e holidays are better in Cannon Beach The holidays are here again and Cannon Beach is the place to celebrate it. The traditional village feel of Cannon Beach makes it the best place in the world for a holiday, and its traditions will appeal to young and old. Events like the Cannon Beach Library’s Holiday Tea complete with library volunteers in Dickensian dress and the lamp lighting give the holidays here an old-world feel. Likewise, the Cannon Beach in lights competition will bring back the

nostalgia of Christmas past and the memory of driving around to look at the holiday lights.

NewchangestoCannonBeachinLights Remember the magic of piling into the family car to drive around looking at Christmas lights while sipping steaming mugs of hot chocolate? Well the Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Cannon Beach in Lights contest will allow both young and old the chance to recapture the spirit of the holidays with their loved ones. Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce Holiday Decorating Contest is also a great way to show off our community pride and light up this special season. Registration for the event is still open and the public will have a new way to participate in the event this year – voting to decide who deserves to win the Holiday in Lights competition. The contest, which will include both businesses and residents, will allow the public to judge who has the best holiday decorations. While lights will be a prime feature of the

contest decorations can also include Santas, sleds, reindeer, wreaths and much more! Unlike past years, there will be only one award given, so the winner will receive bragging rights for the year, as well as a plaque commemorating the award. In past years there were multiple awards and the winners were decided by a panel of judges, so voting on the winners gives people a new way to participate. Registration for the event ended on November 2, but

voting will last from December 1 to December 19 at 5 p.m. The winner will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 22, during intermission of the play “A Christmas Carol” at Coaster Theatre and proclaimed throughout town on Sunday, Dec. 23. Public will vote via Facebook (facebook.com/Haystack HolidaysCannonBeach) or paper ballot. Ballot and maps will be available at Cannon Beach Chamber, 207 N Spruce starting Dec. 1.

Mimosa Madness: the perfect alternative to Black Friday Elsewhere in the country, people will be shaking themselves out of their postturkey comas at an unnaturally early hour to leave their warm houses to wait in long lines in the freezing cold, and fight hordes of angry shoppers to get a bargain. In Cannon Beach, the early deals start at a lazy 8 a.m. – giving shoppers time to wake up, enjoy breakfast and their morning coffee before beginning their holiday shopping. The event is called Mimosa Madness, but it is the furthest thing in the world from the madness of the typical Black Friday shopping frenzy. Instead of fighting a crowd and dealing with surly check out clerks, shoppers will be greeted with refreshments, like the events titular mimosa. Some shops will be serving non-alcoholic alter-

natives to mimosas, and others will have pastries and other snacks to make the shopping experience superior. The aggressive pleasantness of the shopping experience aside, stores are also planning big bargains for shoppers. To find out more about who is offering bargains, like Mimosa Madness on Facebook at: facebook.com/mimosamadness.

“We haven’t let ourselves think we’re close to being done, said Darren Hull on November 9, while he and his brother were still finishing cleaning out their old location. There’s still much work to be done at the store and in their storage area, but Darren said having both new locations open is a relief and exciting. “We had a fantastic opening weekend over Stormy Weather (Arts Festival), he said. He said they are now gearing up for the day after Thanksgiving, which is typically their biggest day of the year. They will be participating in Mimosa Madness (to read more about Mimosa Madness check out page 5 of this insert).

The brothers said Richard Bowman and Jenni Lyn Tronier-Hull were huge helps during the move. Ryan said Tronier-Hull does marketing things that neither he nor his brother could. Bowman also put in a heroic effort to get the store moved, and even worked until 3 a.m. the night before they opened to make sure everything was ready. Bowman, who said the Hulls had to force him to go home the night before they opened, said his efforts were “well worth it because they now have more space and can have a larger selection. Bowman said he’s happy to be back on a normal sleep schedule now that the store is The new store has much more floor space than the old location. open. “Things worth having are Bowman that the effort they Darren Hull agrees with all put in was worth it. worth working for, he said.

LibrarycelebratesholidayswithtraditionalEnglishTea Nutcracker production set for Dec. 1-2 Following a tradion that was started in the 1970s, the Cannon Beach Library will be hosting an English Holiday Tea. The tea was started as a way to get visitors to Cannon Beach, during the gas crises of the 1970s. The tradition was revived in 2003 by volunteer Marlene Laws, who had the idea to bring the tea back as a thank you to the community for their continued support of the library. It has since become a holiday tradition. The teas were first held at the Bell Harbor Motel and later at the Chamber. The community is cordially invited to the annual Holiday Tea on Saturday, Dec. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. The organizers changed their hours so that everyone could enjoy the lamp lighting that is held across the street at Sandpiper Square at 4 p.m. There will be many cookies and other holiday treats

that are baked by our volunteers. Cider and tea will be flowing. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing residents and visitors alike. Library staff and volunteers will dress in Dickensian costume for the event, and tea, cider and an assortment of homemade goodies to in-

clude cookies, tarts, bread and muffins, will be served. Tea party attendees will get a chance to visit with neighbors and enjoy delicious foods. The event precedes the first official lamp lighting of the season. Up to 200 people have attended in previous years.

North Coast audiences will once again be treated to the traditional holiday classic ballet, The Nutcracker, staged in the Astoria High SchoolAuditorium, by Little Ballet Theatre on Dec. 1-2. The full -scale production, returns for the 38th year, with 75 dancers, a 55 member orchestra, and choir. The captivating music score by Peter Iylich Tchaikovsky, will be conducted by Cory Pederson, and enhanced by the appearance of guest artists of the Ballet Idaho. The tickets for the production are available at the Old Town Framing inAstoria, The Wine Haus in Seaside, and the Peninsula Pharmacy in Long Beach. $15 for adults, children 12 and under, and senior citizens are $10. Reserved seating starts at $30 to $50. Little Ballet Theatre is a 501C3 corporation, and is listed by the Oregon Cultural Trust. The performance times are Saturday Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. The two matinees will feature a candy cane party on stage for children in the audience, hosted by the Dancing Bear. The evening performance includes an after-party in the school commons for the audience to meet the guest artists, and the conductor. Any further information

This year, she has selected Stephen Snyder and Emma Brown to help the city begin the holiday season. The ceremony will be at 4 p.m. on December 1, and homemade treats and refreshments will be served at the ceremony. Carols are usually sung at the ceremony, including Bill Steidel’s Christmas Song, which he wrote for the Dueber family after they suddenly lost their father on Christmas Day in 1967.
