TILLAMOOK COUNTY

YEAR IN REVIEW

The Tillamook Swiss Society took part in June’s Dairy Days Parade, which occurred on the same weekend as the Tillamook Rodeo. In August, the county fair offered five days of fun to residents and visitors alike, with the main display hall serving as a hub for activity. A

s 2023 drew to a close, the Headlight Herald reached out to county commissioners, city managers and mayors across Tillamook County to ask for their assessments of 2023 and a look ahead to 2024. Across the county, infrastructure and facilities projects and plan updates were repeated themes as Tillamook works to accommodate a growing number of tourists and maintain an affordable and

enjoyable lifestyle for those making the county their home. The biggest project completed in 2023 was the $22 million construction of a new 1.7-mile alignment for Cape Meares Loop Road. The new road reconnected the Three Capes Scenic Route in early November, before December flooding knocked out a portion of Sand Lake Road south of Tierra Del Mar, again severing the route. In 2024, work will begin on the $52.7-million, Army-Corps-of-Engineersled repair of the south jetty at the entrance to Tillamook Bay, with completion expected in 2025. The project will stabilize the jetty and halt the erosion that is

currently pulling the head of the jetty back. Tillamook’s county commissioners approved an update to the county’s short-term rental advisory ordinance in July, based on feedback from an advisory committee formed to address community concerns about the properties’ proliferation. The new ordinance imposed a 1% cap on the number of new short-term rental properties allowed in each community across the county and limited license transfers to one, while updating other regulations. Tillamook County Commissioners Mary Faith Bell and Erin Skaar were also put in the unusual position of selecting a colleague following Commissioner

David Yamamoto’s August announcement of his early retirement. Bell and Skaar selected Doug Olson to serve the remainder of Yamamoto’s term through 2024 and he was sworn in on January 2. Looking ahead to 2024, more infrastructure projects are on the horizon as are a number of important races, levies, bonds and questions that will be voted on by residents. Plans are under way for a bond ask of $25 million to construct a new emergency radio system for the county, as are those for an operating levy by the Tillamook Fire District and a merger of the Garibaldi Fire Department with the Garibaldi Rural Fire District. Two county commissioner positions

will also be up for election, with incumbent Skaar recently declaring in the race for her seat and Paul Fournier ramping up a campaign for the seat recently vacated by Yamamoto. The county also saw a full calendar of events in 2023 from the Tillamook County Fair to Pacific City’s Dory Days, Rockaway Beach’s Kite Festival, Bay City’s Pearl and Oyster Festival and everything in between, with another full calendar ahead this year. Tillamook YMCA purchased Tillamook Bowling Lanes with the help of a $1.2-million gift from the Pastega Foundation, the North Coast Recreation District broke ground

on a $12-million pool building, the Friends of Tillamook Air Museum celebrated Hangar B’s 80th anniversary with a fundraising gala, Tillamook High School’s Charity Drive raised over $185,000 to support local charities and Tillamook County residents gave back to their community in a host of other ways. Thank you for your continuing support of local journalism as we strive to cover the wide swath of stories that impact life in our county and region. We look forward to another year of progress, fun, cheese, trees and ocean breeze.
