact that kids are getting exposed to so much more music than they ever have. There’s no way there will ever be too much music. –Chris Huff
Congratulations to Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord), Adrian Michaels, Shelly Hargis, Scotty O’Brien and the Stoney Creek promotion team on taking “I Am Not Okay” to No. 1. This is Mr. Roll’s sixth visit to the top of the chart, and fifth as a lead artist. He also becomes just the seventh artist in history to launch a career with five consecutive No. 1s. The song’s 9,890 spins this week mark the second highest total in Mediabase history, topped only by the 9,967 spins for “Cowgirls” the week ending July 20 this year. Songwriters are Taylor Phillips, Ashley Gorley, Casey Brown and DeFord. Additionally, the song is Gorley’s 80th career chart-topper.
The Stoney Creek crew also topped this week’s CA/MB Add Board with Drew Baldridge’s “Tough People.” The song tallied 85 adds and is Baldridge’s first time to lead the board.

Bad Realm/Atlantic’s Breland goes Off The Record about new album Project 2024: “Grandmaman’em” was an idea that popped into my head right as I was about to fall asleep one night at like one in the morning. I woke up the next day and listened back to my little voice memo from before I had fallen asleep and was like, wait, this is actually pretty decent. So I brought it to my collaborator and hometown friend, Zach Manno, and we fleshed out the idea and ultimately got it co-produced and finished up by my producers, Sam Sumser and Sean Small. It’s just a song celebrating my ancestors and everything they had to go through for me to be in the position I’m in now.
“Icing” is one of those titles and concepts that sat in my phone for a while before I finally wrote it. I had a group of co-writers I knew would understand the assignment, and they did. I wanted to make a song that could talk about all of the different boxes that this woman checks. And the fact that she has a little cake is the icing. It’s a real barn burner, and I’ve been having a lot of fun playing it out on the road.
“What You’ve Been Through” is the only song on the project that I actually wrote by myself. As far as the songwriting side, I wrote it on a plane coming back from my last gig of 2023. It was just a concept that came to me. I wrote it to a version of the track that was a lot different than the one you hear now. Sean Momberger, who produced “Lovin On Me” by Jack Harlow and “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar (both of which went No. 1 in the hip hop world), produced the original version of this track. We added some country elements and kind of restructured it so it could fit in my world.
“Motion” is the first song I have written and recorded anywhere other than America (London) that has actually come out on one of my projects. Shout out to the international community for inspiring this one. I’ve always loved Afrobeats music and I’ve always been curious about what Afrobeats and country might be able to sound like together. And, to my knowledge, no one has really ever made a song like that. So “Motion” was one of my first attempts at trying to figure that out, and I think we did a pretty good job. It’s just a song about the end of a relationship. Lyrically, it’s kind of sad, but the actual vibe of the track, it still bops. So, if you don’t wanna listen to the lyrics, you can still enjoy it.
“Run” is a really special song because I wrote it with one of my favorite people on the planet, Stanley Cunningham. I’ve been working with Stanley since he was 15 and he’s 24 now. Just for context, we’ve written hundreds and hundreds of songs together over the years, across a million different genres, and this is the first song we’ve ever done that I was able to put out. And it’s his first country cut. Really excited to have him a part of this project, and it’s a really clever song. We tried to see how many different ways we could flip the word “run” or include different phrases that flip the word. I think we have 13 or 14 of them in the song, so as you listen through, you’ll see what we’re going for.
“Same Work (f/ The War And Treaty)” was inspired by a true story about a veteran I met who encouraged me and changed my perspective on what it is that I do and why it matters. A really beautiful conversation that turned into a song I wrote with Tenille Townes, who is one of my favorite artists in town. She really helped bring that concept to life. It was really great to be able to get The War And Treaty on this song, because Michael [Trotter Jr.] is a veteran and can relate to this song kind of from both perspectives. It’s a really beautiful one, and one I knew needed to close the project out.

Then Mark loses it because he’s like, ‘Really? We’re going to do that?’ Well, in 2022 they set the goal of getting 250 Partners In Hope. And they got it. Do that math.” [Ed. Note: If the basic $20 monthly level is assumed for all 250, that’s $60,000 to the tote board ... in one hour.]
Get Air Liner: Longtime St. Jude supporter – including a two-year stint on staff – KKBQ/Houston OM Travis Moon immediately grasped the concept when Benefield explained it. “I’ve heard and tried a lot of ideas, but I’ve never heard that one,” he says. Moon reached out to ALSAC/St. Jude staff while still in Memphis to get artists to cut liners around the concept. “I’m sending them a few copy ideas to see if we can get, for instance, ‘Hey, it’s Keith Urban. Thanks for what you’re doing for St. Jude ... and I’ve got a goal for you this hour of getting X Partners In Hope. Good luck!’”
Moon says having local celebrities on the air is like an endorsement from an influencer outside of the radio station. “It kind of makes it look like there are more people on your team, which is what you want,” he says. “This approach shows a complete embrace from the community. With this idea and setting goals in that way, it takes it to another level.”
St. Jude Dir./Partner Support, Music & Audio Team Scott Hinshelwood says, “We love it when our partners invite the local celebs, especially TV because they usually bring a camera crew to film the event or go live. Obviously lots of local social influencers are popular today as well. After speaking to Travis, we are looking to have some artists cut liners to kick off hourly goals.”
Book ‘Em: On the operational level, the pitch to the “local celebrity” usually starts with a personal relationship. “We’re like, ‘Hey, you’ve heard about our St. Jude radiothon, right?’” Benefield explains. “We’re lucky enough that we live within a decent driving distance of Memphis – about five hours. So for years, every January and February, we would load people up and take them to Memphis. We would give them that hands-on St. Jude experience.”
Benefield and others on staff also reassure the local celebrities that they’ll get all the education and support they need to do well. “This is where we go
off-script from St. Jude’s playbook,” he says. “We pre-promote the hell out of our radiothon, because it’s become such a huge community event. People literally look forward to it. So we tell them to promote the crap out of the time they’re going to be with us through their social networks. We provide them with the toll free number and the text-to-give number. When they come in, it’s literally like activating a phone tree.”
One more story illustrates the unexpected connections the idea has brought to bear. “We have a guy from Owensboro, Jason Koger, whose name may not ring a bell, but in the world of prosthetic limbs, he’s a celebrity,” Benefield says. “He was involved in a tragic accident and lost both his arms at the elbow. He literally has bionic hands now and is a great motivational speaker. Randomly, there was a storyline on Hawaii Five-0 where they needed somebody with prosthetic hands and he was cast.
“During one of our radiothons, Jason was the local guest for an hour and, while he was going through his phone tree, we got a call from Peter Weller, the guy who played Robocop. They’d met on the Hawaii Five-0 set and Jason had sent him a message ... so Peter called in to the studio and became a Partner in Hope. That’s an extreme example, but that’s how this idea works. We use the power of our friends and their connections to throw a really wide net.”
And that net has helped WBKR go from raising $45,000 annually to topping $334,000. Benefield notes, “The people we bring in may only have a marginal working knowledge of St. Jude, but by the time they walk out of the studio after only an hour, the magic of the hospital has literally unfolded before their eyes and in their ears. It’s just awesome.” –Chuck Aly CAC

Jamey Johnson Midnight Gasoline (Warner Music Nashville) Johnson’s first solo album in 14 years is the first of his Cash Cabin Series, a collection of albums recorded at the studio of the same name in Hendersonville, TN that was owned by Johnny and June Carter Cash. “I think the only common thread would be me,” he says. “There isn’t an overtone or some underlying theme in the songs. They are just glimpses of my life.”
Gabby Barrett Carols & Candlelight (Warner/WAR)
The 11-track Christmas project features collabs with husband Cade Foehner (“Baby, It’s Cold Outside”), The Piano Guys (“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”) and For King & Country (“Go Tell It On The Mountain”).
Flatland Cavalry Flatland Forever (Interscope)
In addition to tracks from each of the band’s albums, the 10th anniversary project includes four new songs, alternate versions of previously released tracks and commentary from the band about each stage of their career.
