Second Wave of Oregon Firefighters Headed to California

Oregon is sending another wave of firefighters and water tenders to assist in battling the devastating fires raging across Southern California.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) announced Saturday, January 11th that six additional strike teams, comprising thirty water tenders and seventy firefighters, will be deployed to aid in the firefighting efforts in California.

The teams, hailing from Clackamas, Columbia, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Morrow, Multnomah and Umatilla counties, will join the fifteen strike teams that arrived earlier in the week. Southern California is bracing for continued extreme fire weather provoking dangerous conditions in the coming days.

"We understand the severity of this crisis and are leveraging the strength of the Oregon Fire Mutual Aid System to provide our neighbors with crucial support in combating the wildfires and safeguarding lives and property," said State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple.

The significant deployment includes some of Oregon's newest tactical tenders, recently acquired by local fire agencies through the OSFM Engine Program.

In total, Oregon has mobilized a substantial force to aid California, to include: twenty-one strike teams; seventy-five fire engines; thirty water tenders and three-hundred seventy firefighters.

The deployment was authorized under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which allows states to provide mutual aid during emergencies. The costs associated with the Oregon crews will be reimbursed by the State of California.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center website, the United States Forest Service has activated eight Department of Defense C-130 aircraft equipped with modular airborne firefighting systems (MAFFS) to assist with fire response. The eight aircraft join other municipal, county, state and federal agencies fighting wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area.

As of this printing, three major fires are consuming the Los Angeles area: The Palisade fire, which is near the city Malibu and Highway 101; the Eaton fire, which is near the southern basin of the Angeles National Forest and the Hurst fire, which is located north of the city of Los Angeles along the I-5 corridor.

As of January 12th, the Palisades Fire is eleven percent con-

tained with 23,713 acres burned. The Eaton fire is twenty-seven percent contained with 14,117 acres burned and the Hurst fire is eighty-nine percent contained with 799 acres burned. The fires are still under investigation and no current official

cause has been released to the public. It should be noted not to rely on social media posts for accurate information regarding the fires and the general public should seek information at official government websites to get

complete information.

George Eldon Miller

George Eldon Miller, 87, of Gold Beach, Oregon, passed away on January 13, 2025, leaving behind a life defined by curiosity, adventure, loyalty to his family, and a deep connection to nature. George was born in Myrtle Point, Oregon, on January 26, 1937, as the youngest of three children of Edith and Eldon Miller. Raised on the Oregon coast primarily in Ophir, George grew up nurturing the hobbies that became lifelong passions—hunting, fishing, and exploring the great outdoors. These early experiences shaped his love for nature and remained central to his life.

After graduating from Myrtle Point High School, George attended Pacific University, where he played basketball and cultivated his interest in education. He began his career teaching in Eastern Oregon before joining the Navy and then went on to serve with distinction in Naval Intelligence for 30 years. In 1966, George met the love of his life, Karin Hitzhuber, in Reykjavik, Iceland, and they married in 1968. Together they raised two daughters, Kirsten and Kelly, in Accokeek, Mary-

land. After retiring in 1992, George fulfilled his lifelong dream of returning to the Oregon coast, where he and Karin built a home on his family's land in Ophir.

George’s retirement was as vibrant as his career. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved golf, hunting, and fishing. His passion for woodworking resulted in beautifully crafted furniture, and his adventurous spirit led him to scout forests for extraordinary trees. One of his proudest discoveries was the largest tanoak, which is listed in the national registry of big trees.

George is survived by his wife Karin; daughters, Kirsten and Kelly; grandchildren Madison, Paul, and Talan; his niece Janet; nephews Tom, Tim, Brett, and Denny; and many great-nephews and nieces. His love for family and exploration will be cherished by all who knew him. In keeping with George’s wishes, no services will be held. His ashes will be spread along with Karin's at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter in his memory.

Chasing Zebras:

Finding a Rare Diagnosis Against the Odds

For 10 years, Abbey Hope lived with debilitating abdominal pain. It was a medical mystery that sent her on a frustrating odyssey through the healthcare system. Doctors, armed with the adage "when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras," struggled to pinpoint the cause of her suffering.

Hope's journey began in December of 2014, during a seemingly uneventful trip to Portland, Oregon. While celebrating a successful pole vault competition, she experienced sudden, intense abdominal pain. Initially dismissed as a minor issue, the pain returned sporadically and escalated into a chronic torment that plagued her daily life.

Over the next seven years, Hope endured a barrage of tests and diagnoses: Lyme disease, mast cell activation syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, even complex regional pain syndrome, all potential explanations for her suffering, but none that truly addressed the core issue.

"I felt like I was chasing my tail," Hope recalled. "Every new diagnosis offered a glimmer of hope, only to be dashed when treatments proved ineffective." The constant pain, both physical and emotional, took a heavy toll.

"At 25, I was preparing to live the rest of my life in excruciating agony," she confessed.

Desperate for answers, Hope embarked on a longshot investigation. Despite a previous negative test, she pursued a diagnosis of Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome (MALS), a rare condition affecting only 2 in 200,000 people.

MALS occurs when a ligament in the abdomen compresses a major artery, restricting blood flow to vital organs. This compression also impacts nearby nerves, causing severe pain and a cascade of debilitating symptoms.

"It was like finding a needle in a haystack," Hope explained. "But I knew I had to try."

Finally, after years of searching, the diagnosis arrived. Hope underwent surgery to alleviate the pressure on the artery, but the relief was short-lived. The pain persisted, a testament to the complex nature of MALS and the challenges faced by patients with rare diseases.

"Many patients require multiple surgeries," Hope explained. "It's a long and arduous journey, filled with uncertainty and setbacks."

Living with MALS presents a unique set of challenges. The constant pain disrupts daily life, impacting everything from eating to sleeping. Hope described the pain as "a

blowtorch burning from the inside out," accompanied by stabbing sensations that can last for hours.

"I've been in pain for so long that I don't even remember what it feels like to be pain-free," she admitted.

Hope's story highlights the frustrations faced by patients with rare diseases. The medical community often prioritizes common conditions, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment.

"Doctors often feel pressured to find quick and easy answers," Hope explained. "But when you're dealing with a rare disease, it requires patience, persistence and a willingness to explore unconventional avenues."

Hope emphasized the importance of patient advocacy. "Don't give up," she urged. "If you suspect MALS, insist on the necessary tests: an abdominal Doppler ultrasound and a CT-angiogram. These tests are crucial for accurate diagnosis."

Hope also stressed the importance of support networks. "Connecting with other patients who understand your struggles can be invaluable," she said. "Sharing experiences and offering support can make a significant difference in coping with this challenging condition."

Despite the ongoing challenges, Hope remains

hopeful. "Living with MALS is a constant negotiation," she explained. "It's about finding ways to manage the pain, maintain a sense of normalcy and appreciate the small joys

in life." Hope's journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, advocacy and the human spirit's incredible capacity for resilience. As

she continues to navigate the complexities of living with a rare disease, she hopes her story will inspire others facing similar challenges.

Friends of Curry Campus Speaker Series Presents: Greenhouse and Garden

Brookings, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College Curry Campus invites the community to join us on Thursday, February 13, 2025, 12:00 to 1:00 pm for: Greenhouse and Garden.

This is a free program sponsored by the Friends of Curry Campus and will be held in the Community Room on Southwestern’s Curry Campus, 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway (off Highway 101), Brookings. Bring a friend and a brown bag lunch.

Are you wondering what to be doing in the garden this month and next month? Do you know about the Greenhouse Project in Curry County? Would you like to know more about what the Curry County Master Gardeners offer the public?

Julia Bott is happy to answer these questions.

Julia is an Oregon State University (OSU) Curry County Master Gardener –a volunteer since 2018.

As a community volunteer Julia and other Master Gardeners help people with their sustainable gardening activities such as running the plant clinic, educational presentations, and school gardens. Currently she is one of numerous volunteers leading garden classes for 2nd and 4th graders at Kalmiopsis Elementary School in Brookings. Overall, OSU Curry County Master Gardener

volunteers provide locally relevant scientific information for gardening in our area.

Julia first became interested in gardening in college and had a job working in the organic garden to supply the college dorms. Gardening was new to Julia. She grew up in an area with no greenspace nor gardens.

Julia said “As a teenager I remember asking someone who did have a garden how deep their dirt

went because I was only familiar with built environments with concrete and asphalt. Not all learning occurs in the classroom! That part time job in college changed my life. It may be why I’m so into school garden programs.”

There are two things that guide Julia. “First, I always remind myself I am a gardener, not a farmer. It's all about scale. Secondly, it doesn't have to look pretty to taste great. I grow and eat a lot of vegetables

Curry County Board of Commissioners Discuss Increased Transient Tax and Community Outreach

The Curry County Board of Commissioners (BOC) discussed several key issues at the January 9th meeting, including a potential increase in the Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) and plans for greater community engagement.

The commissioners expressed a strong desire to increase transparency and accessibility for county residents by traveling to neighboring cities like Port Orford and Brookings for town hall meetings as a way to bring the county government directly to the people.

"I'm happy that we're all in agreement to do more town halls and workshops to incorporate our constituents into discussions," said Commissioner Jay Trost. "I would like to discuss a town hall to address our Federal Land Management Stewardship Program and other important issues."

The meeting schedule for the year was accepted and the BOC also agreed to a slight adjustment to their

regular meeting schedule, moving one monthly meeting from Thursdays to Tuesdays.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on increasing the TLT from the current seven percent to ten percent. This increase, which has already been approved by voters, is expected to generate an additional $700,000 annually.

"We can go up to ten percent," said Trost. "The voters have already approved it and all of our neighboring counties are essentially at ten percent."

Trost emphasized that the increased revenue would primarily benefit tourism and economic development within the county.

"These are dollars coming in from tourists staying at our hotels and vacation rentals," said Trost. "The three largest contributors are the Beach Front Inn, Vacation Rentals By Owner (VRBO) and Airbnb."

While seventy percent of the TLT revenue is already earmarked for tourism promotion, the

remaining thirty percent would be allocated to the general fund.

"Overall, we'd be increasing our Transient Lodging Tax (TLT) fund by just over $700,000,” said Trost. “This would add $210,000 to the general fund, which could be used to help bolster our economic tourism and development."

The BOC will hold a workshop in the near future to further discuss the TLT increase and gather public input.

In other news, Curry County will partner with Welcome Home Oregon (WHO) to assist re-entering individuals make a better start in life after being incarcerated.

Curry County has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with WHO, a non-profit organization, to provide re-entry services to individuals released from the Oregon Department of Corrections.

WHO has received a $300,000 grant to support this partnership, which will

offer crucial assistance to individuals transitioning back into the community.

The services may include a peer support system with guidance and mentorship from individuals with lived experience.

It would offer housing assistance and support in finding stable housing, including the potential for housing units specifically for re-entering individuals.

Employment Assistance would also be offered to help people with job searches, resume building, and support in obtaining necessary documents like IDs and Social Security cards.

The program would also help individuals with essential needs like providing clothing, hygiene items and other basic necessities.

Under the terms of the MOU, Curry County will be responsible for referring eligible individuals to the program after a risk assessments and other appropriate criteria have been met.

It will also provide support by offering access to county resources, including potential housing units and assistance with transportation.

The county will also collaborate and work closely with WHO staff on case management and release planning information.

WHO, in turn, will conduct pre-release assessments by connecting with individuals prior to their release to assess their needs and develop personalized support plans.

It will also provide direct services that offer peer support, housing assistance and other services as outlined in their Direct Client Services Policy. Mostly, they will build community partnerships by engaging with local businesses and organizations to create employment opportunities for re-entering individuals. Lastly, they will track

and report on program outcomes by monitoring the progress of individuals receiving services and submit regular reports on program effectiveness. This partnership aims to reduce recidivism rates and improve the successful reintegration of individuals returning to the community after incarceration. By providing comprehensive support and addressing the unique challenges faced by re-entering individuals, this initiative seeks to enhance public safety and improve the overall well-being of community members.
