Nighthawk Boys Hope Experience Leads to Success

By COLE BENZ Pioneer Sports Writer After a season in which they were bounced in the first round at the regional tournament, head coach Adam Hill has all the con-

fidence in the world his team can advance farther this season. “I think we should play three games in the regional tournament,” Hill said. “Our intention is to get through

that first round of the regional and play in the semifinal night, and see what happens after that; we think we can play with anyone in the region.”

routines go, there is not much difference now than years past, with the exception of a few things based on team personnel.

“Pretty standard,” Hill said. “I mean obviously we’re getting them into shape with conditioning and things like that, but it’s pretty typical.”

Early in the season Coach Hill can already feel a difference in his team from last year. He knew one challenge he wanted to work on was team chemistry, and so far his team has made the adjustments. “So far this year, our chemistry is really good,” Hill said.

“We got a lot of talent back, and the chemistry seems to be a lot better.”

Come opening night, Hill’s squad stands at 21 athletes, with two more hoping to join the team as nagging injuries will delay their season debut.

Of the athletes out this year, five are seniors, with the team graduating three from last year’s

As far as advantages the Nighthawks might have? Depth. Coach Hill’s team has experience, with only losing three seniors from the season before most of his players have experience at the varsity level.

“The one nice thing we’ll have this year is depth,” Hill said. “We could easily go ten deep; it’s kind of a nice problem to have as a coach.” A really deep team is going to allow Hill to keep fresh legs on the court.

Something the Nighthawks are going to have to overcome against their opponents is size.

“Trying to rebound might become an issue for us,” Hill said. “But on the other side we’re going to be so versatile

that we are going to give teams problems that way also,” “we’re going to be a very fast team,” said Hill.

As the Nighthawks look at this team and beyond, Hill is excited at the prospect of future successes based on the amount of young talent he has under his wing. Some underclassmen have already logged minutes with the varsity team, and he expects the same to happen this year, which bodes well for the long-term success of the squad. “Even though we’re young, we still have that experience factor,” Hill said.

“It’s a good thing, we’ve got talent that’s young with experience, we plan on being successful for the next few years.”

Scranton/Hettinger Girls Will Utilize Speed, Athleticism This Season

By COLE BENZ Pioneer Sports Writer With over 13 years of head coaching experience, Kelly Pierce enters this season hoping to utilize the speed and athleticism of his team to take them to the next level. Coming off a season

ending loss to Dickinson/ Trinity in the first round of the regional tournament, Pierce is ready to move on and hopes returning players can pick up where they left off.

“We returned two AllDistrict players,” said Pierce. “We have a lot of

key players back.”

His squad graduated five seniors, three of which were starters.

This year his leadership includes five senior athletes. There are 26 players total for the Nighthawks this year that will fill out the varsity, JV and

Early on in the preseason he is emphasizing conditioning, as it will be imperative for their style of play. “We always want to play fast, up tempo, both offensively and defensively,” said Pierce.

His practices include, according to Pierce, a lot of drills that are at a fast speed.

One challenge that the Nighthawks head coach will be focusing on overcoming this season are his team’s shooting performances. “Last year we had some good shooters,” “we didn’t shoot the ball from the perimeter as well as we thought we would,” said Pierce. He can already see some of the practice paying off early in the preseason.

“We’re shooting the ball really well,” said Pierce.

“Hopefully that can continue.”

They use speed, and athleticism to control the game against their opponents, something that their coach will utilize throughout the lengthy season. “We like to play a full court game, up and down with a fast pace tempo,” said Pierce.

“We’re pretty athletic, as a group we have team speed and have some good length.”

An opportunity that the head coach will try to improve as the season progresses will be, according to Pierce, their game down on the post. “We need to develop some of

our younger post players, so we can get some low post scoring, as well as defend the post” said Pierce. “We definitely have some players that are capable of taking on that task.”

Coach Pierce is hoping to control the tempo of the games and make sure their opponents are forced to play their type of game. “If we can speed them up and make them play the way we want to play, then we are going to be fine,” said Pierce. “I think dictating the tempo of the game, and playing fast; it’s going to be key for us.”

Reigning Regional Champ Nighthawks Enter Season With High Expectations

performed last season, and hopes his Nighthawk wrestlers can build off of their own success.

ist. “We were regional champs, that was one of our goals,” Burwick said.

“It was a very good year for us.”

After having only graduated two seniors Burwick knows that he can rely on experience to keep his team successes alive as they head into competition. “We did lose two very good seniors,” Burwick said. “But we have some great kids back.”

There are four seniors this season that head up the 26 total athletes out for the team this year.

The preseason regiment has been similar in most aspects, with the exception of how long it has been. The team has been working together for weeks now, and with weather interfering with their first match, they’ll have to wait a little longer before they can display the work they’ve put in.

“Our junior high team has been wrestling, but our high school kids want to get on the mat,” Burwick said.

The strength of his team, according to Burwick, is the experience and senior leadership. “We do bring back a ton of experience,” Burwick said. “I know our seniors are definitely going to be a strength for us

too, they’ve been through the grind; they know what it takes.”

One of the biggest hurdles Burwick is going to have to jump over is the overall health of his squad. With a few of his athletes recuperating from various injuries, it is going to give some of his younger wrestlers a chance to gain some ex-

perience. “It gives some of our younger kids an opportunity to step into that varsity role,” Burwick said.

Keeping his team motivated is a sticking point coach Burwick emphasizes throughout the entire season. It is something that has attributed to the success of his past teams, and hopes it will

motivate them now and into the future. “We need to outwork everybody that we are competing with,” Burwick said. “You have to find a way to keep them confident, you have to find a way to work through the grind, and we are going to compete at a high level, that’s our main objective.”

Young Cowboy Wrestling Team Has High Hopes for Season

By PAT RATLIFF Dunn County Herald Editor Killdeer Wrestling Coach Shane Olson and his team of Killdeer High School wrestlers are looking forward to a good season this year. Going into the season, they are enjoying a brandnew wrestling area at the school (called the multipurpose room), which gives the wrestlers their own space to practice.

The new venue welcomes 19 wrestlers this season.

“That’s about average,” Coach Olson said. “It’s up from last year though.”

Coach Olson said he graduated “a bunch” of players last year and is looking at younger wrestlers.

“We’ve only got one senior,” he said. “We’re mostly freshman and sophomores, it’s a pretty young team.”

That senior is Dave Dukart, who was ranked in the top four in the state at 195

pounds last year.

Also returning is TJ Moore, who placed sixth at state two years ago but missed the finals last year with a knee injury.

The young team defi-

nitely shows promise.

“We went to Sydney last week,” Olson said.

“We placed fourth in fouth in duals and sixth in individuals.”

Bulldogs Girls’ Basketball Hope to Lean On Experience

By COLE BENZ Pioneer Sports Writer Coming off a season in which the girls’ basketball team from Bowman County placed second in the district and third in the region, head coach Pam Fisher thinks her team has the experience to run with the best this year.

Coach Fisher has over 13 years of coaching experience that she brings to the court, along with a veteran coaching staff.

“It’s a solid program that has some stability to it.”

Right now the team has 22 athletes between grades 9-12. The team lost only two seniors from last year’s class while returning three for this season. With so few players graduating, many of the athletes have already got their feet wet, with many having logged minutes at the varsity level.

Preparation has been steady this preseason, and with varsity starting earlier than the other levels, the early focus will be on getting them ready to play. “The early emphasis will be getting the varsity ready to play,” said Fisher. “We have some time for the JV and the c-squad; we’re not under pressure to have three squads ready.” Getting the players acclimated with each other is another point, according to Fisher, that they will work on

this early.

Looking forward to the season, one big challenge will be Beach. “The biggest challenge in our region is Beach, they’ve won the region three or four years in a row,” said Fisher. “They’re a power house, and you don’t really go anywhere unless you find a way to get by them.”

An opportunity they

might have, according to Fisher, is going to be defense. “We need to focus on defense and rebounding,” said Fisher. “To be competitive we’re really going to have to step it up there.”

The biggest strength this team has going for it is experience, something that coach Fisher is counting on for her

team’s success. With losing only two players from last year’s squad, many of them have been through the program for a few years. “We have some depth and experience at all positions on the floor,” said Fisher. “We’re going to be able to generate some offense; we’re going to put some points on the board.”

“There is only one player returning from last year that had considerable time (with the varsity team), but they played JV together and they’re moving up,” Shahan said.

Coming off of a 9-13 season, and placing sixth in districts, the second year head coach says he’s keeping the routine

mostly similar to years past. The 17 athletes that came out this year are focusing on moving the ball around more. “We run a motion style offense, trying to take advantage of whatever mismatches we can create,” Shahan said.

“We don’t really have a ton of height so we can’t really pound it inside, so

Last year, his team struggled to overcome a few ruts, and coach Shahan is hoping that won’t be such an obstacle this year. One of the main things that he has focused on early in the season is team chemistry. “They understand the position

they’re in, and know they are going to have to play good team basketball,” Shahan said.

Shahan cites the lack of experience as a possible hurdle his team is going to have to overcome this season. “The kids are working real hard, and have been giving real good effort at practice,” Shahan said.

When a team graduates six seniors, expectations won’t be very high for a team with fresh faces on the court. Shahan however, sees this as an advantage. With so many new athletes getting a chance to showcase their talents, Shahan likes the excitement and optimism he’s seeing from them. “I think that’s probably our biggest advantage,” Shahan said. “Those guys are ready to step up, and they’re excited for the chance to step up and prove they can play basketball too.”

The Bulldogs start their season at the Dickinson Trinity Roughrider tournament on Dec. 10. They open against a tough New England team that is a top five pick in the region, something coach Shahan doesn’t mind. “They have a pretty talented team,” Shahan said. “So it will be a good challenge to open up with.”

“I’m pleased with the way things have started,” Shahan said. “They know people aren’t expecting much from them, and they are relishing in the opportunity to surprise some people.”

Bowman Co. Wrestling Begins Second Year Co-op With Beach

By COLE BENZ Pioneer Sports Writer The Bowman County wrestling team is set to begin its second season teaming up with Beach.

The team is fairly young as they only have one returning senior, and fourth year head coach Jeff Boynton is ramping up the tempo this pre-

season.

“They’re working harder, and practices are more intense,” Boynton said.

In the first season as a co-op the results were fairly successful.

Finishing in the Top 20 was a great accolade considering the squad was adjusting to the newly

formed squad.

“It went pretty good last year,” Boynton said.

“All the kids got a long and we wrestled well together.”

Despite the camaraderie, it was still an adjustment in some aspects.

“Dueling as a team, this was a new challenge last year,” Boynton said.

Heading into this season, one of the biggest challenges Boynton wants to overcome are the results in the meets and intensity during dual matches.

“Placing in tournaments and winning duals,” said Boynton, when talking about what he would like to see from his

And it appears that that statement could be repeated this year.

New England Girls Return Starters, Experience

By KEVIN SCHAEFER The Herald The New England girls return more seniors and starters than any other team in the county. Will that be enough to have a successful season? The lady Tigers Volleyball team brought home the third place trophy in Region 7 this year and most of that team has considerable playing time on the basketball court.

The Tigers are also blessed with having Jason Jung, a veteran coach, who also likes to win. The girls know his philosophy and have jelled together as teams in the past. Last season they finished district play with the number two seed. However, in the tournament they hit two cement walls and didn’t reach the regionals.

Seniors • 6’1’’ Ashley Plaggemeyer, • 5’9’’ Gabbi Hanson • 5’9’’ Hannah Nordby and • 5’6’’ Autumn Wolf are all returning to the Tiger lineup and bring with them some great basketball savy. Plaggemeyer is the ‘big man’ on the court and she will be expected to hit the boards and to control the basket. Hanson (14.6 pt./game) moves from shooting guard to point

guard, shoots well from the arc and also loves to drive the lane. She is also very competitive and loves to win. Assisting Plaggemeyer under the bucket will be (12.1 pts./ game) Nordby. Her teammates know that they can go to her for anything.

She shows her leadership with her work ethic. Wolf contributed greatly to the Tiger’s success in volleyball and if her basketball skills improve as much as

she sustained a broken ankle which ended her season. She is expected to also contribute greatly as she “gives it her all.”

Taylor who is not a tall girl, but she plays huge.

She is very talented and hard working as is evident by being placed on the All Region 7 team last month.

The Tigers, on paper, appear to be a team to contend with, but as they say, “Any given night.”

when they graduated last May. They also left with their athletism and speed.

But the team returns a small handful of players including 5’7’’ forward Abby Honeyman. The senior forward has already signed her letter of intent to compete for the Dickinson State women’s track and field team. Abby averaged 14.5 points and seven rebounds during the District 13 Tournament last season. She was named to the All-District 13 team.

“Obviously, we have our team goals and individual goals. The team goal is to win every game and never think you are out place

for any game. Any team can be beaten on any given night.

Last season MottRegent averaged 63.1 points per game and allowed 56.2. The Wildfire lost to Heart River during the District 13 championship but turned around to defeat the Cougars for third place in the Region 7 Tournament.
