A message from Co-Sponsor, Tillamook County Solid Waste
By Justin Weiss Tillamook County Interim Solid Waste Program Manager
Spring is here, bringing with it a time of renewal and growth across Tillamook County; a season filled with cleaning, budding fruits and veggies, and excitement for the warmer months to come.
At this year’s Home & Garden Show, we plan to highlight big changes to our community’s waste and recycling systems, ultimately planting seeds of sustainability for the coming seasons.
Throughout the Home & Garden Show, the Tillamook County Master Recyclers will be on hand to help:
• advise how you can develop at-home composting systems for your garden needs,
• quiz you on your knowledge of what can and cannot be recycled at our facilities
throughout the county,
• explain how plastic pollution in the ocean becomes microplastics on the beach, and how you can help tackle this problem before it poses a health risk to beachgoers or causes an economic impact on our local economy,
• create upcycled items to enhance and beautify your home garden ecosystem,
• learn about the forthcoming revamped Tillamook County Master Recyclers Class,
• help complete your next painting job with locally recycled latex paint, and
• inform you of upcoming changes to the list of materials the county can recycle.
July 1st of this year marks the implementation of Oregon’s Recycling Modernization Act (RMA). The new legislation aims to “make recycling easier for the public to use, expand access to recycling ser -
vices, upgrade the facilities that sort recyclables, and create environmental benefits while reducing social and environmental harms, such as plastic pollution. Producers and manufacturers of packaged items, paper products and food service ware will pay for many of these necessary improvements and help ensure recycling is successful in Oregon (DEQ).”
The forthcoming changes will have a
positive impact on Tillamook County’s ability to collect/pro -
cess more recyclable materials, while helping to cover many of the
associated costs. Come to our booth to learn all the details!
Old House Dahlias is a flower farm located here in Tillamook
At the 2025 Home and Garden show we will be selling dahlia clumps that you will still have time to plant for good blooming results this summer and fall. Dahlias are the power house of a garden, with so many varieties and a long blooming season. They will continue to impress even when everything else is done blooming in September and October. I look forward to seeing you at the show this year. Please stop by if you have any questions about growing dahlias.

Tillamook Beekeepers Association announces 2025 Bee Days
Focusing on children
This year, the Tillamook Beekeepers Association is focusing on children. A sensory garden was created for the children at our larger Apiary and Garden Learning Center. Planter
boxes labeled sight, touch, smell, and taste contain plants that attract pollinators and stimulate those four senses. The fifth sense, hearing, is symbolized by a chime hanging from the garden entrance arbor.
This year we are creating a seed planting area called Sunflower Planting
Station where children from the community may visit and learn all about pollination, pollinators and experience planting seeds both in the Apiary and Garden Learning Center, and in small pots that they may take home for their own gardens. This area of the garden will be surround-
ed by dozens of sunflowers of every variety imaginable.
Four young beekeepers have painted this year’s annual raffle hive: Paisley Andrus, 9, Ashton Andrus, 7, and twins Hazel and Russell Stelzig, 9. These children are not just artistic but also contribute to the manage-
ment of the family bee hives, wearing protective bee suits of course. Hazel and Russell assist their grandfather, Rick Stelzig, who built the hives, while Paisley and Ashton work with their parents, Matt, and Paige Andrus, particularly during the honey extraction process.
Raffle tickets may be
purchased at our website tillamookbeekeepers.org or in person at the Home and Garden show. The hive will be awarded to the winner on Sunday April 20. Secondary prizes include a $100 gift card for the TCCA Farm Store and a $50 gift certificate for JAndy Acres Nurseries.

Come learn about the updates to the Yard Debris Program at the ODF booth at the Tillamook Home and Garden show!
Come visit Old House Dahlias owner Mark Harvey at the Tillamook Headlight Herald Home and Garden Show April 26 and 27. This is a good opportunity to stock up on dahlia clumps at a super good price. Mark will be selling single clumps for only $6, or two clumps for $10. Come early to get the popular Holyhill Black Widow variety before they sell out!
Other varieties for sale will be dahlia balls, miniature dahlia balls, water lily varieties, and informal
decorative and formal decorative dahlias. Most of these are cut flower varieties. Mark is also happy to answer any questions about growing dahlias here on the Oregon coast. What is a dahlia clump? It is the cluster of tubers associated with a dahlia plant that grows under the soil. When the dahlia plant is harvested in the late fall, the clump can be washed and stored for replanting the following spring “as is”, or it can be divided into numerous tubers.

Upcycling pallet wood for garden products
My husband, boys and I have been making planters, birdhouses and chicken coops out of reclaimed pallet wood for the last five years.
The pallets are heattreated to resist bugs and rot, which is great because that means they are organic and safe for gardens and birds. We’ve enjoyed making and selling to the community much cheaper than the big box stores. Our chicken coops are small and can house 2-4 chickens comfortably. Wyatt, 9, and Raylon,

The planters come in two sizes. Large 40” x 28” x 12”
And small at 40” x 18” x 12”
