City allows delay in senior housing project

Exploding whale memorial celebration happening soon

A plan to build a senior housing project across the street from Fred Meyer has been delayed another year, leaving the land vacant for now and allowing signs announcing the project to fade even more. A public celebration remembering the exploding whale in Florence will be held Nov. 12, 53 years after the whale was blown up. Contributed photos By BREE LAUGHLIN Country Media The Florence community has made a fun event out of a messy situation that occurred more than 50 years ago. It happened one fateful afternoon on the shores of Florence on Nov. 12, 1970. A giant decaying whale was becoming quite the curious spectacle on a Florence beach. It was decided that explosives would be used to get rid of the whale carcass. But not all went as planned. A newscaster covering the event reported, “The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds.” It’s that time of year again, when the community of Florence and cult exploding-whale lovers across the globe memorialize the famous whale occurrence. An “Exploding Whale Memorial Celebration” is happening Sunday, Nov. 12, from noon to 6 p.m. at Homegrown Public House and Brewery, 294 Laurel Street in historic Florence Old Town. The celebration is being described by organizers as free, family friendly, open house style, a little quirky, very artsy and a lot of fun. An exciting twist this year is Paul Linnman, the very one who made this report world-famous, will be joining for the cele-

bration. Those who attend the event can meet representatives from marine-based and nonprofit agencies from noon to 3 p.m. Florence’s official-unofficial whale mascots, Flo and Rence will also be present to visit and take photos with. At 3:45 p.m. there will be a public toast to the whale. Everyone who attends is encouraged to bring small offerings and mementos to the whale to be placed at the art installation on the east side of Homegrown. The exhibit will naturally evolve throughout the day into the evening when it glows with lights and the reflections of the colorful contributions. Wearing “whaley” fun costumes is encouraged too. The community is also being invited to view the Exploding Whale exhibit at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum across the street from Homegrown Public House at 278 Maple Street. It is open from noon to 4 p.m. The exhibit has actual whale bones from the honored whale and the museum is full of interesting Florence historical displays. A Whale Trail Map of Florence businesses is also available for the event. It offers activities and cool items for sale to commemorate the occasion. See WHALE page 6A

ODOT looking to repair Siuslaw River Bridge Siuslaw News staff Florence’s landmark bridge over the Siuslaw River will likely see some preservation work, but it won’t likely happen for a few years. According to the Oregon Department of Transportation website, a project to repair areas of the bridge is in the design phase, which is expected to cost $575,000. “The Siuslaw River Bridge is in fair condition but needs repairs to extend its useful life,” according to an ODOT project description released last month. “The bridge currently has a lot of patches and damage from tire tracks. According to the US Historical Marker Database, the bridges antiquated opening controls were replaced with a computerized system in 2011. “In the past, it opened mainly for cargo ships or The Siuslaw River Bridge will likely see some pres- barges carrying lumber ervation work in the coming years.
