Jade Hachem and her dog, Sadie, were fast asleep when disaster struck. “I woke up to see fire beside my head,” said Hachem. “My bed was on fire and there was smoke all around.” Hachem, a traveling nurse from Rome, Ga., had just rented the condo unit 304 at the Sea Gypsy Hotel/Condos in Lincoln City a few days earlier for two months as she prepared to start work for an eight-week assignment at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. Hachem quickly got out of the burning bed and out of the condo. “I instinctively went to grab a fire extinguisher that I had noticed earlier out on the stairwell and tried to go back into the room and put the fire out,” she said. “The fire was so hot and burning quickly.” Hachem suffered burns to her hands and ears as she tried to get back into the condo. “I remember worrying about my dog Sadie,” said Hachem. “I couldn’t see her See FIRE, Page A6

Property owners surrounding Devils Lake could soon find out specific costs they might face as the City of Lincoln City moves to improve the health of the lake. Over the past few months, the Lincoln City Council has discussed concerns about hundreds of aging septic tanks around the lake that are increasing the threat of environmental damage to the lake. Lincoln City City Manager David Hawker said many of the tanks are leaking into the lake. The Council has been discussing a septic tank
