The Cavalier County Republican
welcomes you to the Rendezvous Region The Staff at the Cavalier County Republican would like to welcome you to the Rendezvous Region (Cavalier, Langdon, Pembina and Walhalla). Within this region there are many things you can take part in throughout the year. Whether you are into water sports, camping, hiking, golfing, theater, festivals, car shows, demo derbies or many other activities, the Rendezvous Region has something for you! Starting with the National Trails Day at Icelandic State Park, just a few miles West of Cavalier, all the way through November 24 when Icelandic State Park hosts their Christmas Open House and Visitor Appreciation Day. Some of the events that the staff at the Cavalier County Republican like to take part in include the Little Sturgis Motorcycle Ride-In that takes place in Cavalier on June 14. This year will be the 17th year that Cavalier has hosted this event. Fun all day long enters the streets of Cavalier. They will also have a free street dance both Friday and Saturday and the event wraps up with the Cavalier Fire Department’s pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Walhalla also has many great events to offer, like the 7th Annual Rendezvous Region Rib Fest and Cook Off on June 22. Stop in and taste the many great rib recipes. They are also planning a pumpkin festival in September again. So plan your pumpkin patch now, feed and water them well and you might end up the winner at the Biggest Pumpkin Contest. Be sure to spend your 4th of July in Langdon for their 125th Celebration. The activities start with their opening ceremony in the city park, picnic on
the 4th of July, a wine social and then the evening ends with free music by Hard Times and Free Beer. Then on Friday, July 5, the day’s activities include tours of the Langdon Research Center, art display at the library, Teacher Hall of Fame, Brothers of the Brush Beard Contest, Langdon Firemen’s Supper and then music by Kenny and the Classics in the afternoon followed by Front Fenders that evening. Saturday starts out with a 5K walk/ run, parade, volleyball game, car show, Little Miss Langdon Pageant, Demo Derby and music that evening by Fat Daddy’s and Bob and the Beachcombers. There will also be fireworks to wrap up the evening. You can finish your 4th of July weekend with breakfast at Maple Manor on Sunday, July 7 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Don’t forget Frost Fire Summer Theatre. This year they are showcasing The Music Man. Performances start June 29 and run Wednesdays and Sundays with an afternoon matinee and Saturday evenings through July 31. With great recreation areas in the Rendezvous Region, it is a great place for camping. If you enjoy bonfires with family and friends, great camping can be found at Icelandic State Park just outside of Cavalier and Mt. Carmel Dam just north of Langdon, both have great places to park a camper or even just primitive camping in a tent. Check out the other great events in the pages to follow. The Rendezvous Region is a great place to spend your summer! And we encourage you to take in all of the events this region has to offer.

Rendezvous Region Tour Guide
Welcome to Cavalier Founded on July 1, 1875 along the winding banks of the Tongue River, Cavalier is a growing community of 1,300. Cavalier is the county seat for Pembina County and is home to the Pembina County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites. Cavalier is the regional hub for services. A hospital, two clinics, a dentist, two pharmacies and an optometrist provide quality health care to the community and a progressive school system prepares the youth to meet the challenges of the future. Max Gudsense, a precocious penguin and mascot of the Retail Committee, invites everyone to the bustling downtown shopping district. You can find just about anything you could imagine on Main Street; clothing, sporting goods, shoes, jewelry and collectibles, plants and floral arrangements, appliances, hardware, computer technology, chiropracter, two photography studios, and a one of a kind outdoor photography studio, autos and financial institutions. For entertainment there is a movie theater, library and bowling alley. Hungry – there are fast food, home style and fine dining establishments to fit any appetite or occasion. Cavalier is located in the heart of the Rendezvous Region, an area bordering Canada and Minnesota in the northeast
corner of North Dakota steeped in history and natural beauty. The four seasons allow people to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including golf, tennis, water sports, hunting, snowmobiling and skiing. Just six miles west of the city limits and joined by the Cav-landic Trail bike path sits Icelandic State Park, a beautiful center for camping, boating and hiking. The Pioneer Heritage Center, Pioneer Machinery Museum, Gunlogson Arboretum and the Pembina County Museum are also located on the Icelandic State Park grounds. Farming has always b e e n a vital part of Caval i e r . T h i r d generation farmsteads are a common sight around the perimeter of the city. Innovative farming techniques and state-of-the-art equipment assure Cavalier a competitive edge in the world’s food market. Sugar beets, potatoes and grains are the chief crops of the region. The two richest resources in the Red River Valley are the soil and the people. Together these resources provide the opportunity for economic and community development. The blend of history and tradition, with a spirit of cooperation and an ongoing commitment to economic development is all a part of what makes Cavalier “Four Seasons, Many Reasons.” Cavalier treasures its past, delights in the present and is ready for the future.

By Megan Ault Cavalier Chronicle The 17th annual Cavalier motorcycle ride-in, “Little Sturgis of the North”, will be held in Cavalier on Saturday, June 15th with other activities scheduled June 14th and 16th. The “Little Sturgis of the North” first started 17 years ago. What originally started out with 50 or 60 motorcycles has now grown to an event that has attracted over 1,800 motorcycles and over 4,000 spectators over the years. If you have never attended this event, the committee encourages everyone to come and see the beautiful motorcycles. People from all over come together for fun in Cavalier, and the town’s population triples the day of the event. The day, while focused around the motorcyclists and the bikes, includes something for everyone. There will be motorcycle games, contests, music, inflatable games for kids, shopping, food, and much more! “What makes us most proud of our event is the unique aspect that our event offers something for everyone-we guarantee that anyone from the hard core biker to the local residents can come and have fun with so much to see and do through[out] this day” comments Nancy Jenson about what sets the “Little Sturgis of the North” apart from other motorcycle ride-ins. Every part of this event is free and open to everyone-regardless of age. Cavalier, now known as the “Little Sturgis of the North”, has now become the premier biker

The Cavalier Fire Department will host a pancake and sausage breakfast fundraiser Sunday morning, June 16th, from 8 am to 1 pm at the firehall. All proceeds will benefit the local fire department. This event would not be possible without the motorcycle ride-in committee and the copious amount of volunteers. What started out as a small motorcycle rally led by two people has now grown into a twelve person committee. This committee is committed to promoting Cavalier and takes great pride in the event, even though half of them do not personally own a motorcycle. The committee meets throughout the year to bring this event to life and puts in countless hours to make the “Little Sturgis of the North” even better! The committee would also like to thank the number of volunteers they have during the weekend of the event. Without all of these helping hands there is no way this event could take place. Recreation and history at Icelandic State Park in Cavalier Located on the north shore of Lake Renwick and near the Tongue River, Icelandic State Park offers visitors not only a wide array of recreational opportunities, but also glimpses of North Dakota’s homesteading heritage and its natural beauty. Boating, swimming and fishing for northern pike and other game fish are popular activities. Picnic areas enable visitors to enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the shade of old oak trees, while the campgrounds offer full amenities, including electrical hookups, modern comfort stations with showers and sewage dump station. Three sleeping cabins are also available from mid-May through the end of September. Also found here is the Pioneer Heritage Center, historic buildings, Gunlogson Homestead and Nature Preserve. This early homestead preserves the state’s pioneer spirit, while the 200-acre natural wooded area along the Tongue River is a sanctuary for plants, birds and wildlife. The preserve provides an excellent opportunity to view and study segments of natural communities marginally influenced by man. An extensive self-guided trail system has been established along the Tongue River, with access beginning at the Gunlogson Homestead site. Foot bridges provide easy crossing of the Tongue River and the area’s many natural springs. Numerous plants and animals are present, several classified as threatened or rare to North Dakota. Icelandic State Park is located five miles west of Cavalier on Highway 5. Visitors to Icelandic State Park this summer will need to be aware that access to the campground and lake will not follow the normal route due to work being done on Renwick Dam. The Pioneer Heritage
Center, hiking trails and Historic Buildings can still be accessed at the normal park entrance off Highway 5. Cavalier County Museum at Dresden has something for everyone
The Cavalier County Museum at Dresden opened for the 2013 season on May 26. The museum houses a delightful assortment of artefacts that reflect the history of our area. The displays there often tell a story, and local residents can often identify a donation from some of their ancestors. The cream cans, butter churns and gigantic mixing bowls tell us how local residents survived during hard times. They tell us about large families, threshing crews, and healthy sized portions. The still suggests a way of keeping spirits up and the old upright pianos, accordions and banjos were a part of their down-home entertainment. A complete collection of newspapers allow residents to research family history. Numerous other pieces of history, large and small, round out the story of Cavalier County.
The Cavalier County Historical Society works diligently to display the donated items in an attractive, interesting way. A lofting and lighting project, intended to be completed this summer, should help highlight several items at the museum. A wide shelf, part-way up the wall in the Memorial Quonset , will supply extra space to display many of the medium sized artifacts already at the museum. Since new contributions arrive every year, some of the displays can become crowded, and interesting items are often overlooked when they are tucked into dim corners. The new loft should improve the visual experience for visitors to the museum. Another change at the museum this year, is the change in personnel. Alexis DuBois has accepted the responsibility of managing the museum. Sharon Lundgren, who held the position for six
years, has decided to retire, but will be volunteering her services when needed. DuBois worked with Lundgren as an assistant for four years so will do a fine job of managing the museum. Her assistant will be Hope Bodnar. The work load in caring for all the buildings at the museum and preparing for the special events requires many volunteer hours. Anyone willing and able to help with any of the events or chores is encouraged to contact Alexis DuBois, 701-382-9902 or Kathy Muhs, president, 256-3342. The museum annually hosts three fund-raisers each year. The Threshers
Breakfast, held on Father’s Day will be June 16, featuring Langdon Locker sausage, pancakes, French toast and hash browns. History Comes Alive, the event usually held in July has been cancelled this year. The Flea Market, the final event of the season, takes place Sept. 1, and will conclude another season at the Cavalier County Museum at Dresden. The museum exists for people to enjoy, reflect and remember the Glory Days of our rural communities. The Cavalier County Historical Society invites everyone to make use of our wonderful facility throughout the season. Check us out online at museumatdresden.com.

Northern Light Art Council provides summer activities for all Northern Lights Arts Council is providing activities for all ages to celebrate Langdon’s 125th, whether you want to be an active participant or a member of the audience. First, Art at the Library, Langdon Roots: Celebrating 125 Years will be displaying the work of artists with a connection to Cavalier County. The artist might have lived here or had grandparents who lived here, any connection will do. The exhibit will open with an Artists’ Reception on Wednesday, July 3 from 5:30 to 7:30. The library, located in the historic Langdon Depot, is an excellent place for the exhibit. Its spacious basement with its airy south windows will be a pleasant place to view art. The exhibit will be open during normal library hours, except during the parade. Thanks to librarian Shannon Nuelle, the library staff and the library board for the use of this facility. Members of the committee are Lori Neubert, Janet Jacobson, Mindi Paulson, Jim Strong, Tim Goff, Leroy and Ellen Gassner and Carol Hart. The deadline for registration was June 1 and the deadline for bringing art to the library is June 28. We would appreciate local artists bringing their art before the deadline so we can begin set-up. The Langdon History Drama has parts for elementary students through adult. The script is a revised version of the original Centennial Script. Thanks to Bobbi Johnson, Arlaine Short Delebo, and Darlene Brooks who drafted the revisions. Bobbi and Arlaine
were two of the original script writers. The drama begins with Patrick McHugh and W.J. Mooney describing how Cavalier County was organized in 1884 and how E.J. Fox spent the winter of 1884-5 holding down claims and doing necessary legal work. McHugh and Mooney continue the presentation as they look into the future right up to 2013. The cast of characters follows the history through settlement, the tornado of 1909, two world wars separated by the depression, the ABM missile era, the fires on Main Street and the development of the wind farm. The script will be interrupted by appropriate songs from both a Children’s Choir and an Adult Choir. Thanks to Lisa Schuler and Kim Hart for directing the choirs and to Darby Hart for directing the drama. Missoula Children’s Theater will be in Langdon July 15 through July 20. Auditions for Beauty Lou and the Country Beast will be held at 9 a.m. on July 15 at Langdon Area High School. We want to try this venue as the Elementary School was miserably hot last year. We’re hoping the high school might have more air flow, but there will be obstacles to be overcome at the high school too. Thanks to the school for giving us this opportunity. It will be MCT’s 19th consecutive visit to our community. Participation is available to students who have completed kindergarten right through high school. There is no advance registration and no charge to participate. Performances will be Friday, July 19 at 7

Rendezvous Region Rib Fest and Cook Off to be held June 22
By Ron Cardino Republican Editor
The town of Walhalla will be hosting their 7th Annual Rendezvous Region Rib Fest and Cook Off on Saturday, June 22 in the parking lot of the Walhalla Inn. “You don’t have to be a professional cook to come out and participate in this year’s event,” said Walhalla Inn owner, Gene Solberg. “The competition is open to all amateur cooks out there that would like to come out and show their skills off; while also having some fun at the same time.” There is no cost to compete. The cook off will be judged on four categories: Tenderness of Ribs; Overall Rib Taste; Plate Presentation; and Best Side Dish. Contestants may earn as high as five points for each category and the prize money will be $300. Last year’s “People’s Choice Award” and “Judges Award” went to brothers, Mike and Steve Gapp of Walhalla. “Contestants may start preparing anytime after 9 a.m. “Cooking normally begins at noon and runs no later than 7 p.m. so that contestants are ready to show off their presentations to the audience,” Solberg mentioned. Ribs may be marinated prior
to the cook off, but must be cooked on site. Contestants are responsible for their own side dishes; which also must be completely prepared or cooked on site. Participants will need to bring their own smoker, charcoal and accessories along with them. “I’m hoping for a good turnout. Even though a couple of contestants didn’t show up for last year’s cook off-we still didn’t have too bad of a day. I would really like to see more new contestants coming out this year. It’s a fun day, so I encourage anyone out there who enjoys cooking ribs to come on out and join us on June 22.” “It’s a pretty laid back atmosphere out here,” said Walhalla Chamber of Commerce Director, Deidre Lee. Spectators can purchase “Taste Kits” (sold by the Chamber), but there will be about only 20-30 kits available for the event. Registration forms and deposits can be dropped off at the Walhalla Inn. Deposits for Ribs must be made, and will be refunded the day of the cook off; after the site has been cleaned up. Plan to attend the 7th Annual Rendezvous Region Rib Fest and Cook off on June 22 in the parking lot of the Walhalla Inn.

“Music Man” to be performed at Frost Fire Summer Theater

In 1957, the show became a hit on Broadway, winning five Tony awards including Best Musical and ran for 1,375 performances. The cast album won the first Grammy award for “Best original cast Album” and was number one on the Billboard charts for 245 weeks. The show’s success led to revivals and a popular 1962 film adaptation with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones, and also a 2003 television remake with Matthew Broderick and Kirstin Chenowith. “We love the Americana feel of the “Music Man”. It is packed with song after recognizable song, making it absolutely perfect for the whole family,” said Directors David and Amy Jo Paukert. “The Music Man” will open on Saturday, June 29 and will run until July 31. produced one of the “classics” in American Musical Theater. We felt it was time to do a major musical again. Frost Fire producted the “Music Man in 1991. We thought after 22 years it was time to do it again, and it has always been one of our favorites because of its wonderful music and clever dialogue.” The plot centers around conman Harold Hill, who poses as a boy’s band organizer and leader and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash. In River City, Iowa, prim librarian and piano teacher, Marian Paroo sees through him, but when Hill helps her younger brother overcome his fear of social interactions due to his lisp (speech defect), Marian begins to fall in love with Harold. Harold, in turn falls for Marian and risks being caught in order to win her. Characters Harold Hill and Marion Paroo will be played by Peter Foss and Danielle Larson. There will be a number of returning performers like Darin Kerr (17 years), David Paukert (7 years),

The show will also feature several local area performers like Langdon resident Chuck Sheffler, who will play a conductor/Constable, Jordan Thornberg (Quartet) and Carol Clark (Scenic Painter of Walhalla, Addie Thornberg (grandaughter of Melanie Thornberg) of Fargo, who will play the role of Gracie Schinn, McKinley Solberg (formerly of Walhalla) of Fargo, will join several other cast members to form the River City Youth, Charity Stegaman (Stage & House Manager) of Cavalier, and Charlene Snustad of Neche, who will partake as one of several town gossipers know as the Pick-alittle ladies. This will be David and Amy Jo’s 24th year of being involved with the Frost Fire Summer Theater, and their 19th year of directing. The Paukerts joined the theater during its fifth season and have been co-directors of the show since 1993. “In all those years, we’ve only taken one season off and that was in the summer of 2004. We discovered that although it is a huge commitment, we really do enjoy directing the shows at Frost Fire. Richard and Judith Johnson are true visionaries and we are indebted to them for the opportunity to have been able to direct not only some of the greatest classics of musical theater, but also some premiers of new shows such as “Civil War”, Forever Plaid”, and “Les Miserables”. It has also been a pleasure to work with so many talented performers and musicians over the years, and to watch them continue their careers in performance. David and Amy Jo met in Frost Fire’s production of Anne Get Your Gun in 1989 under the direction of Larry Damico. The following year David played “Ben Rumson” in Paint Your Wagon (1990) and then “Marcellus” in the Music Man (1981). A year after they were married the Paukerts played roles in I
Do! I Do!-in 1992 as a dinner theater in the lodge. The following year they took over the directing responsibilities, however, they still had more opportunities to be on stage; as Amy Jo played the role of “Purdie” in Pump Boys and Dinettes (1995), and David was “Tenardier” the in-keeper in Les Miserables (2008), “The Rabbi” in Fiddler on the Roof (2009), and “The Duke” in Big River (2011). The Paukerts have co-directed the following Frost Fire Productions: “Me and My Girl”, “Forever Plaid”, “Pump Boys and Dinettes”, “Shenandoah”, “George M.” and “The Swing Years”, “Sound of Music”, “Oklahoma”, “Big River”, “Civil War”, “West Side Story”, “GODSPELL”, “The All Night Strut”, “All Shook Up”, “Les Miserables”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Buddy Holly”, and “Ring of Fire”. Last year, the Paukerts directed “Ring of Fire”: a biography musical portrait where a set of gifted singers and instrumentalists sang through some of the greatest songs of one of America’s most brilliant singer/songwriters, Johnny Cash. “We were extremely pleased with the audience’s responses to “Ring of Fire”. Over 6,000 people came to see the show. We were fortunate to have some very talented singers and musicians who were able to tell the story of Cash’s life through his music.” Frost Fire Theater is located seven miles west of Walhalla in the beautiful Pembina Gorge. “The Pembina Gorge is a beautiful part of North Dakota; which many people have not yet discovered. North Dakota Parks and Recreation has recently created some scenic overlooks and trails throughout the gorge to help people access its beauty more easily. Performing in an outdoor theater has its unique challenges, but we love being able to hear the rustling of the aspens and the birds singing as we perform.” For more information about the summer theater at Frost Fire, visit their website at www.frostfiretheater.com.

By Ron Cardino Republican Editor
The 5th Annual Smash for Cash Demolition Derby will be held on Saturday, July 6 located on the west side of Dan’s Truck and Carwash. Gates will open at noon and the derby will start at 3 p.m. Last year’s turnout was great,” said co-organizer Lance Schill. “The car count was our highest ever and the show was action packed.” Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for kids ten and under with all proceeds going towards two Smash for Cash Scholarships for Langdon Area High School Seniors. Additional money left over will go towards helping the Shriners Children Hospital. According to Schill, there were about 20 drivers who participated in last year’s demolition. “We’re hoping to have a lot more this year, due to our event being held on the weekend of Langdon’s 125th Centennial Celebration, and that our purse is much bigger this year.” Jared Benoit of Olga received first

During the demolition, raffle tickets ($10) will be sold for a chance to win a kid’s 90 cc Arctic Cat four wheeler with proceeds being distributed between the Smash for Cash Scholarships and the Shriners Children Hospital. “Our expectations are to put on a safe and fun experience for everyone to enjoy,” Schill commented. If your adrenaline gets amped up by watching tough-built cars smashing into one another, while supporting a good cause at the same time, then this will be one show this summer that you won’t want to miss out on. The 114th Annual Deuce of August Icelandic Celebration will be held in Mountain on August 2, 3 and 4. The Deuce of August is the largest Icelandic event in the United States and is verified by the North Dakota Tourism Department as being the oldest ethnic festival in the state of North Dakota. The historical significance of the event traces back to 1874, when on August 2, church services were held throughout Iceland to commemorate the fact that Iceland was receiving a new constitution from Denmark. The Deuce of August is an annual event hosted by the Icelandic Community Association (ICA). The seven Icelandic settlement communities that make up the ICA are Gardar, Mountain, Hallson, Vidalin, Fjalla, Thingvilla and Svold. The people from these communities and many other supporters from all over the United States are instrumental in the success of the celebration and ICA activities. The goal of the ICA is to celebrate our Icelandic heritage and culture with the main focus to promote and organize the annual “Deuce of August” celebration. The three day event draws nearly a thousand visitors from all over the U.S., Canada and Iceland. The weekend begins on Friday, August 2nd with the American Legion fish fry at 5pm and a street dance from 9pm to 1am. This year the band on Friday night is Tripwire. Saturday morning begins with a parade at 10:30am. Grand Marshal’s for the parade are John and Darlene Johnson, Honorary Grand Marshal is Reverend Fafnis. You can find out more about the Grand Marshal’s on the website at www.august2nd.com. After the
parade there are many activities to be enjoyed for all ages throughout the day. The traditional Vikur Salad Luncheon in the basement of Vikur Church is at 11:00am. Other activities will include the genealogy center, kids jump houses and this year we are bringing in a bungee trampoline that will be fun for all ages! There will also be souvenir sales, Icelandic goodies from the Akra Shack, Kids and Adult pedal pull, and a heritage program at 2pm in the community center. At 6pm there is the traditional Icelandic Communities International Fellowship Dinner in the Mountain Community Center, of course Icelandic Cod is a favorite among many that have this meal. There will also be other meats for you to enjoy. The traditional Old Time Dance will be at the American Legion Hall from 7 to 10pm and there will be a street dance from 9pm to 1am. This year we are taking a step back in time and have the 80’s tribute band, Back For More on Saturday night. Fireworks are generally lit off at 10:30pm. As you can see the event is quite full on Saturday, but it doesn’t end there. Come back to Mountain on Sunday for the ND State Tractor and Pickup Pulling Contest at 1pm. For more information visit the website at www.august2nd.com and like us on facebook. The Deuce of August depends on the support of volunteers to keep this a fun, entertaining, successful and safe event each year. If you are interested in volunteering there is a form available on the website, or send an email to Jolene Halldorson at littlehelga@hotmail.com.

Fossil dig excavation returning to Pembina Gorge site August 19-25 By Ron Cardino Republican Editor
The North Dakota Geological Survey, North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department, and Walhalla Economic Development Center will be sponsoring a week long scientific “Fossil Dig” for the week of August 19 through August 25 at the Pembina Gorge. The dig site is located just northeast of the Frost Fire ski & snowboard area and overlooks the Little North Pembina River. Fourteen thousand years ago, eastern North Dakota, including the Rendezvous Region, was covered by glaciers during the ice age. At the conclusion of the ice age, the glaciers melted away from Lake Agassiz and formed into what we now commonly call the Pembina George site. Cretaceous-age rocks were deposited into the oceans 80 million years ago, containing fossils of the Mosasaurs (giant sea lizard), Pterosaur (flying reptile), Plesiosaur, Hesperornis (seabird), Carcharias (sandtiger), Enchodus (salmon like fish), Rays, and Xiphactnius (tarpon-like fish). The flat terrain is also known
as one of the flattest areas in the world. “I like to think of the Mosasaur as being the “Tyrannosaurus Rex” of dinosaurs among the species,” commented Economic Development Director, Kathy Stremick. Price for adults will run $90-which includes breakfast, lunch, snack, water, and transportation to and from the dig site and will be held on Monday, August 19, Thursday, August 22, and Friday, August 23 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Full Dig Family days will be held on Tuesday, August 20 and Wednesday, August 21 from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. which will include breakfast, lunch, water, and transportation to and from the dig site. A family of two (adult + youth) will cost $110, family of three-$165, and a family of four will cost you $220; Half-family Dig Days will be held on Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25 with a morning session from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (transportation, breakfast, and water) and an afternoon session from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (transportation, lunch, and water). A family of two (youth + adult) will cost $55, fam-
ily of three-$85, and a family of four will cost $110. For those who will be staying for more than one day-there will be lodging available at the Forest Wood Hotel and the Hillview Hotel, and camping sites are also available at the Riverside Park in Walhalla. The North Dakota Geological Survey Fossil Resource Management Program was inaugurated in 1983 in response to concern about the historic and ongoing removal of fossils. The program has three primary objectives: 1.) To promote public understanding and awareness; 2.) To identify and preserve significant fossil sites and specimens; 3.) To conduct research to determine the kind of organisms that inhabited North Dakota at various times in the past and to determine the types of climates and environments in which those organisms lived. During last year’s fossil week, amateur fossil diggers spent time searching for prehistoric remains of marine reptiles that had inhabited the warm shallow waters of the Western Interior Seaway; during the dinosaur era. “We found partial
vertebrae remains of the prehistoric Mosasaur,”said State Paleontologist, Dr. John Hoganson. “In other areas of the site we also came across a small jaw bone of a fish, several pieces of tooth fragments, scales, and a few other partial remains of sea creatures that existed here 80 million years ago.” The fossil dig has piqued the interest of many, as far away as Florida and Colorado, and many within the State of North Dakota have traveled from Fargo, West Fargo, and Minot. According to, others have traveled from Rugby, Behlah, Mandan, Bismarck, and Moorhead, Minn. “Last year we had families arriving in from Colorado, Florida, Idaho, and Minnesota,” Stremick added. If you’re intrigued by this, make sure you register online at www. walhalland.org, or for more information, please contact Kathy Stremick at 701-549-2707 before the week of August 19. When registration forms and payments are received an informational packet will be sent in the mail prior to the dig. Payment is due at the time of registration and all fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.
