ven if your driving skills aren’t up to those of Fifth Gear presenter and all-round petrolhead, Vicki Butler-Henderson, it doesn’t mean you wouldn’t enjoy a racy little number. And now, car marques are seriously catching on. No longer do you have to sacrifice Isofix attachments and somewhere accessible to put your clutch bag for sheer horsepower and a legs akimbo exit. The world’s greatest supercar brands, including Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati and McLaren, now have women at the forefront of their design process and Vicki for one is suitably impressed. Read her feature and see if she can persuade you to trade in the Chelsea tractor for something a little more dashing (p83). I doubt racing driver Bruce McLaren paid much heed to the fairer sex’s driving prowess but Jeremy Taylor did get to follow in his tyre tracks as he joined a one-off, invitationonly trip to New Zealand. Taking in both the North and South Islands, the stream of McLarens certainly proved a showstopper along the way, despite being restricted to a maximum of 62mph (and the New Zealand police are very, very strict). Read about his incredible journey on page 98. Charley Boorman probably couldn’t give a damn about which four-wheeler he drives.

Racing driver Max Chilton takes it down a gear in Cornwall
What is the next thing you’d like to buy for your house? All the fun boy things like a retractable hose and a lawnmower. I want to have a really organised garage, where everything has its own place. Where do you escape to? I still go down to Cornwall with a big group of friends every year and moor the boat out at sea to listen to music. The restaurants there are amazing, I go to Padstow or Nathan Outlaw’s.
What’s the best thing about Britain?
Where did you grow up? I grew up in or around Reigate in Surrey and I still live there today. I can be at Gatwick in ten minutes, or Heathrow in 30, which is handy for me because I travel so often. What did your parents do? My mum was a receptionist at the InterContinental in London and later worked at an advertising company, while my dad was an insurance broker. Most vivid childhood memory? We always spent our family holidays in Rock, Cornwall, so that’s where most of my best childhood memories are from. My parents used to tuck us up in the car late at night and drive the four hours down there while we were sleeping. We’d wake up early to build sandcastles on the beach. What was your first job? I’ve never done anything but motorsports, so my first job was probably getting pocket money from my parents for cleaning their cars. I got into go-karting at a really young age – about 90 per cent of racing drivers begin with go-karting – and it all went from there. I’m now racing in America in IndyCar. What’s left to tick off your bucket list? I’m really

We’re pretty resilient. Though we’re going through a rocky patch now, we’ve shown we can pull together. When I take off from Heathrow (which is usually at least once a week) it’s really noticeable how green it is – which is amazing given that it’s basically London. Share a secret address in London... The Phene pub in Chelsea for drinks, Daphne’s for amazing Italian – that’s our anniversary place. Eccleston Square Hotel is really close to Victoria and only has a few rooms, but has a really nice feel to it. Saturday night you’ll find me... Having dinner – I’m not into loud music and paying loads to sit in a dark club. I’m a bit of an old man really. That’s why I like the pub! My working life is complicated, so I like to keep it simple at home. Sunday morning means... Phew... we made it... so we had to have a little shindig. The Rosewood hotel in Holborn was the perfect venue to host 300 of our closest friends, who downed endless bottles of Ruinart, feasted on sumptuous Rosewood canapés, enjoyed Elizabeth Marsh’s fabulous floral displays and were serenaded by the Welsh National Opera, no less. Artist Bobby Niven teamed up with architect Iain MacLeod to create a new generation of bothies with a serious design edge, where artists and writers can go offgrid and find inspiration in Scotland’s dramatic scenery. For the Edinburgh Art Festival, Bobby has gone solo. The bothies I designed with Iain MacLeod in Scotland capture the excitement of travelling. One of them is called Sweeney’s Bothy on the island of Eigg. We got a lot of ribbing from locals when we first got there but we had great rapport with them after a while. We had to get a lot of help from them too – they advised when to build and where. We built it through the winter and only had five dry days in the five months of the build.

Edinburgh Art Festival’s commissions programme is this year based around Patrick Geddes’ 1917 book The Making of the Future. At first people find it frustrating that it takes an hour and a half to make a coffee, but the chance to slow down a wee bit is lovely. After a few days they find that waiting time valuable – it gives you time to digest ideas.

Having just introduced ex-Labour MP Tristram Hunt as their new director, it appears ‘change’ is the watchword at the V&A. After years of planning and building work, the museum is to open its new £50m extension on Exhibition Road. Designed by AL_A, a company led by Stirling prize-winning architect Amanda Levete, it will include a new 1,100 square metre underground gallery with a folded plate ceiling inspired by ornate Neoclassical museum design. Between each fold, light will shine through from the courtyard above and make a geometric pattern on the floor which changes as the day progresses. If only all architecture could be this romantic. The famous Mariinsky Ballet from Moscow is about to dazzle audiences with a new interpretation of La Bayadère at Covent Garden. In a departure from their usual classical work, this triumph of athleticism explores the fusion of Indian dance with the European tradition. Set in a mythical India this is a drama of love and redemption. The heroine temple dancer Nikiya’s expressive dancing and her love for the dashing warrior Solor are touching in their simplicity whilst his solo rises to leaps of controlled artistry in a vital set piece Kingdom of the Shades. The corps de ballet is no less impressive and the entire event is supported by a splendid orchestra. For exoticism and romance in a contemporary work, it is hard to match this brilliantly colourful production. 10–12 August. roh.org.uk

As an opening salvo to a year-long celebration of India and its historic links to Britain, Cambridge’s magnificently out-of-scale Palladian museum the Fitzwilliam Museum presents From Kabul to Kolkata: Highlights of Indian Painting, images from the royal Courts of India in the early modern period between the 16th and 17th centuries. After the Emperors of the Mughal ascendancy had swept all before them – warrior kings from the wilds of Asia, descendants of Genghis Khan and the ferocious Tamburlaine – they soon settled into a luxurious life in the languid courts of a more peaceful India. Keen to incorporate the beautiful – and sexy – gods of the Hindu culture into their newly founded art collections, these Muslim rulers had a sequence of delightful paintings commissioned. The dashing hero Vishnu, with a figure like a first division football player, courts the beautiful Radha in glorious glades of trees and flowers – and in other paintings they lie indoors in bed together, Vishnu’s wonderful torso and Radha’s lovely form on full display. The powerful kings also show a passion for animals and birds, so elephants are featured with almost comically human faces. A glorious exhibition and a great tease for the marvels of India to come later in the year. Until 3 September. fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk

If the last few years have been all about the naturalistic look and minimal invention, prepare yourself for the arrival of the highly stylised Victorian bedding revival. Take your lead from historic designers like William Andrews Nesfield, who popularised Renaissance parterres for a 19th century audience by ‘embroidering’ them – think elaborate box clipped patterns mixed with colourful plants – and gardens like English Heritage’s Witley Court in Worcestershire (below). We warn you now, this trend is high maintenance.
Vita Sackville-West often found herself ‘drunk on roses’. You only have to step a foot into the garden of her old home, Sissinghurst Castle, which she shared with her husband Harold Nicolson, and you will see why. When they first bought the Elizabethan palace, the flower beds were filled with rusty bed steads and old sardine tins but she transformed it into her own realisation of Sleeping Beauty’s castle. THE DASHING LORD
What really happens when you inherit a country estate and a small fortune to go with it? Lord Pembroke remembers the moment with JEREMY TAYLOR
T
aking a new girlfriend back to meet the parents can be awkward – especially if she doesn’t know the family home is one of Britain’s most spectacular country estates and your father is the 17th Earl of Pembroke. ‘I studied at Leeds University and people just called me Will Herbert. I didn’t want everyone to know that I was Little Lord Fauntleroy, with a 14,000-acre estate in Wiltshire and all the trimmings,’ recalls Lord Pembroke. ‘When we arrived at the gates of Wilton House, my girlfriend went very quiet. Later, she mistakenly sent me a text intended for one of her girlfriends. It read “OMG! He lives in a stately home!” Things fell apart after that.’ After leaving Bryanston School, Lord Pembroke completed a foundation course in 3D computer graphics at Leeds. He then graduated with a first-class honours degree in industrial design from Sheffield University. ‘I played computer games like every other teenager but I’d found my calling with design and I was good at it. After Sheffield, I got a job with Sebastian Conran in London and loved every minute.’ By his early twenties, the future 18th Earl was already one of Britain’s most eligible bachelors, first in line to inherit an estimated £115m fortune but hardly spoken of in the gossip columns. ‘The problem with that situation is trying to keep a focus and pursuing a career path of your own. I really loved growing up at Wilton House but my priority was design – I had absolutely no interest in farming or the countryside.’ August 2017 | COUNTRYANDTOWNHOUSE.CO.UK | 75

Lord Pembroke’s father was Henry Herbert, the film and television director famous for 1976 coming-of-age movie, Emily. The soft porn film starred Koo Stark, who would later date Prince Andrew before he married Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York. ‘Dad had been sick with cancer but I still didn’t imagine I would take over from him until many years later. He was only 64 when he died in 2003. I was still young and had absolutely no idea or training for the role that was expected of me.’ On paper, the new Lord Pembroke had plenty to look forward to. Apart from a mention on the Sunday Times Rich List, the state rooms at Wilton House were originally designed by Inigo Jones and included £250m of art by Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Dyck. However, the 18th Earl had a more pressing problem. He was 25, unmarried and without an heir. ‘That was another pressure I had to deal with. My life suddenly changed overnight and I was forced to leave the job I loved to take on a new challenge.’ There was help at hand, however, from his stepfather, the businessman Stuart Wyndham Murray Threipland. Together

they have overseen a growth in the affairs of the 16thcentury estate for the first time in centuries. ‘Like many country estates with high running costs, we have had to diversify. But instead of selling land and property to keep going, we are now in the position to expand,’ says Lord Pembroke, now 38. Wilton House has also been commissioned as a film set, used as a backdrop for screen dramas like The Crown – the stately interior doubles for Buckingham Palace – The Young Victoria and Johnny English Reborn. Lord Pembroke then incorporated his passion for cars into the family business, establishing the Wilton Classic and Supercar show in 2009. Lord Pembroke has been tight-lipped about the reasons why this summer’s show has been cancelled but his passion for motoring remains undiminished. The coach house at Wilton House is loaded with a 200mph Bugatti Veyron, a classic E-Type Jaguar and a rare Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. ‘I find it very easy to buy cars but much harder to sell them,’ he says. Admittedly, Lord Pembroke did sell a couple of his late father’s paintings by David Hockney for a down payment on the £1m Bugatti. ‘There is just no room in the house for modern art and I decided to let them go. The money didn’t cover the full cost – I must have been the only Veyron owner to buy the car on a contract!’ In 2010, Lord Pembroke sealed another important contract when he married Scottish heiress Victoria Bullough. The couple met four years earlier via a mutual friend in London. ‘We were actually introduced on the dance floor of a nightclub on the King’s Road. I think it was set up but I was very lucky to meet her.’ The couple now have four children and continue the family tradition of living at Wilton House, with a flat in London. ‘When I was a child, my bedroom was in one of the towers. That room has been left almost untouched since I was a teenager, and I hope one of my children will take it over soon. n

BACK IN THE SADDLE
After a shocking motorbike accident almost left him without a leg, Charley Boorman is now back and raring to go, says HUGH FRANCIS ANDERSON
I
n 2004, Charley Boorman embarked on his round-theworld motorcycle journey with best friend Ewan McGregor. Since then he has firmly established himself as an advocate for the petrol-fuelled world of adventure travel. But, in February last year, he was involved in a motorcycle accident while in Portugal for the launch of the Triumph Tiger Explorer, so severely that he almost lost his left leg. But now, only 18 months later, Charley is back in the saddle, pursuing adventure with more enthusiasm than ever before. I meet Charley at his family home in Barnes, where his elderly spaniel greets me with a wagging tail and a few licks. ‘This is Ziggy,’ Charley says with a wide smile, welcoming me in. A year and a half on from his horrific crash, Charley’s light limp is a welcome sight. ‘The crash was savage,’ he says, slumping onto the sofa, ‘I’ve been riding for 40 years, and I’ve broken loads of bones in the past, especially riding off road on dirt bikes and enduro bikes, where that’s just part of the cycle,’ he says nonchalantly, ‘but this was just brutal, the left leg
was really badly broken, the tibia and fibula were smashed to pieces and even came out of my leg.’ Charley reaches for his phone and shows me the X-rays, which are every bit as gruesome as his description. ‘I remember trying to stand up and it was just this big floppy thing,’ he says gesticulating wildly. But, in true Boorman fashion, it didn’t take him long to get back on two wheels. ‘I’ve been riding for a little while now, I was on my wife’s moped for a long time, and it was great because I could get the cage supporting my leg in the foot well, which, of course, I couldn’t get on a normal bike,’ he laughs. The son of famed filmmaker John Boorman, renowned for movies such as Deliverance and Point Blank, Charley spent much of his younger years in County Wicklow, Ireland, when not travelling with his father. It was here that his thirst for the outdoors originated. ‘My dad was quite into horses, so we had

we were out, we could just breathe. It took a good few weeks to get into the journey, the moment you’re out of Europe and getting further east, it all starts to kick off. And then it’s something new every day.’ Charley’s next TV programme, Race to Dakar, documented his participation in the Dakar Rally, one of the world’s toughest endurance motoring races. Severely breaking his hands when he crashed in the Sahara desert, Charley was forced to retire after just five days, but stayed with the team to help and support his fellow teammate, Simon Pavey, to the finish line. ‘It was really hard work,’ says Charley, ‘but by breaking my hands, and then staying and filming what was going on in the back end, I got a much better perspective on everything.’ Would he tackle it again? ‘I loved doing it, and I’d love another opportunity to do it again. I’m a much better rider now and more confident.’ After such incredible adventures, I wonder what Charley likes most about riding motorcycles. ‘I like the freedom of it. You have to drive a car, but you choose to ride a motorbike. I love the fact that when you travel somewhere, the experience is completely different. When you arrive somewhere and you’re all dusty, you’re part of the environment, so there’s an immediate connection. When you’re in a vehicle, people step out of their environment and into yours, so you’re disconnected, I like the immediateness of riding a motorbike.’ After Race to Dakar, Charley went on to film The Long Way Down, in which he rode from John O’Groats to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, once again with Ewan. The Long Way Round, The Long Way Down... is there ever going to be The Long Way Up? ‘There has been talk of it, and Ewan and I like the idea of doing it when we’re older so we can be two grumpy old men reminiscing on how it was back in “our” day,’ he chuckles. ‘The obvious spot would be South America, from the southern tip up, that would be incredible, and maybe we could finish in LA with a huge ride out.’ Alongside his adventuring exploits, Charley is a busy man. He spends his time working with UNICEF, a partnership first explored during The Long Way Round, as well as Dyslexia Action, due to his own severe dyslexia. He has written a new book, Long Way Back, which is part autobiography, part recovery story from the crash in Portugal. He also runs motorcycle tours through Africa. ‘It’s really important to me, and I love introducing people to Africa,’ he says. ‘Most people don’t remember that Africa is a continent not a country, so the idea is to get people down there.’ So what’s next? ‘I’m doing a lot of work for Triumph at the moment, and there are some big plans for the next couple of years. I need to be busy now as I lost all of last year, and the year before I was prepping for a TV show, which I had to stop because of breaking my leg, so I’m itching to get out now.’ There’s no quelling an adventurous spirit and with that I take my leave. n
‘I realised with a bike you didn’t have to muck it out or brush it down, you could abuse it, then lean it against a wall and head home’ a few, and as we lived in the middle of nowhere, I used to do quite a lot of riding and hunting,’ he reminisces. ‘What I loved about hunting was that you never knew where you were going, and if there was suddenly a fence or a hedge, you’d be over it; it was so exciting.’ So when did motorcycles come into the picture? ‘I must have only been about ten, and I went around a field on a Maico 400 owned by a guy who lived in the village. Unable to touch the pegs, I promptly fell off, and that was it.’ In a household of horse riders, and with five sisters, it must have been an interesting transition from horseback to motorcycles. ‘I realised that with a bike you didn’t have to muck it out, brush it down, clean the tack, etc, you could just abuse it, then lean it against a wall and head home,’ he says. ‘I used to head off into the Wicklow Mountains with a friend, strap some petrol in a jerry can to the back of the bike, ride until I ran out of fuel, fill it up and head back home. It was brilliant.’ Which no doubt, years later, led him to The Long Way Round, a motorbike trip from London to New York, with Ewan McGregor. ‘Ewan and I met a long time ago on a film, and we both loved bikes, we did track days together and helped run a team,’ says Charley. ‘We then did weekend rides, but always looked to go further and further. We first wanted to ride to the south of Spain, then to China. Ewan rang me up and said, “If we go to China, we may as well cross the Bering Strait and ride over to New York,” and it went from there.’ The journey, which covered some 20,000 miles, across 12 countries in 115 days, was an enormous feat to undertake, and one that must have come with many difficulties. ‘I remember putting all my gear on and saying goodbye to everyone, and the temperature just getting hotter and hotter. You think you’ll never get out of London, let alone survive the trip,’ he says with a grin, ‘But, once 80 | COUNTRYANDTOWNHOUSE.CO.UK | August 2017

up of women who run their own businesses, are independently wealthy and many of whom are mums, too,’ he continues. ‘Women are involved in the car design as well, with a female running the team responsible for the interior of our latest car, the DB11. We notice that women customers pay much closer attention to choosing the colour and material combinations for the interior of their cars, much more so than men who don’t want confusion or to be hassled with choice. We have really taken personalisation on board and can colour-match the exact shade of your favourite shoe if desired.’ Attention to detail. Lovely. And it’s nuances like these that sportscar makers are focusing on, rather than going all out to create a car specifically designed for women. Because, really, who’d want a car that had been designed solely for a woman? Remember the backlash when BIC brought out a pink pen for women? T
wo of the most expensive things we can ever buy are cars and houses. Two of the most emotional investments we can ever make also happen to be cars and houses. We can fall in love with high ceilings and bay windows just as much as we can be left breathless by a car’s design – the glimpse of a Porsche 911’s rear-end as it slips onto the King’s Road, or the profile of a Rolls-Royce Phantom gliding away from a country-house hotel. Jenni Murray on BBC Radio Four’s Woman’s Hour once asked me how I, or anyone, could be so passionate about a metal box on wheels. Well, cars can be beautiful and exciting and they have bewitched me since I started racing at the age of 12. Driving a car sideways at high speed and to the point where it looks like it’s out of control – as I sit behind the wheel, fully in control – is my one talent and it gives me unfiltered joy. But cars don’t have to be on the ragged edge of noise and adhesion for us to love them – in the same way that a box made of bricks and mortar doesn’t have to move for us to adore it. Car manufacturers understand this and know that tapping into these human responses will result in sales. And with 60 per cent of new cars in the UK being bought by women in the UK, and more on the say-so of women, it’s clear who is really in the driving seat. Certain markets have already taken note. ‘Sportscar makers have ignored the important female market for the last five to ten years. And that’s unacceptable,’ says Marek Reichman, Chief Creative Officer at Aston Martin – the British-based makers of luxury sportscars are one of the most recognised brands in the world. It has been adorning our roads, bedroom walls and James Bond, with glorious machines for over 100 years. ‘Today we have a female advisory board made

When I went on my first car launch as a motoring journalist back in the early 1990s, I was asked by an old-school male hack if I was there ‘to check out where to put a handbag’. His answer came as I lapped him on the racing circuit but, for every handbag hook that might be needed, so will a place to wedge a wallet. Nobody can conceive a car exclusively for ladies because, just like men, we need a steering wheel, seat, engine and all the rest. ‘There’s no need to pink it and shrink it,’ says Marek Reichman. ‘And neither do you have to be a 1950s Formula One driver either. Cars today have electronic aids so you don’t need to be a brute to drive them.’ Incidentally, the pink Aston Martins usually go to the guys in Qatar. Marek’s most recently penned machine to hit the road is the DB11. It is one of the most exquisite pieces of metal I have ever seen – automotive haute couture. It’s also the first car I’ve ever driven that has continuously been waved out of side roads by other drivers wanting a better look. For women drivers there have been some thoughtfully considered design enrichments – the steering wheel has been subtly shaped

for a smaller hand (though you’d never feel that unless you were told), the seat adjusts for a wide range of heights to now include women in the 50th percentile (5ft 3in) and there’s a large storage box between the front seats for women to put a clutch bag – a direct request from Aston’s female advisory board wanting their handbags closer than in a glove box. Two childfriendly ISOFIX-ready rear seats make it refreshingly practical, too. Aston Martin is also strongly aware that the spotlight shouldn’t just be on a car when it comes to appealing to women – it should also be on the welcome women are given in a showroom and the language that’s used once they’re there. Men commonly want to know power and torque figures – as do women – but they also want to talk about residual values and the environmental impact of the car they are considering. Women are doing a lot more research now and arming themselves with knowledge way before entering a showroom. Dealers, take note. One of Ferrari’s most popular models for female owners is the convertible California, though it is not targeted solely in their direction. ‘We want women to buy a Ferrari because they enjoy driving, not because

W
ith a capital boasting the oldest cathedral and fortress in the New World, lush, verdant forest which covers soaring mountains, spectacular beaches and, of course, rum, cigars and chocolate, the Dominican Republic has long been one of the jewels in the Caribbean crown. Until recently though, there has never been a hotel that pulled the travelling cognoscenti in the way that other neighbouring islands have done. Step up Amanera, which opened at the end of 2015 overlooking the flawless sweep of Playa Grande’s golden sands from its perch on the cliff tops high above. It is on the north coast of the island, an hour away from Puerto Plata airport, past villages clad in colourful Caribbean graffiti, where the evocative beat of music seeps into the car as you drive through. The arrival is memorable – just a glint of sea is visible – through the John Heah designed Casa Grande, the main hotel building. As you descend to enter the lobby and reception, you are treated first to split-level water features, then an infinity pool and finally the sea – blue upon blue upon blue – visible in one sweeping glance. Beyond are 25 casitas, built into terraces that run down to the palm-fringed sands. Half of them

have private pools; all have huge terraces, and interiors of polished concrete, teak and handmade Aguayo tiles in soft blues. Sparingly decorated, their starkness allows the main attraction to be the outside which dominates through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Beneath you lies the Amanera Beach Club Restaurant, where you can dig your toes in the sand and dine off delicious blackened tuna with palm heart salad while deciding if you have time for a dip before lunch. After lunch you should walk along the beach, famous on the island for its beauty, past the also new, Playa Grande Beach Club, whose enchanting, white-latticed, woodwork bungalows, in various pastel washes, peep through the palms lining the beach. Continue on and you find a little restaurant by the sands, a favourite of the locals, where the lobster is lip-smackingly good. Turn around to walk home and you see Amanera in the distance, its low-lying structure atop the huge cliffs which rise 60 feet up from the shore. Behind the hotel buildings is the golf course, marking a first for Aman resorts, who have never before had a golf-integrated hotel. The course, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. was refreshed by his son Rees Jones and is a beauty. Traditionally, this is done before a journey to provide a new beginning, cleansing the body, mind and soul. Head out then, refreshed, to see the island. First stop should be the little fishing village of Río San Juan. Here you can rent one of the colourful wooden boats and explore the Laguna Gri Gri, a freshwater lagoon which is lined with mangroves. Stop near one of the pristine beaches and snorkel or go into a sea cave to find nesting swallows. The little village itself boasts a vibrant street art scene with bold murals and graffiti interspersing the shops selling larimar jewellery. Larimar is a rare blue rock that exists only in the Dominican Republic and adorns many pendants here. Look too for maracas – hollow balls made from dried gourd shells filled with seeds or dried beans – an essential instrument for Bachata, the island’s music. You might also see zemís, made from native Guayacan wood, handcrafted by local artisans. Originating from the indigenous Taíno people, these zemís were worshipped as physical representation of gods and spirits. More for the body than the soul, chocolate is a good buy, with the island home to fine quality organic cocoa. Dominican chocolate offers a variety of flavours from wood, tobacco and spice to fresh fruits. Look out for a local family company called Kah Kow, which produces excellent chocolate and has over a century’s experience in planting,

harvesting and producing the first organic chocolate on the island. And then there are the cigars and rum. The local drink is called Mama Juana and has a reputation for being an aphrodisiac. It is a potent mix of equal amounts of rum, red wine and honey, which are allowed to steep with local leaves, dried bark and herbs for a month before drinking. For the cigars you must go to Babunoco, a restaurant in the jungle-clad hills nearby, where after wholesome family food you can pull up a chair and get a lesson in how to roll cigars from the Chef Patron, Juan Alberto Martinez. With more than a decade’s experience at Arturo Fuente, one of the Domincan Republic’s most exclusive cigar brands, Juan Alberto is a fount of knowledge, explaining the difference between the varieties of cigar and how to blend, roll and press the tobacco. But it is the views that are the memory I treasure most from my stay here. Of course dawn rising over a deserted golden beach, sea coming in awash with gentle, egg-white, foam, is magnificent, but best of all was the onset of night. From a seat in the bar, you could watch the beautifully designed pool beneath you merge into the inky blue of dusk. Then a dinner of scallop ceviche with mango and mojito foam, followed by caramelised mahi-mahi, as the silver moon begins to rise into the black night. Then, the moment when its height allowed it to be reflected in the dark waters of the infinity pool beneath. Silence and silver; a world caressed by silver light and the moon at your feet. In the Tyre Tracks of McLaren McLaren wanted to offer customers a special holiday – they did it in New Zealand for a group of millionaires – and Jeremy Taylor
I
t’s every car enthusiast’s dream adventure – a 1,040-mile drive through the spiritual home of McLaren on some of the finest roads in the Southern Hemisphere. The Surrey-based car-maker wanted to commemorate the life of Kiwi-born founder Bruce McLaren in style. The Epic New Zealand Road Tour was years in the making but ultimately delivered a mouth-watering display of auto exotica. Only McLaren owners were invited, paying up to £50,000 for the chance to travel from as far away as California, Hong Kong and the Lebanon to take part. The hot metal on show included every current model, plus a P1 hypercar and the Holy Grail of McLarens – a priceless F1 from the 1990s. Mingling with customers was five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell – himself a McLaren driver in the late 1960s. Bruce’s daughter Amanda was there too, as well as former Williams F1 driver Bruno Senna, nephew of the legendary Ayrton and now a McLaren test driver himself. The exclusive drive from Auckland

to Queenstown would wind its way down the country on a specially designed route. It would include track days, spectacular scenery, a helicopter ride with All Blacks rugby hero Richie McCaw, plus the very best food, wine and hotels that New Zealand could offer. ‘New Zealand is a special place for anybody involved with McLaren,’ said Bruno Senna. ‘Bruce was a grand prix-winning driver, a pioneering car designer and founder of one of the most successful F1 teams in history. Like my uncle, he deserves to be called a legend.’ The police have ‘legendary’ powers to control bad driving in New Zealand too, so McLaren was determined the event wouldn’t turn into a Gumball Rally. The ‘Boy Racer Rule’ allows courts to deter persistent speeding offenders by confiscating their car – then having it crushed. The maximum speed limit is 62mph, officers hand out tickets for cutting corners and motorists can lose their licence for exceeding the speed limit by just 25mph. Organisers must have expected more than a few run-ins with the police during the trip.

There’s little to mark the track’s illustrious motoring past but other winners included Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and Bruce’s fellow countryman, Chris Amon. Later, the tour stops at the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, about three hours from Auckland at Taupo, in the centre of the North Island. The track session was planned as a chance for owners to ‘size up’ fellow drivers and show off their driving skills, although heavy rain prevented a full on assault on the lap record. Later, he won the New Zealand Grand Prix Association’s Driver To Europe scheme for promising racers. McLaren joined the Cooper factory team in England alongside Jack Brabham and won the 1959 United States Grand Prix – the youngest ever winner at that time. After more victories he set up McLaren Motor Racing, which competed in F1 and then very successfully in Can-Am. McLaren died on the Lavant straight at Goodwood in 1970 while testing a new Can-Am car. He famously wrote in a 1964 motor racing book: ‘To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy.’ So it was only right that McLaren owners on the Epic Tour took a detour 30 miles south of Auckland, to drive past Pukekohe Park Raceway. Now a horse racing venue, Pukekohe originally opened in 1963 as the venue for the New Zealand Grand Prix. Los Angeles A weekend in LA, flying from London, are you completely insane? Hear me out, says Sam Kinchin-Smith

It’s also the city of sprawl, though, woven out of 6,500 miles of roads. Which makes your choice of basecamp even more important than usual. You’ll find one of the world’s most iconic hotels in each of the city’s centres, from Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard, to Hotel Bel-Air in the hills of the Platinum Triangle, via Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica. But these felt

like plastic palaces whereas I wanted to drain a martini or five before returning to the Art Deco grit of a real neighbourhood for the night, flashing with taco stands, concert halls and gay bars. Reader, I went downtown, and with the Millennium Biltmore looking a bit tired these days, turned instead to the Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza. Here were huge, handsome rooms with whole-wall windows towering over the city; here too the all-important perfectly formed gym and pool to splash away the jet lag, a gorgeous La La Land piano bar, and God’s own weekend brunch.

I
t’s true that a total flight time of almost 24 hours makes the prospect of a weekend – in the strictest sense – in Los Angeles sound like an irredeemably bonkers idea. Add a day either end, though, and it becomes the most thrilling, otherworldly, glamorous weekender imaginable. Arrive having lost, in terms of LA time, just three hours, then plan a red-eye return journey so that you’re able to skip straight off the plane into a working day back home, and you’ll realise that Cali isn’t so very far away. A first-class cabin is advisable for moments like this, but I’d also recommend the budget option: Xanax, baby! I bought two from an Uber driver who looked like George Michael and was, inevitably, ‘only driving to make money during a dry patch’ in his career as a singer-songwriter. Because this is LA, where the western world’s most beautiful people come to make it, or break it in such a way that it looks like they’re having more fun anyway. Do you really want to be somebody who chooses Bruges over the city of stars?

This isn’t something you’re allowed to say in polite company any more, but thank Christ for Uber: it’s made great LA itineraries possible, like a morning spent with the Griffith Observatory’s impossible-to-resist views; followed by a meander up shockingly trashy Hollywood Boulevard, dodging hunks reduced to dressing up as Superman; then west to Venice Beach, where the crusties, body-poppers, musclemen and jugglers come together in a mad, vagrant drum circle as the sun goes down; and finally, a road trip by night along Mulholland Drive, with Angelo Badalamenti on the stereo and the bright fog of the city below. After driving for a day, spend the next day walking. The Omni is only a block away from The Broad, one of the most exciting new museums in the world, thanks to Yayoi Kusama’s ‘Infinity Mirrored Room’. Next door is the Walt Disney Concert Hall, a cubist, stainless steel rose designed by Frank Gehry which is home to America’s best orchestra, the LA Phil. But the most potent culture to be found in Los Angeles is on the streets, as the rambunctious everyday suddenly melts into the eerie choreography of a film set. Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica
LIVE LIKE A LOCAL… There’s a gentler, friendlier Los Angeles just beneath the surface, or rather just around the corner, if you know where to look. Sidestep the celebrity watchers by drinking coffee in Larchmont Village, hitting the beach just a little way beyond Malibu at peaceful Paradise Cove, nibbling a path though The Original Farmers Market in Fairfax, then grabbing a BBQ supper in Koreatown.
WHATEVER YOU DO... You’re in the capital of the world’s creepiest religion, Scientology, so be sure to make the most of it with a tour of the L. Ron Hubbard Life Exhibition. Or if you’d rather maintain a little more distance, there’s a great brunch spot, radical theatre and record store on Franklin Avenue, in the shadow of the Celebrity Centre.

Brunch at the Omni is a hell of thing, supercharged with a massive seafood display of snow crab and shrimp, menudo and haejang-guk hangover soups, slow-roasted brisket and bottomless mimosas. Brunch is one of the four cornerstones of LA cuisine, along with sushi, Mexican food and Silver Lake affectation. Stay downtown for parts one and two: the famous Grand Central Market is a short stroll from the Omni, past the Angels Flight funicular, and accommodates long-established stands selling south-of-the-border staples unafraid of hog maw, tongue and blood sausage. Then distract as many washed-up matinée idols as it takes to get you to the front of Keizo Seki’s queue: at Sushi Zo, there’s only one 25-course menu, and it cleaves buttery diamonds out of jellyfish, albacore and monkfish liver. If greasy gorditas are at one end of the scale, and exquisitely ritualistic sushi journeys are at the other, then the hipster joints uptown are somewhere in the middle. I had candy cane beets and ironic lobster rolls at Sawyer, halfway down never-ending Sunset Boulevard, interspersed with raw activated charcoal cocktails.

There’s a rumour among the locals that Elounda’s resorts like to keep their clientele within their four rather beautifully bougainvillea-clad walls. And when you’re somewhere like Elounda Peninsula, enviably positioned with jaw-dropping views of the glittering Aegean just about everywhere you turn, and with a ninehole golf course, Six Senses spa (always a massive bonus in our book), private beach and an impeccable kids’ club (complete with pool and water slides), it would be easy to while away your time exclusively here, but it would be a mistake. Not because the all-suite hotel, designed in simple Cretan style (lots of wood, huge pots in corridors, textiles framed on walls with a large dose of naval influence), each with its own private pool, choice of ten restaurants and utterly charming staff (without exception pretty much), it’s just that it’s not really the real Crete. And while you might spot Charlize Theron, Lady Gaga and (while we were there) Lily Allen over your breakfast croissants, once you hit the open road you’re more likely to be tucking into morningcaught fish, a big bowl of Greek salad and a local chilled white either with locals or travellers who want a bit more of an authentic experience. What you must do is take a boat trip to Spinalonga from nearby pretty Elounda town or Plaka, a few kilometres further along
the coast (both lovely spots for lunch or supper too with their proliferance of seaside restaurants). A perfect morning excursion, this former medieval fortress was also home to a leper colony from 1903 to 1957 and is the subject of Victoria Hislop’s The Island. Children will love rambling along the ramparts and climbing up the rocky incline to the top with its amazing views. You can also walk to semi-deserted beaches with water as clear as gin (though go early before the party boats arrive) and drive the hairpin roads through Cretan villages where women in black sit outside on their porches under the shade to find tavernas with no menu, just the daily catch. Kids will love it either way. This is a hotel as high end, super smart resort. Polished and glamorous on the outside – with huge swathes of beaches, numerous lovely restaurants, a buzzy kids’ club and giant bedrooms with views. Some have mini swimming pools out on a big veranda. While they don’t get the sun all day, if you seek privacy be sure to bag two that interlink, because despite the incredible good looks, mothers need not panic; families are truly welcomed. The beaches and restaurants are properly bucket and spade kiddie friendly (chicken nuggets and ketchup galore) and your children will love a cupcake cookery lesson in the hotel kitchens with creations that end up looking worthy of a bakery. The spa is also lovely. A little bit Japanese, a little bit Balinese – lots of Bonsai trees, plenty of calming wood, mini teapots filled with fresh ginger tea – but it’s the intuition of the therapists that truly brings it to life. They’ll find those tired shoulders and bring them back to life. There’s also a lovely indoor pool, a super swanky giant gym, steams, saunas and hydro pools. Honestly, what more could you want? This glorious 19th-century wine estate is a stroke of genius, cleverly mixing fabulous hotel facilities with the freedom of self-catering. Set among the glistening vineyards of the Languedoc, the 28 super spacious apartments and villas will make you weep with joy, made up of the original wine cellar, grape-pickers’ lodgings, barns, blacksmith’s house and gardener’s cottage. There are studios but it’s a family dream here, so pack up the little ones and book one of the four Maisons de la Cave, which sleep six. Your own little island in the middle of a 100-acre lake, reached by crossing a private bridge, where you’ll find a wooden, two storey retreat to hunker down in with your gang (it sleeps 11). Sneak downstairs early in the morning for precious, peaceful moments looking out across the still water before everyone else wakes up. Then it’s all action as youngsters go wild for kayaking and paddle-boarding, and spend hours exploring the nearby coves in the Irish rowing boat. Inside Scoop Alex Mackay’s frozen yoghurt will cause a ripple of excitement
Raspberry jam ripple frozen yoghurt This is a simple way of making ‘ice cream’. It’s tangy, refreshing and delicious, just the thing for a summer’s afternoon. You don’t absolutely need an ice cream machine for this recipe but the texture will be smoother and lighter if the frozen yoghurt is made in one.
Directions
INGREDIENTS SERVES TWO FOR THE JAM (makes 1.9kg): » 1kg jam sugar » Grated zest of 1 orange » Grated zest and juice (3 tbsp) of 1 lemon » 1kg raspberries » Jam thermometer FOR THE ICE CREAM » 1 x 250g tub full-fat yoghurt (the more fat the better), or fromage blanc » 250g raspberry jam
To make the jam, take a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, add the jam sugar, citrus zest and lemon juice. Add the raspberries. Give it a gentle toss rather than stir so as not to break up the raspberries. Gently bring to the boil. Watch over it and make sure the sugar dissolves before it starts to boil. Stir occasionally to ensure the jam doesn’t stick to the bottom. Once the jam boils, boil rapidly for four to five minutes, stirring occasionally. The temperature should be 104°C. Take the pan off the heat. Pour the jam into a bowl. Stir gently every now and then as it cools. This will help distribute the fruit evenly. Spoon the jam into sterilised jars just before it has set. Fill them right up to the top. Cover first with clingfilm, which should touch the surface of the jam, then with the lids. Leave to cool. Store in the fridge or a cool place. To make the ice cream, take a shallow plastic or earthenware container. Add the yoghurt. Whisk in two-thirds of the jam. Put it in the freezer for six hours and vigorously stir every 30 minutes. After about three hours, take it out of the freezer and fold in the rest of the jam, combining the two just enough to make streaks through the mixture. Freeze for a further two to three hours before serving. If you have an ice cream machine, just pour the original mixture into it and churn. Once it is ready, add the final third of the raspberry jam and churn once or twice until it becomes streaky. Serve on frozen plates or in frozen glasses.

The simplest way is to expand your range of seasonings, instead of always reaching for salt and pepper, try smoked paprika, ras-el-hanout, piment d’espelette or Chinese five spice. What corners should we never cut? Never serve food without tasting it. The difference between a nice dish and a delicious one can be a touch of seasoning. Taste, season and taste again. What’s your favourite thing to cook for a quick weeknight supper? Crab and red curry giant couscousotto I make this with wholewheat giant couscous, ready picked crab, curry paste from my fridge and peas from my freezer. Ready in 20 minutes and tastes incredible. Most memorable meal you’ve ever had? The most beautiful plate of vegetable crudités with pistou in Provence, a roast spiny lobster in Sydney and lemon curd puddings made by my sons. What are you cooking that’s in season right now? Tomatoes, I grow 12 different varieties and we eat them with every meal. In salads, stuffed and baked, in omelettes, grilled with lemon butter, melted into olive oil sauces, in compote, in tarts and so much more. What is your guilty food pleasure? Cheese, I love all cheese, from Roquefort to cheddar but the one that makes me feel guilty is the bizarrely irresistible plastic cheese on burgers. So Michael Caines’ new country-house hotel is a breath of fresh air above all that hot gas. His quietly confident style of cooking doesn’t need any jiggery-pokery to make it spectacular. He knows that ginger and lemongrass will make langoustine cannelloni zing and how to make a simple red wine sauce induce biblical salivation. These are wily tricks that only those with a career as esteemed as Caines’ can pull off. Having held two Michelin stars at Gidleigh Park for 18 years, he has returned to home turf on the Exe Estuary, which is reflected in everything from the art works by local artists (and available to buy) to the optional ‘Taste of the Estuary’ menu promoting local seafood. It’s glaringly obvious when a restaurant is a passion project not a money spinner, and it’s clear Vineet Bhatia has poured his soul into these four walls – from the heartfelt essay tucked into the menu to the abstract serveware in the intimate 32-cover, no-expenses-spared dining room. Though he has a handful of restaurants already, this is the first time his creative talent has been unfettered by financial backers or dated ideas about Indian cuisine. If you can’t be doing with tasting menus, this isn’t for you – that’s the only thing on offer. But the culinary open-minded would be foolish not to let this spice master guide them through the flavours he grew up with – like slowcooked lamb dressed with northern Indian spices, served on a southernstyle uttapam. BUY: Homes on Crag Path, overlooking the beach, are brightly coloured but go inland a street or two for a real mix – Victorian, post-war and quite a few architect-designed contemporary homes too. Put bluntly, this place is heavenly. It’s a genuinely quiet fishing port in winter but come spring and summer it expands from 9,000 locals to nearly 30,000 drawn by the close proximity of Rock – perfect for sailing – and a flurry of top class restaurants, including Rick Stein’s empire and Paul Ainsworth at Number Six. BUY: Blingy modern homes sit across the Camel at Rock, however most buyers prefer small but premium-priced Victorian cottages on the hilly streets of Padstow itself. This gem of a town on the River Dart dates back to the 11th century and has 5,000 lucky residents, most living on a patchwork of streets – none of them far from the water. BUY: Nearby villages are dominated by holiday homes but most Dartmouth houses – a mix of old terraces, grand Victorian villas and more contemporary designs – are owner occupied. hat’s on trend with kitchens right now? Earthy reclaimed wood? Throwing a range into an otherwise urban layout? Spicing up a classic Shaker with some Sub-Zero equipment? Whatever you do, bear in mind that the kitchen is a key moodsetter for buyers when you come to sell your home – get this room right and the deal becomes a lot easier. TV property expert Phil Spencer says a top-notch kitchen could add four to five per cent to the value of a home so long as it’s appropriate – in other words, he cautions, don’t spend £50,000 on a kitchen for a £300,000 home. But don’t stint if your property is higher priced. Likewise, use quality recognisable brands for major kitchen furniture and one-off features like coffee machines, to create a ‘quality’ impression that will benefit the whole property. ‘The kitchen should be the showpiece. A modern, clean and tidy kitchen with up-to-date appliances creates a good impression for the rest of the house – the prospective buyer makes the assumption that

the whole house is going to be the same,’ explains John Harvey of Lida Cucina, a kitchen design and installation company. ‘Nowadays it’s one of the main entertaining areas for informal dining and dinner parties. It is one of the family areas for relaxing in front of the TV or supervising homework,’ he adds. Harvey says an eye-catching kitchen helps sale-appeal – few buyers, especially with families, want the hassle of fitting a new one shortly after moving in – and plays into our home cooking and healthy eating zeitgeist. The boiler tap, wine vault and steam oven owe their increasing popularity to homeowners wanting more than a traditional kitchen. ‘Ironically, if a home is £5m-plus, a kitchen counts for less than in less expensive homes. That’s because the buyer will probably refurbish from top to bottom. Below that figure, however, a kitchen is absolutely central for establishing the mood a would-be buyer picks up,’ says London and Home Counties buying agent Roger Thompson. A recently renovated, seven-bedroom coach house at Pinxton in Nottinghamshire (£1m. humberts.com) has been given an appropriately dramatic new kitchen with an Aga, wine fridge and large island perfect for entertaining. In Northamptonshire an extension to the Old Stone House (£785,000. jackson-stops.co.uk) incorporates features salvaged from the previous property on the site – including a beautiful kitchen/breakfast room, perfectly attuned to the rest of the property. And if all that’s not enough, the trend is now extending to two kitchens. One-time wannabe prime minister Ed Miliband posed in both his kitchens during the 2015 general election while the Duchess of Cambridge made sure there were two installed in the refurbished Kensington Palace. Now Berkeley Homes has slotted two into some of its larger apartments at One Tower Bridge and Goodmans Fields schemes in central London. So the kitchen is key – especially if you want to cook up a storm when selling.
