At 24 weeks pregnant, KWJJ/Portland morning host Kristen Flowers went into labor and was told, for the health and safety of her and her baby, she would need to stay in the hospital until she delivered. When she and husband/co-host Nick Steele returned home with daughter Lily, they received a bill for $279,000. Realizing their situation was not uncommon, and inspired by John Oliver, the married morning show’s annual Medical Debt Payoff radiothon has since raised enough money to eradicate $16 million in medical debt over the past four years.
KF: When we got home from the hospital and saw the bill, we called our insurance company – we both had insurance at the time – and they said, “Oh, don’t worry, you don’t have to pay that.” It went down to $90,000, then $70,000. And we were both like, “We still can’t pay that. That’s still insane.” Yes, it’s not $279,000, but we still can’t do that. And ultimately, we got it negotiated down, but we had to put our kid on a payment plan. We paid monthly to the hospital until about her fifth birthday.
A lot of the people we hear from have insurance. These are not people looking for handouts. These are people who just thought they could call an ambulance and didn’t realize it was going to be $1,500.
NS: A lot of the times, it’s $500, $800, but it’s garnishing their paychecks. It’s affecting their lives.
KF: One of the big ones we hear is taking an ambulance where people are like, “I thought I was having a heart attack and didn’t want to get in the car so I called an ambulance. The ambulance bill turned out to be $500$600, and it’s been hanging over my head.” And they can’t get a great apartment because they now have medical debt on their record.
NS: A woman named Jessica owed $900 for [dilation and curettage] she had to have after finding out she’d miscarried twins. It wasn’t just a medical bill, it was a painful reminder of loss and grief. So we helped erase the debt and the bad memory that came with it.
We discovered the charity Undue Medical Debt (UMD), which buys all (continued on page 7)

Small Market Domination: KDBR
While the Dutton family rules Montana in TV’s Yellowstone, in real-life Kalispell, MT it’s Bee Broadcasting KDBR “106.3 The Bear” that dominates with double digit shares. In its 32nd year on the air, the locally owned station has been No. 1 in 65 of 67 surveys since Eastlan began measuring the market of 100,000 in 2012.
“We’re in the right place for country music,” says PD/morning host Mark “Kidd Grizz” Carpenter. “We’ve got Glacier National Park just to the northeast and we’re in a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains. People have been here a long time and put down roots; it’s a very tight knit community. We have agriculture, livestock and timber industries but a lot of tech companies are moving in. They say it’s the last best place.”

Eastlan Ratings (P12+ share)
The late “John Michaels” Fleming was KDBR’s first PD and morning host. “He ran it for more than 30 years, he’s the main reason The Bear is as big as it is,” explains Carpenter. “John put his heart and soul into the station and built it from nothing. He put together a station that is top-notch, and one I think would do well anywhere, not just in market 261. He had a lot of respect in the community and that was one of the things he built the station on. He passed away about a year-and-a-half ago, and that’s when I took over, using his blueprint.”
The music position is aimed at being fresh and current. “We try to structure ourselves where we’re playing the hits and former hits within a five-year period,” Carpenter says. “We try to keep the music and imaging comfortable. I hear stations in bigger markets that seem a little removed from the listeners. We’re in a big area, but it’s small as far as population goes, so we can keep our finger on the pulse of the listeners and gauge their reaction to things.”

KDBR’s stationality starts with its name. “We use a bear growl in a lot of our imaging,” Carpenter explains. “It really says, ‘Hey, we’re here,’ and that’s important for any station. Our airstaff is well-rounded; people who have really gotten to know the community. I was on seven-to-midnight for about 10 years. When John passed they asked me to fill in and it led me to having the morning shift full time. In afternoons we have Greg Tanner, who is remote from Florida. Our midday guy, Ross Strauser, has been in the
business 40 years and has an ear for how to present the music.
“There was a time when listeners were maybe tired of DJs, but they’ve come back from what we’ve seen,” adds Carpenter. “They want that friendly, familiar voice; they want that local guy or gal to tell you about the weather or the road conditions, and that’s what we do. When I say, ‘on such-and-such street,’ everybody knows what I’m talking about and that’s important, especially in a market this size.”
Carpenter points out KDBR’s outreach off the air as well, “We’re involved in a lot of youth and wildlife programs promoting the outdoors, and we do a toy drive called Campout For Kids where we broadcast live while camping in trailers for over 50 hours.
“Kalispell is a beautiful place,” concludes Carpenter. “It’s a great place to visit, but to live here it takes a special person - our winters are very cold and last a long time. The people here have a common thread and that is to survive and be happy. Through The Bear we try to provide a happy place to go, someplace that isn’t going to bring you down, but give you information and a laugh.”

Alive & Local: KWJJ’s Debt Relief
(continued from page 1)
of the debt. We then basically crowdfund to forgive what they bought it at. A lot of times, credit relief agencies buy debt for pennies, then charge the individual full price and make the difference as profit. UMD buys debt and forgives it at cost if you raise enough funds. A lot of times, we’re able to wipe out debt for the whole west coast.
KF: It isn’t easy, logistically, because this is very much a thing Nick and I do by ourselves. When people are interested in doing something similar, sometimes they hear what goes into it and how much work it is, then go a different route. But once you get a handle on it and start soliciting your audience for stories, you’d be surprised how many people will share what they’re going through.
We’re now at a point where people reach out to us, say thank you and tell their stories on air after they get that letter from us saying we paid off their medical debt. It’s starting to really pick up steam.
NS: We hope to expand this coming year into something more like a concert. Right now, it’s a week-long radiothon where we tell stories and emphasize to listeners that their $1 pays off $100 in medical debt.
KF: We’re able to look at all of our hot zips – areas we know we have listeners – knowing we made a difference in at least one of our listeners’ lives,
because we paid off $1 million in that area. So that’s a huge win for us.
NS: In the campaign this year, we eliminated $4,659,913.25 of medical debt for 3,345 individuals in the Pacific Northwest. That brings the total to more than $16 million we have paid off in the last four years.
KF: The ultimate goal for Undue Medical Debt is to start buying local hospitals’ debt. That’s something we’re really excited about working with them on.
NS: And do it before bills go to collections.
KF: In the grand scheme of things, we’d love to pick the five biggest hospitals for our audience and be able to pay off every debt that’s in that hospital before they are having their wages garnished, before the collectors start calling.
I’m always available if people want to ask questions about it, because at the end of the day, it benefits us all as a country. Medical debt is a terrible thing, and it’s a reason a lot of people don’t go to the doctor. That affects quality of life and life expectancy. If we can fix that, if we can take away some of that responsibility and burden, my gosh, why wouldn’t we?
