CANNON BEACH

YEAR IN REVIEW WILL CHAPPELL Gazette Editor

A

s 2024 begins, the Gazette wanted to take the opportunity to look back at the year of events in Cannon Beach in 2023.

Starting out with Earth and Memorial Day celebrations in the spring and stretching to the Stormy Weather Arts Festival and holiday activities in recent months, it has been a busy year in

Cannon Beach. Big stories also came from city hall, where financing and design decisions were made on three major projects that are set to begin construction this year.

After state code updates in late 2022, the longawaited new city hall and police station project was divided across two sites at the south end of the city and at the current city hall’s location on Gower Street.

The combined projects will have a budget of $25 million with city council approving an increase to the transient lodging tax rate of 1.5%. The Cannon Beach Elementary School

rejuvenation project also progressed, receiving design approval from the city council in December, but concerns over its $12-million budget have permeated the community.

The 29th Annual Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest took over the beach on a Saturday in June, drawing large crowds to see the intricate constructions.
