THE DUTCH ADVENTURE

A MEMORABLE RETURN TO HOEVELAKEN

After a six-year hiatus, Beccles Town FC once again made its way to Hoevelaken in the Netherlands this past summer for the 11th *Internationaal Voetbaltoernooi*, rekindling a tradition that started 33 years ago. This trip was more than just football; it was a chance for our players and families to experience the best of Dutch hospitality, create new memories, and strengthen the bond between two football clubs that have shared a special connection since 1991.

Football teams from Beccles have been traveling

to Hoevelaken since that inaugural tournament when St Benet’s Wasps U12 team brought home the trophy and the U10s secured third place. As the years passed, this tournament has become a rite of passage for our young footballers, creating unforgettable moments for both players and their families.

A Journey Worth Every Mile

The journey to Hoevelaken began with an early 5am start and a seven-hour ferry crossing—long but filled with excitement and camaraderie. After arriving in

the Netherlands, the teams were welcomed with open arms by our Dutch hosts from SC Hoevelaken, known for their legendary hospitality.

This year, four teams from Beccles (U11, U13, and two U15 sides) took part in the tournament, competing against international teams in what would prove to be an intense and thrilling two days of football. As always, the Dutch hospitality did not disappoint, with families and players staying with host families, further enhancing the cultural exchange that is central to the spirit of the event.

More Than Just Football

While football was the central activity, the trip offered so much more. The real magic of this trip has always been the chance to experience a different culture and connect with new people. Families on both sides of the channel had the opportunity to bond and form lifelong friendships, united by a shared love of football. As always, the traditional post-tournament match between the parents and coaches, affectionately known as the “Teletubbies vs Joe Wicks XI,” was a highlight for all involved.

One of the moments that sticks out for many is the impromptu games played after the tournament. No need for language—football speaks for itself. Young players from Beccles and Hoevelaken formed mixed teams, playing late into the evening, laughing and enjoying the purest form of the game. This simple, spontaneous joy of football is a lasting memory for everyone who attends.

Memories and Hospitality

Beyond the competition, one of the great pleasures of the trip is the local cuisine— *Frikandel, Friet & Mayo*, a Dutch delicacy, became a favorite among our players and parents alike. After full days of matches, everyone gathered for food, music, and, naturally, more football, as players and coaches alike took part in friendly matches late into the night.

It’s impossible to overstate the warmth and generosity of our Dutch hosts. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed like family. The bonds between SC Hoevelaken and Beccles Town FC, first established in 1991, continue to grow stronger with every visit.

Many of the friendships made on these trips have lasted decades, and this year was no different.

A Resounding Success

After the tournament concluded and the players returned home, it was clear that the trip had been a resounding success. For many, it was the best experience of their young lives, and for the parents and coaches, it was a chance to share in a truly special tradition.

As one parent remarked, “The organisation was flawless, the hosts were incredibly generous, and the football was fantastic. But what makes this trip so special is how it brings people together. It’s an experience like no other.”

With a trip that scored off the charts—Frikandel, Friet & Mayo earning an impressive 20/10—it’s safe to say that the tradition will continue for years to come. After all, this trip is about more than football; it’s about community, friendship, and the shared love of the game.

We look forward to returning to Hoevelaken once again, knowing that this partnership, born out of football, will continue to thrive for generations to come.

Ladies Team Update

The Rise of Women’s Football

The new look ladies team took the start of the season by storm, going the first 9 league games unbeaten (winning 7 and drawing 2). Since then results have been indifferent but the football has been exciting and the games end to end giving spectators lots to get excited about.

Football is often described as a game of passion, teamwork, and community spirit—qualities that have been on full display with the growth of women’s football at Beccles Town FC. Over the past few years, women’s football has surged in popularity across the UK, and our club is proud to be a part of this exciting movement. As the 2024/25 season gets underway, the Beccles Town Ladies team is not only competing but also inspiring fans, young players, and the wider community to get involved in this rapidly evolving part of the game.

With the squad consisting mainly of players under 18, results were always expected to be indifferent during the season with the squad coming up against some more experienced sides who have known how to stifle a younger squad at this level. With Kelly Colli ns (Club Captain) being ruled out for 8 weeks with Plantar Fascia, the team lost an experienced head on the pitch and this has impacted the team but it has provided opportunities for others to step up and set an example. Lola Middlemass, who is usually a w inger, has been standing in at centre half and been putting in player of the match performances consistently.

There has been some standout results in the course of the season, including wins against the leagues current top 2 (Beccles 2-1 Stalham & Bure Valley 3-5 Beccles) and beating Mundford 4-0 at home just a week after a disappointing result in the away tie.

Building on Success

The ladies have a large squad with 28 players signed on, providing good competition for places and leaving the squad in a great position to push each other to work hard and develop further over the rest of this season and going forwards.

The ladies’ team, which impressed with its performances last season, is continuing to make waves. Despite facing some challenges, including injuries and a younger squad in comparison to more experienced opponents,

they have shown remarkable resilience. Last season, the team started strong, going unbeaten in their first nine games—an achievement that set the tone for the competitive edge they would bring to the field.

While results became more unpredictable toward the end of the season, the football remained fast-paced and thrilling, keeping spectators on the edge of their seats. Matches against top teams, including memorable wins against Stalham (2-1) and Bure Valley (5-3), showcased the potential this team holds. As the squad continues to gel, the goal for the upcoming season is clear: to build on that foundation and push for even greater success.

A Focus on Youth and Development What

The emphasis on developing the younger players and growing our ladies team has been at the forefront of what we've been trying to achieve this season. None more so than Stevie Potter, Stevie started the season joining the clubs U16's where she swiftly became U16's captain. Once she turned 16 at the start of 2024, we wanted to get her involved with the ladies team as soon as possible. She has made the step up effortlessly and has been putting in some really good performances, impressing not only the rest of the squad but also opposition players and coaches. As an assured central midfielder, Stevie breaks the game down well with quick feet and great line breaking passes.

makes the Beccles Town Ladies team stand out is the emphasis on youth development. With a squad made up of many players under 18, the club is investing in the future of women’s football by giving young talents the chance to step up and shine. Players like Stevie Potter, who joined the team after captaining the U16s, have made an immediate impact. Her composure in midfield and ability to break down the game with her quick feet and vision has been praised by both teammates and opponents.

Collins. Despite an eight-week absence due to injury last season, Kelly’s leadership has been a guiding force both on and off the pitch. Her words reflect the spirit of the team: “It’s fantastic to welcome younger players to the squad and watch their confidence grow. They’ve proven that, by working together, we can compete with even the most experienced sides.”

Another standout performer, Lola Middlemass, has risen to the occasion in a new position at centre half, demonstrating the kind of adaptability and determination that runs through the entire team. These young players are not only gaining experience but also setting an example for future generations of female footballers at Beccles Town FC.

Community Spirit

The whole team, coaching group and club would like to say a massive congratulations to tireless midfielder Vicky and her partner Gemma for the birth of their adorable little boy, Arthur. All 3 of them are doing well and we can't wait to see Vicky back on the pitch with Arthur watching on from the sidelines.

Women’s football isn’t just about what happens on the pitch; it’s about building a strong community. The Beccles Town Ladies team is lucky to have the backing of an enthusiastic and dedicated group of supporters. Whether it’s friends, family, or football fans, the support from the sidelines is a crucial part of the team’s success. As Kelly Collins put it, “We can’t thank our fans enough. Their presence at games lifts the team and shows

what a close-knit community we have at Beccles.”

It’s not just the fans who make a difference. Volunteers, coaches, and parents give up their time to ensure that everything runs smoothly, from training sessions to match days. Their dedication is a reminder that football is, at its core, a team effort—on and off the pitch.

Looking Ahead

As the 2024/25 season progresses, there’s a lot to look forward to. With a large squad of 28 players competing for places, the team is in a strong position to push each other to develop and improve. The future of women’s football at Beccles Town FC is bright, and the club is eager to see more people, especially young girls, get involved in the sport.

If you haven’t yet made it to a Beccles Town Ladies game, now is the time. These matches are fast, exciting, and packed with talent. With plenty of potential still to be unlocked, the team is poised to deliver even more thrilling football this season. Come down, cheer them on, and be part of the growing movement of women’s football in our community. Together, we can support these talented players as they continue to make their mark in the world of football.

Coaches, parents, and volunteers are the unsung heroes of grassroots football. They give their time and energy to ensure that every player gets a chance to shine, and their dedication is what makes this level of football so powerful. They foster an environment of inclusion and growth, helping young players not only to develop as athletes but also as people.

At its core, grassroots football isn’t just about developing future stars; it’s about creating a space where everyone, regardless of their ability, can enjoy the game. The joy of scoring a goal, making a great save, or simply sharing a moment of laughter with teammates—these are the experiences that make football so special. Grassroots football also plays a vital role in teaching young players valuable life lessons. Commitment, teamwork, discipline, and resilience are learned on the pitch, alongside technical skills.
