Are there Lessons to be Learned on the Southern California Fires?

The devastation wrought by the Santa Ana winds, last week was horrific. At least 24 dead, 12,000 plus buildings destroyed, thousands more left with nothing, their homes are gone.

Did Del Norte learn anything from the havoc and desolation left behind?

The fire itself, at the time of publishing, has yet to be anyway near containment.

The Triplicate asked those in the know if this horrific devastation could have been avoided. Fire Chief Kevin Carey, past Board of Supervisors Chair Dean Wilson, the Del Norte Office of Emergency Services all agree, the horrific Santa Ana winds were unstoppable. The area stretching from Malibu to Pacific Palisades to Altadena looks like a war

Golden no more, estimates to rebuild may cost upwards of $150 billion and may take decades to bring this once iconic area back to quasi- normal. Will it ever be the same. No! There is culpability here. For years, the State has been cutting back funding and services at Cal Fire. Los Angeles City represents Pacific Palisades. Administration at both the State and local level has been bereft. Dysfunctional fire hydrants with no water pressure sat functionless, as the City of Los Angeles diverted precious funding to DEI and homeless, instead of precious water to those with homes. Mayor Karen Bass, who vowed in a campaign promise never to travel out of the country, broke that promise in short order by travelling overseas at least four

times since being elected, the most recent on a junket to Ghana, all on the beleaguered public dole. Gov. Newsom was also culpable cutting funding for fire and law enforcement and spending $24 billion on the homeless. When confronted by a

Hit and Run Fatal

Supect Enters Plea

Alexandra Danielle Diehl,33 entered a plea of not guilty after being charged with felony Hit and Run, VC 20001(a 192), Vehicular Manslaughter in the December 4 incident which killed Jun Ming Nip, 80.

The CHP investigation reported Diehl was driving her 2019 Nissan on Northcrest Drive at Madison, when she struck the victim who was walking across the marked crosswalk at approximately 6pm. The impact hurled the victim to the number 1 lane of southbound traffic. Moments later, a Toyota 4-Runner travelling northbound structure the shopping cart of Mr. Nip. A third vehicle, a white Kia travelling south on Northcrest, noticed the victim laying in the road,

swerved but was unable to avoid hitting him. Del Norte Ambulance expediently transferred the victim statements Sutter Coast Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The CHP received information the suspect vehicle was located. Ms. Diehl was arrested at 8:35PM.

Ms. Diehl will appear in Dept 2 of Del Norte Superior Court for her Preliminary Hearing

Guest Commentary - Opinion by Samuel Strait

Governor Newsom and the Legislature Play at Politics while LA Burns

Over a half century ago, I read an article in a magazine while waiting in a local doctor’s office about the failure of the Sacramento government to address a growing crisis forming from managed neglect of state and federal lands. While the author’s concern was primarily directed at the mismanagement of timberlands in the forests of California, it is sad to see those prophetic words have come to pass with increasing regularity.

Not as if Newsom and our state-led brain trust of Democrats can get out of the way of their own sheer stupidity, after all the incoming Federal administration of Donald Trump is far more “dangerous” than the roaring inferno engulfing Los Angeles. I suppose it is inevitable the state’s voters end up with what they vote for: Bad Forest Management and a growing number of catastrophic wild fires over the last couple of decades.

“Climate Change” has become the

only thing Newsom and his Sacramento pals can point towards despite the fact scientists have made it clear the climate in California hasn’t changed measurably for centuries. No crisis “end of the world human causation ahead”, just plain old Sacramento politics gone awry.

Years of “environmental” attention to anything but the welfare of citizens needs in California have led to forest and brushland mismanagement, reduction of water storage, and a minimal effort to be proactive at fire prevention on federal and state lands. The consequences have been enormous with millions of acres burned just since Newsom has been in office and billions of dollars of loss in California.

In the coming weeks it will very likely be revealed the true extent of Newsom’s role in what has happened over the past few days in our most populous City. Far be from me to point to our own tale of woe from the summer of 2023 where the

Helen Nadine Corcoran Roberts passed into the arms of Jesus on January 3, 2025, at the age of 87. Helen was born in Woodland, CA where she was raised with her siblings on the family farm until her high school graduation. Helen attended college in Huntington, IN where she met her beloved husband of 68 years Stanley Roberts. After they were married, Stan was in the Army and Helen joined him in Germany. Their young married life held many adventures in Europe traveling in their Karmann

Ghia. They settled in Crescent City, CA where Helen was a devoted housewife and mother to their two daughters Jennifer and Kimberly. Helen was known for her incredible energy and work ethic. Our family agrees: Mom accomplished more between 5:00 and 10:00am than most people do in an entire day.

Helen’s laugh was infectious as was her wild Irish sense of humor. She was definitely a One-of-akind person who made life just a little more fun and interesting. She loved to

We Are In A New Era

As Los Angeles burned for days on end, scientists made an announcement that 2024 was the hottest year on record. With temperatures rising around the globe scientists are warning that the world has entered a dangerous new era of chaotic floods, storms and fires made worse by human-caused Climate Change.

The firestorms ravaging our country’s second-largest city are just the latest of extreme weather that is growing more furious as well as more unpredictable. Wildfires are highly unusual in Southern California in January, which is supposed to be the rainy season. The same is true

regular occurrence of lightning storms each year set thousands of acres of state and national forest alite. Lightning storms which are forecast days in advance with no recognition that prepositioned firefighting assets could mitigate what has always been an annual event in the northern half of the State.

Billions of promised dollars for wild fire prevention siphoned off for “Democrat” priorities, water storage bungling, fire department budget cuts, and DEI policies in hiring subordinates in critical positions are likely to be just the “tip of the iceberg” if any “true” investigation of the failures surrounding the LA fires was to happen. Don’t hold your breath folks, the spin has already begun.

I very much doubt Californians will learn much about the “human” causation of the LA fires when Climate Change is the much more “politically correct” boogieman to blame. Far be it, incompetent

garden and cherished her beautiful flowers and fruit trees. She was a wonderful cook and best known at the neighborhood potlucks for her outstanding homemade blackberry cobbler and apple pie.

Summers were spent with friends and family traveling, and hiking to the Devil’s Punchbowl, Buck Lake, and Damnation Creek Trail. She enjoyed camping and hunting adventures and swimming in the Smith River. Helen had an agate collection from hours spent walking the beaches and rock hunting with out-of-town visitors. She was always delighted to host and was very warm and welcoming of company into their home.

Helen was fondly known as “The Scripture Lady” for years at the Fort Dick Christian School where she helped students memorize their Bible verses in a fun and amusing style. For those blessed by this particular experience, you know what this means and can appreciate the good humor she brought each Tuesday. Hopefully we can all still recite Psalm

for cyclones in Appalachia, where Hurricanes Helene and Milton tore through mountain communities in October. Wildfires are burning hotter and moving faster. Storms are getting bigger and carrying more moisture. And soaring temperatures worldwide are leading to heat waves and drought, which can be devastating on their own.

Around the globe, extreme weather and searing heat killed thousands of people last year and displaced millions. In Europe, extreme heat contributed to at least 47,000 deaths in 2023. In the United States, heat-related deaths have doubled in recent decades.

1. Helen was known for hauling kids in her red VW Bus to various activities as well as a trip or two on the old Jaw Bone Road. Without fail every Wednesday, the same curbs would be jumped on C Street coming in for piano lessons and parking at the Post Office. A terrifying but fun experience in character-building for sure.

Nothing brought more joy to Helen than being a grandma. She loved all her grandkids and even dubbed herself “Grandzilla” when she felt an occasion called for “Grandmotherly Discipline”. As with all things Helen, playing with the grandkids was executed with much laughter and loud exuberance. Playtime was spent “weed eating” and running a toy chain saw. Baking with grandkids yielded a guaranteed mess with flour on the floor and ceiling. Lego building was always an adventure, and no playtime was complete without Dr. Seuss books and a Toy Story or Cars video.

Helen was a charismatic person who relished life

leadership will be painted with obvious failings on the part of either the Governor, Sacramento leadership or Los Angeles, as well.

I am not sure what kind of Democrat/ Progressive nightmare has to happen in California before citizens in the State realize things have to change. Newsom and the current legislature simply are not understanding the abject failure of Sacramento’s policies on Californians.

The current disaster with the fires in Los Angeles has played out numerous times for decades in other parts of the State. It takes years to restore some semblance of normality after such an event. Constant inadequacy on display by the Newsom administration will not change. Newson has become the Governor fiddling while the State burns to the ground. Trump and Climate Change, REALLY?

to the fullest. She was a dedicated Christian who lived and shared her faith to the end. Countless lives have been prayed for and changed because she knew the power of prayer. She was an active member of the Fort Dick Bible Church and later attended Smith River Baptist Church. She will be missed, and her memories will live on in our hearts.

Preceded in joining the Lord are parents John and Nora Corcoran, husband Stanley Roberts. Brothers Henry, James, Thomas, Joseph, Robert, and Charles Corcoran. Sisters Mary Culley, Margaret Fletcher, and Grandson Jacob Deming.

Survived by daughters Jennifer Roberts Pratton (Morris) and Kimberly Roberts Deming (Thomas). Brother Daniel Corcoran (Janice). Sisters Kathleen Jones and Anna Smith. Grandchildren Malachi Pratton (Gabriela), Kellina Pratton, Kaleb Deming, Elijah Deming. Great Grandchildren Mataea, Nathan, and Timothy Pratton. Numerous loving nieces and nephews.

“We’re in a new era now,” said former Vice President Al Gore, who has warned of the threats of Global Warming for decades. “These climate related extreme events are increasing, both in frequency and intensity, quite rapidly.”

The question remains; when are we going to stop polluting our planet from burning fossil fuels to power our homes, cars and industries?

We would like to thank the staff at Timber Ridge Eureka for their years of excellent care provided to our beloved Mother. Helen’s final resting place is at Catching Creek Cemetery in Myrtle Point, Oregon. The family would like to invite friends to celebrate the lives of Helen and Stanley Roberts on January 25, 2025, at 1:00pm at Smith River Baptist Church. As both Stanley and Helen found joy in life and shared it with others, we ask that you do the same. Go do something that brings YOU great joy and share it with those around you. Some fun ideas: Plant a tree, plan a potluck with friends, drive a new road, read a good mystery, play a song, sing, write a poem, memorize a new verse, take up photography. And if you feel so moved, please feel free to share. We’d love to hear how Stan and Helen inspired you. “Those who hope in the Lord will soar on wings like eagles” ~ Isaiah 40:31

I would like to take a moment to recognize our local Humane Society as well as Camp Barry for all that they do for the pets in our community. Both places are full of warmth, compassion awesome staff & volunteers that just go above and beyond for the animals that they care for. I encourage anyone and everyone to stop by both places, check out the atmosphere. Donate if you can. The humane society accepts recyclables, and the proceeds help fund treats for the pets. Camp Barry offers obedience classes and currently has pets available for adoption. If you’re looking for a positive pastime, volunteering to walk the dogs would be a great fit. In closing, Thank you…To everyone… Kari Wilkins Crescent City

Drivers Face Sticker Shock When Auto Insurance Renewals Arrive

California has the highest automobile insurance rates in the country; you already know that.

California motorists can expect sharp increases in rates by an average of 16.2 percent. The rest of the country is averaging about 7.5 percent increase. You can shop and compare but the reality is daunting. Here are some hints on moderating your rates:

• Don’t get speeding tickets. Absolutely don’t

get a DUI.

• Hold off your teenager with getting a driver’s license.

• Ask for discounts. 1015 percent if you or your new young driver takes the CHP Defensive Driving course, March 19, in Crescent City The news remains dreadful. Geico, Allstate and Liberty Mutual have all pulled out of the Golden State. Farmers and Progressive have all scaled back coverage in California. Why are these rate increases happening in 2025?

Auto accidents increased 25 percent in California, between 2020-2021. The obscene rates reflect vicious inflation in the last few years and complex

supply chain issues. Collected premiums are not sufficient to allow carriers to offer affordable rates.

The California Insurance Dept is not blameless and has denied rate increases to carriers. The Insurance Commission has frozen premium rates. Many carriers have pulled out of the State, as reported. An alarming and increase amount of drivers have zero insurance. The

figure has spiked to 17 percent of drivers who have no insurance. Another six percent of drivers are under insured. Much of the non-insured has been attributed to illegal immigration, a subject very alien to the State.

2026 offers no relief; however, the Trump Administration promises intervention.

Eric Campbell Still MIA

The family of Eric Campbell continues to search for him, missing from a Del Norte County campground since, Sept. 16.

The family provided a picture of Eric’s Italian-made Pietta black powder revolver which has been unaccounted for and perhaps linked to his disappearance.

If you can provide any relevant information on Eric or his pistol, please contact the Grants Pass Police Department (541) 450-6260, case # 241002-1554-942 or the Del Norte Sheriff (707) 464-4191, case #202-40736. Please help bring Eric home.

The Platform addresses legislative and policy focus including Agriculture, Environment, Natural Resources, Economic Development, Health and Human Services, Government Finance, Housing and Land Use, State, Federal and Tribal Lands Management, and Transportation and Infrastructure.

The Platform addresses setting of speed limits along 199 where residents in Hiouchi and Gasquet often complain speed limits are not compatible with local residential use.
