The 2012 Tillamook football roster is loaded with talent, but it’s going to be up to the individuals to put in the necessary work if the Cheesemakers are going to make the playoffs this season.

reached once all last year against the last place and winless Seaside Seagulls. If that great start wasn't encouraging enough, the Cowapa League could be flipped upside down this season with Scappoose, Banks, Astoria and YamhillCarlton all losing their opening games of the season, Astoria losing 52-0 to Gladstone. So, it's early in the season to be talking about much more than the next game on the schedule, but from the look of things early in the year, the Cheesemakers have a very good shot at a winning season.

In fact, if they continue to play like they started the season, Tillamook could quietly sneak through the Cowapa League and take the league title before the other teams even knew what hit them.

illamook's girls soccer team hasn't been known as a program that dominates the Cowapa League. In fact, the last few seasons have been tough for the team, wining just one game last year. But, going into her second season as the head coach, Daeh Christensen sees something in this year's group of girls she hasn't see in the program for a long time. “We're faster than any team has been in Tillamook in a years,” Christensen said. “We are young and inexperienced and some of the girls are still learning how the game is really played, but our skills are improving quickly.” Being young and inexperienced is something a team has to deal with when they graduated 12 varsity players off of last years team and only returned 4 this year. But, despite losing so many seniors, this year's team has one huge advantage last season's team didn't. “We are a lot stronger than we were last year,” Christensen explained. “Last year we didn't have girls who had the leg strength to make long passes or cross the ball from the sides to the front of the goal. That was a huge disadvantage against teams who did have that strength. This

year about 90-percent of our girls can make that cross.” Unfortunately for the Lady Cheesemakers, the Cowapa League is going to be very tough this season. Scappoose was excellent last year and they're returning 10 seniors and Seaside is always very good leaving the other teams fighting for the third 2012 GIRLS SOCCER SCHEDULE spot. ning season in quite some time, but this team is very capable of it.” If there was one chink in the Cheesemakers armor it would be on the line. They're very young up front, with only Marcus Cheney returning from last season. But, they're fast and in the world of high school football, speed kills. “This season we're much faster all over the field than we've ever been in the past,” Dickson said. “I can promise you we're not going to be so conservative with our play calling. We're going to cut loose a little bit and get after it on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.” That aggressive play calling was evident in the Cheesemakers first game of the season at Clatskanie. Strang threw the ball 23 times and completed 19 of those attempts to a variety of receivers, racking up 200 yards passing. A total that eclipsed the previous school passing record. f there was one word to describe this year's Tillamook High School football team, it would be 'experienced.’ This year's squad has experience oozing out of every spot on the field. If it's not returning ball carriers Jacob Wassmer, Cole Berge and Jordan Thompson, it's at receiver with Ron Allen, David Waud and Jake Fowler catching passes. To take it one step further, last year's early departure of starting quarterback Brandon Pyatt opened the door for sophomore Matt Strang to fill the void and get some reps at the varsity level early in his career. Between the 20 seniors returning to the team and a junior quarterback with a strong arm and game experience, second year head coach Matt Dickson thinks the Cheesemakers have something special going on this season. “Our goal is to put together a winning season and make it into the playoffs,” Dickson said. “We haven't had a win-

f the Tillamook cross country team and the work they've put in over the summer getting ready for the season could be summed up in one phrase, it would be 'Tillamook Distance Project'. According to new Tillamook Head Cross Country Coach Pat Zweifel, the Tillamook Distance Project is attempting to build team success to levels not seen in Tillamook since the 1980s, stressing the importance of working together as a team with the need for a few key individuals to step up and lead the boys and girls teams to new levels. “Leadership is contagious and gets the ball rolling for many years ahead,” Zweifel said. “Leaders today are setting an example for kids just now entering the program. As freshmen become seniors, they in turn will lead new freshmen.” Zweifel got this teamwork mentality started over the summer by challenging the runners to embark on 10-week run across America and back again. This 5,936 mile journey was to be accomplished by adding up all their weekly miles ran. Zweifel challenged his runners to run as many miles as possible this summer in preparation for the upcoming season. Miles ran by family of team members and THS cross country alumni are also eligible to add to the total. If the team’s goal is met, new warm ups will be purchased. Furthermore, if the team is able to run one way to London (6,429 miles) runners enrolled in the program will be supplied new racing shoes. “Generally the miles ran over a high school running career are directly proportional to success,” Zweifel said. “The more miles they run the more successful they will be.” The team as a whole completely bought into the idea and together, they made it all the way to London. A big part of that accomplishment is runners stepping up as leaders just like Zweifel hoped they would, and an entire mentality change of the program. “We have to have kids coming into the program that are expecting to run well and get better and eventually make Tillamook a state champion caliber team every year.” A few of the team members

now are at that level and hopefully there will be even more by the end of the year. “Aaron Josi and Paulo Valez are my top boys and both of

3

them have been good leaders,” Zweifel said. “I expect the boys and girls teams to get to state this year and the boys should finish in the top five.”

The majority of the Tillamook cross country roster traveled to Prineville, Ore. for camp this summer to get themselves ready to compete at the highest level in the Cowapa League.

looking to carry the team deep into the playoffs. The team did suffer the loss of a few excellent players in Sara Strang, Keleigh Hoopes and Sierra Streeter, but with six experienced seniors coming back, the team shouldn't have any problem filling in the gaps. Especially since they got some special attention at team camp from one of Oregon's top volleyball coaches, Rosie Honl from Crook County. Honl has led Crook County High School to six state titles and took the time to work with the THS coaches and players at Tillamook's team camp this Tillamook’s six senior volleyball players have been playing summer. illamook boys soccer had one of it's most successful seasons in history last year when they went 10-3-1 and took second place in the Cowapa League. They were playing for first place at the season’s end game, but lost to Astoria. They made the playoffs and hosted a home game against Madras, but the season ended abruptly with a Madras win. This year's team is going to miss a few major contributors from last year’s team, but is returning enough talent to still compete for the league title. “We graduated four seniors last year which was close to 75 percent of our scoring from last season, said THS soccer coach Brian Reynolds. “But, we have a lot of guys good coming back and some younger guys we're expecting to step up in a big way. Some of the top offensive threats coming back for Tillamook are Ryan Hammond, Ernesto Mondragon, and Phillipe Josi. “Ryan Hammond and his left foot are kind of sleepers for us and Phillipe's stepping up nicely, Reynolds said. “And as far Ernesto goes, I expect him to surpass Tillamook's single season scoring record of 12 goals. Possibly by mid season. The other rock solid staple of

t's an understatement to say the 2012 Tillamook volleyball team has a lot of potential going into this season. They're coming off a good season last year where they took third place in the Cowapa League behind Banks and Astoria. But the season had a bitter ending with a defeat to Estacada in their play-in game. This year's team has plans of going much deeper into the post season. “Our goal is to win the Cowapa League and get past just a play-in game in the state tournament, said last year's jv coach and this season's new varsity Head Coach Kim Seidel. Seidel isn't your typical first year coach. Besides coaching jv since 2001, she's also known her particular group of seniors for quite some time. “All of us seniors have been playing together since about fifth-grade, said THS senior Christine Schilliger. “Kim (Seidel) has coached all of us at some point. The group Schilliger is referring to are the six returning seniors: Schilliger, Kennady Johnson, Hailey Travis, Katie Warren, Kara Moore and Marissa Zerngast, who are

Last season’s keeper of the year Eddie Barajas returning to anchor the Cheesemakers.

Tillamook's team returning next year is last year's Keeper of the Year, Eddie Barajas. “Eddie is a special kind of player that I feel should have been named the Keeper of the Year three times instead of just once, but having him back, and him being such a good team leader is huge for us, Reynolds said with excitement. Besides his top guns, Tillamook has some young talent that's shown in the pre-season. “Last year’s top scorer Jhoanny Mendez's little brother Leroy has some amazing ball control and should set up a lot of goals this season, Reynolds explained. “We also have Pablo Garcia coming back. “There are a few uncertains with our backfield, but we'll see how they grow together. One thing is for certain, Tillamook soccer will be joined together by the passing of David Cheney. “David would have been a good freshman for us this season, Reynold said. “The team chose to dedicate this season to him and they put David's motto, “Never give up on their practice jerseys so they always remember what they're playing for. 2012 TILLAMOOK BOYS SOCCER SCHEDULE

t's pretty safe to say this will a big rebuilding year for the Neah-Kah-Nie volleyball team. It's not that the team isn't capable of winning games; that's yet to be seen. The problem is, there's only one returning player from last year's team who made it to the play-in game where they were beat by Weston-McEwen. The rest of the very talented team was lost to graduation, making a rough row to hoe for Head Coach Jacque Vandecoevering. “We only have two seniors this season,” Vandecoevering said. “Rachael O'Quinn and Carley Jones, but it's only Carley's second year of playing, so we're going to have a lot of work to put in.” With so few returners coming back and losing so much talent, there will be some big hurdles ahead in a very competitive Northwest League for the Pirates, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. “We're going to be young and inexperienced, but there will be plenty of freshman seeing varsity time this year and that's only going to make us stronger in the future,” Vandecoevering said.

“We pretty much have a full team of freshman to get ready, but I expect a lot from O'Quinn. She's got the best mental understanding of the game and the rotations and she's going to have to really help lead the team.” Besides O'Quinn, there will be a few familiar faces on the Pirates roster. Morgan Eastin, Kristina Birdick, Tasha MabeDeRost and Anni Kelly all played last year and are going to fit in somewhere in this year's team. “It's going to be interesting to see who steps up and fills the

leadership and vocal roles on the court,” Vandecoevering said. There's no question it's going to be tough to go from a state playoff caliber team to a very inexperienced team, but sole returner Rachael O'Quinn isn't discouraged about the future of the team. “I think it will be good,” O'Quinn said. “We'll have a young team since last year our whole varsity team was seniors except me and the swingers, but from the looks of our practices, we have some good freshman coming in.”

he 2012 Neah-Kah-Nie Cross Country team may be small, but the athletes on the team are there for a reason. They are looking to enjoy themselves, run hard and if all goes well, qualify for state. And if you're the coach of a cross country team that only has a few male runners participating and a girls team made up of almost all freshman looking forward to a fun season, what would you do? Run in the best races available, of course! “We have worked really hard to prioritize attending local meets this season,” said NeahKah-Nie Cross Country Coach Brett Duer. “We will be attending the Ultimook Race and the Seaside Three Course Challenge. We'll also be hosting the Big Foot Classic at Friends Camp in Rockaway Beach and we are looking into hosting a new race to be held at Nehalem Bay State Park. “Since the Big Foot Classic is really a test to surviving the giant hill, we wanted to also host a race that will be flat, fast and highly competitive. The Nehalem Bay Course would be just that.” The NKN team does have five seniors including Branson Laszlo leading the team as team captain. “Brad is a true runner and has been training year round,” Duer said. Also returning for his second year running Cross Country is two-sport athlete Logan Romig. Romig is a returning junior this year who was two places way from qualifying for state last year in his first ever attempt. This year Romig is running the ball for the NKN football team but will be participating in as many cross country events and practices as he's able. “Logan is a tremendous athlete with great speed and deter-

mination,” Duer expressed. “I expect him to do great things this year.” For the past three years, the Pirate women were only able to individually place, but not score as a team because they needed the required five runners to qualify as a team. Unfortunately, they didn't have enough participation. But, this year's team is a complete team with five girls who are all excited and ready to go. Senior Willa Childress and Sophomore Rebecca Savage are both out this season and both of them qualified for the state track meet last year in the

women's 4x4 relay, proving they have top notch speed. “They will be leading the women's team all year,” Duer said of Childress and Savage. Erin Savage and Annie Rohweder-Romig are both promising up and coming freshmen for the women's team. Both of them put together a solid middle school resume. “I'm looking forward to watching everyone improve,” Duer said.

The Pirates cross country team may be small, but they play hard including running Neah-Kah-Nie Mountain as part of their practice routine.

he Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates football team could have hung their heads going into the 2012 season. Besides being 4-6 last season and missing the playoffs, they lot two huge pieces of their football team to graduation in Scott Porter and Austin Cherry. Both of them were the team leaders on both sides of the ball as well at the long time Quarterback and the Defensive Player of the Year for the Northwest League. “Scott and Austin were both great leaders for my team, said Neah-Kah-Nie Head Football Coach Scott Ross. “They left some pretty big shoes to fill, but we have more guys who can do the job. One of those guys is this season's starting quarterback Tanner Repass. Repass was injured in the third week of the year last season, but as a senior he's back and running the offense for the Pirates. He's a big bodied quarterback that should leave defenses hurting every time he decides to keep the ball. When he does decide to hand the ball off, he has a plethora of returning tailbacks who are all capable of breaking tackles and breaking a big play every time they touch the ball. “Brad Watson could be fastest running back in the Northwest League and we have a lot of other really fast guys in the backfield. Watson's isn't the only Pirate with blazing speed. Alejandro Quintana and Logan Romig can flat out fly when they get into open space and Craig Grasseth is an absolute bulldozer up the middle. Between the four of them and Repass occasionally keeping the ball, the Pirates are going to be moving the ball by committee all season. “We aren't going to fill Scott and Austin's spots with one single player because we really don't have any one superstar on this team, Ross said. “What we do have is a lot of competitive guys who are here to work hard. That was exactly what it looked like when the Pirates hosted the Riddle Irish in their

SIZE MATTERS for 2012 Bobcat football

I

With at least three linemen than go over 300-pounds on the roster, the Nestucca Bobcat’s football team is probably the biggest team in the Northwest League. If they run the plays like Head Coach Jeff Schiewe draws them up, their team is going to be a force to be reckoned with and could run right over their competition all season long.

making an impact.” There's absolutely zero doubt football games are won and lost by a team’s ability to control the line of scrimmage, and with as much size as the Bobcats are returning up front, it's safe to say they have a very good chance of controlling anybody. “We have to execute but we can be very good when we do,” Schiewe said with a chuckle. “It's really a matter of making the mental decision to go out there and do it because we're capable.” Assuming the line does their job, it's going to be up the offense to put the ball in the end zone and Drace Moeller might be the best person in the Northwest League

f you look back at last year's Bobcat football record at the end of the season, you probably wouldn't expect much from this year's team. They were 1-8 last season and didn't show many signs of getting better throughout the year. But that was last year. This year's Bobcat roster is loaded with size and strength, the likes of which haven't been seen for some time at Nestucca High School. The Bobcats are returning 15 of 22 starters from last season including last year's starting quarterback Austin Woods, the bruising tailback Drace Moeller, and all around skill players Zack Welch, Jade Downs and Max Kirkendol. All of which are not only more experienced, but bigger, stronger and faster than they have ever been before. “It's hard to find a noticeable weakness on this year's team,” said Bobcat Head Coach Jeff Schiewe. “There might be a few teams faster out there, but that's about it. We're big.” The size Schiewe is referring to is on his extremely beefy line he'll have leading the way this year. Besides 300-plus pounders Wyatt Peterson, Rich Roberts and Sam Kenagy plowing though opposing linemen with their overwhelming size and power, the Bobcats are also sporting skill on the line. “Last season Joey Chatelain was named the team’s Lineman of the Year,” Schiewe explained. “But we also have Jacob Menefee who's one of the strongest kids in the school, Nathan Parks contributing and Nolan Dimmitt

all there. Besides the graduating girls, there were others missing. Many others. Lacy Boisa is out due to surgery, Natasha Helsing didn't come back, Jody Green graduated early and Sophia Solano moved away, leaving Head Coach John Elder looking at a very empty roster. “Last year we were completely set,” Elder said. “Now they're all gone.” Though the team was decimated by graduation and various other reasons, there is one girl coming back to anchor the 2012 team. Jasmine Boisa. Boisa was an all-league labero last season for the Bob2012 NESTUCCA VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE cats and Elder is happy to have her and her leadership back on Date Time Opponent the floor. Nestucca Cross Country is small, but has potential

Tillamook Headlight Herald • September 12, 2012

he Nestucca Bobcats volleyball team is coming off a pretty good season. Even though they lost their play-in game at Portland Christian last year, they did make the playoffs. When the season ended they were losing star players Brittany Hurliman, Jessica Elder, Rebecca Windle and Maria DeVos; but they were returning with more than enough talent and experience to repeat as a playoff team in the 2012 season. Fast forward to this fall when the girls came out to play and the players who were expected to come back weren't

years of experience. “I really have no idea what to expect for the upcoming season,” Elder said with a sigh. “I don't remember ever losing this many girls at once and it's very rare to have someone move out of town. “What I do know is our goal is always to make the playoffs and we're going to keep trying to get better all year long.”

Labero Jasmine Boisa is the only returner from last season’s varsity squad and should anchor the 2012 team.

he Nestucca Bobcat cross country team has their work cut out for them this season. The team was in a little disarray early in the year before Head Coach Misty Wharton knew who'd be on the team and who was out. But, when it was all said and done, Wharton's team came out looking pretty good with six runners on the team. There will be four boys and two girls. The boys team is made up of seniors Parker Jensen and Kyler Jones, junior Cody Fouche and freshman Raymond JacksonCruz. The girls team consists of sophomore Rebekah Whittles and freshman Jillian Wilkinson. Jensen and Jones have the ability to make some noise this season individually, but because of the small team size, all the runners will have to compete individually instead of trying to win as a team. “Each of the athletes shows great potential,” Wharton said. Editor’s Note: The Bobcat season schedule is yet to be determined. It will be posted on at Tillamookheadlightherald.com as soon as it’s made available
