Arriving in three modular sections last week, Nehalem’s new city hall is coming together, literally. Once work crews secured the three pre-manufactured sections to its foundation, they began addressing the siding and roof. If everything goes according to plan, the new facility, located next door to the present city hall and former fire

hall, will be completed by the end of September and the City of Nehalem will move in shortly afterwards. To view the plans of the new building, visit www.ci.nehalem. or.us/ and click on “New City Hall” on the left-hand side of the home page. Photos by Dave Fisher

Wheeler city manager leaving By Joe Wrabek For the Citizen

Wheeler’s city manager, Jeff Aprati, is leaving. “There’s nothing wrong,” said Aprati, noting that he and his wife are expecting their first child, and wanted to move back to Portland to be closer to relatives. “I’ll probably be here through the end of September.” Aprati had been Wheeler’s city manager since May 2012. It was his first city manager job. “Wheeler is a great small town and a great place to work,” Aprati said. “It’s definitely a town with great volunteers. A lot of what we do here couldn’t happen without the volunteer help.” Jennie Messmer from the League of Oregon Cities has been tapped to serve as interim city manager while the city looks for a replacement, Aprati said. The job has been advertised on the League’s Website since Aug. 13. “We’ve already received 20 applications,” he said. Interviews are expected in October. The new manager will be dealing with a water master plan update, an update of the city’s comprehensive plan – and

year to buy the property. “If it’s still available next year, the city will prob-

ably try again,” Aprati said. “There’s certainly still interest.”

Annual Labor Day Picnic signals end of summer

Gray skies and a light morning drizzle threatened to put a damper on the annual Labor Day picnic sponsored by Manzanita Grocery & Deli, but by noon all was well as people started lining up outside Pine Grove Community House. With live entertainment provided by the Sedona Fire band and Road Grill BBQ flipping the burgers and hot dogs, the end-of-summer event, as usual, was enjoyed by all. Proceeds from the event help support the North County Food Bank. Photos by Dave Fisher.
