On Fire:Wallen, Big Loud, Smith Top ‘24

The three-peat is on as Morgan Wallen is Country radio’s top airplay performer for 2024, as he was the prior two years. His six top 10s and eight charting singles during the airplay window (Nov. 12, 2023 to Nov. 9, 2024) is as dominant a performance as any artist over the last 30 years. Unsurprisingly, Wallen’s performance was central in driving Big Loud to its second-straight Label of the Year crown. (See lists of top songs, performers and labels on page 4)

The No. 2 overall airplay performer this year was Jelly Roll, up from No. 7 in 2023. He’s followed by Nate Smith, Lainey Wilson and Luke Combs. Wilson was the year’s top female artist, followed by Megan Moroney; Dan + Shay and Parmalee take the top two slots the Duo/ Group category, respectively. Shocking no one, Post Malone was the top New Artist, followed by Warren Zeiders, Shaboozey, Drew Baldridge and Chayce Beckham

Speaking of Smith, he claimed the most-heard song of 2024 with “World On Fire.” Zeiders’ “Pretty Little Poison” ranked No. 2; with Jelly Roll w/Lainey Wilson’s “Save Me,” Sam Hunt’s “Outskirts” and Bailey Zimmerman’s “Where It Ends” rounding out the top five. As always, airplay is measured by Country Aircheck’s friends and partners at Mediabase. Full details including the Top 100 songs, Top Performers in all categories and more will be published in the December print edition of Country Aircheck, out next week.

(continued on page 7)

Fire Distinguisher: RCA’s Nate Smith (holding plaque) celebrates ” World On Fire ” landing atop the Top 100 songs of 2024 (full list in this month’s Country Aircheck print issue). Country Radio’s Giving Season

Anyone needing their faith in humanity restored can look no further than Country radio staff and listeners, who’ve been amassing millions over the past week during annual radiothons and other events, the vast majority benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The total collected so far exceeds $15 million.

Radiothons are demanding, require long hours and can be emotionally draining, but are a compelling reminder of the relevance and community inherent in Country radio and its listenership. Country Aircheck salutes all those involved for a job well done. See this year’s results in the table on page 9 and the photos on page 10.

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Riley Green , Ella Langley , Jimmy Harnen , Ryan Dokke and the Nashville Harbor team on taking “You Look Like You Love Me” to No. 1. This is the fourth chart topper for Green and the first for Langley, who becomes the first female atop the chart since Lainey Wilson led the chart dated May 6. Langley is also the first female to take a debut release to the top since Megan Moroney in June 2023.

Riley Green and Ella Langley

Kudos to Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Sony Music Nashville crew on racking up 27 adds for “Believe” by Brooks & Dunn with Jelly Roll. The original version by Brooks & Dunn also topped the Add Board upon its release on October 21, 2005, before its eventual rise to No. 6 the following April.

On Fire:Wallen, Big Loud, Smith Top ‘24

Fit To Print: Inside the year-end issue, the year’s top stories reveal the country community at its best, a by-the-numbers look at the year and a timeline of 2024’s biggest news. CMA Broadcast Winners also share their stories from the big night, including the Bobby Bones Show’s Amy Brown, whose date was her teenage son. “After he made his ice cream bowl and we went to our seats, he was sitting there in his suit, looking around and really dialed in,” she recalls. “As the lights went down and he could tell it was about to start, he looked up at me and said, ‘I’m living my best life right now.’ That was the sweetest moment.”

As he steps away, Sony Music Nashville Chairman/CEO Randy Goodman reflects on his almost 10 years at the label’s helm. “When we started it was triage – pulling people out of their foxholes and knocking down silos because there was a great deal of fear and uncertainty at the time,” he recalls. “I get it. But we had a lot of work to do.” And the penultimate outcome of that work? “Building the team,” he says. “A great company is one that continues with very minimal disruption when a leader leaves. With Taylor [Lindsey]’s announced ascendence to CEO I have no doubt that will happen.”

And in The Interview, songwriter Ashley Gorley discusses passing 80 No. 1 singles, the relationship between songwriters and radio, and the selfreflection that led to his efforts supporting mental health for creatives. “Through some conversations, I discovered that I can appear a little robotic in how I work, so I started sharing with and checking in on people,” he says. “I began learning that all writers have struggles trying to make something happen that may never happen. Failing the majority of the time – even if you’re at the top of the game – it’s tough. Even if you think you have it figured out, you don’t.”
