f, like me, you’ve been eagerly awaiting the second installment of Netflix’s richly researched and compelling series The Crown about our very own royal family, your wait is about to be over as it returns to our screens this month... and with a new cast of characters, including our cover girl Yolanda Kettle, who portrays Camilla Fry, one of Lord Snowdon’s multiple mistresses. We took Yolanda off to her own palace for the day, Cliveden House in Berkshire, former seat of the Astor family and now a wonderful country-house hotel, to dress her like a modern-day fairy princess. Like being on the set of The Crown with all those wonderful costumes, she ‘absolutely loved it’ (p86). And just as the royal family is a thoroughly British institution, so too is Richard Caring’s nightspot Annabel’s, originally named in 1963 by its founder Mark Birley after his wife Annabel Goldsmith. The Berkeley Square members-only club has had an alleged £55m spent on moving it two doors down to number 46 and turning it into a place where the ‘new Establishment’ – and now their dogs – can hang out all day and pretty much all night. Anastasia Bernhardt gets the skinny on everything from the design to the staff outfits on page 102. I’d hazard a guess that Suki Waterhouse and Poppy Jamie would be welcome on Annabel’s strict new membership policy (rumour has it some of the old guard may not get their memberships renewed!). The best friends have recently launched their own accessories line, as well as buying a new house (Suki) and visiting the Congo to see the endangered gorillas (both). They tell

Best Christmas present ever given? A few years ago I took a portrait of the whole family. As a surprise for Christmas I printed and framed it as a gift for everyone. And received? My parents gave my sister and me a lot of art supplies for Christmas one year when we were very young. It opened up my creative mind, which ultimately led me down the path to photography. I pulled my pants down in front of a beauty editor. I’d offered to be a guinea pig for a new cellulite treatment, but the lovely Kathleen Baird-Murray refused to believe I was afflicted. So I found myself in the Tatler loos, with my jeans round my ankles, pointing out dimples. It sealed the deal. And from then on I was front of the queue for any newfangled treatment. The doctor dragged his needles like cat’s claws across my derrière and down my thighs. And, of course, it was June, so I spent the rest of summer with sorry scabs, as well as cellulite. You’d have thought I’d learnt my lesson, but in the quest

Where do you go to escape the city? Out into the Oxfordshire countryside at weekends or back to Northumberland for a proper holiday. It’s where I grew up.

It’s utterly beautiful. My grandmother’s family, who were called Fenwick, lived there about 250 years ago and lost it (I think) through gambling debts. Last production you saw in the West End? With four children at home we get out far too rarely but I managed to see Travesties with Tom Hollander, directed by Patrick Marber, earlier in the year. It was fabulous. I remember watching it years ago with Antony Sher, when I found that the sense of it just ran away from me. This time it was much clearer to follow. Tom is never less than sublime but this was one of the best things I’ve seen him do. What would you do as mayor for the day? Get everyone to do an hour’s litter-picking between 11.30 and 12.30 and then give them a free pint for their trouble.

What entertainment would you bring to a desert island? A collection of PG Wodehouse short stories – Eggs, Beans and Crumpets or one of the Jeeves anthologies – because they’d cheer me up and remind me of England. I would listen to a bit of early Tom Waits from Closing Time.

What three items would you save from your burning house? A portrait of my wife painted by my friend Jonny; the children’s teddies (I’m grouping them together as one item, conveniently...), as their abject grief would break my heart; my laptop because it has got all our photographs on. And all my work...

What would really improve your life?

Where do you go when you don’t want anyone to get hold of you? I take the dogs for a long walk. Post Brexit Britain... Is desperately in need of firm, competent, kindly and enthusiastic leadership. What’s your favourite game to play? Racing Demon. Its pace is entirely dictated by the fastest player, so sometimes it can be brutal and other times merely

What’s the biggest beauty blunder you’ve ever made? I used to wear awful fake tan when I was younger. When I look back at photos I’m literally orange – it’s excruciating.

What three products couldn’t you live without? I love Crème de la Mer; Marc Jacobs mascara works wonders; and By Terry Cellularose CC Cream gives beautiful, barely-there, glowing coverage and smells like roses.

How do you fake a good night’s sleep? Laying a cold flannel over my skin helps. Also I’ve recently discovered Delilah Under Wear primer, which is like pressing restart on your face.

What treatments are you gearing yourself up to try? I’ve been hearing great things about the Abigail James’ facials at Liz Earle, so I might book one for the party season. Where do you go if you need a real indulgence? The Bulgari Spa. It’s so gorgeous there, you forget you’re in London. Alternatively, I’ll go stay with my mum and dad at their home in Worcestershire. There’s nothing as relaxing as country walks, reading and being cooked for. At home I like to just curl up and light a few Diptyque Baies candles. What’s in your makeup bag? Too many things. I love dramatic eye make-up, so I’ve got a Marc Jacobs Eye-Conic palette of shadows and Glossier’s much-coveted Boy Brow for defined eyebrows. I’m currently loving Burt’s Bees new lip crayons, they’re easy to use and feel super hydrating. What beauty tip have you learnt on set? Cleansing with a rich facial oil followed by a hot flannel. Dickens’ characters are psychologically detailed, vivid and strongly drawn. His perception of humanity is brilliant. David Edgar has done a great job with the script. It’s very much a new play but, in some ways, is faithful to the book. You don’t have to ‘make’ A Christmas Carol resonate – it just does. Dickens was writing about the world becoming increasingly insular and not reaching out, the themes don’t need updating.

ROAD TEST The interior of the new Volvo XC60 is cooler than a Swedish wine bar. Jeremy Taylor discovers his inner Sven…

It must be against the law in Sweden for anything not to be stylish. Downtown Stockholm is a smörgåsbord of design cool – Nordic naff simply doesn’t exist. Which makes it even more remarkable that not so long ago, no vehicle was considered as dull as a Volvo. Their huge estate cars were built for Soho antique dealers and beardy folk with labradors. The brand sold on being very safe in a collision with an elk – so how come the car-maker is now super cool? It started with the launch of the hugely popular XC90 in 2002 and continues with the latest XC60. The outgoing model was a Volvo bestseller, even if it looked utility and clattered over city potholes. This new XC60 really is something else. A size medium version of the extra large XC90, it has all the benefits without the bulk – minus a third row of seats. The svelte styling also makes it the best-looking, mid-size SUV in town. And that’s ahead of the ubiquitous Audi Q5, or the sportier Jaguar F-Pace. The interiors seal it. An iPad-sized infotainment screen soaks up all those ugly buttons and dials that can destroy dashboard aesthetics – the build quality across the rest of the cabin is exceptional. If you have an urban commute, opt for our T8 ‘Twin Engine’ hybrid test car, which can return massive mpg in the city. Otherwise, the twin-turbo T5 petrol or any of the diesels are considerably more frugal for longer drives. RATING: 4/5 handbags

COUNTRY

Nobody buys an SUV to go mud-plugging these days. Every XC60 is all-wheel drive but it’s designed to park on the pavement outside Waitrose, rather than tow a horsebox. Both petrol and diesel versions are competent performers on the motorway, or a twisty country back road. However, the petrol is noticeably smoother and quieter for longer hauls. The hybrid T8 I drove is as quick as a Porsche. It may be an SUV but I’m not sure many XC60 owners will welcome wellies and dogs near those plush leather seats. The matt wood and brushed aluminium is very Scandi but not hugely practical for everyday use. A huge, upright touchscreen makes following a satellite navigation route a joy. Operating the sound controls or the heating system is more frustrating – plenty of prodding required to locate the right menu for some functions. There are SUVs with more rear-seat legroom and boot space but the Volvo will swallow up kit for every lifestyle choice. All the seats are inviting, supportive and comfortable. Fun to drive? Not exactly – opt for the Jaguar F-Pace or Porsche Macan S if that’s your remit. That’s not to say the XC60 T8 isn’t fast, it’s just a better buy for urban use. That’s where the T8’s hybrid power comes into its own. Volvo has finally shaken off the ‘dull’ mantle then; a relief for antique dealers and labrador owners everywhere... RATING: 4/5 wellies

VICTORIA BROACKES Charlotte Metcalf meets the unsung hero responsible for bringing some of the biggest smash-hit exhibitions to the Victoria & Albert Museum in recent years Portrait by ALEXANDRA DAO

f you haven’t heard of Victoria Broackes you will certainly have heard of the exhibitions she has masterminded. It was Victoria who came up with the ideas for all those sell-out shows that revamped the Victoria & Albert Museum’s grand but somewhat staid image, from Kylie Minogue, David Bowie and Pink Floyd to You Say You Want a Revolution? Victoria admits that the Bowie exhibition in 2013 was ‘one of the most successful exhibitions ever recorded’ and as she’s unlikely to boast, this means it was – and continues to be – an out-and-out smash hit (now that it’s travelling, it’s received nearly two million visitors worldwide). Oh – and she’s done this all under the radar while bringing up four daughters. Move over Nicola Horlick, Superwoman is being redefined. Victoria began her career at the Royal College of Art in the ’80s and made a fairly seamless transition into the Boilerhouse at the V&A. ‘I started as part of a tiny team there,’ remembers Victoria. ‘Our mission was to put on groundbreaking exhibitions on unusual subjects, in interesting ways, immersing people in the experience.’ Victoria left for a stint at the Louvre in Paris before returning to London in 1998, by which time she had three children. She started working at the Covent Garden Theatre Museum. ‘I absolutely loved it,’ Victoria says. ‘It was a living, breathing museum and I was working with actors, directors and people who felt passionately about what we were doing, and believed in the power of great stories and stage techniques to bring subjects to life.’ When the Theatre Museum closed down, Victoria was already planning to bring the Kylie Minogue exhibition over from Melbourne to the V&A. Sir Mark Jones, the then director, whom Victoria describes as ‘quite subversive’, was supportive and justifiably – 270,000 flocked to the exhibition, of which more than a third had never been through the V&A’s doors before. Music is Victoria’s passion. She played piano, guitar and cello at school and still sings madrigals. Her daughters were Salisbury Cathedral choristers. At 14, her great-grandfather was reputedly the youngest violinist in the Leeds orchestra. Her older brother, Justin, is ‘a brilliant pianist’ and her half-brother, producer and songwriter, Simon Climie, was part of the pop duo, Climie Fisher. So it wasn’t long before Victoria was rootling around in the V&A archives and discovering it had been collecting pop music, and all its art

I love state of the art modern interiors, but I’ll say manor house because I’m a terrible accumulator of stuff, and I think it’s ok to be untidy in a manor house, but not so good in a penthouse.

and design related paraphernalia, since the 1970s. ‘Out of 100 people in the street, ten might be into art and design but 99 will be into music,’ says Victoria. ‘It’s the one art form that unites us all. What I see us doing here, different to other music museums around the world, is putting music into its cultural context and building on the knowledge and interest people already have.’ Before Bowie, Victoria admits to ‘a string of failures’. ‘I developed exhibitions about Madonna, Elvis and The Stones but for complicated business reasons they all failed,’ says Victoria. ‘Then I was introduced to Bowie’s manager, Bill “Z”. Bowie was top of a short shortlist but the museum didn’t have much in the collections, partly because Bowie had kept almost everything and amassed a huge private collection of his own. I still remember exactly where I was when Bill showed me the archive on a computer – I nearly fell off my chair. There were about 75,000 objects going back to his teenage years. We’d had a slot reserved for Elvis that had just fallen through so we went for it.’ After Bowie came the exhibition on the Sixties, You Say You Want a Revolution? Visitors particularly loved the soundtrack – chosen by Victoria, of course. Her hallmark has been using headphones so that as you walk towards an exhibit, your headphones know where you are and the soundtrack changes automatically. ‘We only had 500 sets for the Bowie exhibition because Sennheiser was about to stop making them,’ remembers Victoria. ‘We took the lot on and now we’ve now been working with Sennheiser and their incredible system for five years and by the time Pink Floyd opened, everyone knew what to expect.’ When the V&A won the Museum of the Year Award in 2016, the director, the late Martin Roth, won universal acclaim for his leadership. Now the new director, Tristram Hunt, is enjoying the spotlight. When I suggest that she’s really the one responsible for its success, with three major exhibitions in four years, Victoria says, ‘I’ve been incredibly lucky to have had these opportunities,’ and she’s less concerned with winning plaudits than focusing on her mission to continue using music as a way of inspiring exhibition goers to think about their own lives. ‘Exhibitions aren’t an abstract way of telling people things. People should feel things,’ she says. If ticket sales are anything to go by, Victoria is an unrecognised heroine of the British art scene. Isn’t it time we publicly hailed her?

or a girl who describes herself as ‘highly strung, anxious and... funny,’ Yolanda Kettle seems to have a wise (and beautiful) head on her 29-yearold shoulders already. The actor – who turns up at the Sanderson Hotel today dressed in black trousers and top, thick blonde hair tied back, peerless complexion (thanks to good genes and Dermalogica) and glasses – certainly wears her heart on her sleeve though, surprisingly for a millennial, not on her Instagram account (it’s private). Whether it’s screwing up her face when she says she comes from Birmingham (‘I hate Birmingham, I find it uninspiring’) to talking about her eating disorders as a young girl which are well and truly behind her and feel a ‘world away’, or her father’s job (an office job – ‘something to do with computing and insurance... he always gets cross with me that I don’t really

know’), her natural warmth, confidence and rich Thespian voice (with not a hint of Brummie) belie what she thinks of herself. Certainly she has no overt reason to feel anxious (apart from the existential angst most of us are feeling about the state of the world at the moment) – but that didn’t stop her from crying yesterday just because ‘she was feeling a bit lonely and insecure’. Yolanda had a happy upbringing, she says, although she hardly saw her Spanish mother, who worked ‘many different jobs’. ‘I loved school so much, I loved learning. I completely devoured plays, Shakespeare and poetry. As my mum wasn’t around much we [her sister and brother] spent a lot of time with my grandmother and aunt, who was really into poetry. We used to put on plays – we put on Macbeth and Fawlty Towers! I must have been so annoying.’ Yolanda’s career took off from the moment it started straight from school and has been on an upward trajectory ever since. Currently, she’s filming Marcella with Anna Friel (out next spring), as well as starring on the small screen in the BBC’s four-part adaptation of EM Forster’s Howards End. In December we’ll all be settling down to binge-watch her performance in the second series of Netflix’s blockbusting epic, The Crown. Stage, however, is her real passion as it’s what first drew her to acting in the first place. ‘I feel that theatre is very special,’ she says. ‘You completely feel the audiences and it’s really interesting how they change from night to night. Sometimes you just need to give them permission to laugh or whatever and the whole room changes.’ Her first major role was as Nina in Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Arcola Theatre in the East End with Geraldine James in 2011; last year she played opposite Anne-Marie Duff in Oil at the Almeida (her favourite role to date, because of the complexity of playing a seven-year-old through to an 80-year-old). Challenging yes, but nothing that she doesn’t want. Her dream role? Hedda Gabler, of course. Yolanda lives in Hackney with her boyfriend, manager of the Trullo restaurant in Islington, Patrick Campbell, who sounds rather too good to be true. ‘He is!’ she exclaims excitedly. ‘He’s so sartorial, he dresses better than me... cooks better than me, he’s really tidy, he’s intelligent, I’m really lucky.’ Too right. Yolanda even credits Patrick – who favours a bit of Paul Smith and Oliver Sweeney – with her own newish pared-back style. ‘I used to be quite flamboyant,’ she says, ‘I loved a mix of vintage, a blue suede shoe here, a leopard print there. But I’m really trying to create a “wardrobe” now.’

One only hopes her boyfriend allows her to keep that leopard print for a rainy day. With all the furore over Harvey Weinstein and the terrible allegations that are coming out of the woodwork every day, has Yolanda ever come up against sexism of any sort during her career? ‘No, thankfully not. I’m in shock about the whole thing. I’m disgusted. I’ve been so lucky.’ And that seems to be the truth of the matter. Even being on set of The Crown in which she plays Camilla Fry, the wife of Jeremy Fry, descendant of the Fry’s chocolate company founder, with whom Princess Margaret’s husband Lord Snowdon has an affair, was nothing but a joy. ‘Everything was unbelievable: the attention to detail and the scale, the locations, the costumes, the hair, the makeup, the cast, the writing... everyone seemed to be at the top of their game and everyone was so nice.’ And why does she not promote herself on Instagram? ‘I feel really strongly about that as when I was younger I was really susceptible to image and had eating problems. I admire those for whom it works financially and successfully, and one day I’d love to be able to use it as a platform for good. I think women like Lena Dunham and Emma Watson are doing amazing things. I’m guilty of being a feminist without actively doing enough at the moment. I hope that will change.’ What she’s not guilty of is being a busy working actor with a brilliantly bright future ahead of her. ■ This autumn Yolanda stars in Howards End on BBC One, and in Netflix drama The Crown

wherever I can. A nice pillow, staying close to a coffee shop as I love waking up and walking to get coffee. Suki: Framed photographs, dog walks, hot baths with Epsom salts and essential oils, and I recently bought a small massage machine – but I feel the novelty may wear off pretty soon. What’s been your most outrageous fashion choice and who are your go-to designers? Poppy: I am totally in love with Erdem; I just think his collections are always so beautifully detailed, feminine and elegant. Burberry is always a favourite. More recently, Shrimps is my go-to – their coats and new ready-to-wear collection are amazing. My most outrageous fashion choice? A PVC bodysuit, it was sweaty. Suki: Alexandre Vauthier, Reem Acra, Burberry and Valentino have been fabulous to wear recently. Outrageous? Perhaps the black dress I wore to the Harper’s party recently ticks that box. Apart from launching your bag business, what have you both been up to recently? Poppy: Suki and my latest adventure was to the Congo rainforest where we trekked with gorillas... Suki: I’ve just bought a house in Notting Hill. It’s empty at the moment so we’ve been sitting on boxes and possibly on furniture that doesn’t go with anything, drinking matcha lattes and chatting about where to buy tables and chairs. What have been the trickier aspects of going into business together? Who’s the boss? Poppy: We don’t really have a ‘boss’ and we usually agree on quite a lot. I think we are a good personality match because Suki is way better at some stuff and then it switches, so we just play to each other’s strengths. I think it’s useful to be in business with someone who has different skills because you always need each other. Suki: We both end up leaning on each other depending on how our lives are. That’s why it’s fabulous to have a partner. If you’re having a stressful week or month the other one can steer the ship and cover for you. What are your home comforts? Poppy: Apple crumble... Combined you have around 1.3m followers on Instagram. Do you like engaging in this way? Poppy: I think Instagram is an amazing way to communicate with people, we launched Pop & Suki using the platform, and at first, our account was just a moodboard of pastel pink imagery but it has quickly developed into an amazing, supportive, friendly, pinkloving community.

What do you think about its influence on the younger generation? Burberry S/S’18 Poppy: I recently gave a TED Talk on this subject titled Addicted to Likes. Studies have proven these platforms are highly addictive, can make us slaves to external validation and can cause us to compare our lives at every moment (which has terrible effects on self-esteem). But on the other hand, in moderation, these platforms can be amazing for inspiring, educating and connecting people who may not have found each other before. Suki: I think young people, and actually everyone, need guidance on how to understand the way to consume content and how it’s manipulated across all platforms. There’s a fantastic documentary on YouTube called Miss Representation that I really recommend young girls to watch. I recently set up a screening for the girls’ charity Step

Up. It’s difficult because we are all a product of our culture and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying it, although I think it’s important to have a deeper understanding of media. What advice might you have for someone who’s struggling to fit in because they don’t quite conform to type? Poppy: I never felt like I fitted in and it was tough because I wanted to feel like I belonged or had ‘a group’. I then began to realise, I never want to be a ‘type’. The day I fit in is the day I am boring. I started to meet other misfits who also didn’t fit in, like Suki, and they are the best sort of people. Suki: You’re onto something! I spent a lot of my life thinking something was wrong with me on a deep level and I still struggle with that. You have to tell yourself to shut up sometimes and stop getting in your own way. Life in Trump’s America is... Poppy: Quite scary. Suki: Horrifying, but we’ll get through it stronger than ever. Life in Brexit Britain is... Poppy: Umm, uncertain, we’ll see, let’s think positive. Suki: Hopefully not as terrible as we think. Time will tell. What is guaranteed to make you laugh? Poppy: Suki, she has me cackling the entire time. Suki: My sister Imogen doing comic sketches in the kitchen at my parents’ house. What are the big issues that might keep you up at night? Poppy: How we are going to live with robots, terrorism, climate change, youth unemployment, human slavery, child and elderly abuse, animal poaching (Space for Giants is an amazing charity protecting elephants, so knowing there’s support helps me sleep better). people who aren’t given the opportunities to hone their skills because of societal structures. What’s your idea of a good night out? Poppy: A delicious dinner with great friends and dancing with trainers on. Suki: A good night in. Making up a recipe with someone you love and having people over. The other night I made an almond gazpacho and a kale cayenne pepper apple sesame seeds salad. People do game nights in LA – werewolves and villagers. It can be really fun if you have some good actors in the room. When do you feel most yourself? Poppy: When I am with my family or good friends who remind me of me. Suki: Any time I turn off and lose myself in my thoughts and rediscover who ‘I’ am at that moment. What would shock us about you? Poppy: I once got stabbed in the head when I was 18. Suki: I’m horribly messy. It’s really terrible, I don’t know if anyone should ever have to live with me.

What’s on your Netflix to watch list? Suki: Lady Gaga’s Five Foot Two. Poppy: Agreed, the latest Lady Gaga Documentary – I heard people were bawling their eyes out at the screening. Will you be home for Christmas? Poppy: Yes! I can’t wait actually. My brothers and I all travel a lot, so it’s rare that the whole family can spend time together at home in Warwickshire. Suki: This is the first Christmas I’m planning for my family, and inviting family. I’ve rented a house in the countryside and I’m stacking up on board games and trying to persuade my little sister to let us have a turkey (she’s vegan).

How could we most impress you? Poppy: Start telling me about the brain or new research into how we can combat stress and anxiety or positive ways in which we can shape the future. I just finished reading Sapiens, which is about the evolution of humans. It was fascinating. Oh, and if you gave me a star chart/ tarot/palm reading, I love that stuff. Suki: Tell me an extraordinary story, teach me something. What books do you remember loving as a child? Poppy: The Enid Blyton books, Winnie the Pooh, The Naughtiest Girl at School series and Harry Potter, obviously. Suki: Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.

Any tips to help us survive the Christmas holidays? Poppy: Sleep when you can. Inevitably there are going to be annoyances, being tired does not make it easier. Suki: Patience. Spending time with family in contained spaces is quite taxing sometimes. What are you hoping for under the Christmas tree? Poppy: Our new Pop & Suki carryall – I am SO excited for this bigger bag, perfect for my laptop, long flights, books... Suki: A few nice big mugs would be fabulous. If you could have one wish... what would it be? Poppy: To continue to meet amazing, life changing, interesting people and travel the world having adventures, laughing until my stomach hurts. Annabel’s will be back with a bang on Berkeley Square at the end of this year under the direction of Richard Caring, who acquired the Birley Group ten years ago and whose hospitality projects, including The Ivy, Sexy Fish and Cecconi’s, have a habit of turning to gold. Despite Caring’s involvement, the DNA of Birley’s original creation will be very much in evidence at the new site, an expansive 26,000 sq/ft Grade

lthough there is scarcely a historic street without one, you have probably never noticed them. Hiding right beneath your feet, London’s coal holes once stored the fuel that fanned the city’s smothering smog – though most have long since been converted to squeeze extra space into townhouses. Despite its grubby beginnings, there’s one coal hole unmatched in its fame, where you were just as likely to find Princess Michael of Kent watching sequined girls strut down the catwalk, as you were to catch Frank Sinatra holding court in the corner; Kate Moss locking lips with Jemima Khan on the dance floor or Joan Collins appearing in a dramatic flurry of fur. The coal hole in question is of course Annabel’s on Berkeley Square. The only nightclub the Queen has ever dusted off her glad

I-listed Georgian townhouse two doors down from the original nightclub. But where Annabel’s once thrummed only after dark, now it is offering a near 24/7 service (7am to 4am) with breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and dancing (and eventually a wellness centre), spread across Princess four floors under the same Eugenie (2016) manicured roof. With an eye to Nina Campbell’s original design, London-based designer Martin Brudnizki has been charged with its aesthetic revival. ‘In four words it’s eccentric, English, maximalist and surrealist,’ says Brudnizki. ‘Imagine the old Annabel’s and times it by 500, it’s going to be like falling down the rabbit hole.’ This playful sense of make believe permeates the whole project, something that Guillaume Glipa, The Birley Group’s executive director, references. ‘Annabel’s is a stage, and for Mr Birley it was definitely a stage that he created Anna Wintour 50 years ago. We are telling (2010) a story and you need to have a script scenario. There is no such thing as a good movie with a crap scenario, even if you pay for the very best actors.’ All the world might have been a stage for Shakespeare, but the Bard’s set certainly didn’t include a bespoke chandelier installation festooned with unicorns, monkeys and swooping through several floors. Each level will have its own distinctive theme but all draw on the idea of the

garden. ‘It’s all about flora and fauna,’ says Brudnizki, for whom everything in the building leads down to ‘the eventual fall from grace that always happens at the end of the night’ – i.e. the nightclub, or as Brudnizki likes to think of it, the garden of Eden. Trudie Styler and Sting at Lady Gaga’s Intimate The space will also include a courtyard garden Belvedere gig (2013) with a terrace that, rarely for central London, has a late night licence, so there will thankfully be no more huddling on the kerb for a fag in the early hours. Bearing in mind England’s weather, it includes a retractable glass roof, which Glipa likes to call ‘the new centre court of Berkeley Square’, as it takes just a few minutes to glide into place. Despite the building’s glitzy finery, it has always been the members of Annabel’s who have made it what it is, lending the nightclub a smattering of their stardust. This time socialite Astrid Harbord will be holding the keys to entry. ‘The great thing about Annabel’s,’ she says, ‘is that you can walk in and find someone of all ages. I used to go with my father and sister, my granny and her boyfriend, so it’s about all the generations having an equally good time together. You always feel excited about going there because it has such a naughty atmosphere.’ It’s partly for that reason that the club has offered its surviving 72 founding members an annual membership of £5.25 a year, honouring the fee from 1963, but Harbord insists that, although it will retain its legacy, Annabel’s will adapt to represent London society today, encompassing the new tech generation, business women and Madonna at a Stella McCartney launch the city’s increasingly international slant. Despite its 21st-century evolution, there are some ways in which Annabel’s will remain old school – telephones and laptops are barred from all but one floor and there will be a fine cigar room. That being said, the cigar room will offer a cocktail pairing that is far from traditional. Where you once might have enjoyed a cognac or whisky with the best Havana, their master sommelier has paired gin, tequila and rum-based cocktails. There will also be a tequila and mescal bar stocked with over 600 bottles (most of which are unavailable anywhere else in the UK), a cocktail fountain on the ground floor and a range of Annabel’s own blend spirits. When I make the mistake of referencing them as ‘house’ spirits, Luis Simoes, the Birley Group’s beverage director, swiftly reminds me that they Richard are nothing of the sort; they are ‘Annabel’s blends’. Caring and Goldie Simoes tracked down niche distilleries to work Hawn preview the new site with, including a bourbon producer who has been (2016) voted best bourbon distiller two years in a row. ‘I could easily have made a cognac that cost £20,000 a bottle but this was about giving something back to members of value. Our spirits will range somewhere from £30 to £70 a bottle and will allow our members to drink a better quality liquid than they could anywhere else for that sort of money.’ There will also be prebottled cocktails to take home, including a negroni that has been gently heated in a sous vide for three days. ‘It brings out 50 times more flavour,’ says Simoes, ‘it has the same effect as leaving it in the barrel for six months, making it less bitter and more well-rounded.’ Although they will make all their own liqueurs, bitters, syrups and cordials, and use techniques as far-fetched as aging drinks in traditional Spanish leather botas, Simoes insists that the customer should never be preached to. ‘As a member sat at the bar, this is not relevant to you. It’s all about the experience you’re going to have while you are drinking the liquid in the glass. This isn’t about ego, it’s about bringing the best product possible to the table.’ And this perhaps best sums up Annabel’s past and future success. Like a swan, the team madly paddle beneath the water, so high society can glide Lady Gaga (2011) graciously through the evening. ■

to include man’s favourite four-legged friend, offering a dog walking service, a change that Astrid didn’t anticipate would be so popular: ‘It has actually swayed a few people’s memberships.’ The dress code has been relaxed… slightly – Patrick Cox, Eric Clapton and Damian Aspinall have all fallen foul of the previous door policy – and trainers will class as appropriate footwear, although the reception staff will have to be fashion savvy enough to differentiate between Gucci sneakers and gym shoes. But fashion savvy this institution will be, especially with fashion editor Deborah Brett in charge of the uniforms. ‘Annabel’s is very British, so it was very important to us that the designers we worked with had a strong connection to London but we also wanted to promote new talent.’ It was French-Lebanese Racil Chalhoub who got the call up to work with Deborah on the uniforms. Her Notting Hill-based studio is a byword for cool among Tracey London’s It crowd. Carefully Emin (2010) balancing practicality and style, the uniforms will reflect the rich jewel colour palette of the interiors. ‘We have looked to the iconic women who partied at Annabel’s, like Jerry Hall in the 1970s, zipped up in a pant suit,’ says Brett. ‘Covering up is much more alluring and Racil sums up this modern kind of sexy perfectly, so we’ve played with the idea of tuxedos for the women.’

iovanni Raspini, an Italian designer famed for his silverware and jewellery, has opened a flagship store on South Molton Street, bringing his continental flare to London in time for Christmas. Handmade in the rich bucolic hills of Tuscany, close to Arezzo, his homeware and jewellery collections require no translation. They ooze Italian glamour and unrestrained decadence. Each piece takes inspiration from nature and its endless transformations, such as the animated forms and textures of wild creatures in the Animalier Collection. With half a century’s experience behind him, Giovanni Raspini settles for nothing short of perfection, his personal style reflecting that of his work. Collections are sketched, modelled, created and packaged exclusively in house – ‘handmade with care and infinite passion’ – typifying the Italian modus operandi. The team begins by sketching a design, then using an ancient wax casting technique, they model and shape creations using heat before completing the piece by buffing, burnishing silver, or embedding jewellery stones. Raspini’s ‘Milky Way’ collection illustrates his silver mastery, punctuated with elegant stone

inserts while the ‘Tree of Life’ collection emulates the symbolic interlacing of branches and leaves. Village is a collection created using hammered silver spheres, alternated for an elaborate, decadent finish. And if you’re pining after classic chain linked jewellery, Raspini’s Chelsea collection adds an eccentric spin, mounting each chain in different sizes. hile a story lies behind most pieces of fine jewellery, few examples carry tales of such personal struggle and bygone glamour as Gurmit Kaur Campbell’s. Born in a traditional Sikh Punjabi family in liberal Singapore, Gurmit fled an arranged marriage at the age of 19, with the help of Belgian artist Olivier Marie Strebelle. Having trained as a goldsmith in Brussels, Gurmit took her talents to Paris and New York, stumbling across Yves Saint Laurent and Azzedine Alaïa on her travels. She recalls the moment Yves Saint Laurent delighted in Gurmit’s Indian heritage, draping silks around her which inspired his fluid

floral colours collection. Gurmit’s modelling career saw her featured in Italian Vogue and French Glamour. It comes as little surprise then that Gurmit’s jewellery mimics the fluidity and effervescent colour of her past. Her fine jewellery blends the vivid Eastern aesthetic of her heritage with a modern western elegance. Semi-precious stones are combined largely with 18kt gold. The bright golds, reds, blues and greens of India enliven more restrained shapes and styles. As the trend for minimalism fades in the UK fine jewellery market, it is replaced by the bold maximalism of yesteryear, making Gurmit’s fine jewellery more desirable than ever. What ‘look’ are you most hoping will fall out of favour? Leather upholstery, I just don’t get it. It’s cold, sweaty and shiny. I particularly hope it falls out of favour in cars – when I was younger sumptuous cloth upholstery was viewed in great esteem. How would you describe your own home? It is furnished with an eclectic mix of heirlooms and inherited pieces, post-war vintage and contemporary.

What’s the most extravagant thing you’ve bought? I don’t seek to spend great amounts on things but if I fall in love with something I find it difficult to come home without it, such as my Rochard sculpture. I had admired it since childhood in a shop window where it had gathered dust for decades. Eventually I had the courage to ask the price and found it was just about affordable. I admire Private jet by Martin Kemp Design it every day.

Radovic, who have created so many extraordinary ‘Spomenik’ sculptures in Eastern Europe, have repeatedly drawn my admiration. Last piece of art you bought? While you can never forget Cambodia’s bloody history, its architectural, historical and natural glories make it a must-visit destination, says Caiti Grove

t’s a muggy afternoon on the banks of the Tonle Sap river in Phnom Penh and families sit with picnics on the grassy lawns around a lavish gold statue of the Buddha while crowds congregate on the riverbank as long narrow dragon boats glide past, each carrying at least 40 men in a single row. Suddenly, a holler of excitement travels through the crowd: a procession of black Mercedes bearing the royal crest have been spotted. King Norodom Sihamoni, Prime Minister Hun Sen and his First Lady Bun Rany step out onto a red carpet and into the Royal Pavilion, where golden thrones await, surrounded by flowers and silk, looking out onto the dragon boats in the choppy water. This is the annual three-day Water Festival, which takes place all over the country every November to celebrate the army and mark the end of the rainy season. It’s a chaotic, riotous scene: Phnom Penh’s stampede of mopeds, tuk-tuks and cars speed through the whole celebration; young women in short skirts rev their engines and vehicles full of tourists lurch perilously under the weight of stacked luggage. One of the city’s most compelling addresses is Raffles Hotel Le Royal. Built in 1929, the landmark preserves a grand colonial style of old wood and marble behind an enormous garden of traveller palm trees that sets it back from the road. Staff wear domed gold hats with gold embroidered white jackets and coloured trousers for each day of the week – a tradition in the Royal Palace so the king could keep track

of his schedule. Its Elephant Bar is known for hosting Jackie Kennedy in 1967 when she visited to see the glories of ancient Angkor Wat and drank her now signature cocktail, the Femme Fatale – champagne, cognac and crème de fraise des bois, topped with an orchid. Phnom Penh is a concoction of Parisian-esque mansions, gold palaces and post-independence, brutalist-style buildings. Khmer Architecture Tours carry their tourists as passengers in cyclos – a three-wheeled contraption with a seat at the front for a passenger and a cyclist at the back. The country’s past as a French protectorate is most evident in its mansions – yellowwashed and pillar-fronted with paint peeling from their white shutters, they hide behind monkeypod trees and tall palms. While Phnom Penh is intoxicating, after a few days of urban intensity you might want to slow down with a trip into the countryside. Here, a traditional way of life continues. The drive out of town gives a glimpse of real life; girls in pleated skirts and crisp white shirts cycle home from school beside older boys who perch two to a bike and overtake lines of cows being herded in single file down the road. All the while, vast paddy rice fields define the landscape. Some day trips have a darker, more challenging theme. It is difficult to come to Cambodia and forget the brutality of Pol Pot’s communist Khmer Rouge. Some 400 tourists a day visit ‘S-21’, an old school in the city where victims were ‘processed’ before being transported

Some day trips have a darker, more challenging theme. It is difficult to come to Cambodia and forget the brutality of Pol Pot’s communist Khmer Rouge

to the Killing Fields outside the capital. A short walk around a field takes visitors to different makeshift ‘stations’, where people were brutally murdered; bits of clothes and bone still emerge through the earth as rain washes the soil away. At the centre, a tower of 8,000 skulls stands as a monument to the dead. Some think such trips are necessary to understand this country and its people. Others might find it too disturbing or think this gruesome event is off limits for touristic intrigues. Certainly an awareness of this wounding period is necessary before your trip. Either way, the history and the resilience of the Cambodian people are ever present. From families picnicking at midnight around the night market to servers and tuk-tuk drivers who joke and tease in every exchange, Phnom Penh’s people seem resolute in their determination to not only survive, but to enjoy their relatively new freedom. Forty-minutes’ plane ride north of Phnom Penh, the country’s second city Siem Reap is the gateway to the Temples of Angkor and the hotel to stay at is Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. The temples were built as monuments to different Hindu gods from the 9th century, they have been Buddhist since the 12th century, when it became the largest civilisation in the world with a population of more than one million. Now a thick forest of 70-foot trees surrounds the temples but it was once an urban hive of wooden houses. At the centre, the largest temple Angkor Wat – built for Vishnu –

is monumental in its scale. The smaller sites are less well preserved but are essential for understanding the scale of this once bustling city. Its water management system demonstrates how sophisticated it was in its prime: it stretched over 460 square miles, a network of canals connected a series of reservoirs with the Tonle Sap lake, one of the most productive freshwater ecosystems in the world. Make time for Ta Prohm, commonly known to locals – quite bizarrely – as ‘Tomb Raider temple’ after being used in the film. This temple feels completely magical and dreamlike as 40ft silk cotton and strangler fig trees drape their thick roots over the 800-year-old limestone. Bayon is also surreal but for different reasons – 15ft stone busts of King Jayavarman VII seem to loom ominously from every corner. Ta Nei is apparently rarely visited, and is so quiet that it’s easy to feel like a modern-day Indiana Jones. Angkor Wat has an otherworldly, magical spirit. It’s a powerful place – and one that’s providing a force and touristic focus to reawaken what Cambodia lost 40 years ago. Cambodia’s ancient riches certainly deserve our patronage – as do the people who look to a better and more prosperous future. ■ BOOK IT: About Asia’s Ancient and Modern Capitals tour splits seven

Grand but graceful, impressively large but with an over-riding sense of intimacy, the Rosewood is an ideal treat retreat and perhaps more than any other London hotel feels reminiscent of the palace hotels of Paris. With its arches, spiral marble staircase, 166-foot high cupola, walnut fittings, fires and mirrors, this Belle Époque building is reassuringly historic while the snappy staff and bedrooms ooze contemporary sophistication. Don’t expect anything new-fangled or trendy – a night here is about the mainstays of hospitality – total comfort, beds like clouds, staff that go out of their way to make you happy, a spa which truly delivers (plus a great and speedy Matthew Curtis hair salon), and a GM – Michael Bonsor – who has real charisma and injects everything with a sense of glamorous fun. No wonder then that both the Holborn Dining Room (especially for breakfast when you can try rising star and healthy chef Mira Manek’s saffron blossom honey compote with cinnamon granola) and Scarfes Bar – with its crackling fire, killer cocktails and snacks, squashy sofas and jazz evenings – have become places to be. FOOD & TRAVEL THE CURTAIN, Shoreditch

The most rock ’n’ roll opening in east London since Shoreditch House, this hotel and members’ club from the Gansevoort Group (its first outside New York) has music, food and art at its core. Rooms combine an industrial Meatpacking District vibe – exposed brick walls, black framed factory windows – with local touches, such as the Dalston Cola and Ozone Coffee in the drinks cabinet mini-bar. In the wardrobe, you’ll find a Men’s Society ‘Overindulgence Survival Kit’ (sleep mask, restorative bath oil) and a 1980s college locker-style photography collage by renowned British music industry snapper Mick Rock. Artwork is everywhere, from a Banksy in the members-only Imperial Room to an installation of wall-mounted stag heads wearing blindfolds by the entrance to the all-day taqueria, Tienda Roosteria. Other social spaces include the rooftop lido, a brasserie restaurant with a pool, a spa and LP, a live performance venue for members which doubles up as a workout zone for guests’ Boom Cycle classes. There’s also Red Rooster, an outpost of chef Marcus Samuelsson’s hugely successful Southern soul food restaurant (the original is in Harlem). NOBU HOTEL SHOREDITCH

With a Nobu restaurant at its heart and sophisticated minimalist design throughout, this hotel looks and feels as zen as you would expect – from the rattan shoji screens in the lobby bar to the black and gold corridors. Rooms, all angular lines and wooden floors, come with gold leather woven headboards behind the bed, ‘bento box’ gold cabinets to hide the television and minibar, and hand-painted abstract murals by Hackneybased artist Sichi on blackout night screens at the floor-to-ceiling windows. The bathrooms are all white except for custom-designed, gold-plated washbasins and showers. Kimonos replace dressing gowns and there is green tea and rice crackers to snack on, should you feel peckish. The main draw is the sub-level restaurant which has a ten-seater sushi bar facing the open kitchen at the front and a bar at the back with tan leather stools, high marble tables and Japanese whisky bottles lining the wall. The menu is a mix of the classics (Wagyu steak, black cod) and ‘Shoreditch Specials’, such as umami Chilean sea bass and king crab leg with creamy wasabi. DJs play house music at weekends, and there’s a tiered outdoor garden terrace with a bonsai tree and a bamboo fence. THE NED, The City

What was once the Midland Bank HQ is now a grand hotel and members’ club from Soho House and the US Sydell Group. Named after architect Sir Edwin ‘Ned’ Lutyens who designed the building, the hotel still retains plenty of references to its former financial life, from the woodpanelled bank teller’s cabins which now hold booth seating in the restaurants to the membersonly Vault Room, which has the original 20-tonne door and 3,000 silver safety deposit boxes. The Grand Banking Hall has been transformed into a food court-style space with restaurants that include Italian Cecconi’s; Malibu Kitchen, inspired by healthy Californian fare; Jewish deli Zobler’s; and Asian-Pacific Kaia which serves up poke bowls and matcha pastries. Rooms range from intimate ‘Crash Pads’ with 1920s influenced bespoke floral wallpaper to ‘Heritage’ with French-polished walnut wall panelling, marble fireplaces and Art Deco dressing tables. There’s also a subterranean spa, a gym with a boxing ring and – perhaps the best spot of all – a rooftop pool where cityscape views stretch from St Paul’s Cathedral to the Gherkin. HENRIETTA, Covent Garden

Split across a pair of townhouses in one of the smartest streets off Covent Garden, this hotel is the result of a unique partnership between the Experimental Group and feted chef Ollie Dabbous, who earned a Michelin-star for his eponymous restaurant (now closed). And it’s his cooking that really makes this place a hit. The ground floor and glass-roof mezzanine are dedicated to the charming restaurant and bar, which has an open kitchen, foliage framed art and honeycomb-patterned terracotta tiles on the walls. The menu is seasonal but includes delicious dishes such as grilled flatbread with sesame labneh, topped with pickled vegetables and the prettiest spring blossoms; burrata with nectarine, honey and lemon thyme; and barbecued octopus served with crushed peas, broad beans and sour cream. Upstairs, the 18 rooms – brass lights on marble bedside tables, 1970s retro armchairs in pink velvet and fabric bedheads inspired by Milanese door frames – are designed by the group’s regular collaborator Dorothée Meilichzon. The Mrs Dalloway, a crowd-pleasing cocktail of aperol, peach, lime juice, lavender bitters and egg white, makes the perfect nightcap. BATTY LANGLEY’S, Shoreditch

Give the grande dames of the West End a miss and head east instead to where the hip crowd hang. But don’t fret, it’s not all as cool as you might think, unless deeply comfortable beds, squashy sofas, rich jewel tones, an honesty bar and even a dinky little terrace do it for you. No, at this little Georgian gem of a hotel, located down a cobbled street with oldfashioned lamplights, you won’t find some trendy designer with an unpronounceable name, a resident DJ or a crowd at the bar all dressed in black with thick glasses on, and thank goodness for that, we say. Instead you’ll find a warm and charming atmosphere; rooms filled with fourposters, swagged silks and proper heavy furniture. Stick around for breakfast in bed: you’ll feel rather like the Queen on your plumped up pillows tucking into a smoked salmon bagel and a crumbly croissant. And just two doors down you’ll find the extraordinary Dennis Severs’ House, which if you haven’t ever visited, you must: it’s one of the city’s most unusual off-the-beaten track attractions. THE BERKELEY, Knightsbridge

Unapologetically urban, but with a nod to a colourful global aesthetic, the recently unveiled redesign of areas of The Berkeley proves that you can indeed improve upon a classic. Architectural legend Richard Rogers is responsible for the dramatic new entrance, a towering glass canopy supported by sculpted carbon fibre beams. Inside, designer Robert Angell has worked real magic on the Collins Room, collaborating with de Gournay to create the gorgeous hand-painted wallpaper featuring cherry blossom and birds. It’s the prettiest place in London for high tea, but step across the lobby to the Blue Bar, where those classic Lutyens blue panels have been given a zany update with modern pops of colour and an intoxicatingly colourful cocktail menu. Upstairs, the first floor has been redesigned by the John Heath Design Studio, who have created exotic modern rooms mixing Asian and British design. Expect a sensual mixture of Thai silk, Chinese wool and Swedish wood to create an interior that’s artisanal but never twee, dramatic but always serene. Combined with the Bamford Haybarn Spa, with facials by Oskia, and a delicious rooftop pool, as well as breathtakingly good service, this is a hotel to return to, again and again. ew York can be bitterly cold come winter but the city puts on a Christmas show like no other. Make your base Baccarat’s flagship hotel on 53rd Street and check in for their Sparkling Season package – you’ll have your very own winter wonderland. Just think of all that crystal. What was the first dish you learnt to cook? A Victoria sandwich with my grandmother… the second was fairy cakes because we had three spoonfuls of mixture left over. Although, I would have rather licked the bowl. Least favourite ingredient? Saffron. For some reason I always avoid it but we do have saffron in the kitchen because we use saffron water in the ravioli paste to give it colour.

INGREDIENTS MAKES 24 FOR THE MINCEMEAT:

» 1 orange » 2 Granny Smith apples » 25g raisins » 250g currants » 75g mixed peel » 25ml brandy » 25ml rum » 15ml Grand Marnier » 300g light brown sugar » 50g shredded suet » 1 tsp ground nutmeg » 1 tsp mixed spice » 1 tsp ground ginger » 1 tsp ground cloves » 2 tsp ground cinnamon » 50g unsalted butter,

What’s your idea of the dream meal? By the Amalfi Coast or in Capri, for the delicious seafood and pasta, all beautifully hand-made, with one or two glasses of equally delicious wine.

METHOD

Zest and juice the orange and reserve both juice and zest. Cut what’s left of the orange into small pieces, then place in a small saucepan and fill with enough water to cover. Simmer for about one hour until completely soft, adding more water as needed to keep covered. In a large bowl, grate the apples. Add the remaining ingredients, except for the butter, and mix well. When the orange is soft, drain then combine with the reserved juice and zest in the blender and purée until cut into small cubes smooth. Stir the orange purée into the mincemeat mixture. Transfer and frozen to the jar or an airtight container and refrigerate for at least one week. Place the flour, butter and salt in a mixing bowl. Rub the butter into FOR THE PASTRY: » 350g plain flour, plus extra the flour until it resembles pea-sized pieces. Add the measured water for dusting and vinegar and mix until the dough comes together. Turn the dough » 220g cold unsalted butter, out on to your work surface. Gently knead two or three times to create cut into 1cm pieces » 1 tsp salt a semi-smooth dough with some small lumps of butter. Pat into a disc » 120g ice-cold water shape, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 45 minutes. » ½ tsp white wine vinegar On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out into a » 1 egg yolk, mixed with a splash of cream, for large circle, 1–2mm thick. Cut out a 7cm round in the edge the egg wash of the dough and double-check that it fits nicely into a cup » Caster sugar, for dusting in your mince pie tray before you cut out a further 23 circles. Lay the rounds directly into your mince pie trays. Cut out 24 smaller rounds, or stars, for the pie lids. Refrigerate all pastry shapes for 15–20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C. In a medium bowl, mix the mincemeat with the frozen butter cubes. Spoon one tablespoon of mincemeat into each case. Place the smaller rounds on top of each pie and gently press to create a seal. Brush with the egg wash. Bake the pies for 20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden. As soon as the pies come out of the oven, dust heavily with caster sugar. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. These can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week, but are best served warm.

Tell us something about yourself that you think we’d be surprised by? I’ve ridden a horse at The Horse of the Year show at Wembley. When you’re not on duty, where do you like to eat out in London? Perilla in Newington Green. It’s a bit of a trek for me but well worth the journey. Ben apprenticed with me, so I know him really well and enjoy his food. How would you describe life behind the scenes at Claridge’s? I liken the kitchen to being a train that never stops. It slows a little bit to allow people and goods on and off, and then it speeds up again and everyone has to be on board. What’s the best thing about Christmas at Claridge’s? The day they put the tree up in November, because nobody knows what it’s going to look like. How can we stop our turkey from drying out? Remove the legs, which helps to break down the bird and reduce cooking time. We bone and stuff the legs and cook the crown separately.

During the festive season, it starts to feel like we’ve been making mince pies forever, especially in the pastry department where, in the past, there could be a mise en place request for 5,000 pies to be made overnight. We typically make an average of 1,000 a week during the season.

Cliveden embodies the new wave country-house hotel – gone are the dress codes, heavy dishes and silver service, usurped by respectful informality, provenance of food and guest-driven service, and it’s all the better for it. In a venture with Doug McMaster, of Brighton’s pioneering restaurant Silo, the pair have turned conventional dining on its head. The Connaught has a knack for choosing chefs. First there was Michel Bourdin, who stayed for 26 years, then Angela Hartnett and Hélène Darroze followed. Only a chef as renowned as Jean-Georges Vongerichten could complete the picture. While Darroze’s offering is fancy schmancy, Jean-Georges’ spot is comforting and ‘casual’ (if you can call a £29 shrimp salad such). If spaceships had conservatories, this is what they would look like, with iridescent disc pendants suspended from the ceiling and a fiery stained glass window designed by artist Jean-Michel Othoniel. And that is not a criticism in the slightest, more to say that this place is fun, futuristic and progressive. A SKI CHALET Not only do you get great holidays, but they’re a shrewd long-term investment too, says Anna Tyzack

f skiing is your thing, nothing beats returning from a day in the powder to a relaxing bath in your own chalet. A slope-side home is the ultimate of lifestyle investments, according to Giles Gale of Mark Warner Property. Even Brexit and a weaker pound don’t seem to be holding British buyers back, he says. ‘Almost half of our buyers last year were British – so long as you choose the right resort and take a long-term view, property ownership in the Alps can be a fun and lucrative investment.’ The ‘right resort’ depends on your budget and the type of skiing you enjoy. Chamonix in France, for example, is famous for extreme off-piste skiing, while nearby Megève attracts those who appreciate a piste-side Michelin-star restaurant. There is also the question of travel: buyers, according to Lloyd Hughes of Athena Advisers, tend to fall into two categories; those that want to be in a resort within 90 minutes of an airport (Verbier and Zell am See fall into this category) and those that don’t mind the three and a half hours it takes to travel to further-flung resorts such as Val d’Isère. Unless you have the £5m required to buy a decent chalet in a prime resort such as Meribel in France or Verbier in Swizerland, Hughes recommends looking to ‘back door’ resorts, smaller, lesser-known villages that share the same ski areas – Tignes 1800, for example, a new Savoyarde-style resort in France which is linked to Val d’Isère. Here MGM Properties is selling 20 apartments from € 315,000, with access to

a spa with swimming pool, children’s paddling pool and gym (020 7494 0706; mgmfrenchproperties.com). France has the highest volume of managed new-build apartments and the cheapest mortgages. French resorts such as Alpe d’Huez and Châtel have the potential for future growth, Hughes continues, as they are in the process of being upgraded. ‘They had become a bit tired but all that is changing as more than € 200m is being pumped into the infrastructure of Alpe d’Huez.’ In these resorts increasing numbers of properties are failing to reach the standards required by letting agents, putting a rental premium on newer or more recently renovated apartments. For those after a pretty mountain village without

the high prices of premium resorts such as Lech in Austria and Zermatt in Switzerland, there is Obergurgl in Austria, a high altitude and traditionallooking resort in a snowy bowl, and also the lakeside resort of Zell am See, both of which have good potential for capital growth. ‘Zell am See attracts as many visitors in summer as in winter and is soon to be linked to the nearby resort of Saalbach, expanding the ski area to more than 300km,’ Gale explains. For families, Hughes also recommends Les Gets, an understated but charming alternative to Megève. ‘It’s tree-lined, sporty and beautiful in summer,’ he says. One-bed apartments in the new Front de Neige development, just metres from the main lift, cost from € 539,000 (020 7471 4500; athenaadvisers.com). Depending on when they were built (and the resort), the oldest chalets and apartments tend to have more character and are often more spacious, although buyers pay a premium. New builds, meanwhile, have the benefit of modern kitchens, underfloor heating and access to communal spas, sports facilities and management

schemes. ‘If you have to refit a ski property it can be a very expensive and time consuming process,’ he says. Before the 2008 credit crisis, British buyers were less concerned by the rental potential of their ski property but nowadays this tends to be a major consideration, according to Gale. If you buy a well-located, attractively finished property in a known although not necessarily prime resort, you can expect to achieve four or five per cent net yield on a short-term buy-to-let basis. France, Austria and Switzerland all have transparent buying processes and attractive finance options for British buyers – repayment mortgages of up to 85 per cent loan to value on a fixed rate of 1.2 per cent over 20 years in France. Here it is also possible to claim back VAT on your purchase: the buyer of the Penthouse at Cristal de Jade in Chamonix, on the market with MGM Properties and arguably the best apartment in the resort, can claim back € 500,000. Are you not limiting your scope for future ski holidays by locking yourself in to a particular resort? According to Jessica Delaney of Alpine Marketing, rather than binding you to one ski area, a managed alpine property can pay for you to enjoy other resorts. ‘You simply use the rental return to fund a trip to a different ski area,’ she explains. But if you invest in a resort you love, which has extensive skiing and a buzzy atmosphere, you will probably decide to stay put. Your own home in the mountains, according to Delaney, adds an X-factor to your ski holidays that is impossible to replicate in a hotel.

ON THE UP

Alpe d’Huez, France

With 300 days of sunshine and a €350m upgrade, Alpe d’Huez is one to watch, particularly given that it is due to be connected to Les Deux Alps by 2020.
