Harbor District Seats New Commissioners, Elects President and Secretary

Incumbent Harbor commissioner Rick Shepherd administered the Oath of Office to newly-seated commissioners-elect Dan Schmidt, Annie Nehmer and John Evans. Upon seating, Commissioner Dan Schmidt nominated colleague Gerhard Weber. Commissioner Annie Nehmer the top vote- getter in the November 5 election, nominated herself to Board president. Gerhard’s nomination was confirmed on a 4-1 vote, Nehmer dissenting. Nehmer was unanimously appointed to the Board’s Secretary position.

The Meeting’s tenor was arguably slow and deliberate and sometimes cantankerous when

As the aroma of roasting turkeys wafted through the air, volunteers at Crescent City Foursquare Church geared up for their annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner. This cherished tradition has grown from humble beginnings to become a cornerstone of holiday giving in our coastal town of about 7,000 residents.

What started in 1993 as a modest gathering serving 50 meals has blossomed into a massive operation expected to feed over 1,000 people this Thanksgiving. The event, which will cost approximately $8,000 this year, relies heavily on community donations and the efforts of more than 100 volunteers.

“This dinner embodies the true spirit of Thanksgiving,” said Pastor Roger Bodenstab, who has led the Crescent City Foursquare Church since 2014. “It’s about coming together, serving others, and sharing our blessings.”

The church took over organizing the dinner in 2017, building on the foundation laid by Teri Sandler and a small group of community members who initiated the event nearly three decades ago. Today, it’s a well-oiled machine, with the church ordering food in bulk and preparing it at the Crescent Elk Kitchen, generously provided by the Del Norte Unified School District.

Community Thanksgiving dinners like this one in Crescent City have become increasingly common across the United States, offering not just a hot meal but also a sense of belonging to those who might otherwise spend the holiday alone. These events often serve as a lifeline

Standing-Room Only audience filled the Flynn Center to honor and recognize CCPD individual and canine along with Service Before Self recipient. Crescent City Police Chief Richard Griffin beamed with pride as he presented award plaques to recently appointed Sergeant Yeng Lo and acknowledged retiring canine, Lt Kai and his handler Sgt. Hmong family members and the community watched in pride as Officer Lo was promoted to Sergeant. Lo has been with the CCPD since 2010. Canine Lt. Kai came to the CCPD in February 2017 and has honorably served for seven years. Lt. Kai has just turned nine, December 11. Canine Kai has an admirable record in police

Some years back, the Council created the Service over Self communiy recognition award named in memory of past away Fire Chief Stephen Wakefield. The recognition is presented the first Monday in December to a recipient who personifies Service over Self. The 2024 winner of this prestigious recognition is Michael Young, civil engineer, interim City Manager, Habitat for Humanity volunteer/ advocate and so many more accolades.

In other City business, Councilors needed a super majority 4/5 vote to renew the emergency status on the soon-to-be completed Pebble Beach Drive, between 7th and 8th Streets. Councilor Isaiah Wright was absent from the Monday meeting. An under-the- weather Jason Greenough called into the meeting via Zoom to cast the fourth vote to ensure continued Cal Trans and US Highways funding. For whatever reason there is always someone on an elected board who thinks he or she has all the answers. The current front runner on the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors is Supervisor “Einstein” Howard. Following the August 2023 loss of the County’s sole source of electricity due to fire, it has become Supervisor Howard’s primary focus to make sure something is in place such that it never happens again. Initially, trying through the resurrected Tri Agency, Supervisor

Howard, one of its chief proponents, pushed for off-shore wind as solution. With the ultimate demise of the Tri Agency, the wind fizzled and “Einstein” went looking for a shiny new toy.

Now there are many ways of generating electricity, but few are economical and reliable. Much to his credit, “Einstein” Howard has managed to avoid advocating for anything producing electricity that is remotely economical or reliable.

Once off-shore wind was dispatched, a new toy appeared on Howard’s horizon, biomass generation of electricity. Like off-shore wind,

The dam removal project seems like the right answer for most, and now she’s done, but wait... now we’re about to see 1 foot of rain all over Northern California. So, what has happened in the past when half of this much rain dumped in such a short period of time? It might be a good time to look back in history, as this is fast approaching.

Biomass electrical generation, is neither economical nor reliable. Even if circumstances were economically optimal, biomass generation suffers from lack of efficiency as well. And another of “Einstein’s” well thought out toys quickly lost its luster. How strange, it was soooo shiny!

Barely a month passed and “Einstein” was at it again. A sure-fire winner, micro-grids! What could possibly go wrong? We are dealing with “genius” after all. The shiny “new toy” pushed by “Einstein” Howard was barely out of the box when it magically appeared on the County’s “Strategic Plan” as a

Services. For the last 24 years, I’ve served Del Norte County as a program coordinator for our Department of Child Support Services.

The work hits close to home for me. My mom, a single mother, juggled up to five part-time jobs just to make ends meet. Growing up, my family depended on TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) to stay afloat.

That’s why 24 years into my career it’s so painful to watch as Del Norte fails its children. Because of the County’s chronic short-staffing and lack of investment, since June 2023 our Department has had to close our doors on Fridays. We should have 15 staff. Instead we have nine- and

“priority”, to be completed in the next 12 months. Wouldn’t we want a closer examination of that new toy? After all it is shiny, comes with the possibility of $3 to $4 million in grant funding, and is neither economical or reliable. What more can you ask for?

Oh yes, that, it is being pushed by the man, Supervisor “Einstein” Howard, with such a great track record in redundant electrical power generation.

The current “new” toy being proposed is solar panels, a battery farm and a backup diesel generator. Solar panels properly maintained with a life expectancy of twenty years, a battery farm of five to

six years, and a generator powered by diesel fuel, all to cover the brief inconvenience of a few days’ loss of power every sixty years or so. No thoughts of maintenance or replacement cost, all on the County’s future dime. No thoughts of, is it a “necessary” expense or necessary in the first place? Just the rush to have “somebody else” pay for it. It’s somebody else’s money after all. Sooooo shiny!

As with nearly everything our Board’s resident genius proposes, the toy starts out looking oh so shiny, then cost, reliability, maintenance, and is it truly a vital need for the County comes into play?

it’s an endlessly revolving door. In the last

two years, we’ve hired and lost five staff to other counties and employers. Keep in mind it takes two years to fully train and develop someone in our field. What does this mean practically?

Imagine you are a struggling Del Norte family as the Holidays roll in. You come into the office during a crisis. Unfortunately, it’s Friday, so that means your ability to speak to someone in person about funds for your newborn baby’s diapers formula is delayed. You’re panicked and you’re rightfully frustrated. As you fret over the well-being of your newborn kid, you

As has been spoken numerous times before, “We are a poor rural County and our needs should be much more modest.” If we cannot afford the next new shiny object in the first place, should we make the purchase, knowing what will happen following the purchase. More local dollars to keep the new toy operating, so that the few, micro grid after all, can have lights, most who already have backup generators in the proposed grid, while the majority of the County’s residents sit in darkness. Swell! Just the thing for our resident “Einstein” to advocate for.

know that the situation would be entirely avoidable if only Del Norte County could adequately staff its public services. As your public servants, we love our jobs- and we know Del Norte’s children deserve better. We work tirelessly, even as many of us are struggling and

This year’s dinner here will feature an added attraction: the Del Norte County Library will be on-site, giving away books to attendees. “We’re not just feeding bodies, we’re nourishing minds,” Pastor

Bodenstab noted.

The Crescent City Foursquare Church, part of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel founded by Aimee Semple McPherson in 1923, has been a fixture in Del Norte County for nearly a century. Officially chartered in 1931, the church has grown to an average weekly attendance of 425, becoming a significant force in local outreach and

community service.

Pastor Bodenstab’s journey with the church spans nearly three decades. Starting as a janitor in 1995, he worked his way through various roles including youth leader, children’s pastor, and Christian school administrator before assuming leadership of the congregation.

Under his guidance, the church has expanded its community initiatives.

Recognition

Beyond the Thanksgiving dinner, it operates a food bank, provides counseling services, and runs youth programs aimed at fostering leadership and community engagement.

As this year’s dinner wraps up and plans for next year take shape, the church is actively seeking donations to cover the costs. Community members can contribute through the church’s website or by

mailing a check directly to the church.

In an era where many bemoan the loss of community spirit, the Crescent City Foursquare Church’s Thanksgiving dinner stands as a testament to the enduring power of collective goodwill. As one volunteer put it, “This isn’t just about providing a meal. It’s about creating a family for those who might not have one on Thanks-

giving.”

For many in Crescent City, this dinner has become as much a part of their Thanksgiving tradition as turkey and pumpkin pie. And as the volunteers prepare to open their doors once again, they’re reminded that in giving, they often receive the greatest gift of all: the joy of serving others.

Women’s Club and Historical Society Partner to Install Lights at Battery Point Lighthouse

“Let’s quit complaining and do something about it,” exclaimed Crescent City Women’s Club project coordinator Liz Freeman. As its annual project, the Women ‘s Club has partnered with the Del Norte Historical Society to replace all flood lighting around Battery Point Lighthouse, last Tuesday, just before dawn, as high tide was rapidly approaching. Sean Smith and his crew crossed the shallow waters and self-marooned on the island and began the task of installing flood lights, long absent. The all day project was completed by mid-afternoon, allowing exit during the incoming low tide.

Vickie Baggett, president of the Women’s group organized the effort to give back to the community, was unable to be on hand due to previous travel plans. Coordinator Freeman last remembers the flood lights were replaced when she was president in 2005. Christmas Holiday lights will be installed about December 11, weather permitting.

The Crescent City Women’s Club and Del Norte Historical Society wish you a joyous Holiday season, Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to fee and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. Third, you must submit a bid so that the trustee receives it no more than 45 days after the trustee’s sale. If you think you may qualify as an “eligible tenant buyer” or “eligible bidder,” you should consider contacting an attorney or appropriate real estate professional immediately for advice regarding this potential right to purchase. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
