Just two weeks after receiving a liquor license from the City of Tillamook, DeGarde Brewing owners Linsey Hammacher and Trevor Rogers are opening a tasting room downtown at 1909 Second St. The opening is set for Sept. 21. As for their beer, “Our styles are more obscure,” Rogers said. “Not a lot of other brewers are utilizing local yeast and bacteria populations, yet there’s a fantastic population of micro flora and fauna to make use of in this area.” Rogers and Hammacher call their brewing process “wild fermentation.” They said 90 percent of their beer is fermented in oak barrels, a throwback to an older, more traditional way of brewing beer. The two have been operating a 7-barrel craft operation adjacent to their home for four years. They decided to open a tasting room downtown to help make their beer better known. “It’s nice to present

Some 40 leather-clad, motorcycle-riding members of the Patriot Guard Riders gathered Sept. 14 in Twin Rocks to honor one of their own – Jim Burnett, killed in a motorcycle accident June 22, 2012. A small, well-kept memorial marks the spot where Burnett was killed. During the ceremony, it filled with flowers and tokens – even a can of chili. Burnett’s memorial was the last stop in what district captain Dennis Reynolds of Netarts called a “trifecta” – three memorial visits in one day. Besides Burnett, the riders honored Jerry Manning, who died in February and is buried at Willamette National Cemetery; and Fred Brehony, who is buried a short distance from his home in Carver, near Oregon City. All three were “ride

captains” for the Patriot Guard. “We’re honoring three very good people,” Ed “Santa” Holterman told the crowd. “I’m proud to be part of this group.” Holterman was with Burnett when he was killed. The two were en route to a “mission” – a veteran’s funeral – in Manzanita when Burnett was broadsided by a truck emerging from Minnehaha Street at Twin Rocks. He died shortly thereafter. “You can ask ‘what if?’ forever,” Holterman said. “What if I’d been in front? What if it was me and not him? I don’t sleep a lot,” he conceded. Last weekend’s memorial ride was followed by a barbecue at Nehalem Bay State Park. Burnett wouldn’t have wanted sadness, chaplain Bill Roberts told the riders. He’d have wanted a party and

“Tillamook is one of those places that you want to get away from, and then when you do finally get away, you can’t wait to come back.” So says Jerry Kilgore, who has been away from his hometown of Tillamook for decades. But the community was never far from his heart, he said, as he chased his dreams of becoming a country music singer. “I have such a love for Tillamook, so it’s really exciting to get to come back and play.” The “Tillamook Music and Brew Festival,” scheduled for Sept. 21, will be a first of its kind here, featuring live music from six different performers and beer tasting from different craft brewers. Spearheaded by Kilgore himself and organized by Cynthia Tuel, owner of Divine

Rockaway Beach City Councilor Tom Martine has resigned, a decision announced Sept. 11 during a City Council meeting. The council voted to accept Martine’s resignation and declare his position vacant. Martine was convicted Sept. 4 on charges of hindering prosecution, a felony, and destroying evidence, a misdemeanor. As a convicted felon, Martine cannot hold elected office, Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis told the Headlight Herald. Marquis prosecuted the Martine case. Rockaway Beach Mayor Danell Boggs said the City Council likely will appoint a successor during its next

scheduled meeting, Oct. 9. Martine had been reelected in November 2012. His term lasts until the end of 2016.
