Why Heart of CARTM is Still a Local Gem

Our amazing volunteers, lovingly curate each section of the store, ensuring every item finds a new home and purpose. This is Meredith in the craft tools section.

CARTM, the organization that operated the Manzanita Transfer Station for over 20 years, no longer runs a store at that hub of recycling and waste stream diversion. But, did you know that the same organization operates a creative reuse store in Wheeler?

Under their new name, Heart of CARTM, their mission is to facilitate the reuse, repair and reimagination of our region’s discards and every dollar you spend in the store supports this critical community work.

Their store, located at 395 Hwy 101 in Wheeler, is where you will find a unique blend of items all rescued from a trip to the landfill! Antiques, wall art, tools, furniture, fabric, and much more, fill 3 rooms

of an historic building downtown. Shoppers can browse book shelves made of reclaimed desk drawers, play with dismantled piano pieces, and discuss their own creative projects with store staff. The interactive spirit of the store is partly what makes it so unique. “I like to show shoppers around the store,” says Levering Thomas, a store volunteer and Nehalem artist. “Helping customers to discover new things is fun. Whether you call yourself an artist or not, I listen to you and point out special items that I think you would find inspiring.”

Once Heart of CARTM has taken in an item, they will do everything they can to ensure it stays out of the landfill. “We love and care for every item in our shop, Kim Koch, the

organization’s donation specialist explains. “We clean, repair and sometimes dismantle items in order to create the highest value of reuse and to deliver the best treasures to our customers.”

Visit Heart of CARTM this holiday season to find unique gifts, treasured keepsakes, and one-of-akind curiosities. You can feel good knowing that every purchase supports sustainable, material management work, right here in Tillamook County. Want to learn more about donating beloved-but-unwanted items? Call 971-389-8414 or visit. The store is open to all Thursdays through Mondays, Noon to 6 p.m. Donations are accepted Thursdays and Fridays. Thanks for shopping local!

Coaster Theatre is having a White Christmas

126 S Hwy 101, (the old US Bank building), downtown Rockaway Beach 503-355-3333

It’s that time of year again, with temperatures beginning to drop and the staple gray skies of the coast settling in for the months to come. But this holiday season, Coaster Theatre will ensure that Christmas is merry and bright, with their production of “White Christmas.”

A holiday tradition for many, “White Christmas” is the Yuletide tale of two WWII veteran performers, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, whose paths cross with a duo of performing sisters, Betty and Judy. The four decide to spend Christmas performing in Vermont where Bob and Phil run into their old army commander who owns an inn. Learning that his finances are in a dire state, the quartet devises a plan to save the inn by assembling their show business connections and putting on a variety show to draw tourists to the inn.

With no snowfall in Vermont at first, the sparks fly between the veteran performers and the sisters, but will their plan to save the inn work? Will true love win out? And will everyone have a white Christmas?

“It’s such a classic, nostalgia, Irving Berlin music—can’t go wrong with that,” said Coaster Theatre executive director Patrick Lathrop.

“White Christmas” features songs like the holiday classic “White Christmas” and “Sisters,” a fun tune of sororal affection and competition.

The last time the theatre performed “White Christmas” was eleven years ago. For many people, watching the 1954 film “White Christmas,” starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and VeraEllen Dean Jagger, is a holiday tradition.

“White Christmas” performances will begin on November 22 and continue until

December 22. Performances between Tuesday and Saturday will be at 7:30 p.m., and performances on Sundays will be at 3 p.m. Ticket prices range from $30 to $35, and they’re selling out fast.

In addition to the classic Christmas musical, the theatre will present a special featuring the music of Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand called Happy Days Are Here Again. “Our particular audience, I think they’re just right in the right age range and the right place to appreciate that and enjoy it,” said Lathrop. Happy Days Are Here Again will be on December 6.

On December 15 at 3 p.m., the Astoria Tuba Quartet will be performing at the theatre. The quartet was formed in the 1970s by the group’s leader Dennis Hale. The tuba isn’t an instrument that often gets much attention, usually being overlooked by more common instruments like the flute or saxophone, but the power and even softness a tuba can evoke will surprise audiences. Jazz, ballads and even Latin music are just some styles the quartet can perform.

“I saw them about a year ago, and was so impressed,” Lathrop said. “They’re absolutely wonderful. You wouldn’t think four tubas would be that exciting, but they are. They’re just great.”

Though winter is a calmer season on the coast, plenty will still be going on at Coaster Theatre. Even if there is no snow in Cannon Beach this holiday season, there can still be a white Christmas. And if anyone is interested in being involved with Coaster Theatre, auditions for February’s murdermystery play “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt” will be held next month. Information on auditions can be found on the theatre’s website.

For ticket purchases or further inquiries into performances, visit Coaster Theatre’s website, coastertheatre.com, or call 503-436-1242.

Communities benefit when consumers shop local

Ideas about shopping are never set in stone, and the pandemic illustrated just how quickly consumer trends and opinions can change. Many individuals are now reevaluating how they spend their hard-earned money, particularly since inflation has affected just how far a dollar can be stretched. When consumers think about which stores to patronize, locally owned businesses may be the

smartest option for a number of reasons — not the least of which is the way such enterprises benefit the communities they call home.

More money kept in the community

to recent research from Civic Economics, local eateries return nearly 79 percent of revenue to the community, compared to just over 30 percent for chain restaurants. Overall, for every $100 spent at a local business, around $73 remains in the community, versus roughly $43 when shopping at a non-locally owned business.

Get a personal touch

Local business owners typically are inclined to go the extra mile for their customers and are personally invested in the services and products they are selling. As a result, shopping locally tends to be a personalized experience. Furthermore, a local business owner may be more amenable to ordering products for specific clientele. Such personalized service is typically not accessible when shopping big box stores or other shops where owners are off-site.

Generates tax revenue

Local businesses generate more tax revenue per sales dollar, according to Rubicon, a digital marketplace for waste and recycling businesses. Taxes paid by local small businesses go to support schools, parks, roads, and other programs that benefit the community as well.

Support other local businesses

Local business support other local businesses by buying and selling among each other. A local, independently owned restaurant may source its ingredients from local farms, which means visitors to such eateries are supporting multiple local businesses each time they dine out.
