SHS WreStling Coach speak: Jim Jones, 13th year The Tillamook Cheesemakers edged Scappoose for a Region I championship last season. This year, the Indians are looking to exact a bit of revenge. According to SHS coach Jim Jones, there’s a pretty good chance that both the Cowapa League title and the Region I title will be a battle between the Cheesemakers and the Indians. “I think depending how things shake out, I think us and Tillamook will be strong at regionals. Estacada might do well too,” Jones said. With a strong group of Region I place-winners returning to the Tribe lineup this year (see right), Jones thinks Scappoose has a shot at topping Tillamook. “Our team goal is to win district, win regional, beat Tillamook and win a trophy at state. A trophy at state is a lofty goal, but I feel we have a shot at getting a trophy,” he said. In order to make those trophy dreams a reality, the Indians will need to spread out their lineup. Jones said currently there is a lot of talent bunched up between 145160 pounds, while some of the lower weight classes don’t have as many wrestlers. “We need to try and fill in there, get the young guys confident and ready for districts,” Jones said. Based on what he’s seen during the first two weeks of practice, Jones has every reason to believe the team will develop nicely throughout the season. “It’s a quality group of kids. Practices have been smooth, very focused. The work ethic has been very good,” Jones said. In addition to the half-dozen wrestlers Scappoose sent to last year’s state meet, there are plenty of new additions ready to punch themselves a ticket this year. Jones said sophomore Braxton Sue should have an even better season this year now that he weighs 106 pounds. Last year, Jones said, Sue wrestled at 106 (the lowest OSAA weight class) while weighing only 96 pounds. Jones said Tyson Broadbent, and Logan Brooks have both improved from a season ago. Cody Erhardt and Steven Wells have both looked good thus far in practice, Jones said. Freshmen Zach Gadbois and Clayton Dietz should both contribute during their debut seasons at the high school level as well.
Senior Hunter Hoyt is one of several tough wrestlers in the Scappoose lineup between 145-160 pounds.

Conference breakdown Four Region I teams are ranked in The OWF’s top 10 preseason rankings, with Scappoose ranked tenth. The three teams ahead of Scappoose are Tillamook (fifth), Estacada (seventh) and North Marion (eighth). Those were the top four teams at last year’s regional competition, and SHS coach Jim Jones said there’s a good shot things will shake out close to the same this year near the top. Scappoose’s loss of Kurt Mode – who moved back to Crook County – will leave an opening in the lower weight classes. However, there is plenty of reason to be optimistic about Scappoose’s chances of returning to the state meet. Three Indians – senior Isaiah Goodrich, senior Taylor Walden and junior Devin Ray – have wrestled at multiple state meets. Walden is looking to return to state for a fourth time this season.
