Swamped car signals more safety concerns

It isn’t surprising to Lincoln City Police, but finding cars stuck in the sand and surf continues to a dangerous problem at the beach. A 2005 Honda sedan that got caught in the ocean just west of the 21st Street area in Lincoln City was removed from the beach Sept. 13, but not until after a few tense moments. Lincoln City Police were sent to the site earlier in the morning of Sept. 13, when witnesses called 911 about a car stuck in the surf with water all around it. Police arrived to find waves lapping over the sides and top of the car. Police identified the driver as Christine Turenne, 52, of Portland, who was not in the car as the waves surrounded the vehicle. “She apparently drove beyond the 15th Street beach access point and past the tide line,” said Winn. “We’re not sure if she simply parked the car and walked off for a time and came back and found it stuck in the sand, or what.” Winn said Turenne attempted to get a tow truck to come and pull the car off the sand.

In the police blotter posting on Sept. 11, it was misstated that Rachelle Rehberg used a debit and credit card fraudulently. In fact, Rehberg called and reported that her debit and credit card had been used fraudulently. The News Guard regrets the error.

The number of shopping bags in hands of visitors at the Tanger Factory Outlet Center is one good indication of how the summer tourist season went in Lincoln City. “We saw a lot of people leaving the center with shopping bags and that is an indicator that they are spending their dollars,” said Diane Kusz, Tanger Factory Outlet Center manager. “Shopping is still a favorite thing to do while on vacation. We had a wonderful summer.” Kusz said most visitors

Gov. John Kitzhaber, the Oregon Legislature’s Coastal Caucus, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced an historic partnership Sept. 12 to fund critical dredging projects for Oregon’s small coastal ports. Under the new agreement, dredging is scheduled to begin as early as this weekend at the ocean entrance to the Siuslaw River near Florence, followed by the entrance to the Umpqua River and the port of Port Orford this fall and winter. Dredging will continue at other small Oregon coastal ports in 2014. Details about the dredging were discussed during the recent Oregon Coast Economic Summit held in Lincoln City recently, but information about the dredging agreement released from the Governor’s office did not mention how the agreement would impact dredging for the port of Depoe Bay. “I haven’t heard anything about this agreement yet, “said A.J. Mattila, Depoe Bay Mayor. “We have been told that it could be happening in March.” Mattila said the dredging was

Council president. “We are hopeful that it will happen at Depoe Bay. The dredging is critical for us because it helps maintain our harbor which is one of the economic engines of our town.” State Sen. Betsy Johnson said the Coastal Caucus is committed to making sure all the small ports along the Oregon Coast will be dredged. “We have to dredge these little ports and that includes Depoe Bay and all of them,” said Johnson. “We are starting in the south. We understand all these ports have needs and we are working to help them get money to have the needed permitting data in place. We recognize they don’t have money for that.” Michelle Helms, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said Depoe Bay is on the list to have its port dredged but logistics and weather will detrmine when the operation begins. “This agreement does include Depoe Bay, but we have yet to nail down a specific time for that dredging project,” said Helms. “The Corps understands these navigation channels are vital to each community and we are committed to maintaining
