An early-winter cold snap gripped the area for the better part of a week and didn’t let go until Tuesday of this week. Temperatures dipped into the 20s going into the weekend, with many areas reporting overnight temperature in the teens Saturday and Sunday morning. Friday morning, area residents were greeted with upwards of an inch of snow on the ground. Fortunately, the bulk of the snow fell to the south in Lincoln County as predicted. However, the snow and cold led to the cancellation of school for students of the Neah-Kah-Nie School District. Icy, slick roads were blamed for a head-on collision on McDonald Road on Friday morning, near Nehalem. One person was reportedly taken by ambulance to an area hospital. Volunteer firefighters of the Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue District were busier than usual, responding to two house fires locally this past week and providing backup for neighboring fire districts responding to fires. In Tillamook, an emergency warming center was open for several nights to provide a safe and warm place for people during the freezing temperatures. A weather front finally brought rain and warmer temperatures to the area Tuesday

The fountain outside Manzanita News and Espresso in Manzanita served as a reminder these past few days just how cold it was on the north Oregon coast. Temperatures dipped into the teens and low 20s over the weekend, following a dusting of snow that led to school closures on Friday, Dec. 6. By midweek, temperatures began to moderate. To the delight of young and old alike, the tree lighting ceremony in downtown Manzanita officially kicked off the holiday season in the small coastal community on Friday evening, the day after Thanksgiving. A crowd estimated of upwards of 300 or more gathered at the corner of Third St. and Laneda Ave. patiently waiting for 6 p.m. to arrive for the tree lighting. A three-hour Kids Holiday Fun Fair that began at 5:00 kept children and parents busy next door at Pine Grove Community

Fire district looks to prohibit provisional burns The Citizen
For years, contactors and developers, in particular, haven’t had to worry about burning brush, stumps and trees leftover from clearing property destined for development. However, as the Nehalem Bay area has continued to grow, so NBFR District Chief Perry Sherbaugh says growth has brought the issue of provisional burning to a head. Photo by Dave Fisher
have complaints by area residents about the practice of burning large piles of woody debris. “The issue has been where there has been the burning of removed stumps and trees in the middle of a neighborhood,” said Nehalem Bay Fire and Rescue District Chief Perry Sherbaugh. “The large piles can burn for two or three days and people often complain about getting ‘smoked out.’”

With the recent acquisition of a used (but hardly used) generator, the Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay, in partnership with the American Red Cross, continues to fine-tune its shelter strategy in the three communities of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler. The donated diesel generator, with only 230 hours of actual use, will be installed next to Calvary Bible Church in Manzanita, one of three designated Red Cross emergency shelters locally. The others are the North County Recreation District in Nehalem and Nehalem Bay Health District in Wheeler, each with their own generator. Eric Corliss, chief operations officer for the Red Cross, was instrumental in helping the EVC secure the generator for Calvary Bible Church, according to EVC Emergency Management Director Linda Kozlowski. When a Portland area veterinarian, who originally owned the generator, reached out to the Red Cross for a new home for it, Corliss was well aware of the need in Manzanita. Following an inspection of the unit by EVC members John Handler and John Olson, who also serves as associate pastor for Calvary Bible, it was delivered to the Manzanita church thanks

Probably due to the cold, shopping was lighter than usual. So, market organizers are giving the community an opportunity to shop virtually. Shopping lists for international organizations that help people around the world and for the local nonprofits that were at the market yesterday are available. If you wish to donate to
