Nonprofits, Newspapers, and the Bird’s-Eye-View have a county paper of record, The Chronicle, as well as The Chief and Vernonia’s Voice and the Spotlight, staffed by professionals who have local knowledge and care about our home.

When nonprofits choose to advertise in their local newspapers, they are not only helping those papers remain viable but are also providing a lasting

record of their own activities.

Posts on the internet can be effective, but the content is ephemeral. Get something in the paper, and the content will be preserved (to the delight of historians!)

My involvement in nonprofits and service organizations began just a few months after my husband Brian and I moved from Los Angeles to Columbia County in 2015.

It all started with invitations from Joe Lewis and Darrel Whipple to join the Columbia County Coalition for Human Dignity and the Columbia County Cultural Coalition.

From there, I was asked to join the boards of the Columbia Chorale of Oregon, the ShoeString Players, the Kiwanis Club of St. Helens, and so many steering committees and smaller organizations that I’ve frankly lost count. After the relative anonymity of Los Angeles, I had my heart’s desire: to be imbedded in the

These workshops have provided bird’s-eye-view of our nonprofits and how they serve wider needs: feeding families, providing legal aid to minors, getting people with disabilities on horseback, among scores of other creative ways to serve people. It’s useful to see how nonprofits relate to one another, playing complementary roles. There is a synergy that develops as your knowledge of our local nonprofits increases; you start to make connections that tie need to resource, and talent to opportunity. And that’s where this nonprofit edition comes in because it, too, offers that bird’s-eye-view.

Publicity has often been my function on boards and committees, and I’ve had the privilege of dealing with the staff of various local papers.

Serving on the board of the Columbia County Cultural Coalition (CCCC) has provided insight into local nonprofits. Kannikar Petersen heads a talented board, the mission of which is to foster the arts, culture, and history of our county through providing funds to projects sponsored by 501 (c) (3) nonprofits.

The projects are varied: from murals to writing festivals, from summer movies to updating archives. Reviewing grant applications, making cultural inventories and the like, I’ve seen how rich our county is in creative talent.

The CCCC has twice sponsored Grant Writing workshops which bring in representatives from a cross-section of county organizations.

Chamber of Commerce welcomes a new board member JAK MASSEY Guest Article

Meet Mark Pacheco, the newest member of our Chamber’s Board of Directors team.

Mark is the Public Information Officer for Columbia County.

The skills, experience, and knowledge he brings to the table will be extremely valuable for our Chamber Board and its members.

An Arizona native, Mark’s

wife Sonja spent years telling him that she was destined to reside in the Pacific Northwest.

Every mention of Oregon in a television show or movie, or any sighting of an Oregon license plate, was another “sign” that she was meant to live in Oregon. In July 2020, Mark, Sonja, and their son packed their belongings and made the move to the great State of Oregon a reality.

Mark (trusting his wife’s

intuition) left his career of 22 years as a Marketing Professional and started their next adventure. They planned to take their time and determine exactly where they would settle after visiting various cities and sites. As it turned out, when they arrived in St. Helens, something just felt right!

They bought a house and became residents of South Columbia County. After Mark spent some time getting to

know the area and working on getting settled, he had an important turn of events while chatting with a representative of Cardinal Services. Learning about Mark’s background and experiences quickly sparked the interest of Cardinal Services (who are known for finding the right person for the job). Unable to divulge all the details, the Cardinal representative encouraged Mark to consider this “communications position” with a “communityfacing local organization.”

Again, trusting intuition, Mark agreed to talk to the potential employer and was soon told that the interview would occur at the County Courthouse.

Surprised and perhaps a bit overwhelmed with where this journey brought him, the interview resulted in a job offer. Fortunately for us, Mark Pacheco was offered a position with Columbia County in July 2021.

As I get to know each Board Member, I like to ask this question: What do you like most about your job, and

is there something you would like to improve upon during the 3-year term serving on the Board of Directors?

To this he replied, “I love my job. It is precisely the type of work I have always wanted to do - and I feel like I have been working towards it my entire professional career. I get to work with a great team at the county, one focused on improving our community, and I get to meet and talk to people from all walks of life. I get to apply my time as a marketing communicator to build and improve the lines of communication within our county and

beyond. At the end of the day, I find value and a real sense of fulfillment in the work that I do for my neighbors.”

Mark spent his early life in Arizona learning to drive tractors on cotton farms. He has always loved the outdoors, open spaces, and dirt roads.

His goal is the same for serving on the board as it is for his full-time job duties – as he shared, “I want to focus on transparency in my communications with the community.

And I strive to take a proactive approach to my work and the services I can offer.”

We are delighted to welcome Mark Pacheco as Director serving the South Columbia County Chamber of Commerce. We are excited about the many great things he brings to our team. His experience, local community awareness, and diverse thinking will also benefit our Chamber Members.

spreading cheer and offering joy and peace to those in their lives. Often they recognize that others may not have the same good fortune, privilege or abundance in their lives.

But what if this kindness and bounty was distributed throughout the year?

Amani means “peace” in Swahili, and providing peaceful comfort all year long, day in and day out,

is what the Amani Center strives to accomplish every day of the year, for every child who walks through their doors.

The Amani Center literally exists to start a path of healing, recovery, safety and peace for children impacted by all forms of abuse and neglect, as well as witness or exposure to criminal behavior.

When a child is living in fear or pain, they need a safe place to talk about what’s happened to them…

ONE time, without having to relive it over and over and over. The Amani Center IS that place in Columbia County. It saves a child from having to tell one of the most difficult experiences in their young lives to countless other in-

dividuals (such as law enforcement, an ER doctor, child protective services, the District Attorney, grand jury, a judge, mental health providers….the list goes on and on).

The Amani Center helps hundreds of children each year from our community.

The stories range from some of the most horrific things you could imagine,

to children and families in need of resources and support from caring, compassionate professionals at the Amani Center and partner organizations. The CDC reports that 1 in 7 children experience some form of abuse or neglect each year, and that number is likely an under representation of the true impact of child maltreatment due to fear.
