Community answers call for toys JIM FOSSUM sports@thenewsguard.com
Five-year-old James wants a toy T-Rex and a dragon. Younger brother Lawrence, 4, wants a Frisbee for his dog. No one knows what the packages the two young Kennedy toddlers will rip open this morning will contain, but the important thing is they now have presents from Santa Claus thanks to what organizers called an overwhelming response for their cries for toys as time was running out on the city’s annual holiday food and toy drive. “This is absolutely amazing,” said Colvin Cutshall, whose step kids and girlfriend and mother of the two boys, Claudia Kennedy, benefitted greatly from the community’s last-ditch effort to put smiles on
Talks are expected to continue in January to develop a partnership between Samaritan Health Services, operator of Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, and the City of Lincoln City to allow Samaritan to lease and operate the Lincoln City Community Center’s fitness facility. During the North Lincoln Hospital District’s Dec. 19 monthly board meeting, Dr, Leslie Ogden, the hospital’s chief operating officer, outlined concerns about community rumors concerning the partnership effort. “My concern is that we haven’t even begun to fully work with the City and discuss the options that may be possible to partnership before some in the community began rumors and distorted the whole process,” Ogden said. Ogden said the rumors indicated that Samaritan Health Services was planning to take over the entire Lincoln City Community Center. “We aren’t talking about taking over the Lincoln City Community Center,” Ogden said. “We have an obligation to change people’s thinking and to educate them See CENTER, Page A7

Concerns voiced over Logan Park proposal A proposal to build a 76-unit, multimillion dollar mixed used housing project on Logan Road at Roads End sparked several concerns Dec. 18 during a neighborhood meeting at the Liberty Inn. Many of the concerns from the 30 people who attended the meeting centered on increased traffic, loss of natural views, and the ability of developers to finish the project and generate home and apartment sales. Following an 11-acre clear-cut two years ago,

Road area, said while the proposed development has many good ideas, she is concerned. “I would agree with the people at this meeting,” Loch said. “We don’t have a lot of jobs and opportunity, and it is hard to imagine that these would be full-time residents living at Logan Park. People are concerned about the hotel quality that may develop because there won’t be jobs. Who’s going to buy these homes?” Chuck Carvell owns property across Logan Road from the proposed development.

plans are in the works to develop a natural area with trails and lookouts surrounded by single-family homes, row houses and flats, and a center green space that would anchor the proposed Logan Park. But as of Dec. 20, no official site plans have been submitted to the City of Lincoln City. Land-use consultant Lawrence Qamar joined David Reece and Rich Catlin of Reece and Associates, a civil engineering and land-use planning company based in Albany, to outline the Logan Park plan during the meeting.
